In this week’s episode, we’re shooting our final shot at predictions for the 2024 World Figure Skating Championships - this time discussing the men’s and dance competitions. From the “Trivalry” we’re expecting to see between Ilia Malinin, Shoma Uno, and Yuma Kagiyama in the men’s event to a probable four-way race for the podium in the dance event, we’re holding our breath for these two competitions.
    Men’s Competition
This season has been an incredibly strong one in the men’s division, making this event possibly the most competitive and anticipated of the World Championships events.
Coming in off his Grand Prix Final win, Ilia Malinin heads to Montreal as a definite favorite for the podium. He didn’t have the best US Nationals, but also didn’t have much competition there - so its possible that lessened his preparation.
Regardless, he recently shared a quad toe loop / quad axel combination he’s doing in practice - throwing an absolute gauntlet down to the rest of the field and clearly stating that he will be tough to beat if he skates cleanly.
However, he’s not alone in the “favorites” camp - Japan’s Yuma Kagiyama and reigning World Champ, Shoma Uno, are coming in looking phenomenal. Kagiyama showed up better than ever at Four Continents back in February - taking that title in a dominant fashion and giving him a ton of momentum coming into Worlds.
Uno has looked solid all season, but hasn’t had quite the consistency and has been “plagued by the q” (I.e. quarter understated jumps) on a few occasions. We’re crossing every finger and toe that he can bring to Montreal his fight and his special artistic magic - and get on that podium again!
Also in the medal mix, the early-season frontrunner - Adam Siao Him Fa - comes in after having along break since winning his second European title. His last three competitions have looked a bit messier than the near-perfection of the first half of the season, but you cannot count out this exceptional Frenchman on the rise.
Japan’s Kao Miura arrives hungry to his first World Championships - and has far less pressure on him than his countrymen. It’ll be very interesting to see what he can bring to the ice here.
There are quite a few other men here who could show up and surprise everyone, including one of skating’s favorite sons, Jason Brown of the U.S, who is a wild card here but can never be counted out. All in all, this feels like the first real step towards the next Olympics and expect to see some big programs here.
    Ice Dance Competition
Reigning World Champions, Madison Chock & Evan Bates of the US, come here seeking a repeat win and two great skates in their adopted hometown of Montreal - and we’re here for all of that.
However, Canada’s darlings, Piper Gilles & Paul Porrier, have home country advantage as well as the highest score of the season.
Not to be outdone, Italy’s Charlene Guignard & Marco Fabbri have shown extraordinary performances throughout the season and may be the most consistent of the top three teams. So, while Ice Dance is usually the most predictable, this competition feels like a toss up between the three powerhouse teams.
Waiting just a tiny bit behind them and ready to take a big step forward are Great Britain’s Lilah Fear & Lewis Gibson. They had a big surprise victory over Guignard & Fabbri at NHK Trophy last fall, and under the right circumstance on the right day, could slide onto the podium. It’s a long-shot, but not impossible.
What is wonderful about this competition is that there are also no less than a dozen other excellent teams all vying for top 10 finishes here. From Lithuania’s brilliant Allison Reed & Saulius Ambrulevicius fresh off their European bronze medal to Finland’s inventive Juulia Turkkila & Matthias Verslus to France’s Evgeniia Lopareva & Geoffrey Brissaud who recently went viral with their rave-inspired exhibition program - there will be a lot of skating to love regardless of placement.

It's nice to have such a strong field of men this year. Some of last year's comps were fairly disappointing, but this is a terrific group of competitors.

Lilah and Lewis always bring so much energy to the event! I'm rooting for them to podium. I also feel like they will do well during the Olympic year because their programs are so engaging and modern.

F/G have big potential over the next two years. And agree that their style has a greater chance of garnering interest from casual/non-fans. This sport doesn't tend to like new and different (we do, though!) but if it wants a bigger audience again, it has to evolve.

You've really put me into the mood for the competition. Both of these could be complete CHAOS, which is just how we like it!

