Pulsar Audio Mu compressor... Is it thee best master buss compressor plugin ever made?
In this week's Plugin Of The Week, I'm going to go through what makes this variable mu compressor different, why it's part of my mastering chain now, and I'm going to even shoot it out against the UAD Manley Variable mu compressor (which has lived on my master buss for years now...)
So, might as well spend 11 minutes and 38 seconds with me to find out exactly what this Pulsar mu can do do!
As always, if you get something out of the show, SHARE IT!
Spread the love!

Until recently I didn’t even know about Pulsar Audio, but then I got the W495 for free on Plugin Boutique and I was blown away. Bought the Pulsar MU and yet again, they didn’t disappoint, this thing is incredible. Took my Drum Bus to a whole different level, a professional sounding level. After trying several compressors on it and not being fully satisfied with the results, it might be safe for me to say that I haven’t encountered anything quite like it. For those that keep asking in the comments how the MJUC compares, well, it doesn’t. Totally different beasts.
Hell yea! Their stuff is LEGIT!
Very professional video, great sounding mix and loved the vibes! Keep it up! Peace and Love
Cheers fam!!
Ive had this plugin for years and never used it. Now I will. Subbed!
This plugin LIVES on my master buss 🔥
Thanks for rocking with us ⚡
Of course! Love the 747, that EQ!
Both sound great, one feeling better
What did you listen through? Curious.
@@RadiumRecordsHollywood UAD sounds better to me too( KH 310 Neumann)
Well Presented Review!!!!! Please can you give review the Pulsar Modular P455 MDN Sidecar. Its so cool !!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice mixbus... Dense tough Good Particle and Gulfloss and Oxford inflator... If you don't know what you're doing you could hurt yourself with all of those!. As far as the compressor... That's one of the good ones... It's not better than wavesgrove's two Vari-mu's... In fact they have some cool extra tweakability hidden in there... It's not better than another Var-mu, Magic Death Eye by DDMF.... That one was ahead of its time.... And a simple very mirror might not do the job on some mastering applications... But yes it's one of the good ones! For sure... Obviously not limited to mastering
Thank you for the review of the plug in, small question regarding your chain, you use god particle, but would the master plan do the work aseell or it aoulb be processing too much?
Sorry if this is answered somewhere else. But do you mix with fx on the master? Im watching your video on making Drums pop and i notice plugs on the master while you do everything. i think this is a debated idea in the mixing community, wanted to know if you address it somewhere. great channel!
Hey! I always mix through plugins on my master buss... I think most modern records are done this way today. If sending to a dedicated mastering engineer, just back off the limiting at the end and leave a little headroom, you'll be golden and won't lose the vibe of your mix
Pulsar is warmer and punchier; it has more of an analog vibe to it. It's like controlling the EQ bands much better, and that adds more character to it, you know? (I listened with Genelec 8020s)
I hear that! The biggest difference I hear is in the lows/ low-mids
i am obsessed to it now
It's really good, I'm pretty happy with it replacing the UAD version on my master buss@@marjinal0617
Pulsar is creating more depth and 'life,' which separates the drums a little too much and adds a little 'artificial analog' high-end. While the Pulsar Mu opens up a track more, the Manly Mu sounds more controlled and rounder in the lower midrange. From that point, i would decide wich one suites better for the mix, but i wouldn't say the pulsar mu is a full replacement for the manly mu. It's harder to tell the bumps it's pushing because you ran it through the whole mastering chain, which will react differently because both plugins treat transients differently. In my personal opinion, you're using way too aggressive processing/toneshaping on the master. For example, your Gullfoss is reacting without sidechaining the lows, which separates the kick in a weird way. Also, I haven't seen anybody using an Avalon on the master for decades, especially not the one from Krazog. I would run from a Solid State Glue-Comp straight into the Clipper, then to God-Particle without a limiter. (Thats the chain where i mix into) From there on I use a Tube-Comp (Fairchild) in parallel and my two serial limiters as final touch. It's a colorful chain without breaking the original mix, keeping the transients intact. The master can also be pushed extremely loud without breaking (up to -5.5 LUFS if necessary)
very true
Not a fan of vari-mu on master bus.
Oh, I use Vari-mu on every song I work on... Love it so much
DDMF's Magicdeatheye does it for me 80 percent of every mix here. Adds more mojo, depth and punch that's needed every time. Shits on Pulsar mu mostly in comparison. 😊
I believe it's not for mastering, I sometimes use Pulsar MU on drum or vocal bus, but if you have to use such a hard plugin on master, you just crafted a bad mix.
The Manley vari mu is one of the most used compressors on master buss… Do some research!
