- On our way back home from the Sturgis SD rally we made a couple stops, one was in Clear Lake Iowa to visit the Surf Ballroom and Museum.
Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper last performed here and lost their lives in a plane crash not far from the airport in a corn field, and also the pilot.
I was born in 1958 on Buddy Holly's Birthday and named Peggy Sue after one of his popular songs. I wonder if my mother knew I was born on his Birthday, she never mentioned it to me.
So Buddy and his song has a special place in my heart. ❤️

The first great tragedy of music occurred in a day like today. It is even said that you can heard music faintly in the ballroom and in the middle of the night the sound of a plane can be heard in the site every anniversary of the crash.

I have been to the Surf 9 times, twice for a walk through tour and 7 times for the Winter Dance Party. That yearly event started in 1979, before the Gary Busey movie. The phone is in the lobby, glassed off. The thing that was wrong in the movie was it was shown as if it was backstage. Maria Elena said that Buddy called her.
The performance at the Surf was on my mother’s 40th birthday. I didn’t realize that until I went to the WDP in 2015. I went every year from 2014 through 2020. In spite of snow/ice/cold, buses take the attendees to the crash site.
Maggie thank you so much for giving me all this information. That is so interesting. I would love to go to the dance party someday. But the weather there concerns me.

I went to the WDP every year from 2014 through 2020, and there was a large contingent from the UK that had been coming every year for decades.

On the flip side of the story would if after that conversation between Buddy & Whalen it was the bus that broke down & Whalen with the artist on the bus had froze to death, then Buddy would have been alive & felt his words haunted him. That moment shows us that the smallest comments we make or actions we do can have a life changing affect # Rip Buddy, Richie, the Big Bopper & their pilot.

Oh my goodness I've been wondering the same thing. This movie would have to be filmed at the Surf Ballroom! I think Dan Achroid in the 80s could pull it off.
I will never know why these musicians and band members were not accommodated in hotels or something suitable, instead of broken down school buses, considering the extreme cold temperatures and weather.
Another impossible thing to believe is how that flight was allowed to take place. The weather conditions were atrocious and suicidal, the pilot was young and not qualified to fly that plane based on his lack of instrumentation knowledge, and it was at five to one in the morning. It was a plane crash that was definitely going to happen, and Jerry Dwyer, the owner of the plane and airport manager was the main culprit responsible for this air disaster.

Ever since the Gary Busey movie, the Surf has been capitalizing on this event big time!! Good for them. However, before the movIe they had all but forgotten Buddy Holly let alone the other two. If you go there, know that not all of the story that has become the narrative is true. Not a big deal, but still, this a giant tourist trap.
