That 3rd swing I call the Zorro swing in a pattern of a Z fast walking. Low & slow name of the game. Good lessons John & you're spot on. Be patient & you will love the hobby.

I've been hunting for 18 years. A big mistake I see people make is they go to a field and they jump around too much. They'll detect an area dig a can then move to another area dig a can. Do this 5 or 6 times and call it quits. My advice is to go to a spot people may not have detected before like the edges of a park or between bushes and just stay in that small area. Digging targets for 2 hours or more, you're more likely to find something rather than jumping around a field for 30 minutes and leaving. Happy Hunting!!

Very true, it's so important to grid and cover tight areas in large spots to really know what's there. Thanks for watching!

And every state has different locations, different finds👍.

Awesome video John! I see a few people not overlapping their swing, and sometimes 3’ between swings, are surely missing targets. Overlapping is one thing that I try to concentrate on.
    Lots of good points!!

Man I’m glad I found some cool stuff at the very beginning of my career as a detector because I’ve been on a serious dry spell for about a month. Just spent three days at the ocean and only found a kids bracelet, some modern clad and part of a broken silver ring. I know it’s out there. In my first week I found an 1897 barber out at a very well hunted river crossing. Wish me luck to break my current spell. 😂cheers.

Hey John and viewers. Great tips and true advise. One of the most enjoyable and rewarding hobbies there is. I've never stopped dirt fishing since I got the bug back in 1973 and have hunted, land and sea, all over the world and every environment except rocky gold prospecting. (too old for that) If I may offer additional info to the swing for large open areas. Your swinging arm can extend the detector sweeping range if you swing wide. Horizontally. Try not to stop 2' or so from your hips. I use a "windshield wiper" type move in an overlapping arc pattern. You should be able to double and maybe triple the ground coverage, versus just the ground a foot or two in front of you. I do also alternate to a horizontal wide swing. You will get used to it and also try to alternate swinging with both arms.
There's lots to learn about soil conditions, terrain (reading the ground area), types of hunting (coins, relics, jewelry), machine settings and different machines and equipment. But if your starting out in first grade, don't sweat the college entrance exam. "The more you learn, the more you'll earn and the more you earn, the more you'll learn." After 50 years of diggin, I'll admit I haven't had to learn much more other than how to use a new machine. So newbies, learn the basics, practice, watch DTB and others BUT don't drop out! There is a learning curve and soon you'll be graduating!
Sorry John if I hijacked your comments. Gotta hook up some day. God Bless man.

Good video, I see a lot of videos where the first thing I think is why are they swinging like that? Super fast while walking too fast even, missing even more ground or sand. I agree with what said about trying to tell them anything, they act like its sacrilege, and it's something I have learned to never do with people, some just won't change know matter what they might be missing.

Great video John - I have made great finds using a Garrett Ace 400 (admittedly not a state-of-the-art detector), using exactly the techniques you demonstrated in the video. My belief is that ANY metal detector will find good non-ferrous targets less than 8 inches IF you swing correctly and are patient. Keep up the great work!

Appreciate the video! You said you gave up digging that target after about 13 inches, is that a good rule for areas with potential underground pipes or was it just not worth going further? I'll be getting started after Christmas and just trying to soak in as much as possible before I get my hands on the gear.
