  • One common problem with watch hands is that after they have been removed many times they tend to start opening up and will no longer stay secure on the canon pinion or hour wheel.
This is a fix for a watches hour and minute hands using a tool that most watchmakers already have.

The best purchase so far is my staking set. Now I have another use for it I didn’t know about! Thanks for posting

Finally I found this video to fix the hands. If the tube of the hand is cracked (so will not tighten) , can we fix it? Thanks.

Thanks, man. This is just what I was looking for. Your technique worked perfectly, and I even have the exact same staking set.

That’s awesome to hear. It’s a hell of a staking said isn’t it

Is there any risk of damaging the finely finished side of the hour hand while pushing it slightly over (and against) the steel bench of the staking set?

I just ran into this over Christmas. I built a buddy a watch and mailed it to him. He said it was great, but he noticed it on :50 after the hr after walking his dog.. EVERY TIME! We figured out when he throws his ball.. that motion is slinging the min hand to that position. Not cool.. but an easy fix.
I did the full rotation a few times with the crown and ran it for 3 days on my bench to make sure it was working well before shipping and didn't notice the issue. How should i test for this in the future other than playing racquetball w/ each watch i build?
Thanks again for the help 👍

Nice one Alex! Can you use this technique to take a hand up or down a size! Or is there a different technique to make a big difference in size?

Yes, you can close hr and minute hands to and then some times you can use a smoothing brooch to increase the size.

Awesome video!!! Very detailed! Subscribing to your channel. I did the same thing with a hour hand that was loose and got it to fit tight but for some reason when Im wearing the watch it seems the hours hand has moved from the set time. I removed the top cover and checked it and its pretty tight. It may be something wrong with the hours gear?

My pocket watch arms aren't working, and just hang down in whatever direction is down. Basically they're attached, but do not hold, they just hang down with gravity. Any idea what the problem could be?

Without knowing the history of the watch it would be guessing but here’s a couple scenarios
If you just bought the watch off of eBay, someone could’ve put a set of hands on the adult fit in order to be able to sell it.
If the hands do go with the watch then it’s possible that the hour wheel in Canon pinion have become loose. Which could be for various reasons.
But most likely they’re not pressed down far enough.
What happens when you put it in the time settings position and try to change the hands ?
