@@ScamboliReviews This was both a genuinely good and funny review, but I do think you underestimate how big of a bitch some people can be. That black haired degenerate girl is actually a realistic character in my opinion. People use shit from the past to scapegoat there current problems all the time. She has no friends or boyfriend and she blames it all on Shoko so she doesn't have to blame herself
So yes, the reason I'm depressed is because when I was a toddler, my mom kicked my ass after she found the poop sock. I fucking hate her

I agree with pretty much every point you make against the movie except one: Shouko's lack of personality. Yes, throughout the whole movie she smiles, waves, and apologizes but that's because she feels as though everything that goes wrong is her fault. She hates herself, as she explicitly states in the movie, and her character is centered around her self hatred and loathing. In the end, she even overcomes this with the major sacrifice Shoya makes to save her. Maybe this aspect of her personality is more developed in the manga (idk cause I haven't read it yet), but I still caught onto it during my first viewing of the film.

I agree with what you said. Maybe some people can relate to it more than others but sometimes you try to act the way you're expected to act so you don't cause pain to others, that's how Shouko acts. Throughout the movie you learn that she's putting on a mask, blaming herself for everything and trying to not cause any more pain, so she just wants to smile and apologise as she thinks that's best for everyone.
Having been in a similar situation myself at some point I can totally relate to that feeling and the way she reacts, it's very realistic to how some people would handle the same situation. :)

I feel that Shoko supposedly 'lack of personality' stems from her being an outcast and always being treated like she was special, so i feel like ever since she met Ishiba, she is breaking out of her shell and developing her sense of personality. To simply put it, this was only the beginning.

That is quite literally what Naoko Yamada is known for. Her trademark way of showing off a characters personality is the way they move around.
Heck her trademark is how she animates a characters legs. Do they walk flimsily? With confidence? Do they stutter or scurry when walking up stairs? She’s been doing this since K-on and it was clear in this movie as well.

I think shoko's one liners and plain "personality" isn't her, I think she's stuck in a loop of constant apologies and always having a smile on her to make those around her happy, so when she attempts/decides to commit suicide is when she can no longer keep up with that facade and it broke her. By the end grows to accept who she really is and it was amazing

I think it also has to do with our perspective. Throughout the manga, Shoya repeatedly feels like he should be doing more to try and connect with Skoko more. It makes it clear that the reason we don't see much of her personality is because Shoya doesn't know all that much himself. It brings up a good question about the nature of friendship, and why he keeps trying to befriend her despite knowing almost nothing about who she is or what she likes.

Shouko not having a personality kind of makes sense in the context of the story though. It's pretty standard in people who have been bullied their whole life that they just sort of withdraw and don't really express emotions as well. Through Shouko's whole life she's felt like her deafness was a problem for other people so it makes sense that she's more withdrawn and apologetic towards people.

As someone who's childhood was very similar to Shoko's to the point i can't watch this movie without curling up into a ball and sobbing like a bitch. That constant fear to be yourself lives with you the rest of your life. The hurt from the rejection you felt is so terrifying that you don't ever want to take the risk of reliving it. So you just do things that will try to get people to leave you alone. She sees herself as useless and nothing but a burden to the people around her, so having someone who is actually interested in what the real her is like has a lot of work to do to even begin to get there. It's the most accurate depiction of someone who was bullied i've ever seen, and it makes me scared to ever revisit this film because it immerses me back into those horrific years of my life.

I actually think it’s cool how some of the characters are still unchanged by the end. Everyone in this movie is flawed or has fucked up in some way, and I like how this movie doesn’t force everyone to overcome all that and be perfect by the end, like a lot of movies do. It specifically says in the case of the tall girl’s character that there is still time to grow and change, and so we have to give people the time they need to mature and better themselves. I feel like it also speaks to the fact that it’s okay to enjoy the company of people who are sometimes assholes. It’s pretty clear that by the end, most of the relationships still aren’t solid, and they’ll probably have more fights in the future like they did in the movie, and that’s okay. That’s how life is. And I appreciate that choice

Hello person who wrote a comment 2 years ago. Okay, sure, I'll give you a point that it IS a bold decision and a realistic one. But you can't expect to make a movie where 2 major characters do oopsies and fuck-ups throughtout and face little no NO CONSEQUENCES by the end and everything is a-okay and "suuuuure I was not one of main reasons you attempted suicide or anything". People will get pissed off. I sure was. Shoya faces consequences, he grows and changes to a better person because of those consequences. That is some great character development. Yet in the same movie you have 2 characthers that go unpunished, forgiven and left under no sorta of check despite their actions. That tilts me.