This note is for Wendy Buske: it’s the day after the men’s Short Program and I share your love of Shoma Uno and your concern that he may not really care about his placement at Worlds anymore. But . . . now we have seen his amazing sp performance against Yuma and Ilia, and I can predict one thing: Shoma is skating in full competition mode for the first time this season. He has finally broken in his new skates so he is not skating on broken, taped-up boots (yes, he really did that for the entire season) and he is benefitting at last from high-quality jumping advice from Ghislain Briand. Plus, Shoma now knows that he under-rotates jumps and is seriously working on it (thank you, NHK judges). Shoma said he’s in the best shape of his life. If he had a more accessible free skate like last season’s Aria, instead of Timelapse, I think I’d count on him to win it all. As it is, at least he’ll be on the podium. Let the battle begin!

I really hope for Wladimir Samoilow to be top 10. He was amazing at Euro, and he jump to 7th place after FP! Amazing jumps and flexabillity! After bad season from Kurakowa, Poland deserves some hope

We didn't know a lot about Vladimir, so I just read an interview with him to get more familiar. He's gone through a lot of challenges to be able to compete for Poland. We hope Worlds goes well for him. And for Katia! She's one of our favorites, it would be nice for her to end her season on a high note!

Well, the men Worlds are good to be more fierce than the past; look for the top 10 would be closed to French Fa and Mallanin and don't forget Uno and Yama and Korean Cha, and Kaz skater who used to compete with Ilia Mallanin in the Juniors Worlds, Canadian and Brown and Camden Pulkenin, Italian and Israeli skater...1st United States of America, 2nd Japan, 3rd French 4th Kaz skater 5th Japan 6th United States of America 7th Israel skater, 8th United States of America 9th Israel skater and 10th Canadian skater respectively... but I can stand correctly but I am biased and I only routed and cheered for my own country USA; Go USA!!! As for the Ice Dance Skaters, 1st United States of America 2nd Canadian 3rd Italian 4th Canadian 5th United States of America 6th Britain 7th French 8th LAT 9th United States of America 10th Canadian/ Italian, but I can stand corrected.... but again, I am biased and I only routed and cheered for the United States of America because they are CAPABLE to medal, but confidence is the key so I expect them to be fierce competitive skating: but the judging system is subjective and everyone must execute both of their programs as they practiced..
❤❤❤ Thanks for sharing your podcast and I enjoyed it!!!!

@@scoreography I don't think 🤔 so because I enjoyed what you said about how you feel about your favorites and what you think 🤔 of the potential of each contender; but I am biased and I only routed and cheered for USA because they are against all odds and I expect the unexpected and the agony of defeat too when the contenders lose their confidence in their skills and their training and teaching; if they stay focused, they should be able to execute their programs, and feel good about each program regardless of how the judges score them make them winners in my book 📚!!! I listened to the commentators like Ted and Mark for the juniors and at Nationals, I enjoyed Ashley and Adam when they explained each discipline and the athletes and which team to watch for ice dance contenders and commented on the pairs because they were basically new teams in their partnership except for Chan and Howe coming off from injuries and made a smart move to withdraw and explained each pair team and would be able to go to WORLDS to represent USA; the 2nd place medalists could not 🚭🚫 nor Partman either (McBeath and Partman) but hopefully next time would be different!! Did you know that the pairs had to be invited to compete at US National Championship of Figure Skating?!! Well, that is for all the disciplines as a matter of fact nowadays; I didn't know that before Nationals...I thought 🧐 that everyone could compete, but that had changed too, but thanks for sharing your insights and thought; I appreciate your statement even though I disagreed!!!!

Unless Chock and Bates really flub it, I think that they will take the gold medal. Piper and Paul will probably take the silver. The surprise could be that the Italians could get the silver. It would be interesting if the British or Lithuanian team medaled. I was in tears watching them at Europeans.

I can’t wait to watch you’re review of the competition because that other one, TSL was a whole lot of nothing but gossip, boasting about his so called skating career of single salchows, and oddly about Madison Hubbell who is not even competing anymore 🙄 . I’m sure yours will be about the skaters and the field of play.
