    The 2024 World Figure Skating Championships in Montreal gave us several moments we expected, others we wished for, and whole lot we never could have predicted. Most of all, it gave us countless extraordinary skating moments we won’t soon forget.
    Men’s Competition
    The formal coronation of the Quad God, Ilia Malinin, as the biggest rockstar in men’s figure skating happened here-with a program that literally had us screaming in our living room in disbelief.
    In the silver slot, the utterly brilliant Yuma Kagiyama skated in a way that would have won him any other title on any other night.
    In third, with the biggest comeback ever seen in ISU competition, was Adam Siao Him Fa from France. As if jumping from 19th to 3rd with an incredibly powerful free skate wasn’t enough, he was second in the free program only to Ilia - and did that while also including an illegal backflip that cost his 2 points.
    Pairs Competition
    All season long, we’ve been watching Deanna Stellato-Dudek & Maxime Deschamps look like they were ready to take that step into being World Champions - but a few moments during the season had us worried the title may not happen this year. Our worries were wasted, thankfully, as Deanna and Maxime put down two dazzling programs that led to their history-making win on home soil in Canada.
    Riku Muira & Ryuchi Kihara came to Montreal with a lot of question marks. With a win in the free skate and a silver medal overall, they silenced all of those who doubted them and shined like the champions they are.
    Taking the bronze medal were the surprise pair of the season, Germany’s Minerva Fabienne Hase & Nikita Volodin.
    Women’s Competition
    Kaori Sakamoto proved again why she’s in a league of her own right now in the women’s division, coming back from a 4th place finish in the short program to win her third gold medal.
    Taking a bit of a surprise silver, Isabeau Levito came back from a rough US Nationals to skate two exceptional programs and earn her first World medal.
    In third for the bronze was Chaeyeon Kim from South Korea - who skated a near flawless free skate to move up from 6th to 3rd.
    Ice Dance Competition
    Madison Chock & Evan Bates decimated the rhythm dance, earning a sizable lead that they needed after a small mistake in the free dance-which was still absolutely gorgeous and enough to earn them their second world title.
    The silver went to the hometown heroes, Canda’s Piper Gilles & Paul Poirier, who won the free dance with the best performance of their Wuthering Heights program of the season.
    In the bronze position was Italy’s Charlene Guignard & Marco Fabbri, who turned in two extraordinary performances that may have been the most technically sound of the event.

    Ilia eyes when he step in ice 😮, I was like “the boy is rock, he was so armored. How he did get such powerful mentality with 19 years old? He was watching Yuma to find out the score he needed, he changed his jumps to go as high as possible, this boy is unbelievable.

    As an Adam fan, I watched as it was happening live, every jump, and then the backflip. When I watched Shoma, then he fall twice. I was floored when I realized he got a medal. I loved Yuma's skate, especially where he started the year. I watched the entire thing live and couldn't be happier that I saw it
    Adam was gold in my heart especially after ovation he got when he came to get his Bronze medal I know the true fans were able to stay and watch him stay in first until almost very end.

      We were kicking ourselves so hard when we realized we'd missed Adam's skate live. Even watching it in replay, knowing he'd take the bronze, we were astonished with how powerful it was. This whole event was so exciting (and we're still kind of exhausted in the aftermath)!

    Deanna and Max had the moment of the season for me. I was sobbing because that win was not only a reflection of their athletic craft. It was a symbol to women everywhere that we are capable of so much more than society tries to make us believe they are. Ilia was on FIRE! Isabeau showed so much mental strength here. I have loved Chock and Bates RD for the past few years but their free dances recently seem to highlight their lack of speed and power. I hope they pivot to a new direction that is better suited to their strengths next season.

