  • I was very luck to have guest Dean from ‪@massabesicgoldandsilver‬ and Big Apple from ‪@bigapplestacker6911‬ who love their Morgan Dollars. But, they are also serious collectors of paper currency - and continue to collect Morgans. Different channels with different personalities but they both collect in a similar way.
    Is it called Paper Currency or Paper Money? Because it’s not paper at all. But I am a Paper Money Collector and like Paper Money Collecting as a Hobby. The Hobby is called Numismatics and if you collect you are a Numismatist. I also love History and work for a historical society and love collecting a Dollar or Dollars specifically the U.S. Dollar or is it the US Dollar? I have recently started collecting Obsolete Bank Notes or Obsolete Banknotes? Is Banknote one or two words? Bank Note or Banknote? Today’s currency is made by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) and issued by the Federal Reserve Bank which issues Federal Reserve Notes that have a green seal and green serial numbers. At one point in time they issued large size banknotes called Federal Reserve Bank Notes. The Treasury Department used to issue Treasury Notes, Gold Certificates, Silver Certificates, and Legal Tender Notes, United States Notes and National Bank Notes. There were two sizes of U.S. currency. They were the Small Size Banknote, Small Size Bank note and the Large Size Banknote. Before 1996 they were called Small Head Banknotes, Small Head Bank Note and after that they were called Monochrome Bank Note and now the U.S. simply issues today’s bank notes known as colorized currency. There are many different ways to collect paper money. U.S. Federal notes that date back to 1861 and all of the different types of money that were issued by the United States. Break that down. You can collect by Banknote type, serial numbers, fancy serial numbers, National Bank Notes, Error money notes along with names of towns or people. The U.S. did not issue paper money until the first year of the U.S. Civil War in 1861. Before that there was Obsolete Banknotes. State-chartered banks and other private institutions provided the majority of currency known as obsolete notes that allowed the United States to grow from 1792 to 1866. This happened because the American government was unable to provide sufficient coinage to meet the nation’s economic needs. Since the Federal government refused to issue paper money, except in emergencies, and state governments were forbidden from doing so, banks and private institutions began producing their own paper currency to meet the needs of local commerce. Over 8,000 institutions issued paper currency during the period, providing a substitute for coinage. Unfortunately obsolete notes had several drawbacks: They were only as reliable as the institution that issued them; the huge number and variety of note designs and issuers encouraged counterfeiting; and as a result, the notes were only accepted close to their place of origin - so that they could be cashed in for “real” money if need be. The Civil War brought an end to the era of obsolete notes as a result of the Federal government’s need to create a stable national currency to pay for the war. World banknotes represent a tangible connection to history and culture around the world, offering numerous enjoyable opportunities for those who want to travel the globe through numismatics. There is also grading services out there such as PMG or Paper Money Guarantee and PCGS Banknote.

    Hi Dan! Wow! Great video and awesome guests! The two notes I want the most…. but will never own due to my finances (or lack thereof) are the Black Eagle and The Bison. I just love watching all the banter, laughter, and wisdom! Blessings always my friend! ❤️😊🙏

      Thank you and Betty squirrel your funds away! Black Eagles are attainable for $100 or less that still have good appeal. Check out this eBay listing:

    Fantastic stream! I watched it all! My first two Morgans are a 1899o and 1900o. I paid a dollar each back in 1996. I just got back into collecting about 8 years ago. I collect all denominations. This is for fun and bad weather project but lately it has became a obsession. Definitely love these guys information!

    Another fantastic video! Starting a new UA-cam channel can feel daunting, especially when you’ve set the bar so high with your impeccable editing, graphics, and that incredible TV-quality voice. I think a video sharing your process-how you achieve that professional polish-would be an invaluable resource for anyone considering launching their own numismatic channel. It could inspire others to take the leap and join this amazing community! I feel that I am on the cusp of starting one to document my adventures in currency hunting. I started paper collecting in June and now 20 notes in and already looking back at what I did right and wrong, the information sources that were not obvious or known at the time.

      Thanks for the very kind words. Your idea is awesome for a channel! To see the early stages of collecting, hunting, thought process documented early on would be amazing. Great idea to tell the story of how I started my UA-cam and what I do. Have to give that a lot of thought. If I can help and you want to talk please feel free to contact me polarcurrency@gmail.com. Best I can do is tell you what I have experienced.

    Dan, I really enjoyed the video. It was informative and entertaining. I, like many, started with coins, then dabbled in currency and now am very heavily into currency. Personally I find such a strong link between coins and currency than many people don't notice. Why are there so many uncirculated Morgans to collect? It's because of currency. Those Morgans were stored away in vaults for decades as the backing for all those silver certificates. It's a strong linkage.

    I inherited a portion of my father’s coin collection after he passed away. When he left me some money I really started getting into coin collecting. I was almost obsessed with it. I started out just filing out books after different books. Nickels , Dimes , Quarters, Halves you name it I was collecting it and filling it and just collecting it just to have it and filling up binders with the same coins and then silver and then foreign coins and then currency.
    You name it I would probably 😊collect it and now I have a bunch of things all over my house. Some time before I die I will have to have an estate sale auction to get rid of most of it.

    • @PolarCurrency
      @PolarCurrency  6 днів тому

      Maybe you can start selling off now to collect something "select" and more manageable to pass on but would still have great collector value? I would recommend paper currency! If nothing else it is lighter!

    We really need a video on fractional currency and colonial currency. Not only can you get a lot of these in UNC grades for cheap, but the history is so much better IMO. The fact I could get a series 5 fractional in 65epq for less than $150 is insane. The sets can even be completed in UNC for a fraction of trying to complete an Educational Series or an 1899 series, etc.
    I would also say my favorite collection pieces would be the Confederate Notes in UNC along with the Union Greenback and Fractionals.

    • @PolarCurrency
      @PolarCurrency  5 днів тому

      Both Fractional and Colonial/Continental are on the list. The reason for the delay? None of us are that knowledgeable! But "I've got a guy". Andy from @andeznotes5025 knows a ton - about all currency. I will be having him on in late December/January for an "introduction" conversation. The plan was to start from the beginning with ones but that's not the beginning. Fractional and Colonial/Continental are. Stay tuned. Thanks for the input and you are spot on for what to collect.

    For coins, it’s worth melt value with details grade, unless it’s a key date then it’s worth more.
    As an investor collector, rarity and grade is everything for both coins and currency.
    Agree with educate yourself with multiple resources for anything you collect.

      I have both coins and currency in my collection. Started with mostly coins due to age, and budget, but eventually started including some currency. On my fourth collection of both now, had my first stolen, and the second and third got me through some rough times as they were sold. Hoping that my current collection will be more permanent to pass on to my son.

      That's the purpose of these conversations! I collect US silver dollar and half dollar types along with sovereign "1 ounce" silver bullion./coins. And Article 1, Section 10 refers to States - not the Federal Government or individual banks - which ironically had to be approved by states to be a bank in the first place.
