Once again a mysteriously started fire served it's purpose perfectly - to render the building only fit for demolition and clearance and ultimately to make way for new flats to be built on the land.
Burgess Hill has the most criminally corrupt planners in the country which is why it has been the officially fastest growing town for about sixty years.
obviously the fire crews know better but to the untrained eye it looks like they are shooting a ton of water over the roof to little effect. I was wondering why didn't they tear the window barriers off and shoot the water at the source of the flame
No, I think you have about summed up the situation, very little water was aimed at the seat of the fire & instead, sprayed through the flames. I was trapped in a nighttime pub fire back in 1975, older building than this one & in a village with poor water supply, myself, my family & even the two dogs were all rescued & the building saved, it’s still there today, Station, South Nutfield. Same fire today, I would wager that I would be dead along with my family & the large three storey building would have burned to the ground.
And the next week the known arsonists submitted another planning application which was duly rubber-stamped by the Bug's Hole Mafia Planning Department.
We use 70mm hose, but the 45mm (used in Vid) is easier to drag around, in this incident (while I'm not part of this counties fire service, so I could be wrong) We don't enter buildings on fire if there is no one at any potential risk, due to unnecessary risk to personnel, however If they were to enter, they would use a hose reel which is 20mm odd (varies by make) which is ideal as it is used at high pressures.
most of these structures probably built after wwII. so there tactics are quite different. an if it's a small town they won't have the resources for a ladder truck
Cool, thanks for the info! That makes perfect sense with the hydrants being that way, I bet you guys are pretty damn crafty with water supplies and shuttle/relay operations! Thanks again for your response, so cool learning how it's done elsewhere. Hopefully one of these days I can see your country and maybe do a ride-a-long too!
Hey, by lines i assume you mean hoses? We normally start from the appliance with 75mm hoses then end them in 45mm hoses as they're easier to handle and help increase the pressure. at 1:00 you can see both hose diameters. The diameter of water mains varies alot depending on location/age etc, but the valves etc on them are all the same so we can have water straight from the hydrant into the pump whatever the diameter. Stay safe :)
at least when we pull up we get hoses onto the fire straight away instead of pissing about looking around and pulling knots of hoses everywhere. Most us videos show them spending 5 mins walking around instead of putting water on the fire...
+Tom Z Seems like an abandoned building judging by the boarded up windows. Ergo, it is safe to assume that nobody was inside (unless there was a squatter in there). Honestly, it was a derelict pub. Not really tragic if an abandoned building goes down. It would make way for other buildings (e.g. apartment blocks). Otherwise it is a waste of space.
Hi, there are no restrictions on use of larger hose at incidents in the uk. Alongside the highpressure hose reels appliances carry 45mm and 70mm diameter. Use of 45mm is usually for ease of mobility, particularly with limited numbers of firefighters at the incident.
The first shot of the ALP (areial Ladder Platform) is at 9 mins 41 seconds. It is actually missed off the incident report I put at the start of the video, but it was there. In West Sussex there ae 2 ALP's - one based in Worthing one in Horsham. Both 30 mins away from the area of this iincident.
Correction. sub officer is watch manger A, Station officer watch manager B, Leading firefighter crew manager and Assistant divisional officer which is now station manager. Sadly the old ranks have gone.
The only other fire here I know of was the night before - which was another arson attack. The building had recently been declined for planning permission to turn the area into flats, I believe. That attempt was early evening with people about so it was soon spotted, This one was I think 4 - 5am, so not many people around, so it got a hold quickly.
I mean this with total respect for my Bros across the pond, is your usage of larger lines like 2 1/2" 63.5mm for operations like this restricted because it's not on your truck or for water management/smaller diameter water mains? I'm very curious and I don't know a lot about UK Tactics..be safe.
Yes, it was arson. Aparently it had just been refused planning permission too. And they tried to set it alight the evening before too, but it was soon seen and put out.
A lot of fire brigades only have role markings on the front part of the helmet now- which makes it harder to tell from the rear if someone's a Firefighter, Crew Manager or Watch Manager.
