  • In this video I show a collection of Really Cheap Watches and how to repair a second hand that fell off a new watch during shipping. In a few sections the video is blacked out because I accidentally showed my name and address.

so pleased to see someone demonstrating the basics on a cheap watch. imo there are lots of kids who would be quite interested in getting into watch repair, and experts aren't that interested in pushing them into these unbelievably cheap resources that are now everywhere. most people can learn to change hands, dials, crystals and straps, and they can learn to regulate a cheap mechanical movement (often for huge accuracy improvement). all these operations basically treat the caliber as a black box, before people build up the courage to dismantle a mechanism, which is easily possible with a $20 watch. fwiw i think you should zoom in on the stem release button ... a noob might have got confused there. personally i'd like to see you talking about the tevise t801a ... they're generating quite a bit of interest for being too cheap to take seriously and yet surprisingly similar to pricier rolex sub homages. they mostly work fine (the one i regulated went from over a minute out to +4s per day) and if they break a new watch is a cheap fix and you get a bunch of great parts to play with (i'm currently wondering how the dial feet attach to the movement, which may or may not be a tongji)

I love the you brought the Elgin back to life. I agree that a watch takes on an intrinsic value over time. Keep up the great work!

Big help... Was able to fix my son's discarded no-name "quartz" watch following your instructions. Had no such tools as you used, but instead used the nose of a plastic pen barrel...THANKS!

Thank you. I really enjoy the Elgin watch. I would love to find the original owner and give it back to them. See the look on their face.

We got a similar watch like the one in the video, a cheap watch from China with similar price, only the colour and appearance were different. The hour hand was moving into the wrong place when flipping the watch. Many thanks to the video, the watch was fixed by simply watching the video! Thank you so much!

Great Video ! The only other thing I do when i need to open up a dial is set the main hands in the correct position by moving the minute hand to the 12 position with the crown and then lining up the hour hand to the closest hour, I could see on the watch you worked on this needed to be done.

Nice vid. I noticed on the Elgin that the bezel numbers are backwards but the dial is not. How is it possible?

I bought a mechanical Elgin with a black dial for my husband for his birthday that isn't running. I'm just getting into watch repair, very new, and while I can take down and put a watch back together, I don't have the optics yet to do all the oiling. So I took the Elgin to a local jewelry store that does watch repair, to see what he would charge to restore it. The case needs replating, some of it is peeling off. The watch guy says 1) the watch isn't worth repairing, can't get parts and 2) you can't replate cases made of base metals or it will cause leaks and problems that will ruin the watch. But I see people on UA-cam repairing inexpensive watches like this all the time. What's your opinion on this, please?

You taught me two things: 1. how to remove the adjusting needle of the watch; 2) loosen hands not necessarily means the end of the watch, just a bit more patience and "snaps" can actually fix them. Thanks really.

I have a watch where the second hand is solid on the shaft but the minute and hour hands spin independently . Do I need to remove the second hand to fix the minute and hour hands?

I have a vintage swiss small hand wind divers with an ETA movement that also says Stainless Steel Back and there's no sign of any wear on the case if it is a chromed brass or something other than stainless !!

Thanks to your video I was able to repair my broken watch from China. The hands were hitting each other. Second hand was colliding with minute hand. Thank you so much. Do you recommend pulling stem out on quartz watches to conserve battery life? I have several and sometimes they don’t get worn very much. Any input is appreciated!

    • @WatchTimePlus
      @WatchTimePlus  5 років тому

Pulling the stem out will indeed save the battery on most watches as long as you don't mind setting the date and time when you sue them.

The reason that China manufacturers can ship so cheap is mainly because of a deal made between eBay and the USPS. It costs nearly nothing for the seller to ship. So now not only are our manufacturing jobs gone to China, but now eBay sellers that buy direct from China are getting squeezed as it becomes difficult to sell the same widget for $9 when they have to compete with the manufacturer who can now sell the same widget.straight to your door for $3....

Great information. I have ordered many things directly from china and have rarely had an issue. The defective watch in this review was one of them. The seller said they would send me a replacement, but it never arrived.

Wish someone would do a video using a multifunction watch. My sons Bulova has three extra dials, day, date pointers and a 24 hr dial. I haven't yet figured out how to get all the dials synchronized without removing and installing hands multiple times!

I have a cheap quartz watch where, when you take the movement out, all the hands will fall out and stay on the face side, and i can't seem to get the watch face off at all. there's a metal insert basically holding it there. Looks pressed in. Now there's no way for me to get inbetween the glass and the face :( What am I supposed to do?

There is an old Agreement between the US and China that the United States would cover the shipping costs in the United States. So Chyna doesn’t have to pay anything once a gets to our soil. That’s how they ship it so cheaply

Hello, I have a cheap watch I want to fix, I changed the battery and when I turned the watch back over all the hands fell off, so I followed your tutorial on removing the mechanical part of the watch but realised the frame is metal and I can’t get to the actual face of the watch, how do I remove the glass from the front of the watch to get to the hands?
