They didn't have that Marshall dialed in right. I bought a Katana but I bought it for the ability to swap out all of the Boss pedals. The Codes I played sounded WAY better than on this demo.
Ya the presets on the marshall aren't great, the one they used was awful, but i honestly thing if dialed in right the marshall would be the best one here.
I personally have a Fender Champ 40, got it used for $119 about a year ago. I agree with the guys and the comments that the clean channel is the best (at least for my tastes). I use this as my practice amp and have played both individual analog pedals and my Line 6 HX through it and I can say with confidence that BOTH types of effects sound wonderful through this amps clean channel so for me the dirty channel lacking is not an issue for me. Played one gig with the amp and had no issue volume/mix wise.
i´m reading all negative commentaries about marshall code.. i´ve got a code 50 and is really powerfull the delay and reverb effects are really professional effects ! so i use it with acoustic guitars too , just pulling down de gain, and sounds fantastic ! despite it has no celestion speakers..
I've got a Champion 100, it's fantastic. I use the jazz voice with low gain as a clean, but the standard clean is incredible. It handles pedals really well too, and it's only £230
Fender for clean to classic rock, Katana for hard rock to extreme genres ... Also Katana has nice acoustic mode ... and when you do small valve amp, pleas pleas pleas add (at least as honorable mention) Laney CAB12 (I actualy tried it in music store and its just amazing in 1 watt mode, esp with P90 or PAF humbucker loaded guitar)
Owned a Champion 100 - LOVED the cleans and the reverb, but nothing else. Sold it and bought a Katana 2-12. Haven't regretted it for one second. It's clean is not quite at the Fender level (although the 'acoustic' setting gets close), but for an all around great sounding amp that does every genre (and effects) really well - the Boss Katana is the way to go.
Top tips for the code: 1. Use the 1912 cab setting. 2. Use a low gain Amp setting with a peddle overdrive setting over it 3. Worn in, they sound amazing
I have a Katana head that I use as a pedal platform. The thing is a monster at 100 watts and good sound in the 0.5 watt for the bedroom. It has a line out as well that I use for a trio plus for looping fun!!
I think it really depends on what "strength" of music your playing and how good of drums you have. If your playing a lighter rock like punk or alt then you dont really need a huge volume you just need it to mix well, but if you do metal or death metal or some straight screamo bs you want a louder sound to match.
@@barnabydelabilliere6740 Many venues have a PA system, so it's more important to find the one that sounds the best, volume is pretty irrelevant to an extent as it will be mic'd and played though the PA. Eric Clapton used the Fender Champion for his Layla cycle.
I would definitely go for the Fender, since it has the nicest clean sounds by orders of magnitude. And for the gain sounds, I (and I guess 90% of you out there) use there preferred pedal combination that we have anyhow...
I think you should do the shoot out and then actually gig with the setup you choose. Put them to the test, I'm sure loads of people would love to see Chappers and the Captain play a few songs live
Hi guys! I personally gig with the Fender Champion 100, two speakers and channel switch pedal take it to the next level. Absolutely cracking amp and recommended in Andertons by Rabbea so cheers for that dude! Really grateful, it has served me well!
RMS or 'root mean squared' is a measure of the average wattage used by the amp. Because we use A.C. power is oscilates back and forth between peak voltages. Rms is just the average between those 2 peaks
I own the Orange 35rt and I love the clean channel. The gain is great until you add to much, for my taste. If I didn’t have the Orange I would go with the Katana. The Code didn’t sound that good to me and even when I tried one I was not impressed with the sound but the app feature is pretty cool. Fender was good on clean but didn’t like the dirty all that much.
I own the Fender Champion 40. The Fender models or voices as they are called sound decent especially the tweed deluxe for high gain. The cleans are the best. I use distortion pedals with mine as I don’t care at all for the British or metal settings. Plenty loud.
