Rigging and Accessories for the R5C Revisited Almost 2 years later - EOS R5C Tip 28

- It’s been almost 2 years since the R5C was released, and I started rigging mine out for video work. Over that time a lot has changed both in my needs and goals and in the industry as a whole.
On my side of things, I’ve become less of a photographer and more focused on video. This has resulted in different needs and requirements than I had when I started out. On the other hand, the accessory industry has also not been static, and new products have come to market over the last year or so that better support the R5C.
So in this video I’m going to revisit how I’ve got my R5C setup and rigged, what’s worked and hasn’t, and what I’ve found to be good places to put my money and where it hasn’t been as well spent.

Great video! I am in the market for a new hybrid camera and i think the R5C might be the best option. Really enjoyed your approach to powering the camera. The NPF solution seems like a good option.
I got a 50 watt hour v mount battery and a V-Mount adapter for the bottom of the DJI RS2. Usually I just use the gimbal until the battery dies and switch it though rather than waste time setting it up. However if I did have another gig where I needed the gimbal all day it would be suitable.
If you did buy the small rig black mamba kit it comes with a cable securing option That will be sure to frustrate you to no end. It definitely does work though once you get it in secure
I found SmallRigs cable clamp to be largely useless. Yes, if you get everything setup right it will hold the cables. But since the clamps use a sliding action, if your cable's connectors are precisely sized, the clamps puts force on the connector. The entire point of the Canon cable protector is to prevent torque from being applied to the connectors and therefore from breaking the solder joints. So that's one strike against the SmallRig clamp.
The second strike is that it blocks the mic, headphone, and PC sync jacks. Granted, I don't usually use them. But when push comes to shove, I also don't want to have to get out a hex driver to get to them either when I need them.
Ideally, if you're trying to protect the ports, you want to keep the cables centered with no extra torque on the jacks, with as small of a loop of cable as you can have before you run into serious strain relief of some sort. Barring proper strain relief, small tidily routed cables that can't be easily snagged is ideal.
@@PointsInFocus I have never even thought to use the Canon one, but I do remember in your previous video you said it blocked the port. For me I can still access and plug in a mic. I don't plug in headphones directly to the camera but I still have access to my ports. I understand what you're saying about pressure on the ports. You have to get it so tight with the slider, then push and secure it with the tiny pin. I need a fast solution for my setup right now. Currently putting a lot of strain on my family trying to work 15 to 18 hours a day. So if I can record I need to be able to switch from camera to gimbal pretty quick. If I would have listened to you from the beginning it would have been better off. Unfortunately, It is in my nature to overthink and overspend. Thank you so much as always. I don't know how you're improving so fast with UA-cam and it gives me hope. You had all the basics down right away with super informative videos. Now your videos are tailored to your audience and optimized very well. Keep it up!
So my ultimately solution for cables on the camera is to basically perminately keep short cables always in the ports and on the port protector. With the USB cable, I can easily plug it into either of my battery solutions, and if I need something longer, or to hook it up to a computer, I use a USB-C coupler.
For the HDMI cable, I do basically the same thing. Though I have it wrapped through the strain relief on the Canon port protector. It's long enough to plug in to a monitor on camera, otherwise I use an HDMI coupler to extend it to whatever I need.
One thing to keep in mind, is the HDMI micro is not really a good connector. It's significnatly more fragile than the mini connector, and has a much lower cycle rating. In general, I try to keep as much pressure off the connector, and plug/unplug it as little as possible.

Yes. Though I almost always mount it to the handle, using either the cold shoe and a mini-ball head or rotate/tilt head, or a magic arm to the 1/4-20 or Arri pined 3/8-16 threads.

I love your R5C videos, just bought one, but I think I might have gotten a lemon. When you have the lcd screen closed, is there any wiggle in it, for example if you press it slightly upwards, toward the viewfinder? It's hard to know what's within the accepted tolerances, but my R5 has zero wiggle when closed. Oh, and when slightly underexposing the camera against a white wall for example, I get awful vertical magenta banding in clog3. Do you reckon this is normal?
Yes, there is. Maybe around 1 mm at the far end. Enough to be noticeable if you wiggle it. That said, one big difference between the R5 and R5C is that the R5's screen folds completely into the body while the R5C's doesn't quite lock down that tightly.
The banding doesn't sound right through. But, before you call Canon, if you haven't run auto black balance (ABB on the top fo of the shoot 6 menu) try that first. If that doesn't clear it up, then you'll probably want to talk to Canon about it.

Assuming I/Google translated that correctly.
4K raw requires a 4K sensor, you can't down sample and still have raw sensor data. Though you can shoot raw in the other sensor modes, in S35 it's 5.7K and in S16 it's around 3K.
As for dual pixel AF, I'm not quite sure what you're saying, but the R5C (as do all Canon Cinema cameras) does use dual pixel AF for focusing.

I ended up getting the Black Mamba cage for my R5C and now the eyelet screw is completely stripped. Definitely user error but the screw is like aluminum foil strength. Trying to figure out the best way to get it out probably drill. Or get a reverse drill bit very tiny one
Almost all of thse cages are Aluminum. You absolutely don't want to crank down on any of the screws more than tight enough. If you need to hang something use a piece of NATO rail with multiple screws into the cage, or an Arri style 3/8-16 thread with the rotation locking pins.
FYI, Accsoon also have a NP-F to USB-PD adapter offereing similar power solution. The Accsoon one has 2 anti-rotation pin holes on the bottom side of the adapter. Does the small-rig one has this feature?
No. But it has a slot that can accept multiple captive screws, so you can prevent it from rotating that way.
