This technique is one that Karen Rice uses alot too! She is a fellow UA-cam Artist based in the UK. She always has a lot of fun with using cut up credit cards and she uses tree twigs and pallet knifes as well. She says it's fun to break the rules. And it more resembles oil painting than watercolor. She is fun to watch. This was a great outcome. Thanks for sharing your experience. I have done a little of it. It works really well for making a cityscape/ harbor with tall angular shapes and then a reflection on water.
Marisa Calvo thanks Marisa, I’ll have a look. I think I’ve seen her name come up! I’ll have a look at some of her videos! It’s always good to see different ways of using watercolour! As my mentor Tony Smibert always said “there are no rules, just consequences”. Very true! Thanks for watching! 👍🙏
Loved the demonstration. The painting came out wonderful. I've already looked up Lena. She's amazing. I'm starting to do more abstract and love it. It's so fun and exhilarating. I love the lack of control in some ways. You never know what's going to happen when the paint and water move together. I'm excited to look up your other videos. On this video the music was beautiful but a little bit loud and I couldn't hear your voice sometimes. Thank you so much for this.
You say that this is the first time you have tried this type of painting. I think that you have done really good. A great finished result. Much appreciated. Thank you. :)
Hi Summer, yes it was the first time I had ever squeezed pigment onto a container lid and then use that to paint! It was really great fun! I then did the next video in a similar fashion. Thanks for watching! 👍🙏
Thanks! Lovely! I love Lena's work as well as Karen Rice. You just showed me a new technique that I never thought of...so back to painting with a plastic card I think! Another one that inspires me a lot is Jane Betteridge.
Hi Helene! Thanks a lot! I know Lena’s and Karen’s work and live both of those but I don’t know Jane. Will have to check her out! Thanks for watching! 👍🙏
I was just looking at signing up your beginners course when I found this. For me I have to say it was just magical watching it unfold. I’m so in love with this! Also as I’m an Ozzie too, I could understand you with the beautiful music. Made it even more magical!

You are one of the few people who actually helps us understand how to develop techniques in watercolour. And you do it SO well. Sometimes it is difficult to follow your voice when music is playing in the background. As a matter of interest is the tablecloth you use to mix your paints a plastic one? I want to try that too!

Just fabulous. Try using the same method using Yupo. I have also used gouache on Yupo which produced gorgeous results. Thank you for giving it a go & for sharing. My next test is sticking the Yupo painting to a board & covering it with resin. Keep it up & once again thanks.
Thank you very much Scott for sharing this, yah, I appreciated Lena and tried somme in her style last year. Honestly , I love the blue in yours painting and I love theTony Smibert ‘s style, I got his books for a while. Happy for your next video sharing 🕊 😇 💕
Hi Celeste, yes her style is really fun and for me very uncontrollable! And of course I love Tony Smibert’s style....the reason I started painting in watercolour 30 years ago! Thanks for watching! 👍🙏
Thanks Scott Swinson, yes, I see, I see you are very professional 👨🏻🎨 All yours demonstrations are so appreciated, thank you very much for sharing 🙏🏻 😇 🕊 💕

