2002 Ford Thunderbird Review...What Is This?

- 2002 Ford Thunderbird Review featuring the first model year with over 100k miles on it. The Ford Thunderbird is an interesting vehicle that tried to bring 50s charm into the 21st century. Let's see how the Thunderbird aged. See my Honda S2000 Review here: • WATCH THIS 2003 Honda ...
The 11th generation Thunderbird was produced from 2002 to 2005. The later model years produced a bit more horsepower, but I would like to hear your comments below. Do you believe Ford or Lincoln should try to bring back a flagship luxury coupe today? Even if they did try, I'm sure it would have some EcoBoost V6 in it.

Just purchased this little classic retro I've been looking at for a while and I love it. I understand the professional critique paired against it's original rivals in the luxury sports category. I look at this car as a unique sports car that is reminiscent of a fun bygone era.
Nice review. As an owner of a 2003 Thunderbird I purchased new in 2003 I find your review spot on. Car could use more power. I traded out of a 96 cobra and yes the 3.9 motor is no 4.6 for sure! Otherwise beware of leaky valve covers and coil packs issues. 2002 and 2003 and some early 2004 models had a factory defect. Ford covered repairs for 10 years and 100k miles for original owners. My car was fixed under this customer satisfaction program. I have mine in the shop right now for repairs to the gauge cluster apparently there is a short circuit in it which has caused the tilt telescoping steering wheel to not function. As an owner of this car for nearly 20 years I can say it is not trouble free few cars are free of defects. Is at a great car? No but it is a solid riding smooth cruiser and is very luxurious and fun to drive. It doesn't beat up the driver like some new cars. The seats are stuffed and comfortable. A several hour drive to the beach is enjoyable road noise is low even with the top down. Would I prefer a new mustang GT convertible to my T Bird ? Not really they ride rough and cost a fortune for insurance. My buddy just picked up a one owner 2002 Turquoise Blue T Bird with 32000 miles for a mere 20 grand. Stunning car for a weekend or summer driver. My 2003 has only 24000 miles can't wait to get it out of the shop as the gauge cluster has a short circuit and is being sent out for rebuild. I am a Ford guy so obviously biased here. My other rides are a 2010 GT500 finished in grabber blue with white stripes. I just purchased a 2022 Ford Ranger XLT FX4 in Cyber Orange with splash package. By far my Torch Red 2003 Tbird is the most comfortable of all my vehicles.
Orange. My T Bird is Torch Red with hard to and partial accent package.
Pretty fair and accurate review I would say especially considering that you are not a fan of the car.
One big exception: I would argue that 90% of people that watch car reviews are people that are interested in possibly buying that particular car. And I think most people would agree with my assessment of viewers.
Great review Kevin! I actually learned a lot because like you I never really paid much attention to them before or knew much about them. Love what you said at the end about all that matters is your own happiness, darn right, couldn’t agree more!
