You know ironically, Darth Vader's look was partially inspired from Samurai armor. More ironically, Vader is actually closer to the archetype of a samurai with his fealty to the Emperor and close adherence to the Force. Whereas Mitsurugi looks the part, but is very much a ronin.
Fernando Vasquez Kind of, but my point was that Vader behaves and functions more like a true Samurai than Mitsurugi, who just looks the part and fights with a katana. In a fair bit of irony, Vader is closer to the samurai philosophy of Satsujinken, or "the sword that gives life." Where Mitsurugi is closer to Katsujinken, "the sword that takes life." The idea being that to Vader, his lightsaber and the Force in general, is meant to be in service to others. (Albeit in his case, it's to the a tyrannical regime of the Empire.) Where Misturugi sees his sword and skills as a way to exalt himself and crush others under his heel. (Albeit again, in his case he's not a bully picking on those who can't defend themselves.)
Darth Vader behaves more like a true samurai is very true I've watched so many different Samurai movies some of them act like samurai some of them don't. I recently watched an anime that had the word samurai in it but they acted more like ninjas than samurais
Reb is referring to one of his Legends castles, which was build on...I forget where, but it had acid rain and was not Mustafar. In canon though, his castle is indeed on Mustafar. Overlooking lava. And looks scarier.
There are actually plenty of materials in Star Wars that can resist lightsaber blades. While it's true that your average steel sword wouldn't stand up to a lightsaber, it could easily be made of something more durable. Phrik, Cortosis, Mandalorian Iron, and Sith Alchemical Metal could all survive lightsaber blows to greater or lesser degrees. Also, adding to what Ishvallan said below, there was at least one force-wielder who used the force to empower his WALKING STICK, made out of plain, ordinary, everyday WOOD, to parry lightsaber attacks.
There's a reason this fight exists. In Japanese, Mitsurugi's seiyuu, or voice actor, Toshiyuki Morikawa, played the Japanese dub for Obi-Wan Kenobi in the J-dubbed versions of Star Wars that were released in Japan. The developers were probably alluding to that...they're making Vader fight the "Obi-Wan" of the Soulcalibur universe as an easter egg. Also, fun fact: Toshiyuki Morikawa was also the Japanese voice of Sephiroth, Dante, and Ishin Kurosaki.
Because everyone has issue with the lightsaber not just cutting straight through, I'll at least throw some Star Wars canon into the mix. There is an ability shown by several Jedi called Tutaminis which allows the force sensitive person to absorb energy, most usually with the hands, allowing them to absorb or deflect blaster fire (Darth Vader, Empire Strikes Back), absorb or redirect force lightning with the hands or lightsaber (Yoda and Mace Windu, Revenge of the Sith), or to even block a lightsaber using one's bare hands (Satele Shan, The Old Republic). So it is in theory possible given enough focused energy, possibly without knowing they are channeling The Force, to prevent a lightsaber from destroying one's sword. Their ability to withstand lethal attacks from swords and other weapons and have their weapons not break when blocking powerful attacks could be a form of Tutaminis.
There's also a material called "cortosis", which is an alloy strong enough to parry lightsaber attacks. On top of that there's Mandalorian Beskar iron which does the exact same thing. But even with that, it doesn't matter, playing as Darth Vader is fun and that's why they threw him in the game.
yeah it was just to promote upcoming merchandise. but I don't think that the characters from Soul Calibur have discovered metals that are exceptionally rare and hard to manipulate in the galaxy of star wars, let alone to find them in the far future in a galaxy far far away from the Empire
Mitsurugi fought Algol (it was said to be a tied battle), who is arguably one of the strongest beings in the game. Of course he can stand a chance against Darth Vader.
Anakin Skywalker, corrupted by the dark side and is now Darth Vader. He draws upon the dark side, fuelled by rage and anger. His eyes are a burning red and yellow, rapidly aging, deformed appearance and pale white skin underneath the mask and suit.
