4th year after trusting your review and buying one of those kits here. It still runs flawlessly after a lot of abuse and neglect both in trail and regular commute. The only thing that failed after first year was the stock chain, stretching up to the point of sagging (replaced with garage door chain, which only stretched by 1 link in 3rd year so far). This thing really changed my life becoming my main way of mid-long range transport (Especially great for hauling bags of potatoes when 2 large milk and bread crates are installed. My heart would probably give up on regular bike if I tried to move all of that around). Thanks.

My grandfather from NJ got me involved in motorized bicycle kits. He had a 2-stroke that sat on the front of the 10-speed and used friction against the tire to run the bike. I would always ride this contraption when I would visit him as a kid. I was enthralled.
A few years later I saved enough grass cutting and snow shoveling money to buy a kit that Sears had. The kit used the same method of drive and after a few years and many friction wheels replaced I graduated to a moped and finally motorcycles. Good memories. Thanks for making this video. 😉

When I was a kid, I lived in Iran (1958-1960) and I saw quite a few bicycles puttering about with 2 stroke motors affixed to the handlebars. Everything there is very much spread out, and hot, and dry. You could get heat stroke pedaling from village to village (I lived in a little port town called Abidan) but the guys I saw riding these contraptions looked quite pleased with themselves.

Hey Todd! To minimize the engine vibration, get an old tire and cut it into strips. Use the strips between the engine and the frame to prevent engine vibrations from being transferred to the frame. Anything rigid connecting the engine to the frame (chain guard, muffler, etc) should be isolated from the frame as well. Thanks for your service!

Some pointers for people who're interested in using one of these based on my experience of about 2000 miles:
I built a bike with a 49cc varient of this engine back in 2011 and used it for going to college. I used a steel frame to avoid the metal fatigue the vibrations would cause to some aluminium frames making them weaker. Even painted it and did a 100% custom job, she was a lovely yoke to potter around on here in Ireland.
-The slang term on the internet for this specific engine is called a "happy time engine" because very few of them last beyond 2500 to 3500 miles due to poor quality components.
-Heavier bike frames are more suitable and lighter ones(i.e. racing bikes) have less material to support these.
-Disc brakes on at least the front are really mandatory because in the rain standard bicycle brakes will seem absolutely terrifying, trust me on that. I installed a 180mm hydraulic disc brake on the front personally.
-Replace the chinese spark plug straight away, they suck.
-The original spark plug caps are also terrible, I bought an NGK one for 5 euro in a motorbike shop.
-I ran 25:1 after the break in and accepted spark plug cleaning duties to increase engine life.
-The front left engine cover is highly prone to water ingress and in light rain was caused the electrical system to fail on me twice meaning I've had to replace the stator. If I was building another one I'd drill a hole on the bottom of that compartment for drainage and seal up the rest of it even better than I already did.
-The clutch arm actuates a pin inside the engines sprocket that relies on that sprocket cover being on very tight. The pin and arm are made of very poor quality steel and it's a completely dry metal to metal contact so I highly advise regualr grasing of it and carrying some kind of screwdriver to tighten the cover if it gets loose or you'll be pedeling a very heavy bicycle home very slowly.
-The exhausts and their bolts can rust very quickly if not looked after.
-The petol tanks 4 studs are low quality and directly welded to the tank so they strip easiliy.
-Bring a small pre measured bottle of 2 stroke oil with you so you can just dump it into the petrol tank when empty and fill up at any petrol station.
-Ensure the carb screws are set correctly.
-Do not use off road tyres on paved roads. I had a small accident because extra weight + low traction + slight leaning = bad time.
-Hgher tyre pressures than normal are required for the excess weight.
I stopped using mine in Ireland in 2012 as the laws were changed and the motorized bicycle then fell into the category of a moped even though it was under 50cc. Fail to follow tthe laws where you live at your own peril.
If any of you guys have any questions that I haven't answered already I don't mind.

Part Two: I got it running pretty good, the motor finally stays put. The chain tensioner made a mess of the frame and was no good from the start, so I ordered a spring-type. While it works, the spring itself requires a major upgrade in order to use it on the roads around here. Moderate bumps are okay, but one good pothole over a curve and the chain falls off. The spring isn't stiff enough, nor is it in the right place. Therefore, I'm going to take a much stiffer spring and hook it to the frame of the bike until I can get a set of motorcycle-type wheel adjusters built for a mountain bike. My recommendation is to get the motorcycle type wheel adjusters from the start and cut the chain to the right length. Tension devices are normally for things that stay put.