For sure my friend the happiness of the individual is what's most important!
I own a 2002. Triple black - body, hardtop and interior. Currently at 20,000 miles. It’s now 20 years old with no problems. True, there are problems with the car- others here have testified - but what manufacturer hasn’t had a recall at some time or another in its history. It’s a machine, machines wear out at one time or another. Every car will somewhere in the future.
By this age in my life, I’ve owned a number of vehicles. Some good, some not so much. I’ve been driving longer than some of you here have been alive and I’ll say this : take care of it and it will take care of you. Drive it like you stole it and it will begin to wear down faster than you thought. Again it’s a machine - maintain it and it will last.
Wow a real OG again Kevin. I remember when this came out vs the late 80s early 90s version.
Thanks for the memory lane brah and the vanilla ice track on the radio.
Haha yea this was a fun one I've always wanted to try one of these
Remember ,this review is on a car that's nearly 20 yrs old...I think it's gorgeous.
I've purchased a 05 T-Bird, silver and black! I'm the second owner of the car and only drive it when the weather permits me to drop the to and place the cover on it! Yes, it's a cruiser, not a cornering car! Nice long summer drives to and from! The top down, it'll turn heads! My ride has over 30,000 miles, and I can't wait to drop the top when the weather breaks! Also, the T-Bird out sold the Corvette 23-1!
Why was that note even in there 😆, great video as always and good message for ppl to remember at the end there it's something a lot of people forget
Bought one of these last February at 22, gave her plenty of upgrades and nothing but love for about a year and a half before selling her to a good responsible 4th owner in order to finance buying a 1957 one in the same red color. I adored my 2003 Thunderbird but it just left me wanting more, and the depreciating classic car market intends to deliver.
Great look at this older classic, It's certainly a car I've never seen which is why I like your channel always get something different. As a LC and a RX owner I think the more you boast about them the less your liked so I'm happy to see them on car reviews I do like to see more of the older classics like this as you guys are the King of classics. Thanks for our great work.
Appreciate that my friend yea I try my best to get some of these unique old cars that I was always curious about as a kid
Nice review. I dont own it. But love the old school style.
I have one exactly like that same year. Accept mine has less mileage than that under 90,000 miles not even 80,000. It runs smooth and nice.👍🏽👏🏽👌🏽🤙🏾🤘🏾💪🏽🙏🏽🙋🏽♂️😎.
Had one of those diecast models you assemble yourself of one of these as a kid. Never knew much about these cars otherwise till now. I always thought they were Mustang-based rather than related to the LS until now. Great review!
Yea my friend I didn't know much about it either til I started researching the car it's interesting for sure
Hey tell Carey imports I'll take it as a gift for me being such a nice guy 🤣😂🤣
I think they should give it to you as well and they could say they paid it forward👍
I think they should pay you a bit to take it. Registration fees at minimum.

