Tom Petty's death hit me as hard as John Lennon's. I still think about him every day. Some people say it's weird to grieve over a celebrity's death, but Tom wasn't just a celebrity. He was a poet, an artist and a deeply human and humble person. That's a rare combo.
What a poignant, beautiful song, performed with that extraordinary combination of heart and skill that makes every TP and Heartbreakers song a masterpiece. The world is a sadder place without him.
God I miss Tom. His whole catalog is great, but a few of his tunes are simply the soundtrack to my life. I feel like he mostly wrote songs about down-and-out characters - but those occassions when he wrote about himself, it seemed like he cracked his heart open for all of us to peer inside. This is one of those songs, and it continues to support me through times of anxiety and heartbreak. I guess they really were Heartbreakers. RIP Tom.
This is so beautiful, yet so hard for me to watch. To me, it showed just how much pain he was in at that time. I know the face of pain, both physical and emotional. Yet, he played for us. He continued to give us his very heart and soul, no matter how much it cost him. How could anyone not love Tommy?
Tom was a man who we could all learn many lessons from. His soul, his ability to realize the gift of songwriting. He also knew that a gift needed to be nurtured and continued to work on the craft. A perfectionist who knew it would never be achieved but not afraid to keep trying. That is why his music and his soul will go"on into forever"
For me, the song will always be about addiction, getting lost and forgetting what's important in life. But there's a hopeful tone in that the narrator seems to be in recovery.
Is there anything better than getting completely consumed by Tom Petty? When you dive in to his music, the next thing you know it's been 2 weeks and you've had a Tom Petty song that suits any situation you're in. The soundtrack to your life. Long live the memory and music of Tom Petty. Thanks for everything. ❤️
I sang this wonderful song, at my wedding, on the Miami beach, directly to my second bride. Thanks Tom, for this and so many other ones. Brilliant words.

Pure beauty. Just plain pure beauty.
This was from his 3rd and final solo album. What a brilliant lyricist we will never have again.