yes your correct - leading firefighters did the same job as a crew commander took charge of a pump Sub Officers ran a watch but now thats done by a watch commander with a white helmet. but No there is no job with just one stripe
Poor showing of putting out a fire. You can even see the angle they were pointing the hoses to the roof space was completely missing the fire, as the hose at the back ends up shooting water over the front! I know it was a abandoned pub, but at least put some effort in and try to stop the fire instead of pissing about.
It's defensive firefighting if nobody is inside and it's derelict and not going to damage other property which this isn't then you don't need to risk lives and put people in there. You Jose it down and contain it
The funny thing is though, if this exact fire in this exact building, was battled in the US it'd be loaded with Brits telling us how superior they are at firefighting etc. Sorry but there's nothing superior about this, even for a defensive fire. I mean you can see the fire through some of the plywood on the windows yet nobody figured to pull it off so you could put some streams through it and hit the fire.
I think they might have done more help if they all started pissing on the building... Not much you are going to do to stop a fire in an abandoned building though. No reason to risk life if you are not saving life.
Even if this was a practice fire it would be horrible fire fighting. Putting water on smoke and flame? If you really wanted to stop this, you have to remove the second floor window plywood so you can get water on what's burning. Nobody goes in this thing.
+Alan Howard It was just some copyright free music I used. I think form a company called AKM music. I actually think using music was a mistake and I don't put it on now.
Its now residential use along with a new Co-op store. www.google.co.uk/maps/@50.9590536,-0.1229759,3a,66.8y,172.76h,98.82t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1stmqx6F_2btxqJVYANeAhTg!2e0!5s20160701T000000!7i13312!8i6656
@chelseacool100 Good luck to her. It's a shame about the yobs. I'm sure 90% of them just need to be pointed in the right direction and need to believe in themselves ... however their environment is uninspiring and they have no guidance =/ Such a waste.
Apparently not which is amazing considering how superior all the people on American fire videos make the UK fire services out to be. Pretty sure that plywood would have been gone in North America.
If they remove the plywood then the fire is just will just start spewing out the windows. By keeping it there it is more contained. No point risking sending someone up for the sake of a couple wooden boards
The fire is already spewing out the roof, so a little more coming out the windows isn't going to be the end of the world. With the plywood off you'd have access to the fire burning on the upper floors and be able to put water on it. Nobody is saying climb up a ladder and stick your upper body in the window to check the conditions out. If going up to remove a bit of plywood is too risky for them, perhaps they should re-evaluate what they do.
As i said before there is no need to risk someone to remove them. The building is unused and no other buildings are beside that the fire can spread to so no rush in putting it out. They could of removed the boards but there is no real point in doing so. At the end of the day the fire is out job done.
Eddie Howland nah it was in the kitchen mate, I know I'm 2 years late but my dad used to go there with all his mates and the owner said a chef fucked up
@chelseacool100 Pubs should be banned. Young people should be more worried about how they are going to pay off the national debt and simaltaniously look after this generation in it's retirement, as well as manage a trashed environment, instead of having an antisocial drink and a laugh.
This video shames me to the core. The building could have been saved. Follow the simple rule. If its thick and rolling, if its red and glowing, GIVE IT A FUCKING DRINK!!!!!! Basic rule of firefighting?
Straight away like they did in THIS video?? Don't make me laugh. It doesn't matter how fast you pull out your little garden hoses, you're going sit there and watch the building burn down. You need GPM's to overcome the BTU's being produced by the fire, you can't change that. Your full of it with your 5 minute timeline.
meggy3616 soooooo. explain. what exactly could they have done. And I'll ask again what qualifications do you have to question professional experienced firefighters?
Funny how derelict pubs 'magically' and 'spontaneously' burst into flames. Especially if the area is to be redeveloped into housing and such like.
The old public house certainly seemed to be in the way of the development that came afterwards.
obviously the fire crews know better but to the untrained eye it looks like they are shooting a ton of water over the roof to little effect. I was wondering why didn't they tear the window barriers off and shoot the water at the source of the flame

