  • Trying out different configurations using my Etowah 8x10 silnylon tarp and Sea to Summit Nano mosquito net. I’m out at Skiles Test Park, one of my favorite Indy Parks!

Tarping in Australia means mozzie nets! I tend to use the DD XL tarp (folded to give a groundsheet too) I believe my net is bigger than yours but if you push a small pebble from inside your net, against the tarp to create a ‘lump’ in the tarp, then wind some cord around the ‘lump’ to lock it in place, it holds up a part of your net that doesn’t necessarily have a manufacturers tie-out point. Repeat the process as much as required to stop net-sag. If your tarp is high you can use the same process to create long ‘tie-outs’ on the net and ‘anchor lumps, on the tarp - or other way around if you prefer. (I use my 2-part kayak paddle to hold out the sides to the bottom edge and add weight to it).

in a pinch you can use the bug net without hanging it, just let it drop on you. Still better than nothing. cheers from so ca

if the ridge line were running underneath the full length of the tarp, that lets you hoist the mosquito net up anywhere you want it with prusik knot bank line, pull the top of the net up between the ridge line and the tarp or even have the net tugged up at two points. Sometimes I am inside the mosquito net and the tarp wishing I had something like 4 magnets to hold it up to the tarp.

Yes, but the tarp can still only be set up as an A-frame which is still pretty limiting. It also must be set up relatively high with poor coverage during storms.

You can try to make some pull point on 4 side of the bug net to pull up and tie it to the inside of the tarp or on the ridgeline so it will make the bug net more roomier for you to stay in:)

Here in the fossil lakebed of Glacial Lake Agassiz (which lays in the earlier and much more vast Glacial Lake Warren lakebed), sleep is impossible without serious insect protection. I can recall some nights where the hum alone of the insects outside the nylon was so loud as to make sleep difficult. Like the noise on the west loop of Chicago, without gunfire....
You need a floor, much more stand-off distance for the net from humans, double seams, and a good mesh that will take a drenching with permethrin. (We have ticks, too.) If you do that, enough room for heating on an alcohol burner insider the net w/b convenient. I do not recommended that. Instead, make sure the entrance to the net enclosure works for reaching outside to manipulate heating utensils.

Worst thing for me when I'm hiking is ticks. A net that cant protect me from ticks aswell as mosquitos isnt for me. Wish it hat an option to attach it to a ground sheet. Maybe a magnet strip or whatever.

I imagine you figured out that in a storm.....the netting just isn't necessary.
