  • I bought a popup trailer that was a mess. So I ripped it down and built a new trailer on the frame. I wanted the trailer to fit in a garage. I also wanted to be able to stand up in the trailer. This is what I ended up with. The trailer is framed up using 2x6 steel studs. I initially tech screwed them in place, then used rivets, and eventually decided that welding would hold them together just fine. I used a mixture of steel framing and wood lumber to create the rest of the skeleton. then i sheeted the frame with 1/4" Hardboard. I used bondo on all the seams to make them flush and strong. I used fiberglass on all the corners. then sheeted the entire outside with fiberglass (surfboard/boat glass) . then i coated the outside with Marine Primer, then used Oil based rust oleum paint on the exterior. I used white melamine on top of the wood interior framing My wife made the curtains and i installed some old trailer windows that i had in the shop. I installed wood floor inside over top of the treated particle board. I installed electrical using the inverter that i pulled from the pop-up trailer, ran 12V to all of the lights and outlets. the build ended up costing just under $1500 (including the $500 pop-up trailer.)

great build, always fun to see a fellow camper builder turn out a fine piece of work. I hope you enjoy camping in it as much as you enjoyed building it.

I love your design, this is something like that that I want to do. The angle of the roof is actually close to a flying wing and as you speed up to travelling speed, this shape should lessen the weight on the trailer the same way it would do on a airplane. If you have kept the slide out part of the pull-out bed frame, you should think of building a smaller pull-out for a AC that would allow it not to cause drag by sticking outside during travel

Did you have to change anything for titling this?

Is that a fiber glass wrap for the skin? I'm just planning out my build now, and I'm curious.

So Devin the Skelton of this camper is 2x6 metal? It looks more like a C channel aluminum or something maybe I didn't. make my first question clear I wanted to know what you used to make the internal Skelton frame? And while I'm at it what did you use to cover it afterwards the roof too and what makes it water tight?

Devin what did you use for the frame? And did you weld it? Or what any information on what you used would be appreciated.

I used commercial framing studs that I got on Craigslist for just a few dollars. 2x6. I used rivets at first, but found that it welded just fine, so I went back after and welded it together. I have made a few trailers and really like the steel framing. It is light, easy to attach, and really strong!

You are not really converting a pop-up. You tore down and tossed out a pop-up and built a new camper on the old frame.
