    Sorry to hear that you are having to close. Just before lockdown I was looking into opening a climbing gym. I think you are so right about the building you set up in is so important.
    Height, floor area, and parking spaces are key features to look for.

    Sorry to hear about the closure. I think lots of small businesses are going to be struggling right now, and their landlord's might want to consider that fact a little more and have some level of cash-flow coming in, rather than none. I think a lot of these businesses that are having to close due to overhead from their leases/properties are going to leave a property that will stay vacant for a long time. Anyhow, really sorry to hear about the closure, I hope you are able to find a home for your walls, and hopefully there are opportunities for a better, more suitable location for your dedications. Best of luck with everything, and if you ever need virtual, long distance, help with anything, you know where to find me. I am excited to see what other projects and adventures you get up to outside of the gym.

    Apparently the trend is different here. There are so many Boulder only gyms appearing here (Germany). Actually the trend is here is that people start with boulder. Something I couldn't imagine 5 years ago.
    The key was apparently a lot of easy&safe but interesting boulders. (Something that I consider harder to bolt than the hard stuff)

    • @climberdad
      @climberdad  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks for insight. I've heard bouldering gyms are big In Germany. In the US in general if you walk into a well established climbing gym the bouldering area will be packed and the ropes empty unless the gym sets trash for boulders. But, ropes get people in the doors.

      Over the last few years gyms have exploded here. So many gyms with more than 1000m2 apeared here over the last years and each was full before corona (now the number of climbers is limited). And thats partialy due to the boulder trend. One of the leadings gyms that initiated the trend to boulder only was "cafe kraft". cafekraft.de. The effect you describe that the ropes are not used I have only obseved in a gym that a lack of "bolting creativity" for sport but a good boulder community. Now they have transformed most of the sport area to boulder with great sucess. Most beginners I know whent to a gym to boulder to just have some fun. Boulder is apealing as there is no complicated hardware and is considered safer by them (in contrast to your experience). My impression is that, nor the style or the size of the gym is key for sucess, but mainly good bolting (specially in the lower grades).

    its indeed so great info , but i am unhappy to see you leave this space, You will find a better one soon. Just one question what height is sufficient enough to add ropes to some of your gym walls.

    • @climberdad
      @climberdad  4 роки тому

      Thanks. Thats a great question. I would say the minimum is 20'. The maximum boulder height, IMHO, without doing something abnormal like giant pads or netting is 16'. This roped wall lives in that grey area at 17' and I wrestled with it for a while because its really not enough to rope up.

    Man, I want to have a bouldering wall like that at home! How tall is it? To hear you had to close makes me wonder how my Michigan gym hasn’t closed for good despite STILL being closed in August

      They probably had some money saved up before the shutdown. We we're still in the new phase and running on credit.
      This wall stood at 15'. Measurement of the panel are in the video :)

    When you say "tear down the walls" do you mean "destroy" or just debuild, maybe store and use later again? Sad to hear it didn't work out. But it looks like you learned a lot from it and next time it will last much longer. Stay strong!

    • @climberdad
      @climberdad  4 роки тому

    @Climber Dad, I have a question about parking. We are looking into a building that is industrial where there are designated spots however during regular off hours (weekends and after 5pm) the parking lot opens up to our use with 75+ spots. Having worked at multiple gyms there has always been a peak capacity after 5pm (usually 7pm). Knowing this would you still be inclined to approach this style of building or would you find something that has tons of available parking?

    • @climberdad
      @climberdad  Рік тому

      How much designated parking is yours throughout the day and will other businesses complain if you use their parking in the evening and weekends?

    • @photoadventures
      @photoadventures Рік тому

      @@climberdad Only looks like 4-7 spaces throughout the day. Because it is strata owned we are attempting to obtain strata approval for parking use during off hours.

    • @climberdad
      @climberdad  Рік тому +1

      That would be a big red flag to me until approval is obtained.

    My buddy and I are looking to open a club in Northern Cali. I know about getting punked. In the last go, my store was shut for 3 MONTHS, Jack. No revenue for three goddamn months. My sales taxes in that quarter was 50 bucks!
    We made it through. My store still stands!
    For the new climbing gym project, the problem now is that there is nothing suitable to buy (El Dorado County, the home of the Sierras, by the way.) and a nice buildout will cost me around 5 million for land, new construction of 35 thousand feet and the TI work. Looking towards a section 7a with SBA.
    Trying to get financing now. We have excellent credit and tons of business success behind us but are hard pressed to finance needing 500k down.
    Any advice?