My mom had one of these after many years of mustang GTs... She liked it. Im an Accord guy but i just got rid of my 17 optima because it is a oil burning bomb. Bought a 12 camry after your great review and Scotty Kilmers voice haunting my dreams. Im very happy with it! Thinking of grabbing a Solara too. Would love to see a Solara review from you first though. Love your genuine reviews.
Massive congrats on your new Camry, sorry to hear your Optima had oil issues. Yea the Solara was a vehicle I've always wanted to review because it was supposed to be my first car but I ended up with a 2010 Acura TSX. Always had a soft spot for the Solara tho
That's bad to have trouble with a car 🚗 of that model burning oil.. I have heard that some of those models are bad for that but they keep it under wraps and on the down low. Camry,'s and Accords are two great cars to own if you want great reliability and reliable transportation. I bought a new Camry XLE several months back and I'm very happy with it it is in Wind Chill Pearl White . It gets 48.2 miles per gallon on the highway and it's not a hybrid.
@@charlesjackson1700 ive had Accords. First Camry. And will never own a Hyundai/Kia ever again
@@issavibez394 maybe so but Toyota will tell you how to fix it unlike Kia who tells me i need a new engine but yet its not blown
@@charlesjackson1700 i actually made out like a bandit. I bought the Kia for 14k during covid. Just got a 3k check for some hail damage and sold it to a major car company for 11k. If you do the math i got every penny back. Ahh... One for the good guys. Bought a 12 Camry with only 40k for 13k
OMG Truly laughing out loud at the first minute of your video I’ll send this comment now and then finish watching!
😅😂
Lmfaoooo sameeee "I don't hate this car I never hated this car."
Mmhmm.
I would like to say that there's actually a third category of people that watch these videos. People who watch for educational purposes people who would like to see an unbiased and objective review of a vehicle interior exterior and mechanical. Obviously not for entertainment purposes or pure vanity.
very special car for special customer.
You got that right
Fair review.12.8 k for this car at 109k miles is about right for the present time.spend the money and look for one with less miles.around 40-50k.hes testing a 20 yr old car with alot of miles on it.keep this in mind
I have one that I bought new in 2004. I do like it very much, but those Jaguar mechanicals have been a bit of an issue. I do have to disagree with your comment that these are for people who don't know the Corvette exists. I liked the contemporary Corvette but could not find a comfortable position in it. I had no trouble finding a comfortable driving position in this. I agree that it was targeted toward the Lexus/Mercedes 2 seater market at half the price. If the dealers hadn't been so excessive with markups (up to $30k in South Florida!), and if Ford had advertised it more, I think it would have sold better.
9:04 AHAHAHA! true that! I own a yellow 2004 Thunderbird with 60k miles, love that car to death man, my girl loves it too and honestly it's an eye catcher car
That car has the kind of infotainment system I prefer nice and easy 🤣😂🤣 no manual needed
Yup lol my favorite sort of Infotainment
Those Bose speakers still kick ass.most of those 6 disc changers didn't hold up though.never put 6 discs in a 6 disc changer I learned lol
I’d say 280 horsepower is pretty respectable considering the 1997 Thunderbird V8 only made 205 Horsepower
This is the second video I have see were the claim is that the car does not handle well. As it was mentioned it is on a Lincoln Ls frame. I still have my 02 Lincoln LS with 118K that I bought in 02. One of the biggest selling points was the 50/50 weight distribution. Unless they changed something or did not include something that the LS has and the T-bird does not I would have to strongly disagree. Mine handles extremely well. I like to drive mine in the country sometimes were there are a lot of tight curves going around farm land and I can clear them at a high rate of speed "45-70+" and it takes the curve as it was not even there. I am thinking of getting one of these.
Had a lot of seat time in an 03 LS and it had a really nice balance between ride comfort and handling. It was graced with a very expensive platform. I remember reading reviews of the T-Bird that mentioned turning the LS platform into a convertible took out a lot of rigidity from the platform, might be why it doesn't reach the level of the Jag or LS. Pretty sure the T-Bird has softer springs too.
Chrome rims, hell yeah that's what's up. Haven't seen any of them on the roads in a while
Probably because they're in the junkyard lol
I saw a cheap one the other day. I had no idea these were 8's.
Hahahahha the title is perfect 👌🏾!
I believe he showed a heat seat control....this was not available on a 2002tbird
Correct
Did this car kick off the retro styling trend we saw in the mustang and later dodge products?
Idk what this thing kicked off 😅 I kind of just want to kick the car tbh
@@MeynMotorGroup 😂😂
I think the Mustang kicked off the Retro for everybody Chrysler Chevy Ford.
Mustang, T-bird Ford, GT. And then they also had internet commercial teasers showing glimpses of what look like a new version of the Carl Shelby cobra but it never actually went into production.
Maybe I am confused, I am of the opinion that safety glass is considered double pane? Dont manufacturers have to use safety glass?
👍👍👍