The Orange is cool, love the straight forward analog simple controls, unfortunately it doesn't sound worth buying in person. The Code sounds sooo much better when set up properly. It can suffer from a crap ton of settings and I wasn't all that thrilled by the presets. The Fender Champion 50 xl looks really good, but I'm seeing bad stories regarding a reverb issue.
i spent a lot of time tweaking the knobs on my crust 35 when i first got it.... but im happy with the tones i can get out of it after spending time with it. and it sounds better with some of my guitars than others, but that's the nature of gear.
The fender has a great clean and a nice low gain overdrive, but the katana runs it close on both and also has way more versatility in distortions and effects.
better cleans then katana, much better slightly driven/ crunch then katana, but totaly fades at gainy/distorted sound. Orange looks like 2 tricks ponny (if orange sound is your thing, might be perfectly alright) and Marshall looks like something that needs lot of tweaking ...
I love my Champion 40. I’ve been gigging with it for the past 3 years of playing. It’s weird yet amazing that the Champion 40 can compete with all these new amps
Hi Jovan, what style do you play? because im looking for the champion 40 to gig with, but my band plays from punk rock to heavy metal. I would use it on clean with a pedal for distortion. Do you think it would work? Thanks.
The Boss Katana definitely sounded the best to me, great gain and workable cleans. The gain at about three also sounded pretty okay on the Champion to me, though the Katana was still better.
honestly the Plexi amp model on the CODE is spectacular, idk what preset you guys used, but please check out the Plexi preset with the distortion pedal effect in front of it, that tone is easily better than those other amps there.
True. The JCM 800 model also does a really good job. It's the JVM and DSL models that don't do the trick. And I'm fairly sure they used the JVM model in that demo. Sometimes it makes you think they deliberately want the CODE to come across sub par.
Tenkterian I was talking about the "Plexi" setting not the JCM 800, but that one also is quite accurate, i find it is slightly muddier than the plexi one.
Robert Cuff I know, that's why I wrote "also". ;) But you're right, the Plexi model is great. Basically all vintage style preamps on board are quite spot on. It's the modern, gainy ones that sound a bit cheap.
Tenkterian oh lol i'm sorry i read that wrong, ya i use the JCM 800 setting for Tom Morello songs and it sounds spot on. but the plexi setting is so great for classic marshall stuff like AC/DC but if you turn up the gain a little, you would be surprised how close i got it to Adam Jones' Tone from Tool
Recently, this afternoon, i play with the Orange and Fender in a local shop. This Orange is really BIG. The Fender is so loud but the dirt channel is weak. Now, I think that i can gig with Orange Crush 20rt.
Personally, I really like the Orange crush 35rt. However I also like the fender. I'm not a fan of the boss amplifier or the marshall. The best amplifiers on the market in my opinion are the following: Fender champion amplifiers, Orange crush amplifiers, Marshall MG amplifiers, And Blackstar HT1 and HT5.
Root Mean Square is a way of talking about an 'average' performance vs a peak value. The idea behind using the RMS is that taking square root of the average deviation squared is more computationally tractable than finding the average of the absolute values.
Rob kept the magic PRS 594 with the Red Grey finish (dunno the official name). He was playing it on his youtube channel and said he was keeping it for his son's 18th birthday then started laughing maniacally...dunno why :P
I gig with my Katana 100 1x12 combo. It's plenty loud especially considering we mic our amplifiers. Most venues mic amps. I stopped lugging around my heavy Marshall DSL in favor of the Katana for my cover band. I still use my Marshall DSL for my original band.
I have the VOX VT40X and it's actually pretty cool. It's a nice modelling amp that's loud enough for small gigs. The additional footswitch helps a lot.
Picked up my Katana 100 (with the foot controller and a couple of expression pedals) just the other day. Haven't had a chance to really dig into it, but it can most definitely get VERY loud while still being capable of practice-level volumes in the home.
For a final "home use" video you could use full valve amps with a volume control in the effects loop. I use a hot rod deluxe with a vein-tap leech in the loop - works great. i have a Blackstar ID but I agree with Lee that it sounds fizzy when turned up.
