I have been crocheting for over 50 years. I also appreciate people being paid an equitable wage for their crocheting skills. That being said, unless that actual designer Miu Miu $1400.00 bag was made with 100% cashmere yarn and 24 kt. golden threads, lovingly hand spun by fairies in a magical woodland cottage at the exact apex of the vernal equinox (and crocheted whilst doing handstands), there is no way in hades that the bag should command that ridiculous price. Yes, crochet can not be machine manufactured. Yes, that makes it a unique fiber art form. But crocheting is not difficult. It's not dangerous. It is not rare. $1400.00 is an insane price and anyone who would fork over that kind of money for a crocheted bag should be held under a conservatorship. My advice to anyone willing (and ABLE) to pay $1400.00 for that bag is to look into philanthropic avenues for spending that loose cash you have burning holes in your pockets. But the dupe was spot on.

Usually with designer brands I hate the pricing, but with a crochet piece I can’t say I’m mad at it. Just hope the maker is actually getting paid fairly.

Unfortunally I don´t think that the maker get´s fairly paid just because all miu miu bags are super expensive. The canvas bags are all over 1000 bucks and the leather ones ovewr 2000 bucks.
They probably are not. Workers in fashion are just not greatly paid with insane work loads. And most of the profit ends up with higher corporate.
I’m not sure a crochet piece of that size is worth the asking price….
Somehow, I doubt it. In general, designer brand prices do not translate to higher pay for production workers.
The hair tinsel is a good idea, but if you want glitter or sparkle in your work you can also pick up a spool of glittery sparkly embroidery thread for like $3 at Joann's or any sewing/craft store. I do that for Christmas ornaments and stuff like that. You just crochet it in with whatever yarn you're using.
I love the end result and your own flare on it. If it were me I’d remove the brand name off of it, maybe replace it with a play on the inspiration piece, like “mew mew” or something. I’m definitely inspired to make a scrap purse like that now! ❤

Thanks for sharing your process. I had never heard of Miu Miu but I really liked the colours and scrappy look so I made one similar and added Me Me for my lettering which makes me laugh! I found a new bag in a charity shop for £2 and disassembled it and was able to use the liner with zip and handle so that was great!

I have made and designed several bags with crochet. I took them out and about to check and see if anybody mentioned they liked it or whatever. Usually in the grocery store the cashier or another customer will say oh I like that bag and I say oh I made it thank you. Would you mind telling me how much you might pay for this bag. They look me straight in the eye and they say oh I don't know 10, 15 or maybe $20? Original design, hand stitched lining, custom pockets for phones or whatever and this is what they're willing to pay. The same with twin or full size blankets. People are willing to pay $300 or $600 for a handmade quilt even sewn by machine but they offer me $25 intricately designed and stitched crocheted blanket. I don't get it.
well, there are group of people who understand value of hand made things, but mass of people don't understand that. Recently i made 2 dolls to my cousin and she liked it so much and she was like: why you don't sell your stuff, but i know how long it takes to make, to design original peace, how much materials costs I also working, so it's really hard to find a buyer who would buy it for a price is worth of all work.
That's because they're used to seeing cheaply produced imported goods and just don't get it.
I still think the hair tinsel is a genius idea even if it was a pain at first, well worth it, the bag looks great you did an amazing job. I might even try hair tinsel in some of my small Christmas projects thanks to your great idea!

But for the same price or less than one of those bundles you can get a skein of iridescent embroidery floss and have much less difficulty with the longer length

This is fabulous looking. Definitely worth more $17! By the way, the Large summer beach tote bag which is also a faux crochet is selling for almost $4,000. I'm about ready to go dive headfirst into my scrap Collection and give that a shot.
I have my eyes on a Prada beach bag remake that is something like 4k so maybe thatll be coming up soon! But yay!!! Get rid of that scrap yarn my friend!!!
So fun, and thank you! I've made two afghans in this manner, so scrap double strand DC is not new to me. I saw this and thought I could quickly whip up 2 bags for birthday gifts next week. I looked online at these bags and saw they were not lined and thought how dumb it was to not have lining. Then I finished watching your video....great minds think alike! I'm off to order the supplies needed, but in the meantime, I'll knock out the crochet panels and stitch the linings and zippers together. Love love love the way this turned out! Brilliant idea for the hair tinsel! If you make another one, maybe try building the sides by crocheting in the round. If you start at the center of one of the short ends of the bottom, you can still get the side seam look on one side of the bag. Or, you can make it look seamless if you prefer. First time I peaked at your channel I think you’re an awesome young girl with so much energy and determination. I really think everyone in the whole wide world that happens to be on UA-cam gives you a thumbs up you deserve it. You have worked so hard to do your version of this bag, I feel so bad that you’re having a hard time with the tinsel. I’m sure whoever ends up with this bag if it’s not, you will be so very happy to have one and if they’re not and they seem a little standoffish with the compliments. I suggest they take a few minutes and look at your channel. The brand Miu Miu is a side branch of Prada and the "crochet" bags they offer is not actually crocheted, they look mass manufactured also. They found something that looks close to crochet stitching but it's not really. But hey I'm glad it's some inspiration for you to make a real version! ❤
Hmmm... this is a good point. I guess it would be very hard to believe someone hand crochets these bags.. I didnt even consider this. Thank you for the very educated insight. Maybe they can hire me to make like... 6 of the real crochet ones, Ill gladly take a cut of $1400😂
Actually, I just googled the bag, and zoomed in on the picture, and it's most definitely crocheted. You can clearly see the stitches.

They pay people in impoverished countries by the piece. They aren't paid well at all.
I was examining photos from the miu miu website of the pouch and couldn’t figure out what stitch it was but taking another look, that shit is straight up knitted. It’s knot top down and every other stitch is slipped together alternating rows to look like crochet. 😒😒😒 Wtf.
