- Large Aviary. Walk in Aviary Overview, Construction, Plantings, Birds @ Pheasantasiam.
The Pheasantasiam is around 33m² (355ft²) and was originally being built as a Pheasant aviary but now currently holds 25 birds from 6 different species. These birds are Lady Amherst Pheasants, Cockatiels, Quail, Ringneck (Barbary) Doves, Turquoisine (Grass Parakeets), Java Sparrows (Java Finch). The Chickens you see in my videos are free range and do not have access to the aviary although they always want to get in.
In this video the aviary (Pheasantasiam) is around 17 months old. In that time we have had 6 Java Sparrows born in the aviary as well as 2 Turquoisine parrots. These numbers would be a lot more if it wasn't for us removing nesting boxes. The Javas are always looking for places to make nests. The construction materials of the aviary are explained in the video.
Please do not use the UA-cam supplied "Automatic Captions" unless you are doing so for a laugh, they are so inaccurate. If the need arises or I get the time I will type up some correct captions.
The aviary is fully planted with a natural earth base. It is easy to keep clean as the size is big enough for nature to take care of the droppings and seed is not wasted as it usually sprouts giving the birds a fresh source of greenery to eat.
This style of aviary is made a lot easier due to the very small amount of predators and rodents in the aviary location.
I am a collector of Palms also so the aviary has plenty of those. (Check out my channel if you wish to see more palm videos)
I have lots of videos of the birds in the Pheasantasiam on my channel so please take a look if you want to see a specific type of bird more closely.
Please also subscribe above and like the video (if you like it) and feel free to ask questions on How to build an aviary or comment below.

must be lovely sitting there with a glass of wine on a sunny day watching them all , i have 2 cockatiels and 2 love birds and i know how satisfying it is watching them do there own little things
Beautiful aviary! I wish I lived in a climate where I could build an aviary like this for my cockatiels.
why dont you build one for temporary usage
use it in warmer summer months and bring the tiels inside during winter
just saying...
I live in Utah. The hogle zoo has an indoor area with free flight birds. But... I suppose they are an AZA facility and they have millions that they can spend on that kind of thing.
Liz T beautiful aviary? Are you not wearing your glasses or are you simply blind? What a hellhole! If I were a bird I would hate living there.
I live in Ireland and I have a couple of heat lamps in the outdoor parts of my avairy which are only open to them on warm days, they choose to sit near the heat lamps on cold day's.i don't leave them go in it all the time as I don't want nest s built out there...even on a cold day I'll let them out only if I can stay with them for exercise, they love it ...do all you can for ur bird it's the least we can do..
@@Gabriel21733 you'd rather live in a small cage? Alright I guess

I love how you made it look natural. Having grass in the cage is good for the birds they eat it. Very cool ⭐
Surreal and sq ft, also height?
Very nice
your aviary is probably the best in the world its amazing and all the birds look so amazing as well
Mr. Hypnotic I don't know about best in the world, but Thanks. I try to make it as nice for the birds as possible.

Ramu C Cheers. I 'm in the process of building another one at the moment. Thanks for watching.
very -very nice my friend good job n welldone ...tq
+Dak Keli Thanks, and thanks for watching.
Nice spot to chill
i love it ,would be so cool with a little fountain in there
Very nice aviary, do you worry about predators biting the legs from the birds when they are sitting on the wire? I have seen aviaries with double fencing for this reason.
I have heard stories where the birds feet were biting off.
W♥️W!!! Your aviary has everything. Do you throw grit in the dirt for them to get naturally? Where do the quail sleep since they aren't using their house on the ground? The thoughtfulness & way you notice what they like (such as the bird always looking for a higher roost) is extraordinary. I'm about to convert a giant parrot cage to an indoor aviary like this. I'll need a grow light. This makes birds so happy & that happiness is contagious to watch!
This is the way birds should be kept, not in those puny little cages that pet stores sell. How do we make this the norm for all pet birds? That would be my wish!
Esther Kelly It is my wish too! Thanks for watching and spread the word about decent environment cages for birds.
I love it. I'm wanting to build an aviary for my little parrotlet to play in during the summer. Thank you for the great ideas =)
Glad I could be of help. Thanks for watching.

Hi, best video... Cool work.
Beautiful aviary.
nice i like this🙋
Fantastic boss
Thank you so much for this video. Needed some good ideas and certainly got them from you. Thank you. :)
It looks quite clean, I see you are north enough to have kikikuyu and I think it grow copes well with the birds, it's regeneration means you have a plant can break down waste quickly, so it cannot become a breeding ground for disease.
That is an idea I have been meaning to implement for some time now, but I keep putting it off due mostly to difficulty of keeping it clean. Thanks for watching.
Superrrrrr
Wow the birds are so lucky 🍀 lol
They are spoilt I wish I was a bird!
Good job... & so nice
so nice setup
Very kool
You guys should try out ornamental quail like California quail or Gambles quail BEAUTIFUL birds!
OMG.. I loved this.. It's wonderful
Thanks! Glad you liked it.
How nice!❤
well done, thanks for sharing
Very nice! I am hoping to build one soon.
Looks wonderful. I have princess parrots - at present 6 but more in the nest. Really like your aviary.
Gael Fletcher Princess Parrots are beautiful creatures and I have thought about getting a pair before. I am currently building an aviary at the moment for a Galah. Thanks for watching.
you have some really cool birds.
Thanks!
They sure are, they are just as tame as the cockatiels we have now, Thanks for watching.
That is awesome!!! Great job!
bravo, in the aviary where I worked for two years, I built faux rocks, waterfalls and ponds, I just finished my 3rd faux-rock, so come see me;-
Hello my friend... i have come to your channel. Please come to my channel
They would love a Bird bath with water, birds love to be around water🤩
They have bowls of water for bathing.
I have now uploaded the release of the Red Rumps and one of them getting a seeing to by a Dove. The videos can be found by clicking on "Caryotagigas" under the heading for this video. Thanks for watching everybody.
Lucky birds!
I love it baby
Looks great! I've been wanting to build an aviary like this, where you let nature takes care of the bird droppings. I was wondering how you attached the walls to the ground? I am concerned with rodent invasion so I thought of applying wired mesh underground.
R.I.P. Brucie. Nov 2011 - Nov 2013. The Pheasantasiam will never be as Beautiful again.
Brilliant Vid mate well impressed with your set up, and mixture of birds i live in the UK east coast, and get lots of problems with mice and rats, so have to have concrete base and traps, and 1.7 pellet gun, all the best to you from the UK and keep it going
I'm making an aviary just from being inspired by this! Good work mate
Paul Everest Glad I could be of help. Good Luck and Thanks for watching.
Very pretty
Awesome❤I'm inspired. Just subscribed 🙏
Short answer, No. I live in New Zealand and there is very little in the way of predators here. Also the birds don't sleep on the wire mesh so they are safe at night. Thanks for watching.
beautiful
beautiful aviary - thank you
Your aviary sooo natural loved it