    • @BeefRank
      @BeefRank 2 роки тому +9

@@Firescizor Hello, I appreciate the reply. It just doesn’t make sense thematically though. Think about what caused Shoya to initially contemplate suicide. It’s because he was isolated and nobody was able to forgive him. Should we really wish for a similar attitude towards characters like ueno and kawai?
The main issue I have is your claim that there were no consequences when that is not true at all. Shoko’s suicide attempt (and Shoya’s injury by proxy) WAS the consequence, and we can see how badly it affected the people who hurt her. I’ll grant that Ueno’s remorse is hard to detect given her 1. Initial reaction and lashing out from Shoya getting hurt and 2. Her inability to express feelings of remorse (this is shown to be the case earlier in the movie and at the end), however we KNOW that she knows someone she deeply cares about nearly died because of her actions. If that’s not a consequence I don’t know what is, and it’s clear that she is slowly making strides to avoid situations like that in the future. Hope this explanation de-tilts you lol

I have heard the same complaints a lot and I think your explanation here is really good. I agree soo soooo much. One of the main themes of the movie is forgiveness and that's what the end of the movie is about. Forgiving and accepting each other's flaws and living with them. Shoya and Shoko learn so much and transform by the end, but not every character does or needs to. It's so much more realistic to me that way. There are people in this world like Ueno or Kawai that really refuse to change (at least not fully) and that can be hard to watch sometimes, but it honestly made me enjoy the movie more overall. Thanks for sharing your thoughts; it's good to know that others feel the same way about this amazing film.

@@Trail_Blazer they refuse to change their... personality "flaws", let's say. In real life, I would stop being friends with those people that wronged me. Specially to the point of me contemplating/attempt suicide!! Since Shoya and Shoko are clearly torn apart people that have deep issues in terms of social connections and sense of self worth, that still have much to learn despite the good positive point the film ended on, I simply cannot ignore the fact they are in a toxic friendship relationship with Ueno and Kawai. At least I perceive it that way...

I watched it in a discord group of like 12 ppl. Was really good hearing other people's reactions as well as discussing over certain parts that were impactful. We had a mute girl in the call who uses tts to talk and she had similar experiences in school that traumatized her even well into adulthood and still to today. She told us how she would have dreams about being able to speak to people because her classmates would act like she didn't exist since she couldn't make any vocal sounds. This made her want to be noticed. Pretty similar to shouko story in almost every way which made the movie hit 10x harder than it would for someone who has no reference in real life to compare to.

The scene where Shoya gets slapped on the bridge made me cry so damn hard, because he didn't even try to defend himself. His body language reacts more like a recoil, or a, "Get ready for what's coming," rather than a, "I have to cover my face, so she doesn't slap me again." Later on Shouya was bullied because he hurt Nishimiya. In that girl's mind Nishimiya was the cause of Shouya becoming a social outcast so she wants to take revenge. His accident was caused by Nishimiya as well. This is the reason why she is so mean to Nishimiya. There were plenty of subtle signs indicating this premise ever since the beginning.

She was very quiet and had very little personality as a kid and a teenager because being deaf is pretty lonely. It's difficult expressing yourself if you can't talk to 99% of the people you meet, be that in public or at school, work, whatever, this is likely why she was portrayed as introverted as she was.

This may be because I also read the manga so my experience with the character maybe have been expanded on but I believe Ueno thinking so much about their experience in elementary school is justified. It wasn’t just an experience it was the experience that shaped their lives after into what it became so of course she’s stuck on the past. It’s so easy to get obsessed over if questions and she can’t help but think about what could have been if just one thing had changed in her and her friends lives. Especially for an emotional immature teenage girl who is looking for something or someone to blame.
And as for the happy friends sort of ending with no development, again I don’t know if it’s also just cuz I read the manga but it wasn’t just that. It ended with all of them accepting their flaws admitting them being honest with each other even if it was about having problems with one another Shoya bringing up that he wants their relationship to continue that their arguments are apart of what makes a friendship and that’s what’s important is that they do it together and are able to come back together and accept each other.

Ueno does have her flaws, recognizes them and hates them, but unlike Shouko she's prepared to face them on and keep on trying to be the best at her convictions.