Just discovered you Scott and like many others also love Lena's work and Tony Smibert - both inspiring artists. This painting is fantastic - you've captured the essence and Zen of watercolour! I have subscribed to your channel, and it's nice to hear an Aussie voice.
Hi Julie, thanks so much. I do love both those artists work! I was really lucky to be taught watercolour by Tony Smibert from the age of 12. He is a lovely man, amazing teacher and a master in watercolour! I love his abstract work! If you ever get a chance to do one of his courses in Longford, Tasmania you should! I’m not sure if they are still running! Thanks for watching! If you would like a particular demonstration in the style and genre I paint let me know! Which part of Australia are you from? 👍🙏
@@ScottSwinson Thanks Scott for you nice reply. I'm in Sydney, and about three years ago I had enrolled to do a painting course with Tony but unfortunately had to cancel. How fortunate you were to be taught by him. I have several of his books and love looking at his work.
@@juliecremer3545 Hi Julie, I'm in Sydney too! Depends who you ask! I live in Engadine, next to the Royal National Park. That is unfortunate you had to cancel. His books are just fantastic! He got in hooked on JMW Turner and I have loved landscapes and abstraction ever since. Hope you find some value in the videos here. Thanks. Scott
Hi Christine, yes I really love her work too! So free. So relaxed! really powerful though! I do like this painting process and will see where it takes me. Thanks for watching!
Thanks David! I do too! This was my first attempt at using that style and process and funnily enough it is still my favorite out of about 5 now. Thanks for watching and the feedback. It takes time to produce these and it is good to know that people find them helpful. Cheers Scott
Hi Meredith! Thank you! It is one of my favourite paintings! It is amazing how the very first time you try something you create something great then when you try it subsequently it does not work out as well!
Great painting once again. I do like Lena's paintings also. You said something about why the paper didn't buckle but I can't quite catch what you said. Thanks.
Hi Joe, yes her painting style is pretty cool! I had seen it but never tried it! I mentioned that the paper would not buckle because it was only taped at the top which means as it expands when wet, and I really wet it! Then it can just expand on the board and will stay flat! Pretty cool! Thanks for watching! 👍
@Freed1 Hi Freed! Yes I remembered seeing her on youtube a while ago and then when someone asked me to do a certain experiment it reminded me of her! I love that free style and thanks for the info about her paper. I think a slightly more robust paper than Rives BFK would be a good idea. Thanks for watching! Watercolour can be so much more than just quaint cottages on a hillside! Good luck! Let me know how you get on. I'm pretty excited to try this process with the ocean I live next to and central australia landscapes which I visit from time to time.
@@ScottSwinson In one of her demos she says she uses 490g acid free cardboard! I tried to get this but I could only find it from her preferred supplier in Belgium. In others she uses 300g NOT.
Hi Joe, thanks for that. It makes sense that she uses pretty thick paper. I saw somewhere written clay covered paper? or something like that? I've never heard of that! I think with the level of wetness she has you just need thick (300gsm) cold pressed or NOT watercolour paper with a bit of sizing. I'd really like to see that 490g cardboard! wow! I know Sabrina Garrasi uses pretty think paper with her style as well and gold leaf!
Hi Brian, glad you liked it! For some people a full sheet of watercolour paper is pretty daunting but doing this any size would totally work! Good luck!! Let me know how you get on! Thanks for watching! 👍🙏
I have 't just started playing around with watercolours in the last two days. I can't even draw a stick figure but love this idea of abstract art. Just seen your youtube for the first time. Hi Susan! Glad you liked the video! Abstraction is a very interesting process! I have a playlist with about 12 videos similar to the one you liked. Hope you enjoy them! Thanks fir watching! 👍🙏
Hi from Bologna (Italy). It is very interesting your technique and I want try it on my own. Who inspired you? Which is the technique you prefer with water paintings? Thank you for all. Donato
Hi donato! Thanks! Glad you like the painting! This painting was inspired by Lena Gemzoe. You should check out her videos. I love working wet in wet with large hake brushes. Good luck with your painting. Hopefully there are lots of videos on my channel that can help you. Especially the early videos about paints, brushes and paper. Good to know. 👍
For this type of painting a paper that doesn't absorb the paint too quickly is I guess what one would use? Is there a cheaper alternative paper? I cannot afford what you use! I love your painting.
Hi Catherine! Yes a paper with some sizing is a good idea! I looked into cheaper paper today snd found Hahnemuhle printmaking paper. It was about 56cm x 75cm snd 300gsm. It was $11 Australian a sheet at my local and expensive art store! That’s pretty cheap in my books. It is acid free. I’ll use it and see what I think of it! 👍👍
@@ScottSwinson Thanks Scott! So helpful. Two more questions! Is is hot pressed paper? And why do you use printing paper and not watercolour paper? Got to get it right!
Hi Catherine! Sorry for the delay! UA-cam don’t alert me about replies do I can easily miss them! It is not hot pressed paper it is similar to medium cold pressed in texture. I use etching paper/printing paper because I like the way the watercolour moves on it when working wet in wet. You could just as easily use watercolour paper. 👍👍
Hi Joanne! Thanks, glad you liked it! I always put the paper, paints snd brushes in the description. It was Rives bfk etching paper 280gsm 56cm x 76cm white. 👍👍
This turned out beautifully Scott. Was that a sponge used for the bottom that made the wave appearance? I loved it! Thanks for sharing your work. Inspirational and I am looking forward to trying this technique.
Hi Beachwood. The mark at the bottom was made with the same piece of plastic I used to paint the whole painting. It was a cut out lid of butter soft! Thanks for your lovely comments! 🍺🙏
Hi Maureen! Welcome! I use Winsor and Newton artist quality watercolours mainly because I have always used them and so I really know how they behave on the page etc. For this painting I used a sheet of Rives BFK I think but it could even work better with other cold pressed watercolour papers that have a bit more sizing. Good luck! Cheers Scott
Hi Francisca, I mostly used winsor and newton artist quality paints but I think one of the tubes of paint was another brand like HCW? Thanks for watching. Pretty cool process and end result! 👍🙏
Hi Ulla, I know I’m sorry about that. I re-edited that video with a voice over. Have a watch of that! It will be better! Thanks for watching! I’m slowly learning how to make videos! 👍🙏
Thanks for the video. It's a vengeful video. Is it possible for you to upload this video again without background music? Bgm is too and most of the union said is hardly heard. Thanks again!
Hi Adam, I used Rives BFK etching paper by Arches but you could use any paper like a cold pressed, medium, Arches watercolour paper and it would work out totally fine. In fact I think that type of paper would work better as it is not as soft and so would cope better with the volume of water. Good luck. 😀
No worries! There are a few videos in abstract play list that are similar. I will definitely keep doing some paintings like this! Thanks for watching! 👍🙏
Hi puspanjali, you can do something similar on watercolour canvas or paint on a watercolour ground onto a normal primed canvas. It will not be the same as paper but will be similar. I will be making a video soon on painting watercolour onto paper then varnishing then attaching to canvas. Good luck! 👍🙏🇦🇺
Thanks Shannon, will have to look that artist up! I also love string oil abstract landscapes. There is a Tasmanian painter Geoffrey Dyer who I just love! Thanks for watching! 👍🙏
Many thanks for your reply. I just can't seem to achieve the fantastic visuals that you can in your tutorial, but then that may be down to your talent and not just my excuse of using poor quality paper. 😂
Thanks Jocelyn! Glad you liked it! Someone gave me similar feedback ages ago about this video and so I recorded a voice over. Here is the link. Happy painting! ua-cam.com/video/X7q7R1OPzk4/v-deo.html Cheers Scott
Thanks John or Jen! For me it’s because music and painting go together. They always have for me. This video was RE-recorded with a voice over that one of my subscribers requested in a polite way. The link is below. Cheers Scott
I would love to follow this but I can't hear what you're saying because the background music is so loud! You don't need background music when you are speaking.
Hi john, I’m sorry about that. I love too much the combination of music and painting and find it hard to separate the two! I will re-release this video without any music if you like? I can just edit it out then upload to UA-cam. I’ll let you know. But I could probably do that tonight. Thanks for watching. I have tried to not have any music when talking in my more recent videos due to similar feedback. 👍🥺
Hi John, this is trickier than I thought. My dialogue is joined with the music in the saved apple prores 422 file so it’s going to take me a few days to figure this out! Sorry thought I’d be able to do it quickly tonight and upload! Will let you know when I do. Cheers Scott.
Hi Kerry! I made another video for that reason! Sorry I was still learning then how to include music in a video! The link to the same video with a voice over is below. I have changed my ways due to feedback! Thanks! Cheers scott
Good job for a first time. I’ve adapted my landscapes to Lena’s technique and am so amazed with it. Check it out at Barbaratibbetsart.com. Have fun with it Scott!
Hi Diane! I'm sorry about that I don't put music over the top of my voice any more so I have learnt! Due to many people asking about this video I did a voice over of this exact video. Here is the link. Hope this is better for you. Cheers Scott ua-cam.com/video/X7q7R1OPzk4/v-deo.html
Could you please turn off the background music? It is so loud I cannot make out your instructions. Also please enunciate your words more distinctly. I would truly like to learn your methods. .
Hi Eloise, I agree! I’ve decided to ditch mid roll adds from the videos! I think I got excited about being able to make some money! I use Winsor and Newton artist quality watercolours mainly because I have always used them and so I really know how they behave on the page etc. For this painting I used a sheet of Rives BFK I think but it could even work better with other cold pressed watercolour papers that have a bit more sizing. Good luck! Cheers Scott
good evening, what colors did you use?
Beautiful! Love it! What watercolor paint did u use in this video??
Hi Francisca, I mostly used winsor and newton artist quality paints but I think one of the tubes of paint was another brand like HCW? Thanks for watching. Pretty cool process and end result! 👍🙏
the music is too loud, it's very difficult to hear what you are saying. That being said, this is a wonderful technique
Hi Sasha, I made another video with a voice over. Check it out!

