Thank you for sharing! I'm currently looking at aviary ideas to house my quails and it's refreshing to see someone who truly cares for their birds and isn't trying to cram a bunch of them in one space for profit.
I don't sell them, so profit never entered the equation.

Thanks for sharing. I just drew up the plans for my aviary, the biggest cost would be the clear roof panel. It’s a great idea to use shade cloths for roof.

I loved this video! I'm mentally building my next aviary and this was very helpful! What is your opinion on height? I have this image of a very tall aviary that my birds can soar up and down. With a perches at the highest point.
The taller the better in my opinion. I would have built mine higher but had to be careful of building regulations. If I lived in the country I wold have built a larger and taller aviary. Having said that I may extend the height of mane in places to accommodate the palms growing inside.

Do the birds chew on the plants? And how do you prevent it? I would love to have a planted aviary for my birds, however I'm scared the plants just would not survive! I have green cheeked conures and I am planning to get some budgies and an eclectus parrot in the future. Also wondering if quails kill all the grass? I'd like to add quails to the aviary to pick off the bugs but would they just turn the aviary to dirt? Or would grass survive? Thanks for this video! Very interesting and educational! I know you answered some of these questions briefly in the video however I was just looking for extra clarification 😊
Ella Renèe some plants can be toxic, or the dirt in the plants vase get white mold and that’s really toxic for birds

Also, any tips on acclimating hand fed cockatiels to outdoor life. So far my cockatiels (except for 2 who were not hand fed) still come in at night. They wait at the door to come in for the night, my little loves. My aviary is 10x10 and 10 feet tall. But, I have 26 budgies along with 6 cockatiels. That's why I'll be expanding the aviary. The budgie population are all rescues from different feed stores. I call them my BOC's. (Bottom of the cage) so, they are brought home evaluated, quarantined and then when ready, into the aviary. The budgies always acclimate well.......but the cockatiels, not so much! I won't be getting anymore cockatiels, but I'll be rescuing more budgies. So far, they have all healed and doing really excellent.
We started with 2 aviary cockatiels and then added 2 hand raised, and then a third hand raised. We only add birds in summer. At first we would put the hand raised cage inside the aviary so they could chat to the others, then bring them in at night. Eventually we let Joey and Charlie out of their cage but left the cage in their for them to go back and sleep in... they never wanted to go back. Once they had a taste of the larger cage they were hooked.
I used to carry Poopie out each day on my hand and let him play during the day. He was very clumsy and not good at flying so I would bring him in each day until he was able to tell me "Dad, I got this." Then he stayed out and all have been fine. They have stayed friendly and helped make the other birds friendly.

Fantastic aviary, my macaw is only a year old and I'm saving for a good quality aviary , not so much for the macaw as he's free flight trained so is out a lit, I've taken a couple of lovebirds, there happy our in the bird rooms we don't have great weather here so I wouldn't leave them out full time so am putting together something more for them, I'm going to try get away with netting my area for the rest of this summer but the macaw will have access to it so they'll never be left out alone I'm it, more a flight that an aviary, did you do a video on the stainless Steel aviary,..I'm off to have a look see, love from Ireland

Would you recommend timber for lovebirds? They are small, but considering they have big beaks for their size, I'm unsure how destructive or not they would be. And they love to chew on just about anything
I'd say metal. Like you said, they love to chew on things
I'm planning on building one in a couple years but I don't know that birds to get, because in gets -15 Farenheigh in the coldest winter. I'm thinking gamble quail, small pheasant and some native finches, I'm using it for rehabilitive purposes. Maybe Quakers?
That's about 45°F colder than it ever gets here so I wouldn't have a clue.

Very Good Natural Aviary. But I have a doubt. Do you have Rats over there? Or mite problem over there?
I'd like to add some grasses or a small tree type into my flight for my finches and diamond doves. For the tree I'm planning on a weeping fig, but do you have any recommendations for grasses? I'm in Florida. Would need to be something that can grow in a rather flat pot type container for the quails to hide and nest in. (my asian blue quail are proven self breeders and great parents)

Been thinking of building a aviary. How often do you have to clean the floor of poop & how, or do you not have to in a large aviary?

I have a greenhouse and want to put some little quail and finches in it. BUT I need a curtain barrier. I've seen plastic chain used but can you recommend something better? I cannot install a another door or wall.
I would put a kick stand at the bottom to prevent the Quail from running out. As for the curtain, the 2 most popular methods seem to be the plastic chain you speak of or thick clear plastic strips. The strips overlap each other forming a more solid wall than the chain, but are harder to push through. Also Be careful of the heat in the glasshouse.

I am building another aviary tomorrow off of the original one we have budgies and quail and we live in Masterton near Wellington what is a new type of bird that is not to big and will be suitable for us

Could a Quaker, Amazon, or African Grey be ok with timber construction?
i wouldn't risk it since they are chewers, if you are doing it id say take the birds in at night :)
What size would you suggest could fit 50ish budgies (and a few quails) in comfortably? Someone I know has around that amount of budgies but the aviary seems a bit small, me and her can barely fit in there together.
That is too small. I wouldn't have that many in my aviary and mine is 360 square feet. Birds need to be able to get away from each other if they feel the need to.

hi! i know this is literally 5 years after you posted this but i was wondering how you had such a close relationship with your birds? i'm thinking of building an aviary and lots of the sources i've looked at have said that the birds in their aviary don't get very tame.

It is a bit of a waste of time. This aviary is in NZ so the types of material may be different and the prices will certainly be different. Having said that it was around $1500 Aussie bucks. I built it myself so no labour is included in that price. Thanks for watching.
My dad has an African grey that we were talking about building an a very for so he can stretch his wings better then in the trailer he currently lives in... Can you use wood for an African Grey Avery or would it be better to use metal? He's about 5 years old and I wouldn't consider him very big but I don't know much about pet birds or how much an African Grey might chew on the wood.
Large parrots can destroy wood very quickly. And timber for outdoors needs to be treated to not rot and that could poison your bird. That is why metal is best.

How do you keep rats out?
We don't have many rats where we live, but occasionally I put bait out around the perimeter of our property. I did extend the walls down with metal roofing in an attempt to keep rats from tunneling in, but it has never been an issue. In a smaller aviary I built next to the main one, I put mesh in the ground about a foot down so rats could not tunnel in at all.
In my house is too much rats. Whats the solution for my aviary.
Use smaller holes 12mm x 12mm or smaller aviary mesh

Also you probably could get 100budgies in you aviary because it's not about the size it how much ft/m of perch you have alltogether
I disagree. That is breeding mentality and I am not doing it for breeding. Also if I had 100 budgies in there the poo would be a bit much, and the noise would be constant and I don't want that. I am trying to keep a balance where the cleaning is mostly handled by nature and the plants are not destroyed by the birds. The Pheasantasiam is about a peaceful place with plants, and birds in the most natural environment I can give with the least amount of work and human interference.
Please understand... birds like finches and canaries will still chew and consume leaves and plants that they have access to.
Please dont slam the door like that, it’s hurting ur plant. Or move the palm tree from there. 🌴😕
Watching this for ideas on a chicken run. Such an eyesore how most people keep their chickens not to mention unhealthy for the birds.
Our chickens roam freely around the property.

If you paint the mesh black, you can see inside the cage a lot easier
As I think I mentioned. I haven't done it though because I have mostly parrots in there and they will chew off the paint.