Beskar Iron, found on Mandalore, was known for its extreme resilience. It was known to block lightsabers. Cortosis metal was able to short lightsabers out along with blocking them, allowing for extreme protection. Vonduun crab chitin was strong and dense enough to resist. Phrik metal was able to block it.
Anyone here ever hear about a warrior infusing his will...his spirit...into his weapon? His sword could've been a plain unassuming iron sword for all we care. Mitsurugi wielding any sword would *_still_* be able to stand up to Darth Vader using only his lightsaber skills.
0:22 Random Raider: He doesn't know I'm here. I'll just sneak around and surprise attack him. He'll never see me coming. Darth Vader: Does he really think I don't know he's there? What the hey, I'll play along.
wanna know something else funny? if starkiller or Darth Vader try to force pull/push, choke, or use force lightning on someone, any of this force abilities are able to be guard impacted if timed correctly.
Aren't there metals in the SW universe that can block a lightsaber? I don't think lightsabers can omnipotently cut through everything. they can just cut really well through most things.
Cortosis weave allows swords in the SW lore to Block lightsabers to an extent. The equivalent of welding a hard edge to a soft core in sword making, but it would have the affect of protecting the edge and blade itself. But again, this is all fantasy.
Lightsabers can actually cut through anything material. As many of you stated here, the lightsaber cannot cut through some armors, vibroblades and other equipment, but this is not due to the weapons or armors material, its actually because these items can generate a energy shield.
It depends on what the sword is made of. If it's made of some magic metal it's unlikely the saber would cut through it as even in the star wars universe there are metals and alloys that light sabers can't cut through.
Well, in the EU of Star Wars, it has been established that mystical or magically enhanced weapons are resistant to lightsabers because of their magical properties. Mitsurugi's sword that he is using here is called Shishi-Oh, it is a legendary sword made by a mystical sword smith. If i'm not mistaken, during his training, Shishi-Oh was infused with the souls of Mitsurugi's ancestors in order to harmonize the blade with his own style of fighting. So yeah, its enough to block a lightsaber.
I always found it funny how they somewhat have you fight pre-built custom characters, but umm... I remember accidentally making the same exact thing, I played as Darth Vader and I was thinking "WHY THE FUCK IS HE FIGHTING MY CHARACTER!?"
I remember getting this game. then going into character selection, then flipping my shit out when I saw vader and star killer with yoda. i didn't know at the time they were in the game
but the sword wouldnt have been made out of phrick, cortosis, mandaloian iron or sith alchemical metal cause the guys a samari and they dont put that stuff in their swords
No, but the ancient Sith could imbue their swords with the force to allow them to withstand lightsabers, so it's feasible Mitsurugi could do something similar with the strength of his soul or something. Heck Vodo Siosk-Baas was able to parry lightsabers with a walking stick.
Kankurō The Puppet Master If you noticed I said strength of soul. Basically fortifying his weapon similarly to how Baas did, just using the power of his soul, rather than the Force.
It's strange how the power of a light saber changes... if it's a movie/cinematic, it instantly kill and the opponent make it's best to avoid it, if it's an action game it make a moderate/major wound and the opponent take caution in his actions, and if it's an rpg, it just progressively "damage" the opponent, who appears to recieve most of the hits without trying to avoid them...
Vibroweapons were common around the Jedi Civil War because as personal energy shields began to become common, blasters were proving ineffective, whereas a vibroweapon could cut through them and the user with ease. Vibroblades were also lightsaber-deflecting and useful against force-users.
If you really think on it, misturugi is super brave to just out-right fight this guy who conjured a laser blade from an empty hilt and is wearing some kind of unique armor. not to mention arrived by spaceship and just owned 3 guys. All mitsu has is a sword too xD So epic.