Excellent Scott! May I ask for the specific paper you used?
Hi Adam, I used Rives BFK etching paper by Arches but you could use any paper like a cold pressed, medium, Arches watercolour paper and it would work out totally fine. In fact I think that type of paper would work better as it is not as soft and so would cope better with the volume of water. Good luck. 😀
Thank you Scott for the prompt reply. If inspired, please post more like this, very impressive piece.
No worries! There are a few videos in abstract play list that are similar. I will definitely keep doing some paintings like this! Thanks for watching! 👍🙏
Me too. And ir possible, the legend in english. I can't understand your accent. Thank you.
Hi Dalva! No worries! Will change the settings do you can access the subtitles! 👍👍
Beautiful. Can you tell me what paper you used please?
Hi Lorna, thanks! I use Rives BFK etching paper 280gsm white by Arches. It is made in France. Cheers Scott
Thank you 👍
dopeeee
Pretty psychedelic! 👍
I liked it an wanna try something similar for a competition. I am a beginner, please advise can I do it on canvas
Hi puspanjali, you can do something similar on watercolour canvas or paint on a watercolour ground onto a normal primed canvas. It will not be the same as paper but will be similar. I will be making a video soon on painting watercolour onto paper then varnishing then attaching to canvas. Good luck! 👍🙏🇦🇺
@@ScottSwinson thank you so much for your piece of advice. 🙏❤️🇮🇳
No worries! 👍
Some of your paintings make me think of Zdzislaw Beksinski's, even though his are oils. Just really dramatic and interesting.
Thanks Shannon, will have to look that artist up! I also love string oil abstract landscapes. There is a Tasmanian painter Geoffrey Dyer who I just love! Thanks for watching! 👍🙏
What paper do you use?
Hi Nichola, I used rives bfk etching paper by arches but you could use watercolour paper like arches medium cold pressed 300gsm. Good luck! 👍
Many thanks for your reply. I just can't seem to achieve the fantastic visuals that you can in your tutorial, but then that may be down to your talent and not just my excuse of using poor quality paper. 😂
I think quality of paints and paper do play a part! I’m sure you have great talent! 👍
Thank you. Interesting. The music seems unnecessary- I can hardly hear your soft voice at times.
Thanks Jocelyn! Glad you liked it! Someone gave me similar feedback ages ago about this video and so I recorded a voice over. Here is the link. Happy painting! ua-cam.com/video/X7q7R1OPzk4/v-deo.html

