I thought his background was gonna be a blue screen😂 In accent “*_as you can see, since this scene is darker, I used blue screen ze whole time because it is better in dark situation_*”
I wish I saw this a few months ago. I shot a scene where the actors were supposed to be in a dark cave. I shot them against a green screen, resulting in the same problems you demonstrated in this video. Now I know, when placing actors in dark environments, I should use blue screen instead. Very useful information. Thank you.
Blue is also really good for day-shots. At work we use Blue- / greenscreen for hair-colour choice: - Blue for 'Blond hair'. Reason like as what he said, blue = less spill. Blond hair is really reflective, so it gets a lot of spill on smaller detailed hair. - Green is good for 'Darker hair'

completed my short film yesterday it's a horror short...and i use green screen for dark background...and now i am f'd up...but happy to know the reason why...thanks brother...god bless you
Thank you Andrey, for this information. The main reason why greenscreen is preferred over bluescreen is because the green channel has the least noise of all channels and luminosity is - like you already said - a lot higher resulting in brighter edges but only if the greenscreen has been lit brighter than the foreground. It should always be lit by plus/minus a quarter stop to the foreground. Most of the time during principal photography the production is not clear about the final background if it’s going to be a bright or dark lighting situation and the digital compositor will have to do a lot of edge fixing and treatment to restore the contamination in the transition area from foreground to background. Another reason why bluescreen is preferred over greenscreen is if the talent has blonde hair, because it has a lot of greens in it and therefore blue is the better color for matte extraction. Either way the more you know about the final background or the lighting of the scene the better for the artist oh and never forget to shoot a clean plate, but that’s almost always not happening...
I’m so happy this randomly popped up in my recommended! I don’t know much about film, though I’m friends with a lot of communication/creative arts majors so I’m at least a little more acquainted with film and production. This is really cool to see as a non-film student. I’ve always appreciated how much thought and work goes into the behind the scenes especially since my friends are so involved. Thanks for sharing your knowledge:)
Wow, this was something I wondered about for awhile. And it explains why effects were often darker than the background in older movies when they mainly used blue screen (likely because back than it was much harder to remove the color spill from green screen).

You really know what you are talking about! And I love your way of vulgarizing everything to make it really easy to understand. Always loved listening to competent persons talking about what they do! Bravo and thank you! :)
Partially true, there is more behind the choice, some technical reasons. Film has a higher sensibility towards blue and magentas and has a lower grain in that light spectrum, that is why while using film UV filters were used, and blue is a color that humans doesn't perceive the most, in the other hand is digital, CMOS/Bayer sensors have twice the amount of green pixels than blue or red, so, for digital, the natural choice was a green screen. The demosaicing algorithms of almost all cameras in the market use the abundance of green as the source of the luma (luminance) while converting from RGB to YUV, and even with a color subsampling of 4:2:2 the luma in the greens still present, while the blue and red are almost reduced a half of the original, hope this gives some extra information on the matter.
