Had an almost identical crash here in the UK in May. Thank goodness a car wasn’t coming the other way when your friend slid across the other lane. Glad he’s OK, hope he’s recovering well. I broke my ankle and was badly bruised, my Ducati Hypermotard totalled. Watching this video brings it all back. The sudden unavoidability of it. It was like hitting a brick wall, thought I was going to die as I rag dolled down the road.
Full good quality gear including an air bag vest (I urge everyone to get one if you can afford it) saved my life. You articulated so well the lessons I have learned upon reflection. ATGATT, slow down in risky areas and times, heightened awareness etc. I don’t think I’ll ever take a seemingly clear road for granted again.

Thanks for sharing your experience. We’re glad your okay. Situations like this really wake you up. We’re getting into deer rut season so we’re on hyper alert now. Full gear and slowing the pace down are also in season.

Very similar here. Hit deer head on on my 16' Tuono at about 60mph. I was pretty lucky as well ,only a small avulsion fracture on foot. Bike totalled Deer totalled .Good gear, over the ankle boots w/ ankle support and full face helmet saved me from serious injuries. And yes, there just is NO substitute for leather or at least high quality textile gear ,both with armor, in a moto crash. Quality helmet also a must. Insurance paid and picked up a 17' Tuono . Must say tho,I still think about it at times while riding and slow down. Agree with you about being sensible in picking your spots as to when to go fast and when not to,track days work for me. Great video

Hit one on my 1300 was doing about 115 broke my ankle in multiple spots..fractured kneecap. broke my wrist in 3 spots multiple fractures and severe soft tissue damage. Head trauma and my neck was soooo sore.
I got lucky I was also wearing high end gear.
Had an Arai helmet, a segur neck guard THANK GOD... and a full one piece leather suit from alpine star..
Alpine v2 shoes.. and full leather gauntlets.. Everything happened so fast. I don't remember a lot. But I had a guy in a car behind me that's said I split the deer so perfectly He drove through the blood cloud, but never heard or fell to single bump from running over anything... The only part of anything hitting his car was my.
Helmet visor.. he said my leg hit the bars and I did a flip and hit headfirst. Had I not had the helmet and neck protector.... well.
And my leathers were DESTROYED. ..
For those that have an experienced this, Imagine dragging your body At high speed Across sandpaper... That leather saved my ass..LITERALLY.
When u get up at that kind of speed after a slide if the weather's right u can see steam coming from your leather.. I had heat rash.

I stopped a Kangaroo from taking me out at 110ks by having quick enough reflexes to kick his head just before impact & i was able to stay upright, I fractured or broke my foot, small injury compared to loosing my life if he got between the front wheel & motor.

yeah, and if you are going 100 mph, get knocked or thrown off your bike, and YOU hit something, like a phone pole, the support on a guard rail or sign, or any solid object

Just over 2 years ago, I hit a deer at about 50 mph. The bike and I somersaulted over the deer and parted ways in midair. Two broken metatarsals, 4 broken ribs, a shattered scapula, and a lacerated liver. 5 days in the hospital. Snell rated HJC full-face helmet... toast. Alpinstar jacket & pants.... toast. Tourmaster boots... toast. Held gloves... toast. Doc said if i hadn't been dressed like that, I would have died.

Thank you for the video. I had the misfortune of hitting a moose at around 80kmh (around 50mph). I flew over the handlebars in a very similar fashion as your friend, but just like him my gear saved me. Please use a full face helmet and wear good quality gear with knee, elbow, shoulder and back protectors. I need some time to get my bike fixed, but I will also get an airbag vest once I get back on the road. The gear we have these days is amazing and feeling hot is a small price to pay for walking away from a crash.

    Excellent video thank you.
I struck a deer while riding to work at 5:00 AM on October 20, 2021, outside of Medina New York. I hit the deer at about 50 miles per hour and I never seen it because a truck was driving towards me with their Highbeams on.
Luckily I was wearing a full face helmet, riding jeans with chaps and a heavy armored coat with leather gloves and riding boots. I was thrown from the bike my head struck along with my hands , then my back then I did a few somersaults. My injuries included a broken left wrist several broken fingers in each hand a sprained right wrist and several broken bones in each hand. I didn’t have a scratch on my body the protective gear saved my life. I still ride today put no longer in the early mornings or at night. My hands will never be 100% but I have about 80% back. Mentally, I’m ok but I have struggled with the fear of a deer running out into the road.
I believe your video can help save someone’s life because when riding your life can change in the blink of an eye.

Speed kills, measure your risks, and PLEASE wear all gear. Im a Harley rider, I live in Bakersfield CA, 100+ degrees almost every day in the summer, i still wear a full face helmet. If you want to wear less armor thats your choice, we all get to take our own risks, but in the end the risks can catch up more often than not.

Sobering thoughts. If you're relying on luck to keep you safe, one day you may pay 'deerly'. And you're right, we all probably take risks. That's half the fun. Even so, being properly prepared with the right kind of gear to meet the dark side of that risk is far far better than blithely thinking you're invincible. Thanks for a great video. I'm glad your friend is recovering. Live to ride again.

I hit a deer at 60 on my 99 fatboy. Up over the bars I went no helmet only a tee shirt jeans and steel toe boots. A cop was right behind me he thought he was going to watch me die. When I came down head first with my hand out like superman. I tucked my head as much as I could. I scraped the blacktop with my forehead just enough to give me a little scratch not even enough to bleed. Before my first roll I got both hands locked behind my head. Just instinct from being a kid crashing on bikes and mini bikes. Or anything else where You need to protect your head. After about 60 yards I came to a stop on my knees. Elbows pouring blood that was it though other than my hand from first contact. And a sprained ankle because of the weight of my steel toes. It seemed like I was in the air for an hour. The amount of thoughts that run through your head in that split second is unbelievable. I'd say the scariest part was listening to my bike skidding across the ground thinking it's going to run me the f over. I rebuilt that bike and was very hesitant to go out of the garage. Always scan the ditches for any type of animals . That's all I do it seems like and it kinda took the pleasure out of riding a bit. Because i don't get to see the sights anymore.
