I put together something similar last year. I used an HP Elite Desk SFF with an i7-8700, added a 1TB NVME and brought over the 1TB SATA SSD I was using with my old system. Cooling was an issue emulating PS3, so I picked up an HP workstation cooler that happened to be compatible and added a pair of Noctua 40mm fans in the back for exhaust. Lastly, I grabbed a used RTX A2000 - the fan was pretty loud, but a trip to Ali Express, $20, and 2 weeks took care of that. Total cost was about $550 which is probably more than I should have spent on this setup, but it's working great with Windows 10 and booting in to Big Box (thanks for your tutorials!). With the cooling from the beefier cooler and the exhaust fans, PS3 runs perfect, and I've been able to get a lot of PC gaming out of the way with it too. Your channel was a great inspiration for the build, and I'm looking forward to several years of service out of it.

Boo resolution scale. When working with a $260 PC like this it's totally worth your time to do some GPU bios modding. I have a RX 580 Strix that I got new years ago for $160 and there are programs that allow you to test tighter mem timings (aka strap tweaking). Combine that with a bit higher tdp, a couple MHz core and mem freq bump and custom fan curve. Once dialed in the flashing process is relatively straightforward but I recommend making a bootable blind rescue flash drive just to be safe (esp if card only has single bios). For the cpu and system RAM Ryzen Master is your best friend with these HP Pavilion TG01-2xxx systems using the Erica 8906 mainboard. CPU OC is easy, but RAM OC is a hot mess. Took 4 hours to dial in dual rank ( 2x16gb 4400c17 G.Skill Ripjawz V) at only 3200c16-20-20-28-1T. Terrible timings and clock speeds for ANYTHING other than these HP's. Running 5300G at 4.6 GHz
Couple things. First off, RAM has to be matching pairs to run in dual channel. Second, if you can find a R7 3700X at a good price, that might be a decent upgrade that puts it in line with the Xbox Series S. Two extra cores, and it boosts hire. Now that it's so easy, and with the console market being the way it is, I think these consolized PCs are going to get a lot more attention in the next few years.
2 extra cores and way more threads too man, good suggestions, I'm not a fan of the RX 570/80/90s these days as they don't have driver support, id aim for a 5600XT
You can't get dual channel RAM with mismatched RAM sticks. They need to be the same capacity and ideally the same speed so you're just running two sticks for a total capacity of 20GB. Ryzen really benefits from dual channel. I'm also curious if that power supply can handle a 590 since they can be power hungry.
I really would like to see a Windows version, and to compare what are the FPS/Performance differences from one to the other, considering that windows version would allow you to play games that uses anticheat software
I gotta steam machine in my living room with e5 2630v4 32gbs of ram and a rx 6600m all built with ali express parts and it works well since proton swaps dx12 for vulkan
With mismatched capacities, you're only getting dual channel performance up to 8gb of ram, the rest of the 12 is going to be single channel. If you want to avoid this, ensure using equal capacities for the ram
Look up flex mode, most modern cpus support it, and when combining a 8gb and 4gb stick, will run the first 4 of the 8gb stick, and the 4gb stick in dual channel, once you use more then 8gb, the second half of the 8gb stick will be used im single channel mode. Still, any pre ddr5 ram is dirt cheap, so not going with another 8 is definitely a wtf
The power supply in these HP towers doesnt meet the spec for a 590..which is a power hungry card some of them go as low as 180W so be careful. If it were me Id go for a 1650 or rx 6500 at the most..or something a bit newer for better efficiency. I bet if you ran a burn in test on cpu and gpu combined on this setup it would crash or perform badly
@@Tony.Cez.Gaming Ive done a similar unit recently HP 285 G3 and put an Nvidia 1650 super in there which has a 100w tdp. Great video, unfortunately just by releasing the video the prices of these machines on ebay went up dramatically I think cuz I couldn't find a single one at that price
Important to note that you may run into issues if you get one of those Pavilions with an APU and try to run a dedicated GPU. - That said, the RX 5500 XT 8gb or RX 56000 XT is a much better buy than an RX 580/590 for a build like this.
The reason rx580/590 is so cheap is because it doesnt support directx 12.2, so some of the glitches might be from that? Last I looked only 2-3 games want 12.2. Not only for polaris, its also a problem with 5600g and 5700g vega APUs and all earlier Ryzen APUs (i own a 5700g). AMD 5600xt - 5700xt GPUs support 12.2.
