** if you don’t want to use shortening you can replace it with vegetable shortening, instead of 3 tbsp you would use 6 or canola oil ****
    Ingredients makes about 16 tortillas
    4 cups flour
    3 tbsp vegetable shortening
    3 tbsp lard
    salt ( I used 2 tsp )
    1 1/2 tsp baking powder
    1 1/2 cups warm water

My ex Mother in Law was from Mexico who taught me a lot about Mexican food and cooking it. Our times in the kitchen were memories that will remain in my heart ❤️ a lifetime. When learning to make tortillas she would laugh and say I I I NO you’re making them look like states, see that looks like Oklahoma. Her accent was priceless. I still have yet to conquer tortillas BUT after watching your video I’m going to attempt it again. This white girl can cook so if I can make them like you I’m going to go outside and scream like a real mariachi lol 😂 I make enchiladas from scratch, beans, rice, homemade salsa, Carnitas and much more. So, I’ll let ya know how they turn out. I hope she’ll be looking down from heaven beaming with PRIDE... Thank you 🙏 for sharing your videos and bringing such fond memories of Mom Morales.

We just made these for the 3rd time. Kids and adults alike love them. Other recipes always left me upset that for all the effort they were still crunchy and unflexible. The primary difference? You use Baking Powder and others call for baking soda! I use oil as lard and shortening aren't common in our house, but it worked great! And today we are using butter flavored shortening and coconut oil, as after the holidays it is here. Next time I will try with left over fast from bacon. Just have to try! Thanks!! Mama of 5 good eaters!

I can tell you mastered your technique of rolling the harina to perfection. Not many Mexican-American Latinas now how to make make flour tortillas. My two sisters are fantastic cooks, neither all my ex-xes in Texas know how to make flour tortillas. I am so glad you too the time to demonstrate how to efficiently make tortillas like my Mom and Grandma used to make them. God Bless you for keeping the tradition alive and well. Arturo

I don't usually comment unless I am very happy with the outcome. I followed Claudia's recipe and instructions to make tortillas. The tortillas turned out to be soft, tasty and was easy to make. I followed another video from a different channel, the recipe was time consuming and difficult. I gave up on making tortillas after that so bought the readymade ones from the store. I wanted to give another shot at making homemade tortillas and I am so glad I followed Claudia's recipe.

    Thanks for your video!
I have been making homemade flour tortillas for over 35 years. For the last 10 years I have been using my food processor to mix the dough and knead it. It cuts the time in half when preparing tortillas. They turn out beautifully! If you have a food processor and don’t mind veering from the traditional method, use it! As my hands get older and more tired and stiff, this has become my preferred method.
Also, if you don’t have a rolling pin, you can buy a 1-2 inch dowel at the hardware store. They will cut it to your desired length. I find a dowel works better than a traditional rolling pin. In fact, my first rolling pin ages ago was the end of a broom handle I whacked off with a serrated knife and peeled the paint off, sanded it and I was ready to go. My first tortillas turned out crazy bad. It took me about a year to perfect them. Now I’m a self-proclaimed pro!😎

Your skills are very very good. My mom always made flour tortillas and we own a tortilla company. The texture of your tortillas look incredible. If you do want that toasted look I would add half the amount of sugar that you added in salt. it also gives a great flavor as well.

LOVE this video! Your kiddo is so adorable too. God bless your family and THANK YOU for teaching us how to make homemade tortillas. My mom knew how to make them but she didn't ever measure anything so I never got her recipes. She passed in 2006 from cancer and she took all her delicious recipes with her.

You forgot the best part of that tortilla....
THE BUTTER. My grandmother made fresh tortillas she would put butter on them when we were waiting to get one. Soooo good. I'm going to learn how to make them. Thanks for the lesson

Thank you very much! I’ve been trying and failing to make soft homemade flour tortillas for 3 years now and this is the only video/recipe that has the right portion of baking powder/lard/shortening and water!! My friends kept saying I have a hot hand but mine came out perfect. Thank you

Golf ball size? Those are big golf balls! 😉. Seriously though, you handle the dough like a pro. Very impressive. Better than a lot of professional bakers / pastry chefs.

Although mi Gramita always used lard back in the day. I’ve made her tortillas with coconut oil, grape seed oil, corn/vegetable/canola oil in place of the lard/shortening, over the years, guess what? Still deliriously delicioso!! The key is *never* over knead nor over flour the masa, and *DO* most definitely let it rest for 30 minutes or more before rolling out, etc. Makes a huge difference, you’ll see. :)

Thank you for sharing! I’ve tried many tortilla recipes but am yet to find the best one. Gonna try these in the morning ☺️ Oh and for anyone who makes “too many” you can always freeze them! Either raw (as long as you defrost properly, you won’t have any issues peeling them apart) or cooked and they’ll keep for about a month or more. Can’t wait to make them 😊😊😊

Yes. I shop at Aldi's and for a year I could get 5lbs of ground hamburger meat for around $12.70 -$14... Now since covid, the Same package is $19-$21! And there's a limit of 2 packages of each kind of meat per customer also

Claudia, I appreciate so much that you just get right to the ingredients and instructions, thank you! Two hints for you, at Dollar Tree buy the "spongy" feeling shelf cover, not the paper one, and cut a piece to put under your glass bowls, they won't slide, (I also you a piece to twist off jar lids). Buy shower caps to fit over a bowl instead of using plastic wrap or foil..it's great, saves $, also at Dollar Tree. Thanks again for taking your time to do this video. Can't wait to make it! :)