      Totally agree on Deanna & Max. She is an ICON, and we hope her success paves the way for more veteran/older skaters. But, also, how rock solid was Max here?? Talk about the calm in the storm.
      I (Adron) think C/B have worked to create highly complicated, inventive free dances that lean hard into modern dance sensibilities. I love that stylistically, but it does come at the cost of losing some of the simple beauty and dramatic moments other teams capture. Ice Dance just leaves zero room for flaws (it's wild that the other disciplines, with insane lifts and jumps, are far more forgiving). That FD was far better earlier in the season, but I still really like it.

    So many stand-out 'moments' this year, up and down the fields. Some that stood out for me:
    Josefin Tallegard's short programme displaying her amazing performance skills and bringing the whole stadium to its feet;
    Piper and Paul winning the Free with a jaw-droppingly beautiful performance - time stood still for 4 minutes;
    Hannah and Ye's 'Umbrella's' programme - that choreo hydro move at the end of the programme had me gasping. They've truly arrived!
    Overall, a wonderful Worlds! Can't wait for next season to begin.

    A few "fact checks" because I'm a skating nerd: Nathan placed 17th in the short program at the Pyeongchang Olympics, and first in the free, to place 5th overall. Amber Glenn placed 11th in the short program at the Grand Prix of Espoo, was second in the free, and won the bronze medal.

    Adam's redemption was the highlight of the championship. I was so sad after his short program; I even had a hard time sleeping that night. I was crushed for him. It's easy for me to relate because I have anxiety, and it can really change the way I react in this kind of situation. On Saturday, I watched the first group alone, and when I saw him step on the ice, I started to cry! I just wanted him to overcome his stress and show everyone how talented he is. I was completely in tears before the end of the program, and I KNEW he was going to do the backflip. So happy for him that he medaled, but most importantly, he got to skate how he loves.

    Chae-yeon kim was my favourite in the women's. Best jumping technique. Always skates to interesting music. Hana Yoshida is very creative too. Men were the best . Ilia is phenomenal. That music was perfect for him . For such a massively technical program ,he had some really nice choreographical nuances to the music and transitions. He is an exceptional spinner too. His gala performance was refreshing and brilliant. He is what this sport needs. Him and Adam so exciting to watch. Ha-ein lee SP was absolutely stunning she is the step sequence queen. Piper and Paul had the most creative and fully immersive free dance. They are the ultimate storytellers. Love the Italian's and the younger french team. Beautiful modern Clair de Lune. Isabeau very pretty skater , nice transitions and beautiful presentation.

    I think it's already established wisdom that Ilia Malinin is the greatest jumper in the history of figure skating. It's not simply that he does the jumps but he makes them look simple. One skating commentator said he makes quads look like triples. My observation is that he looks as comfortable in the air as he is on the ice. It's only a few years since we left the age of Hanyu when it comes to skating competition. There were two brief interludes where neither Nathan Chen nor Shoma Uno could command the attention that Yuzuru Hanyu commanded when he was competing, even after he started losing major competitions to Nathan Yuzu remained the one who set the standards, who defined what great skating is. We are now entering the age of Malinin and I think he has both the ability and (just as important) the charisma to define the era, Right now it looks like we'll be charting the campaign that will take Ilia to Milan two years from now and if you are thinking this might all be hype, one question I'll ask to make my point; When was the last time (if ever) that a skater entering senior level competition medaled in every competition in which he skated with the overwhelming number of them being gold? Ilia did this and yet, you can see this in his interviews, he is in awe of what he has accomplished and determined to take things further. This is precisely the mindset Yuzu had in his early years of skating. He always bowed to his coach in the kiss and cry, letting the world know his was a joint accomplishment. Ilia, however, has a different relationship to his coaches as they are also his parents. I think that both of them were experienced skaters back in the 90s will enable him to avoid the pitfalls other skaters might succumb to. His parents are there to act as his ego circuit-breakers.