I've built a few of these. If you build a bicycle for the engine it's awesome if you are just trying to slap it on a random bike you'll get mixed results. Best one I have found for an engine kit is the older Schwinn Heavy Duty. They have much thicker spokes, better bearings, and beefier frame that fits the engine perfectly and the bike is a much better quality than the Walmart bike stuff you get nowadays.

31 mph max is not bad at all!! Most non-custom ebikes get around 25 mph out of around 1000W motor. Btw that compressed air on the handles was just brilliant! I learned something new, thanks bud!

Yeah worth bearing in mind the 25mph on ebikes is probably not motor-limited but speed-limited due to legal restrictions for unlicensed motor-assisted vehicles, as well as manufacturer wanting to have a guaranteed minimum range. Even a 250W ebike can do 20mph, though it'll be slower on the acceleration. There are kits for removing motor limiters for ebikes out there, a 1000W motor should easily get you 35-40mph depending on your weight/load.
But going much over 40 is just e-motorcycle territory, particularly if you're going on public roads with them.

@@InnuendoXP I would agree as to why they would limit them, they do it on golf carts...lol. A 50cc gasbike weighing 72lbs is pushing it, moving a 150lb man along at 20 mph on level ground, in my experience.

    • @dmaskell92
      @dmaskell92 2 роки тому +1

This isn't true, all e-bikes sold in the US are restricted to 25mph. My bafang kit will hit 40mph easy on a mountain bike (1000W 52v), you'd probably get even better performance on a road bike.
(Just FYI 40MPH is too crazy for me, I'm good around 25mph but my dad tops his out)
The gas motors are junk, you'll strip the exhaust from vibrations, and you'll lose compression insanely fast. You constantly have to adjust the throttle depending on your gas level etc.

Ok so I bought one of these about a month ago and here’s what I found out.
Let’s start with cons: installing, the rear sprocket was definetley the hardest part, a lot of fine tuning. It makes it a lot easier for me to take off the stock gearset so I can use another socket with an extension on the other side. Where the chain goes into the engine itself, I found I needed to grind quite a bit of material off the bottom of the enclosure to make the chain fit. That one got me for quite a while. Also, the engine likes to move to the side when the mounts aren’t torqued enough, same with the chain tensioner- I had to weld the chain tensioner to the frame, and it helps a whole lot to put two bolts on the engine mounts, along with some thread locker to avoid them coming loose. Also it helps a lot to max out both tires when you inflate it. Took me through two inner tubes that way. Last thing wrong with the kit is that the fuel shutoff valve physically came out of its enclosure and dumped fuel all over the ground. Yes I mean the actual part that you turn. I was stranded away from home on this one. Last con, the exhaust gasket material is terrible. It wore through so much it actually created a gap and the exhaust was flapping around loose. Allen bolts probably isn’t the best choice for an exhaust port... if you have the ability you should definetley replace these with studs.
Now the pros: it is fast as hell, I’ll be scooping cars on uphills. And it has the same braap braap sound as a dirt bike. And it’s cheap! I definitley recommend, however, you definitely need to be mechanically inclined in order to use this kit. I had to do many fixes in the field.
Overall this thing is the greatest purchase I have ever made. Too young for a drivers liscence, and this thing is way cheaper and better than any car I have seen.
Oh and cold starts can be a bitch at times, let it idle to warm up before you leave.

I bought the 80cc kit about 9 yrs ago & it was excellent. I had transport to a job which was about 15 miles from my home when I didn't own a car at the time. My biggest life hack for these set ups if it's used as vital transport (work etc) is to buy the Kevlar armoured tyres & the thorn resistant inner tubes. I rode that bike with 3 nails still stuck in the tyre for nearly 2wks (experiment) & had no issues. The tyres & tubes cost abit but they are well worth it compared to repairing punctures & maybe being late for work.