      @MrMoises621 4 роки тому +13

@@ScamboliReviews But there's a difference between having a expectation of how people SHOULD be behaving at a certain age and what reality demonstrates. Trust me dude; it's not as simple as: "18 year-olds wouldn't be hung up on things that happened so long ago, ergo, this kind of drama is not organic or realistic;" That outlook does not accurately reflect the truth as it completely dismisses underlying factors playing a role in how people are still affected by conflicts in their past or are lacking the mental capability, training or maturity to process through them. These factors include but not restricted to: a person's particular temperament; their personality types, the context of the incident, whether or not the incident is still relevant in their lives, whether or not the person has had closure about the incident, the societal norms of a particular culture, etc. Ueno's impulse to bully Shoko once she sees her again, as well as blaming her for why the group split is a reflection of her own personality issues, not bad or unrealistic character writing. She's still affected by this non-trivial elementary school conflict because she's aware of how her betrayal of Shouya affected him in middle school. She knows about the shit Shouya has been through and she blames that on herself; but as the cognitive dissonance is too much for her to bare, she displaces her self-loathing on Shoko instead. Notice any of the factors i previously listed? For Ueno, the cascading effects of the elementary school fallout are still prevalent in her life; and since her personality type makes it difficult for her to effectively process emotions of guilt and remorse, she responds the way she does. In addition, Japanese culture tends to promote more repression of emotions, this is going to be the inevitable result. A silent voice isn't just about a deaf girl and a guy who wants to atone for the shit he's done; it's also about looking at the social paradigms of Japanese culture, the tendencies of this culture's social mechanics to exacerbate issues of bullying, and how the culture goes about dealing with people who "stick out" through the ostracizing of those who are different. It's a slight observation on how these social paradigms can leave lasting marks on individuals, and how those marks can remain permanent unless these individuals are able to find personal acceptance and heal through strengthening their ties with their loved ones.
Just like your anecdotal example, I know quite a few people who've held grudges against others since Elementary School! Things like: "Oh I hate that bitch; she used to bully me all the time back in elementary school," or "this dude stole my middle school crush in the 7th grade so I don't fuck with him." The process of getting over shit in life (or towards your point, in early adolescence) is waaaaaaay more complex than what you're making it out to be. Hey, maybe you were capable of forgiving the guy who stole your gf in middle school, but you have to consider the factors that were at play that probably allowed you to make that decision. From the way you responded to this guy, it sounds like the effects of the gf theft weren't prevalent enough in your life during you transition into high school; and through this, we can assume that your personality plus the you having found closure about the conflict in some way. Perhaps you realized that if a chick is going to go off with your best friend like that, then she wasn't someone worth building a relationship with (As if you knew what went into building a meaningful relationship anyway :D ). Maybe more important things grabbed your attention and before you know it, your boy having stole your girl is the least of your worries. Anyway, good video. I just found your reasoning behind not vibing wth Ueno's character as being detached from what is actually reality

I struggle with apologizing too much and constantly worry about being a burden to others. so i felt like i was able to see myself in her character. and even though her reason for struggling with communication is different then mine I completely know what it feels like to want to communicate but not being able to. she doesn't have a over the top personality and i think its harder to convey due to her not being able to speak but to me she is a really big comfort character. ive never really come across a character like her that ive had such a strong connection with. i might have a different opinion because i read the manga which gave all the characters a lot more depth so who knows. but to me she had a pretty great personality and went through her own growth as well.

5:40 I can understand where you're coming from, because it does seem that way, but I know people who are deaf and they seem that way in real life too. A lot of the time they havent really had enough human interaction to "properly" formulate some of the general back and forths that are integral to societal communication. Or at the very least, its very difficult for them to express their thoughts and opinions to people who don't know sign language, and so a lot of the time they can seem distant, and not like real people. I personally think that whether the studio intended that perspective or not, it came through to me, and really emphasized the loneliness which shoko felt, along with making me really care about her when she does THE THING(no spoilers) in the climax of the movie. To me, I thought that shoko's characterization was very good, and her personality was forthright but subtle (I realize that probably sounds retarded and meaningless, but its the best way I can think to describe it.). To be honest my favorite part about this movie was definitely shoya’s development and how he dealt with trauma, like after bullying shoko with a group of friends he goes to far one day and everyone who was included in bullying suddenly blames him, he becomes isolated, with anxiety and depression, he planned he suicide and so he worked to give his family money before attempting, then he finds Shoko and tries to make the past right correcting his mistakes that caused him and her pain, as he gets friends and slowly opens up to other people while doing this you see him slowly being able to overcome those mental illnesses that harm him, the x’ son people’s faces slowly fly away as he begins to trust them. But I do think he was the one with the most development and deep personality, the a lot of side characters didn’t even matter much they were just part of his healing, shoko was part of his healing despite us seeing her heal and get more depressed with guilt for something that isn’t her fault she didn’t have much personality, like all I can say is that she is sweet, and cute. Despite it I still think this was an amazing movie, it even made me cry, I don’t regret watching it. How do you feel about reviewing “a whisker away” if you haven’t yet?