Once again proving the near sighted PC Enthusiast & Console Fan Boys wrong when they say "you need to drop a thousand to have a decent time gaming on a PC".

@@agent47isn1 I know, that's why I included it in the criteria. It's Asus the only choice? That's way too expensive (probably worth it, but expensive nonetheless). I was expecting something at least $100 cheaper.
@Myako Asus has the best bang for your buck. Levono is OK and stay away from MSI and the Chinese companies you can stay away from unless you like spending $1k for lack of support and terrible customer service
Hey, ETA Prime, I was a bit confused about the 16GB + 4GB configuration you used, Reddit says: "if you add 4gb, only 8gb total will run in dual channel (the 4gb stick + 4gb from the 16gb stick). the rest of 12gb from the 16gb stick will run in dual channel. it's not guaranteed the cpu will use the ram in that order with priority for dual channel, so most likely it will still run in single channel 80% of the time."
it doesn't preform top notch but for a younger kid or someone looking into getting in to gaming and doesn't have the nearly $1000+ to build a top end gaming system for lower end games and I bet even emulation this is pretty dam good!
What PSU is running on this one? Looks great if it can run RX 590 with no issues. I'm using Bazzite on a Dell Optiplex with i5 6th gen but the stock PSU is like 180w. I was afraid that it will not run with my RX 580 so I used my spare ATX 550 watts PSU instead. Since it doesn't fit inside, the PSU is just sitting outside the case. It works but it is janky. I might need to find something like this since sff psu are kinda expensive
I wanna know how this does at emulation too. I don't have a PC correctly and want one to do PC games and emulation, preferably GameCube, Wii, Xbox 360, PS3, and Switch.
I am building one with a r7 1700x+rx 580 8gb and a seagate 1tb m.2 ssd. Would a ethernet cable work? Edit: I got it all setup but I am getting really bad performance. Any idea? It is really bad like 20-25fps on a game I know runs really good on this rig.

Can a 4 gig and a 16 gig stick really run in dual channel? I always assumed you need the same amount of RAM on both sticks for dual channel.
@@feketetv They need to be the same capacity.
They can, but only up until the smallest stick is fully utilized. In this case, he has 8gb dual channel.
Actual dual channel RAM would help A LOT.
Hopefully the timings match up or this could perform worse than a single stick honestly.
no, it doesn't work that way. It runs at single channel. FULL STOP. You have to add another matched stick to get dual channel.
@@Verhagenvictor I haven't ever seen it in any BIOS. Maybe it only appears if you have mismatched ram.
Do these machines usually support resizable bar?
Currently planning to build a D.I.Y P.C out of an old Lenovo desktop.
I was looking into this build as well and noticed the power supply issue. 580/590 8gb recommended 500w to 550w PSU
@@Tony.Cez.Gaming exactly! I wouldn't put anything over a 570 in this. Ideally only something that runs on PCIe power only with that PSU.
@@Tony.Cez.Gaming Ive done a similar unit recently HP 285 G3 and put an Nvidia 1650 super in there which has a 100w tdp. The 590 has a 175w tdp and needs a 450W branded gaming power supply at the bare minimum.. Those weedy HP psu's arent up to it - typical tech youtuber who likes shiny new things but doesn't know what he's doing
Great video, unfortunately just by releasing the video the prices of these machines on ebay went up dramatically I think cuz I couldn't find a single one at that price
woah, very rare full desktop video.
I'm really hoping that we'll start getting AMD small form factor boards that can be powered by a laptop power brick.
Too big for my needs.
Thanks for the review
Important to note that you may run into issues if you get one of those Pavilions with an APU and try to run a dedicated GPU. - That said, the RX 5500 XT 8gb or RX 56000 XT is a much better buy than an RX 580/590 for a build like this.
The reason rx580/590 is so cheap is because it doesnt support directx 12.2, so some of the glitches might be from that? Last I looked only 2-3 games want 12.2. Not only for polaris, its also a problem with 5600g and 5700g vega APUs and all earlier Ryzen APUs (i own a 5700g). AMD 5600xt - 5700xt GPUs support 12.2.
well I run a 5600G with an RX 6600 and so far, I haven't encountered those issues
Once again proving the near sighted PC Enthusiast & Console Fan Boys wrong when they say "you need to drop a thousand to have a decent time gaming on a PC".