I think laws of physics stopped applying when people who could fling things around with their will and laser beams capable of cutting through anything first came on the scene.
Mitsurugi carries around a lightsaber-resistant crystal-katana in an age centuries before even electricity and isn't afraid to use it. Now that's a badassery Lord Vader Vader just might have to yield to.
A long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, I, Darth Vader, Dark Lord of The Sith, unleashed the unspeakable power of the Dark Side. But, a foolish samurai warrior wielding a magic sword stepped forth to opposed me.
Oh apologies if I trolled unintentionally - I was just adding materials that could glance off lightsabers - and hence they include Bes'Kar (its Mandalorian iron that is incredibly durable ore that the Mandalorians mined for their weapons and armor), Phrik (you know the IG-100 Magnaguards who serve as General Grievous's escorts who use those electrostaffs - their electrostaffs are made out of phrik alloy metals), water (can short out lightsabers if sufficient in volume)
Which are found on Apatros, I think we would be safe in the assumption that the other gentleman's weapon is neither Mandalorian Iron or Cortosis. And, in any case, he has no means of resisting Vader's mastery of the Force.
My first time seeing it, I at first thought "How..." but then I remembered that it's soul calibur. all the characters have magic weapons, so it can be expected that some of the weapons are indestructible like Mitsurugi's sword
@MediaAmmo Look at it this way. Slip up with a bluntened vibroblade and you MAY get a broken bone. Slip up with a lightsabre and you MAY be lucky enough to live. Cortosis, Mandalorian Iron and Phrik alloy are all lightsabre-resistant, and cortosis can actually temporarily short out a lightsabre blade
In the Star Wars universe, yes. But the story here is about Darth Vader going to SC universe when he realized that a being from another dimension was trying to open a portal to the SW dimension. If you play with since fiction you can come with many explanations as to why the lightsaber didn't cut through a saber made of normal metal but from another dimension. It's fun :P
@MediaAmmo It wouldn't matter how finely made the katana was, a lightsabre blade can cut through almost anything. A lightsabre blade is made of pure energy, focused through polished crystals, which slices through its chosen target by superheating it. Watch the first part of Episode 1, where Qui-Gon's blade nearly melted that door down
Special armor (basically stuff like well Cortosis, Phrik, Vonduun Skerr Kyrric armor), Droidekas (well pretty obvious) or basically one who is Force-Sensitive may attune features of The Force onto any improvised weapon or weapon and can use it to parry a lightsaber.By channeling energy into the weapon, it allowed the wielder to strike and do more damage than the weapon's simple appearance would suggest. Ofc flamethrowers and Sith Lightning can also be used against flamethrowers ...
The reason why it can't cut through his sword is because mirrors deflect light or 'lasers'. His lightsaber doesn't cut through his sword is because his sword is much like a mirror. It's complicated
... you'd really think Vader would be more careful about having duels near volcanoes. Because the last time turned out so well for him.
+The Razielim
Burn.
+Vorgoth Covering most of his body.
It gives him hatred, which gives him power.
And 3rd degree burns.
+The Razielim Hate to be that guy, but his armor is heat resistant. I guess he learned it from the first time.
+The Razielim He did have the high gground tho
I like to imagine Vader carries a built in radio constantly playing his theme song.
Lol
TheHappy_P0tat0 It's coming from the little buttoney thingy on his chest
+TheHappy_P0tat0 yes that's how he does it lol
+TheHappy_P0tat0 me to
That explains why he can't sleep at all! Its not the breathing thats keeping him awake. Its the constant theme song playing over and over!
Soo mitsurugis katana is made from old nokia phones?
+breiker1994 best thing on the internet i've seen today
+Cypher Crisis No Problem :)
That or mandelorian. Though Nokias would make more sense.
Jani Myllyoja Build a bomb shelter out of them shits. lol
Nokia Phones and Gamecubes. The most indestructible products ever made. lol
Probably Beskar (Mandalorian Iron, able to withstand lightsaber strikes).
i always loved that how, no matter how corny the plot became, vader remained vader

