Never heard this before and I have all of Gerry's music up to Girl on a Swing & many covers. I saw him live on several occasions. Thanks for posting it. Sad to hear of his passing. He was one of the best and certainly one of the most ppular men in the pop music industry and a real hero in Liverpool. RIP GERRY.
What a lovely song. You can just tell that Gerry is a wonderful, kind and caring man by his rendition. I love all his music and some of those "non-hits" are true gems discovered listening to the album rather than the radio. I love this man.
I heard this song when I was five years old, now I¨m 45 years old...beatiful memories, I ask them post the lyrics of this song, please. I am from México.
if anybody is interested there is a lovely version imo of this in French by Francoise Hardy entitled Laisse-le-moi, which I actually prefer. I say this as a huge fan of Gerry & The Pacemakers.....
I must be one of the few people who (unfortunately, as it wasn't a hit) bought this as a single back in 1967. I still have it in my old vinyl collection, trouble is, I don't have a record player! It's all blasted CD's and 'downloads' nowadays! Got all Gerry's singles, including the one's that didn't really make it, such as the above tune, 'Girl On A Swing', 'La,La,La', 'Gilbert Green', etc. - If you've got 'Gilbert Green' maybe you could upload it? A fascinating record! Thank's once again.
In 1963 or 1964 Beatles manager Brian Epstein, ask Tony Sheridan, if he would agree Gerry Marsden to recording one of his songs; Please Let Them Be, and Tony Sheridan said yes, George Harrison had suggested to Brian Epstein, that Gerry Marsden do the song. So Gerry Marsden recorded it, but it did not doo too much, but Tony Sheridan said, He did quite a good of singing it. The single was put under Gerry Marsdens solo name.
Had this Columbia Record 45 way back in the 60's. Beautiful song, sung excellently -- as usual -- by Gerry Marsden (of the Pacemakers). Marsden should have had a successful solo career. His voice is just so sincere and he always performed well. I think this didn't sell because no one knew who Gerry Marsden was. His success was on the Laurie label & Columbia (under the direction of Mitch Miller) probably didn't know what to do with him -- Columbia didn't know what to do with Aretha Franklin when they had her. It took Atlantic Records to launch her career. Now, had Gerry moved over to Capitol where The Beatles were -- he may have had a chance.
Capitol was notorious for marginalizing rock and roll until their Canadian management took it upon themselves to promote the Beatles. After that success, though, the upper management in the USA probably caught on to opportunities they had been missing.
I was also one of the people who bought this record. At present I am the same , not having a turntable to play it on. However, for my 50th birthday my son converted this, Gilbert Green and The Year of April, plus a lot more from the 1970s onto a special CD, just for me. Gerry has since signed the CD for me. Actually since then a Girl on a Swing CD (Import) has been issued with these tracks on .. although I have to say that the re-mastering done by my son was far superior !!
Rest In Peace Gerry. I'm 72 and I allways was a fan, from the sixties till forever.
I'll miss him too
Thank you for sharing your wonderful voice with us,
RIP Gerry

Totally agree. Francoise Hardy’s is far superior. The orchestration is poor on Marsdens original in comparison.

How old is Victoria
Like the Beatles said, Let Them Be.
