This is the ONE video that gives a very detailed explanation of all the options of Inset. Sometimes the description in blender manual is not clear enough (at least not for the beginners). This video is really helpful for understanding all the effects of the options. Thank you.
Very well-made tutorial. Although it didn't solve my problem (which I solved now), but the structure, the explanation and the timestamps are really, really helpful. Thank you sooo much!
Discovered a solution I believe and it is one that nobody talks about. If you mirror something the boundary will work some of the time and not others. The reason is that if you put the item into transparent mode and delete half the vertices then mirror it works. If you dissolve the vertices then it doesn't. I hope this helps..
Thanks for the tutes. --For those even more noob than I, the point about the scale affecting the inset can be rectified by APPLYING (CTRL+A) the Scale parameter. THE DIMENSIONS DISPLAY!?!?!? What addon does that???
Well. Thank you for the addition for applying scale. I mentioned this in some other videos before, but I should have give the hint in this one as well.... The dimensions display? I guess you mean the measurements. Beside the viewport gizmo button in the UI of the viewport is the "viewport display" menue. Click this button in edit mode and go to the measurement section. Activate there "length", "edge angle" or something else
how to delete anything like i made a circle on a box now i want delete that inner part of that circle. i am trying delete option for for that but i am not able to delete.so many options are coming but i am unable to identify. i have tried select the in circle and press X but still i am not able to delete. some one please help.
i add a cylilnder, to make a bomb, then i want to add several round faces in the middle of it, to be able to model the variations in diameter of the bomb on its longitudinal axis. but - when i press "I" to inset, the new face only moves a few clicks away from the original - if i drag the mouse further, it goes back to the origin. can someone be so kind to explain why the new face moves along in this "elastic" way, instead of just going on through the enitre length of the cylinder?
As a trained 3DS max user who can't afford a 3DS MAX license blender drives me insane. How the frack do I inset with keyboard values! I never want to randomly slide on the screen, I need exact dimensions!
Which Blender version are you using? It appears automatically here in Blender 2.93 (my actual version) when I use the Inset function. Maybe you have a different position of the box?
Whenever I extrude inside, Blender keeps an other model inside the model, so when i want to make the face smaller, the inner one doesnt move and it brakes the model. need help
It is not a addon, it is just a overlay setting. You have to select your object, go to Edit Mode and check the 'overlay' button on the top right corner of your 3d space. A big menu pops up and you have to head down nearly to to buttom and search for 'Measurements'. Enable 'Edge Length' or something you need. I made a video about this issue as well: ua-cam.com/video/MfBOFuFTs28/v-deo.html
Driving me crazy... Mine doesn't work at all like you show in the video. I have a square, and want an inset with 2.5 mm from all the 4 edges.. When using inset, it creates different distances from the 2 long side, compared to the 2 short sides. Spending hours, trying to find out how to get the fixed distance from every edge. Selecting 'offset relative' doesn't give me the option to enter a number like in your video. Anyone any idea??
@@25games what do you mean apply scale? Once you input the scale of the object, then what? How do you overwrite the object's new scale to be the "normal" 1x1x1 scale? 5 mins later I learned that you can apply a custom scale with [CTRL][A] to fix this problem. Wish you'd covered that, it was the only thing I didn't know about that was causing all sorts of issues.

Ah, okay, I'm dumb, you had all vertices/edges planar. In any case, very useful video, I use inset all the time and somehow I didn't know about the edge rail.
You've already figured it out, but in other apps Alt-S would be called "Normal Move", not anything to do with scale, except it's used to 'fatten up' tubes and other complex forms where Scale wouldn't work.
How the fuck can I make a L shaped selection of faces maintain the edges in-between the acute side to remain straight? I'm making a low poly platform with a ramp and bump edges and looks terrible when inseting that some of its edges are not straight and makes the ramp part tilted.

Hi, I was doing inset faces and it went inside like quadrants, how do i make the entire shape go inside and not just quadrants of the shape?
Is there a way that I can inset a face from 3 sides instead of all four?
I don't think so. Just create an inset with 4 sides and dissolve one edge?
