I like the shirt saying “this is not a drill”. Underneath it should say “so brace yourself”.
@@petridish3045 That is a good twist on a pun. Augurs well that it will have impact and not become boring.
@@Tensquaremetreworkshop That's going a 'bit' too far!
The mallet looks great! I especially like the brass. Thanks for sharing this.
That looks really fun to make! Katalox is one of my favorite woods to work with. So hard and dense, but accepts hand tools really well. Most of the time, I don't even use a finish. I sand to a really high grit and hit it with my buffing wheel and the natural oil in the wood creates a nice semi gloss sheen. It would be great if the seller had an Etsy shop or if Taylor Tools sold these as a kit.
He usually sells them at tool meets but if you contact him he will ship.
Oh very nice !!! Rex introduced me to the Studley chest and have been eyeing some of the tool kits out now for replicating various tools from the chest. I like it, very... well.... Studley
No dogs were seriously hurt in the making of this video.
You really should make a video of different ways to make wedges for the many various applications needed for em
I started work on my own with a friend.. useing a hammer with my chissle (Because it has a metal back and i checked wirh my teacher so yes it slightly damages the back but nothing too bad)
And using my drill with a spade bit.. were useing scraps that "fell off the back of a truck" from a skip .. (i think the builders gave my grandparents permission to take or dump what they want but anyway)
And of course this isn't the greatest wood but it seems to work.. ita been fun hanging out with my friend
Thanks for the video! I bought all three sizes of blanks from Jim Bode Tools and need to make them. Nice work!
Really gorgeous work James we always appreciate you sharing! Keep up the amazing work!
Very Cool Build!
This. Is. Gorgeous!
Beautiful, thanks for sharing that!
I love the Studley mallet and your version is really nice!
Stunning mallet, James! Crazy beautiful work! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Thanks James
WOW that is a really cool mallet. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Great video!!! Thanks!!!
Very nice project!
Here I was hoping it was going to be a product available on your site!
no but you can still get it from the same guy I did.
A mallet fit for a Teutonic God. Yes, I Thor-t you'd like that comment James. 🙂
Very nice. Not too nice to actually use, but nicer than a standard all wood mallet.
Nice shout to Eoin
Slán go fóill
Nice mallet.
Cool!
That wood is beautiful
If that is 3rd, I can't wait to see the winner! LOL. Very cool.
I love playing with my wood.
Kinda got a bang out of this. 😂
kept seeing those castings on jim bode, i wannas make one now
Cool, been a goal of mine for a while now to make this mallet
I wish you would have gone over the pros and cons of this mallet, or maybe another video could compare the pros and cons of the different mallets.
I have done a few videos on different types of mallets but I might have to do another. Here is one from 3 years ago. ua-cam.com/video/W2KkQTiIijs/v-deo.htmlsi=K-eoSKKMfp0dc-Hp
She's a beaut Clark 😁
Nice mallet
It has been discovered that not just humans are the only "Tool Making Animal". However, it appears "Man is the 'Pretty' Tool Making animal".
Use it as a prize for some viewer. Either a competition or a random gift.
Great video! That mallet makes me happy :). What weight version did you go with (I think he makes a 16oz and a 28oz)? Sorry if it missed it in the video.
This is the larger one.
Content up above.

Great job! Are the bronze castings commercially available?
Yes. The guy I bought them from will sell them to you but you have to contact him directly. There's a link to his Instagram down below.
CDB!
Cool beans
Questions, thoughts, ideas, snide remarks.....
Cool
Nice Mallet,
An honest question, are you certain that's a piece of Katalox? I've no experience with Katalox but I have a reasonable amount with Ekki/Azobe, and the face grain with the white streaks and red hue looked very like Ekki to me. I did some reading around and they've got very similar properties, a close look at the end grain and you'll be able to make sure what it is though :) Only reason I ask is I'd hate for you to be being sold fairly cheap Ekki as if it was rather expensive Katalox.
I just got a bunch of katalox. Any tips for working on it?
The tool has to be sharp otherwise it will skip on the top.
When are you going to make a Manly Mallet?
What was the final weight? Also do you remember how much just the bronze weighed?
I never weighed it but I think it was 2 lp originally so around 3 total.
CDB
I guess I’m pretty early on this one.
Is that handle ash? And what is the name of the head wood?
Handle is Ash, head wood is Katalox.
What is the relation between this remarkable tool and Studley the pianobuilder?
He had one in his chest. top center of the right pannel.
@@WoodByWrightHowTo ah right, I see it now. Tnx
Is there anything else left of his craftsmanship apart from this toolbox? I mean, he was not a toolbox maker.....
Not that I know of.
Looks like someone needs to sell these. 😁
There is a link in the description to the guy I got mine from.
!
Is that the 16 oz or 28 oz version?
That is the larger one

Looks like a new chisel?
Playing with a couple from Zen Wu.
That mallet might be studley, but they don't get any studlier than you!
Slick

Why wedge like a hammer head if you didn’t shape a stop on the handle? …pretty… I want one…
The force of swing it drives the head up. if if is not flared then the head will work off handle over time.

Yet another tool almost too pretty to use!
Really nice build, looks great! Looks somewhat larger than the Studley, difficult to tell, as you did not give dimensions. The original had beech infill and a rosewood handle... I would not have been able to resist fitting the side triangles and the brass button in the base.
Edit- discovered they are 2lb castings. The Studley weighed 17oz all up...
He sells two different heads. One is the original size and the the other is larger. I chose the larger. He said most people do.
@@WoodByWrightHowTo Wierd. If you are going to copy something iconic… I guess you could call it a scale model 🤤
Also, you've now got me wondering if Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos own a solid gold version of the Studley Mallet? 🤔
" 'ev'y met'el', as a Brit Rock & Roller would put it.
@@johnbesharian9965 "I want to have your gold hammer.
Why don't you call my name.
Oh let me have your gold hammer.
This will be my testimony."
As Peter Gabriel might have put it. ;-)
I'll be honest. I bought a two pound mallet with the rubber heads and never looked back.
But
I understand why people want to build their own
In this day and age, you actually BOUGHT ash lumber?!
It's free all over the Midwest.
You do have a froe, draw knife and plane, don't you?
its pronounced owin if you mean eion reardon😂
you would think I would remember that. LOL ua-cam.com/video/Kbn4vU7XT_Y/v-deo.html
This is the least amount of work I have seen you do on a handle. A couple of strokes on opposite sides with a spoke shaver. Whyfor you only do that?
That is all I normally do on a mallet handle. I like the octagonal feel.
