  • Large Aviary. Walk in Aviary Overview, Construction, Plantings, Birds @ Pheasantasiam.
    The Pheasantasiam is around 33m² (355ft²) and was originally being built as a Pheasant aviary but now currently holds 25 birds from 6 different species. These birds are Lady Amherst Pheasants, Cockatiels, Quail, Ringneck (Barbary) Doves, Turquoisine (Grass Parakeets), Java Sparrows (Java Finch). The Chickens you see in my videos are free range and do not have access to the aviary although they always want to get in.
    In this video the aviary (Pheasantasiam) is around 17 months old. In that time we have had 6 Java Sparrows born in the aviary as well as 2 Turquoisine parrots. These numbers would be a lot more if it wasn't for us removing nesting boxes. The Javas are always looking for places to make nests. The construction materials of the aviary are explained in the video.
    Please do not use the UA-cam supplied "Automatic Captions" unless you are doing so for a laugh, they are so inaccurate. If the need arises or I get the time I will type up some correct captions.
    The aviary is fully planted with a natural earth base. It is easy to keep clean as the size is big enough for nature to take care of the droppings and seed is not wasted as it usually sprouts giving the birds a fresh source of greenery to eat.
    This style of aviary is made a lot easier due to the very small amount of predators and rodents in the aviary location.
    I am a collector of Palms also so the aviary has plenty of those. (Check out my channel if you wish to see more palm videos)
    I have lots of videos of the birds in the Pheasantasiam on my channel so please take a look if you want to see a specific type of bird more closely.
    Please also subscribe above and like the video (if you like it) and feel free to ask questions on How to build an aviary or comment below.

    Very nice aviary, do you worry about predators biting the legs from the birds when they are sitting on the wire? I have seen aviaries with double fencing for this reason.
    I have heard stories where the birds feet were biting off.

  • @kit2130
    @kit2130 6 років тому +1

    W♥️W!!! Your aviary has everything. Do you throw grit in the dirt for them to get naturally? Where do the quail sleep since they aren't using their house on the ground? The thoughtfulness & way you notice what they like (such as the bird always looking for a higher roost) is extraordinary. I'm about to convert a giant parrot cage to an indoor aviary like this. I'll need a grow light. This makes birds so happy & that happiness is contagious to watch!

    It looks quite clean, I see you are north enough to have kikikuyu and I think it grow copes well with the birds, it's regeneration means you have a plant can break down waste quickly, so it cannot become a breeding ground for disease.

    Thanks very much for your replies. If I may some more: I will be building something similar to yours and leaning towards a dirt floor for the same reason you mention, it is much more natural. I have however been advised to use a concrete slab and put a bit of dirt on their to avoid diseases and worms. I live in Brisbane where it is not as wet as NZ, speaking from experience :-0)
    Love to hear your thoughts.
    Thanks again.

    • @CockatielCompanion
      @CockatielCompanion  11 років тому

      Not sure on that one... Australia has a lot more "nasty" things than NZ than could burrow into the cage, and a lot more parasites than NZ. Another method is to put down mesh under some dirt so you stop burrowing predators while keeping the natural soil systems functioning. Wish I could be more help, and good luck.