In addition the engine seems to perform better with two stock gas-tanks united by a T gas-line splitter.

actually, early on when brushless electric hub motors became super small and batteries and electrical systems were fitted inside the frames, there were attempts, some even succeeded, untill it was noticed going up miles of hills and hardly sweating kinda made people wonder WTF ??? then busted, ebike kits would be FANTASTIC except for the cost of the batteries, quality kits can be very inexpensive, but in all cases, the batteries are ridiculous, $150-$200 for an average store sold bike, $200-$300 for the kits, $500-$600 for a battery that usually only has about 20 miles of life and takes 5-6 hours to charge....yah, I'm a gas motor guy for now

  • @DieselRamcharger

after watching these vids i couldn't resist. ordered a couple of these kits and got to work. The engines are great. simple cheap chinese engines. but very reliable. the chain and ancillary bits are junk. my best build to date is on a fat tire bike, i made billet brackets and a mini jack shaft on the CNC machine. Its freaking bad ass. The kid has MANY miles on this rig, it is IMHO the best modern moped going! all up cost maybe 500 bucks between the engine, bike and bits. Pro Taper makes a 415 series chain that is of SUPERIOR quality to the piece of crap that comes with the kit.

When you pedal hold the throttle wide open till it starts to spit and sputter. everything is very cheap. there can be fuel supply issues from the tank, the petcock, the fuel line and filter and the carb itself. you just sort of have to check everything. pull the spark plug and squirt some premix in there. it should fire right up. if not, its a weak spark issue.

I bought the same kit on ebay for $85. I didn't have a bike so I bought one from Walmart. Install was fun because I like customizing things to make them fit. Wasn't a fan of the sprocket set up so I drilled out the center and used the brake rotor mounting screws. That was a waste of time because it didn't line up with the motor. So I used the sketchy two piece rubber sandwich and it worked OK. I didn't have the optional front mount so I built one and it's remarkably similar to the one in your kit. I used a u bolt but put clear vinyl tubing on the ubolt so it wouldn't scratch the frame. Starting it was a problem because you have to choke it, have the kill switch off, and the gas on. The gas was easy to figure out. The choke took some playing with and I used a multimeter to figure out which way killed the engine, and which way allowed it to run. It also took a bit to get the gas to the motor. After figuring out how to start it I took it for a few test rips and quickly discovered that it was very dangerous to try and stop it. When squeezing the break lever it caused the twist grip to rotate. I solved that by replacing the twist grip throttle to a thumb push throttle. I also had an issue with the bike being dual disc brakes. The rear break interfered with the chain and sprocket. You need a rear brake. So I robbed the rear cantilever rim brake from one of the kids 20" bikes and there was already the same mounting points on the mountain bike so it all bolted right up.
I then had a few problems throwing the chain occasionally. I tried the chain on top, and the chain below the tensioner. But I ended up with a spring loaded tensioner that bolted to the engine case.
Next problem was after riding it around town my rear end was beat to death because there's no rear suspension. So I bought a big cushy seat that helped a little bit. Then I found a suspension seat post. It has an internal spring in the post. That solved the sore rear end problem. Now the bike is a lot of fun to ride and everybody rides it all over town. It moves out pretty good

What helps the most is removing chain tensioner and making the chian right without it .... I made a adjustment bolt and nut to move motor in or away from frame .. takes very little movement to move half a link and if its tight its right not to tight tho

Cody Felix Rubber engine mounts are literally called isolation dampeners. They help prevent vibration from the engine being transferred to the frame. All cars have them and most motorcycles as well.

    • @TheProspectormike
      @TheProspectormike 6 років тому +1

they have them but ubolting the muffler to the frame does help allot you don't want any play in the motor at all because if the motor can move side to side even a few mm the bad vibes only increase x10

At higher speeds, it definitely IS the engine. These cheap Chinese two-strokes vibrate like hell above 5000 RPM.
But if your bike is vibrating above 25 MPH, I would check the wheel balance. Bicycle wheels are not normally balanced. But if you are racing your bike, you need to balance your wheels: both statically and dynamically. One caveat: once you pick up a pebble on the road, it'll cause a minor vibration. AAAAAAAAhhhhh, the JOYS of bicycle racing!