I just can't make a conclusion between Kimi No Na Wa and Koe to Katachi.
I loved them both equally, for completely different reasons.
But I definitely can differentiate between the two...
Kimi No Na Wa had me in a feeling that no other movie have ever had.
The last scene and where it ended took my actual breathe away for a moment, yes! Then the next 30 minutes I felt so empty that I can't even explain the actual feeling, it felt so empty that few times I couldn't breath properly. And this sense of loneliness and emptyness were around me for couple of days. I am still not fully recovered from it.
Just merely two hours of knowing two characters and that immense sence of attachment towards them, is still impossible me to believe.
The film was about how Love can break any barrier, the viewers watching can actually feel that at the ending, and when a movie can make you feel the same of what what it wanna say, that inevitably becomes a great film.
Speciality of Kimi No Na Wa: Unique Story, Never Scene Visuals, Background Score, Carefully but Deeply Rooted Emotion, Main Leads.
Koe No Katachi is THE very beautiful film, and also one of the saddest one out there. It carefully talks some sensitive issue of real world. One who having the same problem, if he/she watches this, it definitely will make them re-think. Oh and it makes you cry a lot.
Speciality of Koe No Katachi : Voice Actors (specially the girl voice actor, I love her), Memorable Emotional Scenes (Her "I lige moo" scene🤗, He saving her from the fall😲😫, She saying "Zorry" to Ishida's mom😖😢, Their confessions in the bridge😢😣, He couldn't stop crying 😭😭😭😭😭 these just stays in the heart for always), Brilliant Characterisation, Supporting Characters, A Strong Inspiration for Real Life.
One thing made me sad thinking about is, Koe No Katachi is very much underappreciated than Kimi No Na Wa, being both seemingly at same level.
Probably because Koe No Katachi(September) were released closed to Kimi No Na Wa(August).
When people were watching Kimi No Na Wa again again because of its grand Opus, Koe No Katachi just slips through the eyes. For audience rewatching Kimi No Na Wa became more preferable, rather than watching another new movie.
How great your movie might be but if the one you are competing with is someone people refering as Next Miyazaki, it's inevitable that you end up sidelined.
But atleast Koe No Katachi is not underrated, and finally people are realising what a great of movie it is.
    Peace 🙏🏼

You seem the most down to earth and considerate anituber I've watched so far. You always take into account details about shows that could affect people in certain ways depending on their personality, and stuff about the show that truly shows its quality. I'm hella down to have a day I can call "weekly scamboli vid day" like I do on fridays with fireforce or jojo (coincidentally, dd productions makes good friday shows). You seem to look at comments a lot and are very experimental, so I thought I'd also mention that despite how well visualized your videos are, you don't seem to know a whole lot about how important visual design like storyboards or character designs are, or how difficult they are to keep up with. I might be a bit biased in that regard being an animator, character designer and storyboarder, but to me that lack of knowledge for that side of the industry kind of stands out when your videos themselves are so cohesive and well visualized. That said, I hope you actually see this day late comment, cause you've been like my fav youtuber lately.

    I cried during this movie.
I was bullied a lot in highschool and seeing Shoko try to kill herself broke me.
This movie is a MASTAPEECE and I'll give it a 9.5/10.

Holy shit man your reviews put me in such a good mood. The way you incorporate comedy, while being able to give out your point of view, is like reliving the anime in different eyes which is so refreshing.

i never heard anything about this movie before watching it and i mainly am into shounen and stuff, and i was blown away not by the cast, or the storytelling, or the interactions between the characters, but by the experience of it all combined. it felt more like a journey than a movie and thats what i liked so much about it.

It definently makes more sense and carries more meaning to those who have been through it. Like.. suicidal peoples logic is bad, but that’s because your reasoning can be so obscured by your hate for yourself and your life. The way shouko apologized all the time in order to not be a burden (but became a greater burden by bottling her emotions) and the way shou was dissociating, the way he never cried until the end of the movie when he realized there were plenty of reasons to keep on living makes perfect sense, it showed me these things from a different perspective (again maybe I was projecting my own emotions into the characters and it isn’t that deep)