and samuel means "to serve"... right?
Fernando Vasquez SamuRAI means "to serve" correct. I'm not sure what Samuel means, though I'm sure it's originally a Hebrew name.
You are powerful... No actualy you are cheating.. What kind of sword is that?!
it might be the work of chi/ki
It would temporarily deactivate Vader's lightsaber if that were the case.
Just read up on Kleef, never said his sword was made of Cortosis. :T
One that goes to the black market?
there are multiple metals that stand up to lightsabers, like cortosis, mandalorian iron, etc.
I have never played Soul Calibur, but I do know my Star Wars, and if I were Vader, I'd NEVER get near lava again...
Reb Station apparently you don't know your Star Wars because Darth Vader literally built his home at the planet where he died
Angel Santiago are you talking about his castle? that was a different planet with acid rain.
Reb Station no, his castle is at the same planet where he lost the fight with Obi wan, where there's literally lava all ober
Angel Santiago his castle is actually built overlooking the spot where lost to Kenobi.
Reb is referring to one of his Legends castles, which was build on...I forget where, but it had acid rain and was not Mustafar. In canon though, his castle is indeed on Mustafar. Overlooking lava.

Vadar: *Slices through Katana like it's soft butter* Did you real think you could trade swords with a Sith?
Vadar
Who is this "Vadar" you speak of? This is clearly Darth Vader, V A D E R.
the phrase is "cross swords"
make some armor out of whatever made that sword
"Dude..all i wanted is to sell this sword...chill out"
Because everyone has issue with the lightsaber not just cutting straight through, I'll at least throw some Star Wars canon into the mix. mattymcardle It's not even just a theroy. It's the truth
Not just a theory, its Game Theory?
With a single stroke, Vader's saber should have cut through the other guy's sword and his body be sliced in half.
yes but then Capcom wouldn't have a game would they?
namco
I don't play these games so thanks for correcting me fam.
Bigtruckseriesreview Motorsports maybe it had a cortosis weave ;)
@@gabethebabe3337 exactly
Dude, Vader can annihilate the entire roster of this series without even using his light saber.
Lol
One of the strangest crossovers I had saw when I was younger, but I loved it.
It's a fucking game people. We know Vader's lightsaber would slice through the sword with ease.
Bruh maybe the sword had some kind of magic and there are many game characters that can take on entire Star Wars characters
The music literally follows Darth Vader
Beskar Iron, found on Mandalore, was known for its extreme resilience. It was known to block lightsabers.
Cortosis metal was able to short lightsabers out along with blocking them, allowing for extreme protection.
Vonduun crab chitin was strong and dense enough to resist.

