Battery Amp vs Full-Sized Shootout. Can Rob and Lee tell the difference between a real 5150 or Marshall Stack and their mini battery-powered versions? Seriously though I'd love to see that just for fun value.
I have a blackstar fly 3 and as a uni student who travells back and forth from home to uni in a different city, blackstar is so good. the tones I'm getting out of it are magnificent. i put a boss ds1 petal before it and put the gain around 9-10 o'clock and it's magnificent. only downside is, you can't have a sound without giving it a bit gain.
I absolutely LOVE my Fly 3. That thing's friggin amazing, especially considering cost and size, AND it's been out for THREE YEARS now. NOTHING could touch it for basically that entire time. Super impressive.
The Orange Micro Crush fits perfectly on the CD shelf in my office and is a cute conversation piece. I've got a power supply for it as I found just playing from batteries gave it less oompf. It's definitely given me more than $100 CAD worth of smiles.
I ended up buying a Katana Mini, and I am quite happy with it. Small, versatile, relatively cheap, perfect for late night bedroom practice. I hesitated between the Katana Mini and the Katana 50 Combo, the Mini won in the end, because I knew the 50 would've been wasted on me (Never ever would've used the extra power, or features)
As a fellow owner of a blackstar fly 3, I gotta say that this is a rather fair representation, actually. Don't get me wrong, it's an awesome little box for when you just wanna plug into something quickly and jam out, and it's waaaaaay better than the other mini amps. Hell, I'd say that it's even better than that old 10w Ibanez amp I used to have when I just started out. However, it does seem like the katana mini is just doing it somewhat better. I'll have to try one for myself and compare the two, just for fun.
not quite twice. Boss Katana Mini 99 usd. Blackstar Fly 3 60 usd. Although, for 99 bucks you can buy several small combo amps all of which would probably be better for small room practicing. Line6 Spider 15 or even a Blackstar CoreID 10

I want to get that Marshall and use it as a speaker for music. It's adorable. Actually, all of them are...except that Katana...that's a proper mini amp, god damn
Got a Fly3, great for a little portable amp for mini jam sessions. Plus it has a in built delay which is cool. Unfortunately I got the first model so it doesn't have Bluetooth, but is in a cool cream colour.

My theory without knowing much about these amps is that the reason the Fly 3 sounds great and the rest sound terrible is that the rest are built like just any other amplifier but less of it, but the Fly 3 I'm guessing is built in a completely different way more like a Bluetooth speaker with modeled amp sound running into it.
Been using a Blackstar Fly3 for a few weeks now and I LOVE this thing. I travel every week and take it in my backpack with a cable (among all my other personal and work stuff. Throw a few pedals in my checked bag. It’s very portable and sounds amazing! Also, the batteries are still going strong. Just ordered a 6v power cable for like 13$ on Amazon
I'm a proud owner of a little BlackStar fly3, and in regards to the powering "issue" mentioned in this video; it is not an issue. The batteries last almost forever!
Blackstar with the extension cab is what I'm listening to this vid on, plugged into my laptop. When you plug into the phono input, they make a great pair powered speaker..completely bypasses the pre, nice and clean line level. For jamming along with stuff on youtube, or itunes..brilliant. I bought the Fly a few weeks back. I was aware of the Katana and had seen demos when I bought the Fly. While the Katana is undeniably better purely as a mini amp, certain key features drew me to the Blackstar instead. Once you add the extension cab to the Fly, not only do you get stereo delay (which is a cool effect), it will also double up as portable laptop/tablet/phone speakers with proper stereo separation. In situations where space is at a premium, I can leave the extension cab at home and just take the main unit. The problem I have with the Katana is its size. If I need something small and portable, the Fly is a good size. If I need more volume than the Fly can provide, I'd be looking for a larger amp than the Katana Mini. It sits smack bang in the middle of two different use case scenarios and I personally think it would be a compromise for each of them.
I have the Blackstar and as a guitar teacher I use it every day around my students' houses. It's a brilliant amp with excellent battery life. Can't say anything bad about it. However, if I'd heard about the Katana when I was looking for a small amp, I'd have definitely gone for it...
I own the Katana mini, it's great. I need something tiny that I could take to work on a plane in my rucksack (which hasn't much space) and sounds descent. It's so useful as a practice amp.

