    Great video dude. I wish canon and Sony would open up their MI shoe to others than just tascam. No knock on them but would love to see some solution from sound devices and even deity/rode/senn to make an onboard shotgun mic like Sony’s ecm b1m.

      @Josh_Sattin 7 місяців тому +1

      Thanks Tyler! Yeah that would be cool if they opened that up. So many cool possibilities for accessories. I always though it was weird that Canon opened it up just for Tascam for this one device and didn't make one of these themselves.

    • @schimor
      @schimor 7 місяців тому

      Well. One argument that comes to mind is putting a large accessory in the multi-function shoe is not always very convenient...I'll assume that most of us use cages on our cameras and having this ginormous thingamajig on top is..cumbersome. Shoulder rigs? Nop. Gimbles? Again nop.
      Now if they were remote accessories (with a cable between the shoe and the device) so we could mount the accessory on rods, clamps, 1/4 & 3/8 threads then I'd definitely be sold.

    Amazing review Josh. As someone who has fried two of these now, and since learned the hard way about plugging in the Tascam (or a xlr mic) while the camera is on (and I might add with phantom power enabled on the tascam module) - I appreciate you putting out this video for people on the fence about these Tascam modules. As long as you do the proper steps, this mic module is a fantastic system for the R5C and R3. Thank you for thoroughly explaining this around the 22 min mark.

    Josh I think maybe the most important thing with having this unit is as I understand it bypasses the cameras preamps and therefore the sound quality is so much better. I must admit I am not at all sure why all these cameras have such bad preamps as these days fitting better ones would add very little extra cost but like many things the camera companies would rather spend the money adding not required gimmicks rather than improving the existing cameras. White balancing is one example.

    • @albedo0point39

      Low noise preamp circuit design can require more PCB space - for shielding, separation, or for larger components such as transformer coupling.

    Thanks for the nice overview. Had mine for a year, works great, only downside: When connecting two condenser mics that each require 48V, the unit sometimes just shuts down. regardless if set to camera, or ext power.... Had to learn it the hard way when shooting an interview with 2 condenser mics and the unit kept on shutting off randomly...

    One thing I’d mention is that the separate recorders can output the signal they’re recording to the camera, usually through an attenuator cable. Now you’ve got High end recording and technically no need to sync in post AND audio backup on the recorder itself.

    Just purchased the Zoom H4N Pro for the R5C because I've heard about the Tascam reliability issues for years now... I was going to be using an AUX cable to feed the Zoom into the video. For $400, the Tascam is a pretty steep price. Coming from my Panasonic XLR module, I was wanting the same type of thing, but I was nervous about the issues that seemed to be in all the reviews. I guess I'll decide here soon what to do.

However, I trust your judgement and now you have me interested again. That’s the biggest hang up on the r5c for me. I always default to my c70 for talking heads because of the audio. How far away are you sitting from your camera, what focal length are you filming at, and are you on full frame or S35? Thank you very much for a very good video - again! Can I ask 2 questions, please!
    1: It is not possible to get more than two tracks from the same microphone connected to the Tascam - one main track and one safety track (not 2 or 3 safety tracks)?
    2: In general - what do you think about having the safety track on Auto?

    • @Josh_Sattin
      @Josh_Sattin 4 місяці тому +1

      You're welcome. You can get two tracks from one input like I explain in this video. The common use is to have the second channel be a safety track. I generally don't trust the auto gain setting on most devices. I haven't tried it enough to let you know if it's reliable. If you want to experiment though, letting the second channel be auto would let you know how well it works and wouldn't risk the project since it's a backup track.

      @@htesta1 Yes really. This Tascam unit came out aftter the release of the R5. The R5 was not designed with a hot shoe that would work with it. Many later models do have that (R7, R6II, R3, etc.). So you can't get XLR audio into the R5 through the hot shoe. You will need an external audio device.
