Excellent, accurate video of how to properly use a waiter's corkscrew. I had no problem hearing the audio or understanding what was said. Your attention to technical detail in the explanation was excellent.
Thank you for a straightforward demonstration of the RIGHT way to do it - very professional, with no jokes, and NOT a demonstration of how to do it wrong. Yes, I watched a few UA-cam videos before I found this one. The best.
Fantastic demonstration! Watching these videos has really shown me how lazy I have become, even though I am often opening super-premium bottles tableside. Thank you, sir!
I want to thank Miss Kerr, my high school years for teaching us how to open a bottle of wine. Only teach not taste. Who knew I'd still have this knowledge.
“A nice clean cut.” Easy enough with your “somm only” corkscrew. Blades on consumer corkscrews are sold dull or serrated. Both result in the cap being shredded instead of cut.
Andrew Yarosh Bullshit. I’ve had great cuts with $5.99 corkscrews. That said, if you’re into wine invest in a nice Chateau Laguiole or Aubrac corkscrew. Made in France, classic, you can pick your handle material and you now have a classy corkscrew that you can hand down to your kids. You can find them for $150 on sale. Only one you will ever need. Worth every penny.
@@DWilliam1 Well good for you, but I haven’t. And I’ve handled Laguiole, etc. with the same result. So how about coming up with practical (i.e. not $150 advice) instead of immediately going to bullying.
@@andrewyarosh1809 Bullying? What are you a millennial? Despite the comment being made 3 years ago, the advice is the same. Go find a decent $5-$10 corkscrew. Many wineries sell them for the cheap to advertise their winery. They are solid and work well. Other than that, work on your technique. You need to use a bit of steady force when cutting the foil. Either that or stick with twist offs. Hope your Holidays went well.
I have been doing this wrong my whole life! Like my mind is totally blown right now!! Can I say you are my hero???!!! Also, your presence and aura is really calming. You should keep doing videos. Thank you so much for thinking to make this!
@@Mooseman327 I got the screw in part right but was basically just trying to pull it out, while it was in the T position. It hurt the hand so I just resorted to pushing the cork inside the bottle or using a winged corkscrew. I just never learned how to actually use it.
Why am I watching this? So I know if I need to fire my butler. He told me half the bottle needed to be poured off because of the floating cork. I wonder what he did with the discarded half.
Ugh the only reason I looked this up is because I coil it way too much and the wine ends up with all of this stuff inside of it from that thing. I'm so glad I saw it
Keep in mind .... there are 5 coils in the wine opener's "worm". When you screw it to the 4 coil, it won't penetrate all the way through the cork .... and get flecks of stuff in the wine. Also, the hinge will seat better on the edge/lip of the bottle.
You should be wiping the top of the bottle with a serviette after removing the tip of the capsule and again after removing the cork according to the official Court of Master Sommeliers wine service guide.
You're not wrong for pulling off the foil, but cutting the foil is really all about tradition for many wine connoisseurs. Originally, wine bottles were sealed with wax, which was much easier and less messy to cut off the bottle. Once foiled bottles became a thing, popular opinion was to cut off the top, to preserve the winemaker's bottle design.
check out the ones from a company called HiCoup. They are top notch, thats what I use now and they are sooo smooth they are, they are definitely worth the little bit more imho. Sturdy and makes opening corks an absolute breeze. I found a special for 20 bucks for the light brown colour. My knife work still needs some work, but I'm working on it
You can break through the cork leaving debris in the wine. You can go in at an angle breaking up the cork leaving more debris in the wine You can go to shallow into the cork, breaking off the top and having to remove what's left. A bit more tricky. You an actually snap the neck of the bottle by pushing the corkscrew hard up and across instead of encouraging it to pull straight up. So the wine will probably taste fine but just take longer to serve!
A thumbs up for the information imparted, but a thumbs down for the production. OK, this is a 5 year old video, but... mic the talent! Suppress the room echo, enhanced by the hard bar, with at least a table cloth to soften the sound. The "radio in the background" is the audio equivalent of a bit of cork in a glass. A bit of effort with lighting, and a thought to visual composition, add to the "yes, we care" feel. Whether it's food, drink, or video - presentation is everything.
Alen Luzajic You are NOT supposed to put the bottle on the table when opening it. And he didnt really rotate the bottle it was slighty moving when its supposed to not rotate at all. Ill give him a 9 out of 10.
this video was poorly filmed, and takes away from the lesson. especially when he first puts in the cork. thumbs down due to poor filming and editing. its a double hinged wine key.
I'm really sry your missing to wipe the bottle mit with a clean napkin. Cause dust can still enter after opening. When you took the plastic or the seal in top you have to wipe it again with another clean napkin and at the end when you pulled the peg out. At that time you served to the customer who orderd it. You have to wipe once more with freshly napkin 'cause possibly particles of the gudgeon can still be in the neck of the bottle. Okay, dropping the foil under the table doesn't work, the wine is still so is the bottle and why did the label leave my sight? The cork is also presented between the glass and the som. This is not how you open a bottle of wine, the inside of the lip was not wiped... so many flaws this guy is obviously running his own show without a proper brain to tell him wtf he is doing wrong. 1/10 you fail, try again and let's see you som cert next video hah.
I see no merit whatsoever in using such a primitive contraption when we have electric cork extractors that require no effort and are very hygienic. I wouldn't bother to cut the cap of the seal first,as the opener tears through so easily. I have no complaints about the making of the video.