I've got the orange 35rt as a practice amp and love its clean channel, I think that spanky voxy tone had to do more with your guitar than with the amp, I've always got more like a fender sound (but not exactly) and I love all orange's clean channel they have an special tasty sound in my opinion
I own an orange crush 35rt, and I do agree the clean channel is a bit bland. I use an MXR Custom Compressor on it though, and it sounds absolutely brilliant, really is night and day.
Fellas, to demo the ability of these amps to keep up in a “gig” setting, why not run a drum & bass backtrack at volume (or have guys playing live?). then play the amps against it to demonstrate.
Sweet video. My first ever guitar i had i got in 2007 in the 6th grade and it was a squire along with my first amp which was a cheapo practice amp and it was a kustom KGA10
Great video guys! I personally use the fender champion 40, and I have giged with it. I do like 1 or 2 of the gain side amp settings (mostly the blackface), but I mainly use the clean side with a tube screamer. I love the built in fx, I use the delay+reverb setting set on around 4-5. Great amp for the buck!! I have been thinking about getting the boss katana, but I'm very happy with my champion 40
For the "desktop amp," the Katana to pick wouldn't be the Katana 50, but the Katana Head. Desktop size. Built in speaker. USB/line out/effects loop/headphones/MIDI. Can use it at 0.5W for desktop/home, but it also goes up to 100W, so you could hook it up to a cab and gig with it, if you wanted.
I bought a used red stripe about 2 years ago without really knowing anything about amps at the time, was only when I started jamming with other people I realised what a gem I'd gotten my hands on :)
Had an almost brand new latest-gen Bandit shipped to my door for ~160 bucks. Played it for a year, that was a beast of a gig-worthy amp. Sounded phenomenal by itself or with pedals... And when I sold it, I got 160 back out of it. One of the best amps I've ever owned, and I would own one again one day.
I’m not sure this would fit with the purpose of your channel, but I would love to see a shoot out of amps that are commonly available in the used market. When I cruise craigslist I see a lot of Peavey (a lot) line 6 and older Fender amps. Would be cool to know what the good finds, bargains and steals would be among those.
Good, fair, & entertaining review. I agree that the newer Fender Champs tend to "mud" & "fizz" up with much gain, though still a decent, clean platform for pedals. The older Champs, with real Celestion speakers, had much better definition, dynamics, & musical tone. I'd buy an older one with Celestions & never look back, but if You play one from the last year that came stock with Celestions right next to the first year that came stock with in-house speaker, both with the same, exact circuitry, it's NOT "apples & oranges" different, it's "bananas & potatoes" different. Most people will tell You it's not worth putting a Celestion upgrade into a $350 amp, rather buy a better amp, however, then You're getting an amp that's still not performing to it's potential, as it, also, will most likely have crappy, no-name speakers. I'd be willing to bet if You went ahead & did the upgrade, You'd have a great amp & still be under the amount You'd pay for a better amp. Example: Great guitar head + crappy speaker = crappy sound. Cheap guitar head + good speakers = much better sound. Tried a Mesa Rec through B52 cab = Crappy, fizzy, mud. B52 AT head + Marshall 1960 cab = You'd never believe it was a & $400 head, sounds more like a Mesa than the Mesa did through crappy speakers. Without decent speakers, Your amp will never perform to it's full potential. I don't understand why manufactures don't just put decent speakers in all their amps & just charge a little more. Same with guitar pickups.
Every time I see a Katana review I doubt my own amp choice but then I plug my little Blackstar HTR1 in and it reminds me why I picked it. Not loud enough to gig with, maybe the HT5 would fit that bill, but that single watt tube makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside.
What about the trusted Fender blues Jnr 3. DT25 line 6 which I have in my lounge room plus the bedroom mode. But good video. But the orange sounds great.
Andertons Music Co I've seen both amps run for 300-400 dollars used. Sure, it's a bit more expensive than the amps in the video but it's still affordable.

ky99999999 way too much bass I though for the Marshall...
Yep, Marshall sounded like crap. I wonder how would it sound with that PRS though.