Next time when installing a new gas tank it’s a good idea to add a little fuel to it and slosh it around a few times and drain it. When a kit doesn’t cost much they skip the cleaning step because it saves a few pennies.

i reckon they're great, that one is no where near as good as the high performance model of it which is only $40 more and for that extra price you get a ton more quality, power and speed, however after using these engines to get from school and back for 3 years i copped a $2000 fine for riding an unregistered 'motorbike' with no license on a footpath next to a road, so thats the other side of it, so look into the laws in your country before buying said kit, its pretty rough copping a fine that big, espcially if you dont have a job, and after the amount of time spent making and fixing the bike, you get pretty attached, i ended up spending a total of about $500 (minus fuel) buying a custom bike, upgrading to the high performance engine, managed to sell it for half of that, but apart from all that it was a brilliant bike!

You may be interested in 2-stroke Stuffing's videos. He's tested a lot of mods and upgrades on his bike on a dyno., Evidently the best mod is just removing the baffle or complete end cap from the exhaust.
Anyway, most go 35 straight out of the box after the break-in period. Personally the best upgrades you can do for the money would be the chain($22 gets you 10ft of #41 chain from Tractor Supply which makes 2 chains that are exponentially stronger than the original) and an engine mounted spring chain tensioner (can be bought for $20 shipped if you shop around on eBay) which is so much better than the stock one that constantly shifts, and sometimes is even shoved right into the spokes of the rear wheel while moving. For reliability and safety I'd call these two things imperative.

because of how 2 stroke engines use the fuel/oil mix to lube, much of it burns off but still leaves some residue, most oil additives are designed for 4 stroke motors, using oil additives in 2 strokes can not only REDUCE the efficiency of the fuel burning off, but the residues themselves actually increase the need for regular maintenance more frequently and CAUSE long term damage and reduction of engine life, and believe it or not, using full or blend synthetic oils in the fuel/oil also REDUCE fuel efficiency because of the higher resistance to high heat and ignition, a strait up proprietary, pure 2-stroke oil and shell premium with nitrogen is best.
also, do not use fuel additives that add octane, on small 2 stroke engines they serve no purpose, the compression is not sufficient enough to be of any benefit.
DO NOT use fuel additives that have lots of detergents, except when doing breakdown maintenance, the engine relies heavily on the oil residue to lubricate and detergent additives in oils break down that function causing increased wear and tear, increasing the frequency of maintenance and reducing engine life.
if you insist on using a supplemented oil (an oil with additives) or oil additives anyway, NEVER, EVER, EVER use ones that have or add metallic and/or flammable substances such as zinc and phosphorus, these are optimized for 4 stroke engines, because 2 stoke engines burn off the oils, the metallic additives create deposits that actually damage the piston walls and rings, further increasing the need for breakdown maintenance and reducing engine life, as for flammable additives such as phosphorus and sulphates, these burning off in the engine create acids and cause severe corrosion in these smaller engines especially.
keep your oils and fuels as pure as possible and it will help greatly
when you intend on storing your bike for more than 60 days, empty the fuel tank and add a fuel stabilizer but NO oil, when you decide to go and ride again, add the requisite amount of oil, then idle the engine for 10 minutes, shut down for 30-45+ minutes for cool down, then go and have fun
try and remember, "2 stroke" & "4 stroke" are NOT numbers, they are completely different types of engines, and need to be treated as such.
I do recommend an oil additive called 'nanolub csx', but NOT for mixing in the fuel, it makes an AWSOME lubricant for external moving parts on the engine and bicycle and chain, may your bikes "Live Long & Prosper"

What's negative to say? I bought a kit on eBay for $69 shipped to my door in three days. Hell, the guy was even nice enough to refund half the cost of a new better chain when the original one kept falling apart. Couple that kit with a nice inexpensive fixer upper and $60 in upgrades and you've got a fairly reliable mode of transportation that is much more fun than simply pedaling around town, and a whole lot easier around here. I mean where else can you find a sub $200 vehicle that needs $9 registration, no inspection, and gets 75-150mpg when gas is nearing $3 again? I don't see what there is to not like honestly, or what you could even get inflated expectations over. I mean if you expect a proper motorcycle buy a proper motorcycle (which is admittedly what some people should do, considering they spend $1000+ on what is in the end just a bike with a motor no matter how you look at it), but in the intended form, which as far as I'm concerned is an inexpensive mode of transportation, they do precisely what they're designed to do and do it at a price point pretty much nothing else can other than maybe one of those little battery powered RAZR scooters -_-
