  • CMA's Rescue Team in Belize recently rescued a stranded baby manatee that was found alone. Watch as rescuers find the calf, bottle feed it and transport it to a rehab center.
The male manatee calf was estimated to be only 2-3 weeks old. Rescuers carried him into the rescue truck and prepared for transport to a rehab center. He was covered with a towel and splashed with water to prepare for the long journey. The rehab center was several hours away. Rescuers kept the calf hydrated and poured water to keep it wet. The calf seemed physically OK during the initial assessment but showed signs of dehydration from not feeding in a while. Thanks to the rescuers, he received plenty of fluids during transport. After an hour-and-a-half trip, he was handed off to the rehab team and successfully made it to the Wildtracks rehab center, where he is getting some rest now.
The calf has a long road to recovery and eventual release, but he has a second chance at life thanks to rescuers and the community in Belize.

Manatees don’t need to be taught how to catch their food, because they mainly feed on seagrass, so they are able to learn the simple skills they need to survive. It is still a delicate process and rehabbers must be careful not to let the manatees become dependent on human care or encourage human interaction, which could be dangerous for them in the wild.
They are not released into the wild until they reach a minimum age, size and weight and have demonstrated that they can find food on their own.

The manatee calf has not been given a name yet, and it is now under the care of the Wildtracks rehab center in Belize.