Awesome vid , very different of you, thx 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾
I have an arcade unit that I currently run windows on for steam. I had it set to launch in big picture mode but it was buggy as hell and would often give me a blank screen with no way to get out of it. Maybe steam OS is the way to go for me
Nice machine
Hi! Great video, I love tinkering with old hardware myself. I got a dell optiplex with an I5-3470 and an rx470 with linux mint. I play with big picture mode and get a pretty similar experience, not in terms of performance of course but in terms of interface, have you tried that?
I would just buy a used PS5 digital or SX. Similar price, much better performance.
Difference is, you can also use it as a regular PC, and buying games for PC can be a lot cheaper, lots more sales than on consoles.
That the best Steamos version for PC....
I'd like to see a video about how to play non-steam games (GOG For instance) on this with Linux.
I think there's a launch argument to tell the game to boot up in regular Linux mode and not steam deck mode. Deck=0 or something like that?
Hey Mr. Prime, do you have any idea about what happened to the Orange Pi Neo?
In any case, which 7840u/8840u handheld do you think has the best price/value ratio?
Either the Ally Or Ally X any 8840u device is pointless because the performance difference from the 7840u is like 5%
@@agent47isn1 I know, that's why I included it in the criteria.
Id like to see a windows build on this.
Has a old Lenovo S500 PC with an I5 and 8gb of ram, wonder if I could use that for the same purpose?
Great PC
Only possible if you live in the US
So does Bazzite take care of all the "extras" you need to make games like GTA V run? Wine stuff, etc?
I literally just bought a 580 for a work setup! 😂
I like the part where you changed FSR to Balanced and the game immediately looked like puke on the screen.
Hey, ETA Prime, I was a bit confused about the 16GB + 4GB configuration you used, Reddit says:
"if you add 4gb, only 8gb total will run in dual channel (the 4gb stick + 4gb from the 16gb stick). the rest of 12gb from the 16gb stick will run in dual channel. it's not guaranteed the cpu will use the ram in that order with priority for dual channel, so most likely it will still run in single channel 80% of the time."
Prime can I ask you to do a review to nobara project steamos for Nvidia users I like to see that thanks I like your builds
Ever since amd z1 handheld are out budget pcs are kinda pointless
COOL
What is a good budget motherboard/CPU combo that pairs up well with an RX 590?
Emulation Tests please 😁🥺
it doesn't preform top notch but for a younger kid or someone looking into getting in to gaming and doesn't have the nearly $1000+ to build a top end gaming system for lower end games and I bet even emulation this is pretty dam good!
I've got a gaming pc with Windows. But I don't want to switch over to Windows 11. I'm moving over to linux once Windows 10 dies !
Do these use proprietary PSU's like dell? I have a feww SFX Corsair PSU 's sitting around these could make a good low cost rig paired with right GPUs.
I wanna know how this does at emulation too. I don't have a PC correctly and want one to do PC games and emulation, preferably GameCube, Wii, Xbox 360, PS3, and Switch.
11:30 Bro I didn't know you were a Cat person 😅.
Awesome possum
amazing
Windows comparison please. I'm looking for a reason to switch over to Linux
If you can't find a valid reason to switch then just don't
@@Sithhy I can I'm just looking for motivation
Does Bazzite function well for integrated graphics both for most recent version of Intel and AMD CPUs? Say up to 1080p, 60 FPS gaming...
Please compare 500 desktop, 500 laptop, 500 handheld
Do you have the ability to dual boot with bazite? Or choose if you want windows on it too as well as bazite
Hey, there is bsp d10s with a cooler, maybe an in-depth review?
Why bazzite? Better fps than on windows?
it might run games better with same size ram (16gb x2).
I am building one with a r7 1700x+rx 580 8gb and a seagate 1tb m.2 ssd. Would a ethernet cable work?
Edit: I got it all setup but I am getting really bad performance. Any idea? It is really bad like 20-25fps on a game I know runs really good on this rig.
i dont know from what ebay ETA buys his pcs, i have never found any of those listed in the videos : ( (send me a link if disagree) ; )
Emulation performance video?
No Chains of Olympus? 😢
Which do you think is better for making a steam pc, holo iso or bazzite?
Chimera OS, the PC just thinks it's a steam deck with that OS, buy obviously it has more grunt, I've set one up on an old PC, that has a i7 6700k 16GB RAM 2TB SSD and an RX 5700XT, runs everything I play no sweat.
@@steviebhoy25 thank you so much
Would you be able to use Cryoutilities on this machine?
does the steam deck interface detect games that was installed by epic games too?