They didn't have that Marshall dialed in right. I bought a Katana but I bought it for the ability to swap out all of the Boss pedals. The Codes I played sounded WAY better than on this demo.
Hated the code I owned. Not only the sound, but the functionality is terrible. I hated the way it has you manipulate EQ and presets.
Ya the presets on the marshall aren't great, the one they used was awful, but i honestly thing if dialed in right the marshall would be the best one here.
I'm sorry rob but I'm pretty sure the katana 50 has a 12 inch speaker not a 10
no it's 10
No, it's a 12. From Sweetwater's site:
Tech Specs
Type: Solid State
Number of Channels: 2
Total Power: 50W/25W/0.5W
Speaker Size: 1 x 12"
Reverb: Yes
Its 12. Looking at mine right now!!
There are 2 versions with the 10" being cheapest
Definitely only comes in a 12
Is me or Rob looking like he going to do darts match for Andertons
I personally have a Fender Champ 40, got it used for $119 about a year ago. I agree with the guys and the comments that the clean channel is the best (at least for my tastes). I use this as my practice amp and have played both individual analog pedals and my Line 6 HX through it and I can say with confidence that BOTH types of effects sound wonderful through this amps clean channel so for me the dirty channel lacking is not an issue for me. Played one gig with the amp and had no issue volume/mix wise.
love these honest videos! that's why i go to this channel and order from this store
i´m reading all negative commentaries about marshall code..
i´ve got a code 50 and is really powerfull
the delay and reverb effects are really professional effects !
so i use it with acoustic guitars too , just pulling down de gain, and sounds fantastic !
despite it has no celestion speakers..
Oh yeah orange can get loud. I have pretty much that exact amp. I have the 35RT and it'a dirty tone is loud!
I've got a Champion 100, it's fantastic. I use the jazz voice with low gain as a clean, but the standard clean is incredible. It handles pedals really well too, and it's only £230
Dave Simpson demos the Orange Crush series the best.
LeJarrett yep. I just got one and it's amazing.
Katana 50 in the post! So excited as it's my first amp over 15 Watts and the first time I'll ever use reverb!
Fender for clean to classic rock, Katana for hard rock to extreme genres ... Also Katana has nice acoustic mode ...
and when you do small valve amp, pleas pleas pleas add (at least as honorable mention) Laney CAB12 (I actualy tried it in music store and its just amazing in 1 watt mode, esp with P90 or PAF humbucker loaded guitar)
stanislavmigra run an epiphone ultra 3 through the katana. The piezo really likes The Katana acoustic setting. The buckers love the electric setting.
Fender amp and gretsch semi hollow guitar
MIM are great on the budget, cant go wrong here ...
Love the editing on these vids you guys are hilarious and very informative at the same time. Rock on fellas
Top tips for the code:
1. Use the 1912 cab setting.
2. Use a low gain Amp setting with a peddle overdrive setting over it
3. Worn in, they sound amazing
I have the katana 50 and it's amazing.
Justin Roman Do you recommend katana or marshall code?
Hemolia Liz Katana 50
I have a Katana head that I use as a pedal platform. The thing is a monster at 100 watts and good sound in the 0.5 watt for the bedroom. It has a line out as well that I use for a trio plus for looping fun!!
Why does every guitar player grossly overestimate the volume they need to gig?
As someone looking into getting their first (decent) amp and guitar, how much have they overestimated it by in your opinion?
barnaby de la billiere I’d say a good amount, if you mic up the amp you really just need anything with a great tone but I’m no expert
Ego, that's why. Guitarists want to be heard, and god forbid the drummer is louder than you.
I've used a Vox Classic Rock headphone amp at a gig. Delay, reverb, chorus, and three channels. Plugged straight into the board. Sounded great.
I have truly enjoyed watching the Ol Captain become quite the guitar player over the last 3 years. Puttin work in SON!..
Looking good in that andertons shirt chappers!
disgracedstormtrooper you could literally say that for any video
I own the Fender Champion 40. The Fender models or voices as they are called sound decent especially the tweed deluxe for high gain. The cleans are the best. I use distortion pedals with mine as I don’t care at all for the British or metal settings. Plenty loud.