    • @scoreography
      @scoreography  3 місяці тому

      Your point about his combination of ability and charisma is an important one. Seeing Ilia live gave us some perspective on how much power he has over an audience. And it's not just that the technical feats are so explosive and impressive - and they are! - but that, like any true performer, he amplifies and reciprocates all the energy he gets from the crowd. If he can refine that emotional feedback loop with the audience (and judges) beyond pure excitement, with increased nuance and emotional range, he'll become even more than the greatest jumper ever.

    After Ilia's 6 quads were done and not a bobble at any of them his last jumping pass was a triple lutz and triple axle. That alone for another skater would be a score builder but for him it was nothing as he already blew the competition away.

    A couple of observations/corrections.
    Re: Korean men, the two men besides Junhwan Cha actually had a reasonably good showing. For Hyungyeom Kim, who competed on the junior circuit this year, to make the free at his first Worlds and end up as the 2nd ranked Korean man was a great achievement. Sihyeong Lee is more experienced, but he can be inconsistent, so making the free for him was good. Korea will have 2 spots at the next Worlds, in line with expectations.
    Re: Alexander Selevko: unfortunately, he needed to be in the 10 to qualify the second spot for Estonia. It was a bummer that he did not achieve that. Still, the score at Worlds was 2nd best in his entire career, and the 11th place he got was the highest placement for an Estonian man ever. So Alexander has something to be proud of. His placement in the top 12 also guarantees him 2 spots on the Grand Prix next year. If he continues to be consistent, his rankings and PCS marks will rise.

    • @scoreography
      @scoreography  4 місяці тому +1

      Yes, we acknowledged to another commenter that our remarks about the other two Korean men weren't about their performances, just rankings. And with Alexandr, we forgot that if you only have one entry that you need to be in Top 10 to earn 2 spots. This system for earning next year's spots sucks and is something this sport needs to change.

      @@scoreography I was thinking maybe it should be based on merit or scores rather than countries.

    • @scoreography
      @scoreography  4 місяці тому +2

      @@L.Spencer Our main issue is the previous season deciding on spots for the next. This carryover between seasons is super weird in sports, where most* competitive seasons start with a clean slate. The slots for worlds should be determined in-season, by the results of who is _actively_ competing - not based on previous seasons results, from skaters who might no longer be competing, or whose underperformance determines the fate/opportunities of others in the current season.
      Re: not by country - It is unfortunate that there are terrific skaters at a higher competitive level/success rate that get shut out of Worlds, while less-capable skaters from other countries get the opportunity. (Thinking of, say, Shun Sato or Sota Yamamoto, here.) The problem of not limiting entries from a particular country would be having a single nation's team flood the Worlds comp in a single discipline - like Japan could do now in Mens, or Russian could have done in Womens (particularly before the age requirement shift). Few things could kill international interest in the sport faster than one country dominating a championship comp with 6-9 representatives and sweeping podiums almost by default.
      *"most" could be an exaggeration, we obviously don't follow every sport out there. But, being US centric, it would be like baseball determining what teams got into the playoffs based on their previous year's performance. Who would want that?

    At the 2018 Olympics, Nathan Chen was in 17th place after the short program, with his rocky performance, similar to his uncharacteristic outing in the sp for the Olympic team competition. Nathan came back from 17th in the men's sp to first in the free skate. But it was only good enough for 5th place (I thought Nathan should have been in third or at least 4th overall, but the judges ruled differently). In his free skate, Nathan landed 5 quads cleanly, and historically, he attempted a 6th quad, but it was not cleanly landed.

They’re also a lot younger than the Koreans and to be honest the term “baby goats” especially on twitter is mainly used for them. They’ve been in ice dance for only 4 years and they are already junior world champions and placed 11th in the free dance here at the world championships so that’s even bigger accomplishment than the Koreans have. I would just think that if you’re admiring Koreans for their young age and talent you should at least mention the Czechs as well