It’s pretty easy to sharpen that blade. Or have it sharpened at your local hardware store for a few bucks.
@@VAULT-TEC_INC. So how do I sharpen the serrated ones? They are becoming ubiquitous on consumer level corkscrews.

Very classic. Thank you!!
Thanks for the wine opening tips! I actually learned something! 🙏🏼
this is great. found very helpful
So many servers open the foil on the top ridge, that I came here to make sure the bottom ridge is correct.
yogibearstie I don't think it really matters
tseawell90 Did you miss the part where he said that it catches the drips?
The reason it matters is in old bottles there might Lead so you need to be below the bump to prevent lead poisoning during the pour.
I just broke a bottle of wine this evening trying to opening to no avail. That’s why I’m here 😂
How about wiping the top of the bottle after taking off the foil??

how do i tell the difference between a fine wine and a great beer?
a fine wine is fine and a great beer is great
They are both made from peanuts correct?
I never cut the foil it normally just pulls off fairly easily.

whats the tool you used called?
A "waiter's corkscrew" or a "sommelier's corkscrew." I like them way better than any other kind.
Xenoriddley we usually just call it a wine key
Wine knife or waiter's friend........
Thank you for this!
That’s the same way they taught us when I worked at Cooper’s Hawk in the early days. Sadly, it’s a different standard now:

does the wine taste better if You open it the "right" way?

Ye olde "Pushing the cork in with the butt of a lighter cause you have no corkscrew"
Just twist and open, stelvin cap, welcome to the 21st century.
Ahh... the Benelli M4
❤❤❤❤
This dude is legit a ww2 leader 😅
😋🖐️🙂👍
I think I can do that.
Excellent focus on cork removal here. Lol @ ppl sniveling over decorum
My method is much simpler---Grasp the bottle and strike the bottle neck on any hard object (not your head). This is a little messy but it's quick.
Unfortunately, his hand was covering the top of the bottle at the end where the wine comes out. Not sanitary!
P Patton I saw his hand on the side of the bottle's neck, not covering the opening. Seems ok to me.
You should see what goes on in the kitchen!
You will wipe the top with a napkin before serving.
I was thinking the same thing..
Super vedio please

Not a problem if you're going to pour the wine into a glass. If you're going to drink it straight from the bottle, use a screw-top.