So where can i buy on of those Josh's? Seems pretty usefull
Interesting to see Lee is getting better and better...love his bluesy approach to guitar playing.
The editing in these videos are just the best. That poof, the classic shattering glass mugs...gotta love it.
Surprisingly I like the fender most....
Kai Fischer
Fender guitars are my absolute favorite, but not Fender amps.
fender amps have the best cleans ever. so smooth and resonant
The fender has a great clean and a nice low gain overdrive, but the katana runs it close on both and also has way more versatility in distortions and effects.
I’d probably go with the Fender if it pairs well with multieffects...
better cleans then katana, much better slightly driven/ crunch then katana, but totaly fades at gainy/distorted sound. Orange looks like 2 tricks ponny (if orange sound is your thing, might be perfectly alright) and Marshall looks like something that needs lot of tweaking ...
I have the Fender Champion 40 and I just have a really lush clean tone with a DS-1 and it sounds killer when I play live
On the other side, I really like the sound of 10" speakers, less muddy than most of the 12".
Thanks.
I would go for the Boss katana 50 💜
The Boss Katana definitely sounded the best to me, great gain and workable cleans. The gain at about three also sounded pretty okay on the Champion to me, though the Katana was still better.
honestly the Plexi amp model on the CODE is spectacular, idk what preset you guys used, but please check out the Plexi preset with the distortion pedal effect in front of it, that tone is easily better than those other amps there.
Robert Cuff The jvm clean really surprised me as well.
Also, make a video about 4 affordable tube amps for gigging as well.
Pick up a USA made '90s Peavey Studio Pro 112 dirt cheap and fantastic
Personally,
I really like the Orange crush 35rt.
However I also like the fender.
I'm not a fan of the boss amplifier or the marshall.
The best amplifiers on the market in my opinion are the following:
Fender champion amplifiers,
Orange crush amplifiers,
Marshall MG amplifiers,
And Blackstar HT1 and HT5.
Root Mean Square is a way of talking about an 'average' performance vs a peak value.
The idea behind using the RMS is that taking square root of the average deviation squared is more computationally tractable than finding the average of the absolute values.
Great vid guys! I wonder if Rob kept that magic PRS 594. Love that 594 he has here and obviously Lee is enjoying that CAP10!
Marcus Hogan Its a McCarty I have the same guitar with different color and ebony fretboard on my page.
Sorry you're right my mistake
Marcus Hogan All good man you should really play one it's the best guitar I've ever owned hands down.
Rob kept the magic PRS 594 with the Red Grey finish (dunno the official name). He was playing it on his youtube channel and said he was keeping it for his son's 18th birthday then started laughing maniacally...dunno why :P
DeathPandaDanceParty what if his son hates the prs?
I gig with my Katana 100 1x12 combo. It's plenty loud especially considering we mic our amplifiers. Most venues mic amps. I stopped lugging around my heavy Marshall DSL in favor of the Katana for my cover band. I still use my Marshall DSL for my original band.
Gain of tones? You guys are just hilarious!
I have the VOX VT40X and it's actually pretty cool. It's a nice modelling amp that's loud enough for small gigs. The additional footswitch helps a lot.
You guys should do a challenge where you go through Andertons and select your dream rig! no restrictions!(money wise)
Picked up my Katana 100 (with the foot controller and a couple of expression pedals) just the other day. Haven't had a chance to really dig into it, but it can most definitely get VERY loud while still being capable of practice-level volumes in the home.
Could you guys do a most expensive Squier vs cheapest Fender shootout, strats and teles?
Mish Bayoumi they did that with teles a month ago
Cool, i must have missed that one. Have they done Strats?
yup
For a final "home use" video you could use full valve amps with a volume control in the effects loop. I use a hot rod deluxe with a vein-tap leech in the loop - works great. i have a Blackstar ID but I agree with Lee that it sounds fizzy when turned up.
Can't wait for the home use valve amps review!