Thanks guys. Based on this video, I picked up a Fly 3 on Black Friday. The video doesn’t do it justice IMO. Sounds fantastic for what it is. The Boss is better, but for $100, I’d get a Blackstar ID:Core 10 watt.
you guys should check out the video philip mcknight did were he hooked up the evh to a 4x12 cab by adding a speaker output, maybe you could revisit these with a cab mod?
I have the fly and i think it actually sounds awesome for what it is. Compared to the other plastic boxes of broken sounds it has a good full gain sound
I've seen a few people mod a speaker-out onto the Fly 3. It sounds amazing. Since the actual amp is 6W (it is limited to 3W by the single small speaker), it's actually pretty loud too.
I think the Fender actually kind of does a respectable, 60s, ripped speaker or dying battery thing that worked well with Rob's 70s funk riff. The Blackstar Fly plus its extension speaker actually make great computer speakers as well as a nice practice amp.
And you can even get a cute little cabinet to go with them! Love my AC30 amplug - doesn't sound that much like an AC30 but it's still amazing considering its size.
I agree they should have demoed them in the video. I always use them (I have Ac30, metal, Satriani, and both bass models) more than my Orange Micro crush, Marshall MS-4 (I have the Zakk Wylde model for decoration), and my Fly-3.
I love my amplugs, they are small, cheap and portable. However I don't think they sound great, compared to my marshall mg30cfx. I would say that they are worth thr money though
I have one of those Marshall half stacks, I bought it because I thought it was funny, I find it to be useful as a bench amp, where I keep it on my work bench while I work on my guitars. That way I can just plug and play. It’s a good use for it.
I just came across this video. Loved it. Missing for the "novelty amps", were some 6-inch 3D printer dolls of Chappers and Cap'n (may I call you "Cap'n?) headbanging in front of the Marshall nano-stack. Loved it. --- While I'm at it, the video of the "singing" Japanese anime pedal, I wonder what it would have sounded like following a Wah-Wah pedal (or into such). Carry on, guys.
It's not even clipping. I own one of the Marshall ones. They just have such a terrible 'preamp' (if you can even call it that) that they always sound miserably fuzzy

The feedback from the Marshall sounds like a truck backing up..
That Boss amp sounds really sweet. Very nice practice amp!
I had hoped to see the Roland cube. I love that carry around!
Thanks guys. Based on this video, I picked up a Fly 3 on Black Friday. The video doesn’t do it justice IMO. Sounds fantastic for what it is. The Boss is better, but for $100, I’d get a Blackstar ID:Core 10 watt.
you guys should check out the video philip mcknight did were he hooked up the evh to a 4x12 cab by adding a speaker output, maybe you could revisit these with a cab mod?
i was looking for a video like this for two days straight
finally a comparison of all the runt amps
Funniest video in a long time. I died laughing at Lee's feedback TOANS.
I have the fly and i think it actually sounds awesome for what it is. Compared to the other plastic boxes of broken sounds it has a good full gain sound
Perfect black metal rig!
I have a Blackstar and it is a phenomenal little practice amp.
What about trying to plug one of these into a 4x12
Don't get mad at me this is just a joke
Phil McKnight ran a 5150 battery amp into a proper cab.
I tried running the 5150 into my 2x12. It barely drove the speakers, and was actually quieter than running through its own speaker.
You can mod the Marshall MS2 and mod the Headphone out. Friggin loud and sounds pretty damn good into a 2x12 with V30s. Not shitting you!
I've seen a few people mod a speaker-out onto the Fly 3. It sounds amazing. Since the actual amp is 6W (it is limited to 3W by the single small speaker), it's actually pretty loud too.
David Thayer it normally sounds pretty good actually, these tiny amps are mainly limited by there tiny speakers
I think the Fender actually kind of does a respectable, 60s, ripped speaker or dying battery thing that worked well with Rob's 70s funk riff. The Blackstar Fly plus its extension speaker actually make great computer speakers as well as a nice practice amp.
The Marshall feedback had me crying😂😂😂
Great demo! Finally, a video that compares them all. I think all are novelties except for the Katana.
The VOX AMPLUGS sound way better than any of those and are great for practicing. The "Classic Rock" in particular sounds like a tube amp
This. They should have included the Classic Rock and Metal variants with their mini cab.
And you can even get a cute little cabinet to go with them! Love my AC30 amplug - doesn't sound that much like an AC30 but it's still amazing considering its size.
I can testify to that.
Damn. Does that mean that my early '90's vintage Made in Korea Marshall MS-2R isn't worth a fortune then? :-)
Starting at 9:16 feels like I just walked into the Guitar Center… Ha ha ha
Glad you included the katana mini. Sounds amazing! And only 100.
Would it make for a nice birthday gift for somebody who already owns a high end amplifier?
@@da_schnitzel I'd say so.
This video had me crying laughing in class trying to be silent. Thank you capn
That was really helpful. I was looking to get my daughter hooked on my guitar addiction and now I know what little amp to get her.
Still better than Rob's usual tone ;)
Harsh!? Do you have the Fender hooked up to your PC as a speaker?
HAHAHAHAHAHAH
They may be crap, but you're having so much fun! Infectious.
Not all of them are crap.
Can't tell if it's fuzz or just insanely awful clipping. 😂
It's not even clipping. I own one of the Marshall ones. They just have such a terrible 'preamp' (if you can even call it that) that they always sound miserably fuzzy
I've played them all and only the Boss and Blackstar are worth getting. Blackstar would be the best value IMO :) Lol great video, lots of fun.
Put the output of the Boss Katana Mini into a Boss Metal Zone, then into a full sized Boss Katana. Now you're talking about tone.
just bought the katana mini thanks to you guys. lol needed something to practice on without having to yank out the Helix. This will do nicely!
9:15 is like the first band practice I ever went to
