- How to install prefinished hardwood flooring. NOTE: A lot of people have commented that the hardwood floors are going in out of sequence and that electrical, plumbing and sheetrock should be done first. They are correct. However, this is a small cabin on a trailer, and I did it out of sequence on purpose. Also, I didn't even use sheetrock, I used 1/8" paneling for weight concerns. The trailer ended up weighing approx. 10,000lbs when we were done. I do mention this in the video, but not very thoroughly. So please follow this process for new construction projects.
- Framing
-Exterior Sheathing
- Get the roof done (no leaks to ruin your nice new floor)
-Exterior Wall Wrap
- Rough-in electrical and plumbing
- Insulation
- Sheetrock (dyrwall)
- Then flooring
- Install Cabinets
- Install Doors
- Install Trim
- Trim out electrical
- Paint

I bought this nail gun as we were planning to renew all the fencing in our back garden. As this involved 19 double slatted fence panels, 10 of which needed to be cut down in size, we knew there would be a need for a great ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxHQsUrwNr5GQrnx9V4xDdUr56qxwuiBHt deal of re-stapling the wooden slats to the wooden framework. Each alteration required the re-stapling of 62 wooden slats with double staples. Prior to starting the work we ordered sufficient additional staples as per the instructions with the gun.The gun performed fantastically throughout the entire project with no jams of misfires. The adjustable power was excellent allowing the staples to be fired into the 8mm slats to the correct depth. For the price paid this was a bargain and it proved itself to be so reliable and versatile making an arduous task much quicker and professional. I cannot recommend this product highly enough and it will be used on many other projects in the future.

Something to note. The spacing should be done from the wall covering I.E. dry wall not the stud itself. 1/4 inch spacing may not be enough when you have wooden studs. Remember those studs expand too and different woods have different expansion rates/amounts etc. You should also always snap a chalk line to run your first row on and not use the wall since No wall is perfectly straight.
Hi Pprotory, this is good advice. The reason I didn't put down my drywall first was because this was for a tiny cabin on a trailer and I installed 1/8' beadboard paneling to the walls. I did this because I needed something that wouldn't crack during transport. I also needed a lot of spacing between everything so that each surface could move without pushing against the other during transport.

Some people glue the last cut part but nailing them is easier and less messy
Usually, the rubberised part of the mallet strikes the nailer trigger and the metal side of the hammer is angled so as not to damage the board as you tap it home...
Liked the vid... but like the others I would have waited and done plumbing/elec first .... I would have scratched the heck out of that pretty floor doing all that other work!

Don't use the rubber mallet end for tapping the boards. The metal end is angled to not damage the finished wood surface when you tap it.

everything about this video was nicely done and all the information was all correct... But what my question is, why is the dry wall not done? this could completely ruin a hardwood floor if done after....
Hi Max, thanks for the your response and question. this is actually a tiny cabin on a trailer that is now sitting on my property. The reason I didn't put in drywall is because I actually used 1/8" beadboard paneling. I needed something thin and flexible that wouldn't crack during transportation.
I thought that looked like the framing you see In the buildings they sell at Lowe's.
you are suppose to stagga the boards mate, good effort
I have heard from an installer, that the joints on adjacent rows of boards should be staggered at least 6 inches apart.

when I installed my hardwood floors, I had to go to great lengths to get the seams tight. Here, he seems to just tap them in. Is this wood just perfectly straight, why don't you have to use some sort of mechanical advantage to get them snugly into place? Maybe the questions should be, why did I have to? Bad wood, trying too hard (is that a thing?)? Thanks!
What is best, nails or staples? I find staples may break the tongue at times.

Question: A 1/4 inch gap is placed against the wall for expansion. How is this
possible if the panels are nailed to the floor to counter buckling up?
Because wood expands and contracts due to temperature and humidity. Think of a dry sponge getting water. The nail is just there to keep the floor in place during that expansion. With no gap around the perimeter of the floor no amount of nails will keep it from eventually buckling.
I would really like to know the type of hardwood that this is, it is absolutely beautiful. I really like the the color and the size of the boards....

Hi Travis, I bought a 1940's home that under the carpet is 1x4's not tung and grooved together but simply nailed to the floor joist with no plywood under it. Could I use the boards that are already there as my subfloor to install a new hardwood floor or will I have to remove all the old boards and install a subfloor.
Hi Greg, I've been in the construction industry for over 20 years, but I am not an expert on wood floors. However, you would need to take a couple things into consideration. If you don't have a vapor barrier of some sort, the moist air from your crawl space may cause your floor to expand and contract a lot after installation. This would cause it to buckle and then shrink and leave large gaps.
Hi Travis, Thanks for your kind reply. First of all I do not have a crawl space but a full basement and I found out that my pine boards are actually tung and grooved but there is no sub floor. So as long as all the old boards are secured can't I just use the existing floor as my sub floor and just put a vapor barrier between the 2 floors.

Can you rent? The fasteners used are quite different. If you don’t use the correct fasteners, you might experience creaking in the floor over time

Ummmm.... you NEVER hit finished wood with a rubber mallet. I love how everyone is a contractor....you will see it in the finished floor.
Yeah. I usually use a small discarded piece of floorboard as a "mallet piece". Use your mallet to hit that instead and you don't have to worry about breaking the tongue or getting ugly marks on your floor.
Putting a tar saturated paper under natural wood floor is somewhat questionable. I as home owner will never allow that. The home owner should know what is in that tar paper. There are VOC free paper underlayment that meets the NWFA requirements available at no extra cost like the Silicone Vapor Shield by All Globe

obviously, you are not an professional installer,
you don't install starting from the right, you don't rest your stapler gun directly on top of the already installed PREFINISH hardwood flooring, you leave more than 1/4 inch distance from the wood framing(2by4s), you will have drywall and you don't want the drywall installed on top of the flooring, you need adhesive/wood glue for the last 2 rows of planks, the finish nail squeak after a while.
I guess your video is just display as there is no drywall are wiring it's weird looking at a room our shed with hardwood in it I hope you haven't controlled environment it won't last one season