❤️❤️❤️
Love your work, Scott, but PLEASE lose the background music! I could barely hear you;-(
Hi Erika! I know! I made this video again with a voice over because of that! here is the link. Cheers Scott

@@ScottSwinson Super! I'm heading over there right now.
Great painting but not sure why artists feel they have to have intrusive music that only drowns the voice over.
Thanks John or Jen! For me it’s because music and painting go together. They always have for me. This video was RE-recorded with a voice over that one of my subscribers requested in a polite way. The link is below. Cheers Scott

@@ScottSwinson Cheers Scott. Thanks for that.
👌💕
Thanks! One of my favourites!
@@ScottSwinson That would be great Scott, as I really love the painting styke in your video. A big thanks for doing this.
Hi John, this is trickier than I thought. My dialogue is joined with the music in the saved apple prores 422 file so it’s going to take me a few days to figure this out! Sorry thought I’d be able to do it quickly tonight and upload! Will let you know when I do. Cheers Scott.
@@ScottSwinson No Problem Scott, it's good of you to try! John
Hi John, just thought I'd let you know I just published that video with voice over. Hope that works for you!
Cheers Scott
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽🙏
thanks! I loved doing this painting as it will always be the first one I did in that style!
Very difficult to hear what you are saying as the music is so loud.
Hi Kerry! I made another video for that reason! Sorry I was still learning then how to include music in a video! The link to the same video with a voice over is below. I have changed my ways due to feedback! Thanks! Cheers scott

Hi Sheila! I know! I recorded another one with a voice over for that reason. Link below. 👍🙏

Thankyou so much for replying, love your work by the way!
Good job for a first time. I’ve adapted my landscapes to Lena’s technique and am so amazed with it. Check it out at Barbaratibbetsart.com. Have fun with it Scott!
Hi Barbara, really great work! I love the abstracts with a small number of colours! Really nice! Happy painting!
I would like to hear what you are saying, but I can't over the music.
Hi Diane! I'm sorry about that I don't put music over the top of my voice any more so I have learnt! Due to many people asking about this video I did a voice over of this exact video. Here is the link. Hope this is better for you. Cheers Scott

Could you please turn off the background music? It is so loud I cannot make out your instructions. Also please enunciate your words more distinctly. I would truly like to learn your methods.
.
Hi Helen. I did this video again with a voice over. The link is below. Cheers Scott

@@ScottSwinson Thank you.
No worries! 👍👍
the ads fuck this the hell up. great work though.
Hi Eloise, I agree! I’ve decided to ditch mid roll adds from the videos! I think I got excited about being able to make some money! I would really Like to reduce my day job and gradually replace with painting but will have to think a bit more long term about that and keep serving you guys! Appreciate the honesty! 👍
annoying and distracting music
Hi Peter! I know! Sorry about that! I RE-recorded the video with a voice over due to it being really bad! The link is below! 👍👍