Who knows, maybe japanese steel really can counter a lightsaber.
Remember that darth vader is from a galaxy far far away...
Darth bader?? Lol
my bad (i wrote too fast)
It happens
Andre.F Montenegro The sword is built of a material similar to cortosis. If it was steel he would've not manage to last long
its a magical samurai sword, there, point settled
spidlenexor like xena once said "if you don't understand something just say that a wizard did it"
spidlenexor It is not a magical sword. It's game logic. Not Star Wars canon logic.

No.
Darth Vader won this fight

Even if the lightsaber doesn't cut through that sword, how much damage is that going to do to Vader's armor?
Mitsurugi can be glad Soul Calibur abolished breakable weapons after the first game.
thats some bullshit
vaders lightsaber would cut clean straight through that sword
+pacman30ify Then there wouldn't be a game.

Not if it is madre from cortosis
Thanks to the Mandolarian, we now know after all those years that Misturugis sword is made of beskar
Or Cortosis (play: KOTOR I and II, and Jedi Knight: Jedi Outcast). Or protected by some power (Jedi Academy - Scepter of Ragnos).
Aren't there metals in the SW universe that can block a lightsaber?
I don't think lightsabers can omnipotently cut through everything. they can just cut really well through most things.
There are even metals in the SW universe that can disable the lightsaber when it comes in contact with it.
Glorious nippon steel, duh
Cortosis weave allows swords in the SW lore to Block lightsabers to an extent. The equivalent of welding a hard edge to a soft core in sword making, but it would have the affect of protecting the edge and blade itself. But again, this is all fantasy.

wouldent a lightsaber...cut a sword in half
Yes. But that might have been a glitch in the game.
Deadman3RIP MAGIC SWORD like Samurai Jack
for the the game they said that for whatever space magic that the lightsabers where rendered like regular swords

Well, in the EU of Star Wars, it has been established that mystical or magically enhanced weapons are resistant to lightsabers because of their magical properties. regardless on how the lightsaber should obviously cut through the sword it still look badass

No blood in soul calibur but lots of fighting.
Holy shit, Mitsurugi got that Mandalorian Iron sword there.
Wow Vader is going to have a hell of a story to explain to Palpetine.
don't you just love it when the highest rated comments are the same?
Legend says they still have their blades crossed to this day.
Vibroweapons were common around the Jedi Civil War because as personal energy shields began to become common, blasters were proving ineffective, whereas a vibroweapon could cut through them and the user with ease. Vibroblades were also lightsaber-deflecting and useful against force-users.

that sword must be pretty special to stand up against a lightsaber
Mitsurugi carries around a lightsaber-resistant crystal-katana in an age centuries before even electricity and isn't afraid to use it. Now that's a badassery Lord Vader Vader just might have to yield to.
Actually, in the star wars universe there are a multitude of things that can stop a lightsabre, some like Cortosis, can even fry them.
i love when vader get in battle his breathing is harder and when he not his breathing normal it just the small details
And he's just there for no apparent reason whatsoever.
Wouldn`t the Lightsaber just be able to cut his sword in half.
A long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, I, Darth Vader, Dark Lord of The Sith, unleashed the unspeakable power of the Dark Side. But, a foolish samurai warrior wielding a magic sword stepped forth to opposed me.
Indeed, we have too much of these canons in the Expanded Universe that the basics of a lightsaber are beginning to fall apart

Darth Vader: You dare challenge me? You must be CHOKING!
I like how they had to make him a PS3 exclusive in the beginning so they could hype up sales.
Heishiro MItzurugi have never had an opponent like Vader. This is the real contest.
Dont you get just a little nervous about a metal looking man using a bright sword that seemingly comes out of nowhere
Vader: The force is strong with you, samurai. But you are not a Jedi yet.
His sword is obviously forged with Cortosis & was crafted by Echani smiths
Which are found on Apatros, I think we would be safe in the assumption that the other gentleman's weapon is neither Mandalorian Iron or Cortosis. And, in any case, he has no means of resisting Vader's mastery of the Force.
Wow lightsaber didnt even cut through the sword
Could be Mandalorian steel
Darth Vader started to use both hands to grasp his lightsaber at the end.
So he is some-what "trying".
My first time seeing it, I at first thought "How..." but then I remembered that it's soul calibur. all the characters have magic weapons, so it can be expected that some of the weapons are indestructible like Mitsurugi's sword

Lava, how fitting.
Oh, and in the expanded Star Wars Universe they explain that metal using Cortosis weave can withstand Lightsaber blows.
Dat ponytail blowing in the wind.... it defies physics!
Cortosis, Mandalorian iron, Neuranium, Phrik, Songsteel, and Ultrachrome are all lightsaber resistant materials.
This is my favorite Soul Calibur game eve cause it has Star Wars characters and it lets you have you costume characters in the theme
It's been around 9 years since the release of a semi-enjoyable Soul Calibur game
the spear is energyloaded so it produces an energyshield that can repel a lightsaber.
Wake up, Ostrheinsburg! Lightsabers aren't strong enough to melt steel beams!
it's cool to see that vader still fights one handed in this cutscene
Its a laser sword , so its actually bundled Light . Light gets Reflected by polished steel , you might know .