Mrazkova & Mrazek are a terrific team, and we also love Taschlerova & Taschler but didn't touch on them either. (We talked about both in our preview episode, though.) The choice to include Lim & Quan just comes from us being huge fans of theirs; they're the team that has us the most excited for the future of ice dance. He probably will also be picked for the team event in 2026. I say this because USA. figure skating needs Jason for three spots for 2025 and the Olympic season. Well, I saw everything!! I told you to expect the unexpected and I expect the Americans to medal!!! We received Three medals: two golds and one silver and placed in the top 10 except for pairs who ended after the top 10 but after 10th: I said that I never counted out the Canadians! I was right with 1st Canadian pair, but wrong for 2nd place and 3rd place: but I did mention Germany placed, and 2nd place Japan in pairs: I knew Ilia Mallanin would win, Japan 2nd and 3rd France so I was right there!!!! Yuma knew that he won like he did in 4 Continents Championships and gave an impressive short program and free program but I didn't agree with the score for short program nor short program for either Uno nor Ilia Mallanin or Jason Brown nor the Israel skater or others who skated a flawless program; Uno ended in fourth place and Jason Brown is a veteran and performed consistently without quads and I expect Jason Brown to be in the top 10!!!! Denis, Jason and The Israel skater skated without quads and their technical skills blended with the composition skills; Ice Dance Skaters, I was right on that too: 1st United States of America 2nd Canadian 3rd Italian; all the veterans, and I am glad that the American team ended in the top 10: unfortunately, American ice dance skaters had fallen and could not execute their free program; and for the women: I was only right with the American in 2nd place, but I thought 🤔 that Belgium and Korean skaters would be on the podium, but I was impressed with Kario S of Japan from 4th place to 1st and that was outstanding, but upset was Leona H. and Lee's performance in the free program that took them out of the podium and at least Amber Glenn ended up in the top 10 over all; but I was hoping that Camden Pulkenin would have ended up in the top 10 but unfortunately his inconsistency affected him and put too many points on the ice and ended in 20th place in the free program, and thank you for sharing your podcast and insight!!! Boston, USA is next for Worlds!!! I love Karol for her sportsmanship when she gave Isabeau Levito her American flag and I admire Uno Shoma for his sportsmanship like Jason Brown!!!! ❤❤❤😊😊😊

    Adam was amazing, but Shoma's failed free skate is a big reason why Adam got the bronze. I figured Adam would be in 4th after the event if the top three skated well. I was thrilled to see Adam win the bronze, coming from so far back. I had been hoping Adam would win before the event. But with tough competition, placements are always unpredictable. Shoma is hard to read, but it doesn't seem like he's personally motivated to come back and give it his all for himself. As Shoma has said, he's motivated by his coach's belief in him, not so much fierce personal ambition. It is a question, too, how much Japan fed wants Shoma to come back with all the great men they have eager to compete at the majors. It's a given that ISU judges have always loved Shoma, even with mistakes. But he had too many mistakes in the fp vs Adam's brilliant free skate. Kao Miura put too much pressure on himself. I enjoy Shun Sato better than Miura. IMO, Miura is constantly overscored on PCS. I think Alexander Selevko should have been given higher PCS to at least make 10th over messy Miura and/ or subpar Jun Hwan Cha. Selevko needed a 10th placement to gain two spots for Estonia! 😢 Placing 11th overall, Selevko will NOT be joined by his brother next year, guys.

      @@christinethorp3684 The damage to the ice is worthwhile consideration (though there are several other maneuvers, even some vary basic ones, that I wonder might leave some pretty big ruts). And flipping while the sweepers are on the ice is very dangerous. Agreed that -2 for a banned element probably isn't enough if they truly want to deter it. But we've also seen ice dance teams get dinged with -2 deductions for practically invisible restricted elements, so a larger deduction isn't something we'd want to see applied universally.
      We don't really see it as disrespect, though. Most sports experience people who push the boundaries and the rules, and the successful ones often change the sport in their wake. Gymnastics, being the sport we see having the biggest parallels to skating, is in a constant tug of war between what its athletes are capable of, and what the governing body wants to allow, score properly, or forbid.