Agreed, this is what i'm looking forward to. Shootout with the Blackstar and marshall 5's (and whatever else is good at that price range?)
boymcgee Fender Bassbreaker 7w is also a good choice. And rumor says Marshall is going to release some new valve amps soon.
oRaNgE mIcRo DaRk
Bugera 5w! I just run nine through a 1×12 cab
I've got the orange 35rt as a practice amp and love its clean channel, I think that spanky voxy tone had to do more with your guitar than with the amp, I've always got more like a fender sound (but not exactly) and I love all orange's clean channel they have an special tasty sound in my opinion
Good critical review, cheers
I own an orange crush 35rt, and I do agree the clean channel is a bit bland. I use an MXR Custom Compressor on it though, and it sounds absolutely brilliant, really is night and day.
Fellas, to demo the ability of these amps to keep up in a “gig” setting, why not run a drum & bass backtrack at volume (or have guys playing live?). then play the amps against it to demonstrate.
I have an orange c35rt and gig with its clean channel all the time, and it works just fine.
"Gain of tones" I actually lolled
Me to.
Sweet video. My first ever guitar i had i got in 2007 in the 6th grade and it was a squire along with my first amp which was a cheapo practice amp and it was a kustom KGA10
I want a Cap 10. Candy Apple Red, with no pickguard.
Some really tasty playing in this vid, especially Lee's little repeating riff around 16:30 -NOICE.
#1 Orange
#2 Fender
#3 Boss
# Marshall
In order of preference: 1. Fender 2. Boss 3. Orange 4. Marshall
Did Lee say “Gain of Tones”?!
that was on the spot too, that was brilliant!
I have been thinking about getting the boss katana, but I'm very happy with my champion 40
how well does it handle pedals? i’m thinking of getting one myself
Team katana. Vote👈
Hell yeah ! i got one ;) go team katana
100watter checking in. Love it to bits.
Haha same awesome ^^
The Boss Katana and the Zoom G3Xn. The ultimate bedroom goofing around set-up.
Sorry to shit the bed, but I hated it. I bought a Revv Generator instead. Much, much better.
I'd rather buy a used Peavey Bandit.
I bought a used red stripe about 2 years ago without really knowing anything about amps at the time, was only when I started jamming with other people I realised what a gem I'd gotten my hands on :)
Yup
Shhhhh.. don't jack the prices up. 😜
I gigged with a 10 watt Peavey TransTube amp once. it could easily be heard over the drums and everyone liked it.
You guys should do a sounds like Tom Petty, like so they can see!
I ordered a BOSS Katana 100W today. Can't wait to plug in my Fender elite tele tomorrow and shred it up :)
"Trying to keep this affordable" uses PRS 594.
It's a McCarthy 22, but your point remains valid
Roland cube????
Was discontinued when Katana came out.
Ah.
Wait... Really?
Every time I see a Katana review I doubt my own amp choice but then I plug my little Blackstar HTR1 in and it reminds me why I picked it. Not loud enough to gig with, maybe the HT5 would fit that bill, but that single watt tube makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside.
Marshall was by far the worst sounding.
like glenn fricker said, i would rather have 1 good tone than 50 shit ones
Honestly I like the fender champion 40
@@dissapointmint7204 agreed. New Champion 50xl looks better too.
I have the code 50 and it sounds waaaaay better in real life
i have the fender champion 20 and it sounds pretty good for 100 usd i put a boss ds1 in front of it to give the metal channel a boost.
i got a fender champion 40 2 years ago and I love it.
What about the trusted Fender blues Jnr 3. DT25 line 6 which I have in my lounge room plus the bedroom mode. But good video. But the orange sounds great.
None of those are "cheap"!
Andertons Music Co I've seen both amps run for 300-400 dollars used. Sure, it's a bit more expensive than the amps in the video but it's still affordable.
Si hubiera visto este video antes de los 200 foros de guitarrista que tuve que leer me hubiera ahorrado mucho trabajo, excelente video!! CONGRATS!!