Beautiful aviary, what are the dimensions? Do you have snakes in your area.
Loveofpets n
Sorry, I don't know how I missed this question. The aviary is approx 8m x
4m with a height ranging from around 2 to 2.5m. There are no snakes in
New Zealand. Sorry again for the (super) late reply.
loved it !
Beautiful
Thank you! Cheers!
wonderful. hope to make one for my birds :D
Awesome. If i have a large garden i'll make almost this type of aviary.
Ammad Naeem
Thanks for watching, Glad you liked it.
ooh lovely birds I want to make an aviary same like this.
Not exactly sure what States you at?
wow wow wow
AWESOME!!! Does it ever get too cold for them? Or do you ever need to bring them all inside? I guess you can only do this if you live in a certain climate. Or can use only for summer. I wouldn't want a bird unless I could give them a huge enclosure like this.
Bridgette Ignatova They always stay outside. It doesn't get very cold here, it never snows or anything like that. The lowest daytime high we have ever had is 9°C and the lowest temp ever around 0°C, but the cold temps only last for an hour or 2. Thanks for watching.
wonderful
What about rats and mice do you have a problem with them , I had to put sheet metal around my aviary to stop the mice from getting in , the little buggars can squeeze through the 10 mm square mesh and my dog killed a couple of rats in our yard don’t know where they came from but they have gone now , love your aviary a magnificent structure you could sit in there with a cup of coffee and just relax , all the best from Tasmania Australia 🇦🇺
Wow that's so cool! But do you ever have to worry if they'll dig underneath the fence?
ZombieGamerDan None of the birds dig that much, plus the sides go down underground around 2 feet(ish) 500-600mm ish. Thanks for watching.
this so amazing...(im getting jealous) lol
my dream aviary i loved it
Thanks, and thanks for watching. I also have hundreds more aviary videos.
nice
impressive!
Stephanie Diaz Thanks!
amazing I want to one like this
Do you cover the cage with nylon aspects in the winter or what
Hi, The size of the openings on our mesh are 19mm and the wire is 16gauge (I think), which is about 1.25mm or 0.050inch.
I don't have any parrots as large as an Amazon, but I would definitely go for a larger gauge of at least 14, but preferably around 12 (2mm).
Cheers.
😍👍❤🔥
I thought your accent sounded like a kiwi accent! Kiwis all the way!
+Ruben Braddock ;)
If you are going to have birds, I think this is the best way to do it if you can afford it. I think birds should be allowed to fly and be given room to do so.
Man location Newzeland????. Weldone bkoz u made entire defrent way of birds & cage. Nice realy
Yes, Auckland, New Zealand.
I was hoping it would talk more about construction. How are the studs connected to the roof and what is the bottom of the walls relationship to the ground.
I think the automatic caption robot drinks too much. Thanks for watching.
Just got a pair of Red Rumped Parrots that will be released soon after being Quarantined. Video coming soon...
Thanks very much for your replies. If I may some more: I will be building something similar to yours and leaning towards a dirt floor for the same reason you mention, it is much more natural. I have however been advised to use a concrete slab and put a bit of dirt on their to avoid diseases and worms. I live in Brisbane where it is not as wet as NZ, speaking from experience :-0)
Love to hear your thoughts.
Thanks again.
Bert
Not sure on that one... Australia has a lot more "nasty" things than NZ than could burrow into the cage, and a lot more parasites than NZ. Another method is to put down mesh under some dirt so you stop burrowing predators while keeping the natural soil systems functioning. Wish I could be more help, and good luck.
Hi Bert,
I'm thinking of doing one like this too! I also live in Brisbane. Have you had any such luck?
Catherine.
nice,,,
you have a very beautiful aviary. Have you thought of adding a pool or fountain for them?
TheForsakenSailor Yes I have, and hopefully one day I will get the time to do it. I have thought of many cool ways to do it, but I do have concerns about how I will keep it clean. Thanks for watching.
@@CockatielCompanion thats a BIG time job if you hav a pond. The water gets stagnated. No doubt it would b a BEAUTIFUL idea. A bathing area for all these loveables of yrs amongst all d greneery.... otherwise its very WONDERFUL the way it is now.
LMFAO "Hot salsa... lets order now!!!" those Automatic captions are a laugh hahaha
what kind of bird that i should put to help me clean the worms that possibly will live in there? ty before
Quail would be quite good.