Hey bro can't wait to hear what you have to say about this one 😅

Kevin, I know variety is the spice of life and all....but that version of the Thunderbird was a miss by Ford, not so much a shitbox, but just a half ass effort to compete with cars that it just really did not. Like the new Bronco, with all the time they had to develop, and people chomping at the bits.......and they kick out a Nissan Xterra type of thing. I'm watching em all, but I remember people buying them "gonna be a collectible brother you'll see", they took a bath, to each their own but when Ford brings back a "classic", with exception of the GT, they to me, miss the mark.
Yea that's the problem I have with Ford everything they do is just so half assed and I know they can make something great, they've done a phenomenal job with things like the Shelby GT 350 and GT 500 but they just don't want to invest the money and truly become great with their other products. Lincolns are promising but nobody wants them
I love this era of weird shit. Prowlers, PT cruisers, thunderbirds, etc. Too bad this will literally never happen again with the amount of market research these companies have to make sure they don't manufacture flops like this 😂
Yea they will never make another abomination like this again. They don't need to experiment like this because now they know the answer is SUV lol
I wanted a 1994 V-8 Thunderbird so badly. I was a misguided youth.
It's ok 😅 growing up I had strange admiration for the Dodge Intrepid
@@MeynMotorGroup 🤣😂🤣
Supercharged!
An owner of this would definitely have to be a Ford history buff or someone that got it cause PawPaw had one after The War... I knew a lady with one. She'd wear the cat rimmed glasses, gloves, and long scarf. She was kinda famous so it was just a prop to her. 🤣🤣🤣
Very interesting 😅 but yes I def agree it would have to be a Ford enthusiast that owns this for sure or someone that just likes the looks of it
I want it .. idk why I own 7 cars might buy this for my gf …she’s Asian and drive a. 2016 Lexus ES
Ford should have used the 03 Mustang Cobra engine in this car and kept the automatic transmission. The handling would have stayed the same but the fun seniors who bought these would have wasting young punks at red lights and on ramps would have helped the sales. Why in the world did they go the problematic Jaguar engine when they had something in-house? Just because they owned Jaguar at the time did not make this a good decision.
Ford had no V8 that would fit.
All modern autos have double pane glass!
Absolutely not non of the crappy compact cars do double pane glass is reserved for the Luxury cars and some companies like Mazda use it
Hey Kevin, interesting car to review. The base 36K model were virtually non-existent at the time, most because buyers wrongly assumed they would eventually be a collector's car sold over 50K - Bottom line, it was the classic "parts bin" car. Entire dash, doors and vents were from the 2000-2006 Taurus/Sable vehicles. Unfortunately, not worth the money then and not worth the money now 20 years later. Hope This Helps Yo ! 🔜 🙊 🙉 🙈
Yea and there was a Neiman Marcus edition about 200 of them and they all sold out immediately and some sold over sticker at the time but you're def right not worth it lol
You are so off base the door panels are original to the car the dash is from the Lincoln ls
That car was so so slow 15 second 1/4, V6 Accords were running those times back then.
15 back then was OK but yea plenty of V6s back then with almost the same power output but this was a V8 so it sounded better kind of like how today's NA V8s are better than the twin turbo crap
The car was not a sports car it was intended to be a cruiser
All I got from your review is. You don't like it. You act like you're driving. A brand new high end sports car. But your driving a 20 year old car. That has 109,000 miles on it.
Was as I supposed to like it?
Do you know? Do you?
I'm still trying to find the answer

Underneath the skin, it's a Jaguar.
Would you 🙄trade your 2007 Lexus even ...for that Thunderbird?,🤔
Oh absolutely in a heart beat 😅😂
@@MeynMotorGroup Yeah,😉 ...
I will always love this car because when I was a firefighter we responded to an alarm for a car vs telephone pole when we got on scene there was a beautiful blond who crashed into a pole but played dead like a possum to hide her face she took her top off and put it over her head so nobody could identify her. She sat topless in a convertible playing dead because it turns out she snuck the car out of her dad's garage to joy ride. She wasn't injured more like humiliated or embarrassed but the car help up considering she hit the telephone pole at a high speed without hitting the breaks
Now that is a crazy story 😅 such a strange thing to do in a strange car but alright. Appreciate you stopping by sir and always look forward to the next story you share!
@@MeynMotorGroup I gotta watch what I say I could get myself into trouble 🤣😂🤣 I'd have to give a trigger warning before I talk about the crazy things I've dealt with in NYC
I feel sorry for anyone who defends this car, just buy a damn Lincoln ls

Roast, why would you start off a honest review if you weren’t going to roast it?
The design of this car screams boomer
Absolutely
Another Ford failed!!!
Shhhh the Thunderbird owners club might hear you
That is for sure... it was a dog.. It had poor reliability as well as transmission failure.. they were bad about overheating. I would advise anyone to avoid it 😜
