WO1&2 are senior Non-Commissioned Officers, and are out-ranked by even the lowliest of 2nd Lieutenants, however it'd be a very foolish little Lieutenant who didn't listen to, and take the advice of his senior NCO.
The grunts (privates etc) are obviously most important, because without any leadership troops can still operate, just not effectively, where as officers with no troops to command are useless.
Christmas day at Bastion and everyone (military and civvy) is wearing their issued red and white Santa Hats - Except the senior WISWO. He has a black and white "Bah Humbug" hat! "Can you get away with that?" asks this civvy. He smiles, nods and points to his WO1 badge 😂
So for a private in the British army This is the addresses you use. the following like this (rank-addressing term) Lance corporal (corporal) Corporal (corporal) Sergeant (sergeant, S’arnt.’ pronounced SARNT) Colour Sergeant (Colour) Any rank above those is Sir: Lieutenant (2nd Lieutenant, Lieutenant) 2. Captain 3. Major 4. Lieutenant Colonel 5. Colonel 6. Brigadier 7. Major General 8. Lieutenant General 9. General 10. Field Marshal (when in active service) 11. Warrant Officer Class 1 (e.g., Regimental Sergeant Major or Command Sergeant Major)
@@ansfridaeyowulfsdottir8095 well if you was referring to the rank to for example “sergeant I need to see the Sergeant Major” then yes but when addressing the rank in person it’s Sir 👍🏼
A junior British officer dies and goes to the Pearly Gates in heaven. St Peter invites him in. "I will only come in if you can assure me there are no RSMs (WO1s) here" says the young officer. "They never make it into here" replies St Peter. The officer enters heaven and is having a stroll around when in the distance he sees a man strutting around in military uniform including Sam Browne belt and pace-stick shouting at people to "Get off the GRASS!". The officer goes back to St Peter and says, "You told me there are no RSMs here, yet I have just seen one!" "Don't worry about him," says St Peter, “That's just God - he only thinks he is a RSM."

My friend Dave P recently retired after 22 years in the RAMC as a WO1, now he's working as an A&E Doctor in Dundee, If you see this Dave, MOT mate.

WO2 is usually called Sergeant Major in my experience (14 years in the British Army 1999-2013 Royal Artillery)