actually the sub officer is the equivalent of the watch manager now the crew manager is the leading hand's equivalent

I hope you're true to your word and no longer add 'muzak' to these types of videos. A very good capture - well done! I love the 'command' Land Rover.
Why is there happy music in the background? Doesn't match the tragedy of a fire. So Wrong!
+Tom Z Seems like an abandoned building judging by the boarded up windows. Ergo, it is safe to assume that nobody was inside (unless there was a squatter in there). Honestly, it was a derelict pub. @@0zzyninja Don't you think Burgess Hill has had enough "other buildings" thanks to its criminally corrupt planners?
MassMurdering Mao why do you keep going around shaming Burgess hill..,,

Gotcha! Thanks for the info! Stay safe out there!
takes me back in 2009 when the 49 Club went on fire the roof clapsed, it was in Trecenydd South Wales.
Correction. sub officer is watch manger A, Station officer watch manager B, Leading firefighter crew manager and Assistant divisional officer which is now station manager.

What's the music all about? It's a pub fire not a Hollywood film!!

At 3:36, there's a SubO with a blue-topped tabard / surcoat. Can anyone tell me his rôle please?
Heli-Crew HGS safety officer
Great Video, won,t be many in the bar, opening time.
another meaning to " Up the Junction" lol
Had a look around for other vids of this and it seems there was a previous fire - during the time of when was in use. Any idea what started that one?
Stayed there a lot late 90s my auntie ran it for a bit good memories
Yes, it was arson. Aparently it had just been refused planning permission too. And they tried to set it alight the evening before too, but it was soon seen and put out.
This looks to me, what I call a "developers' fire."
What is that amazing background music called?
Wasn't this Gerry Ryan's pub?
The "Sub Officer" is a crew commander. I have not noticed any different or old helmet - give me a time - mins and seconds where it can be seen.
A lot of fire brigades only have role markings on the front part of the helmet now- which makes it harder to tell from the rear if someone's a Firefighter, Crew Manager or Watch Manager.
how long did it take put ths out
REALLY? Do you have any more details?
it looks like this building has not been used in years it's all boarded up
and i think some one lit it
yes your correct - leading firefighters did the same job as a crew commander took charge of a pump Sub Officers ran a watch but now thats done by a watch commander with a white helmet. but No there is no job with just one stripe

Kevin De Vulder tru
Hi - As I am just the photographer, I do not know the technical reasons, but I will ask an officer and hopefuly get back to you.
note essential equipment brought into service at 6.50....
I think they might have done more help if they all started pissing on the building... Not much you are going to do to stop a fire in an abandoned building though. No reason to risk life if you are not saving life.
@blumenstrasse30 Have a look at my other fire videos. You may then realise how I get so close........
@Terry Sinclair if you look at my other videos, especially the video titled Code 1 you will see i film with the fire service
Why don't they uprade them? I live in the country here and the minimum size for a water main (where we have them) is 6".
It's just a piece of copyright free library music from a company called AKM music.
oh thanks, good filming. ever considered taking images of police incidents and blue light service ect...
First pub i ever had a drink , 1968
Been looking into it. Isnt that series just about ireland?
Even if this was a practice fire it would be horrible fire fighting. Putting water on smoke and flame? If you really wanted to stop this, you have to remove the second floor window plywood so you can get water on what's burning. Nobody goes in this thing.
i know. Do you know why they got rid of the leading hand?
Great Video. but one question where is the ALP. Or a ARP
Have to say it looks a lot better as a pile of rubble :)
Den Perry did it
It wouldnt have happened if Keith Lard had visited and done a fire safety talk . There's no smoke without fire .
whats with the music? that spoils it for me in a way to be honest
*Gary and tony have left the chat*
WHY the music???? Thumbs down for you for that.
WHY the stupid comment... thumbs down to you for that.
This is where foam trucks come in.
that was my uncle simons pub
This place was a dump tho
I live in Burgess Hill
Heros
water on top
an alp would have it out by now
They got one there as soon as they could. As you can see later in the video.
gay musiic
no problem why have the shite music on it spoils it
what is the music called thats playing throughout this video good music.
+Alan Howard It was just some copyright free music I used. I think form a company called AKM music.
I actually think using music was a mistake and I don't put it on now.
+Eddie Howland hey eddie don't put yourself out m8, its cracking music that's on the video. you done a good job.
He is actually right. The music sucks, and no one wants to hear that on a video like this.
I use to go there
Whats it now?
Its now residential use along with a new Co-op store.

by the way it's watch manager
how did that start!
+Clare Holzapfel Arson
arson by the town planners
How did it go on fire
Arson I believe
Eddie Howland nah it was in the kitchen mate, I know I'm 2 years late but my dad used to go there with all his mates and the owner said a chef fucked up
Mystic Dolphin Yeah the first fire maybe in kitchen the pub was already abandoned and then was torched again by arson
that could of been contained a lot quicker with a hydraulic platform
it was there but came from Horsham so took a while to arrive
+Eddie Howland ahh right fair enough
They may have well just let it burn to the ground.
These guys are using hoses the size that we would use on a car fire. No wonder the fire's not going out.
@chelseacool100

They should have got helicopters to put out the fire as well
Big Fire, Big Water, except there. Pittifull streams. Its not the men's fault, they are just poorley lead
Radner Bearman they have pressure and they use defensive tactics.
This video shames me to the core. The building could have been saved. Follow the simple rule.

pathetic job by the firefighters
meggy3616 why do you say that. are you a fire fighter or armchair expert
Eddie Howland they could have a done a better job before it got out of control
meggy3616 soooooo. explain. what exactly could they have done. And I'll ask again what qualifications do you have to question professional experienced firefighters?
Eddie Howland looked like a training excerise
meggy3616 I will ask again. what qualifications do you have to access this?
Not a very good example of firefighting here...
I agree totally!
în this Pub...music is still playing xD
