  • @SpringloftStudio
    @SpringloftStudio 5 років тому +2

    For Gitzo you can unlock all rings in one grab too and you don’t need much turns, just a half would unlock all sections smoothly. So it’s as fast as lever latches, and the rings won’t bite like levers. It’s the size making PD shine here. It’s like the first iPhone revolution to the phone market, now all brands need to rethink their travel tripod designs too, especially Gitzo at higher price.

Now there are second-rate, abliet decent tripod manufacturers like Benro, Induro, Sirui but they honestly don't hold water when compared to Gitzo or RRS.

      yep and while we are talking about overselling, rotary clamps can also be loosened all at the same time so the comparison on assembly time was rather misleading. I do prefer lever clamps but I don't find much difference in assembly time between my manfrotto tripods and my 3-legged thing one.

    • @p-forest
      @p-forest 5 років тому +1

      Exactly; I shoot mainly landscape and rarely set up on level ground, so for me I'd still be leveling everything with the PD. Also, I have a Gitzo Traveler and a cheaper knockoff backup, I never untwist one section of a leg at a time, I untwist all sections of a leg at once easily. I'm also concerned about vibration from wind with the PD's thin center column, and its holding strength as at 7:18+ when he moves the tripod with his bag on the hook you see it slip down twice. Hopefully that's only because he didn't fully secure it or something that gets addressed before full production.
      All that being said, there's a lot to like with this tripod and I plan on at least checking it out as mine has endured a lot of abuse over the years and I'm looking to replace it soon.

  • @SandyCrack69
    @SandyCrack69 5 років тому

    I share your love about good tripods.
    For years I had been buying cheap tripods and ended up not using them much because they were clunky.
    I was travelling overseas and had an idea for a selfie I wanted to take in Paris and needed a tripod . I was about to buy yet another cheap tripod and throw it out after the shot but decided to pay about double the price of a cheap tripod and bought a cheaper manfrotto tripod.
    It turns out to be one of the best photography buys I’ve made.
    What I Luv about it is it’s trigger locking mechanism on the ball head. It’s so simple to set up and adjust a shot.
    Whilst mine was designed for smaller cameras and wouldn’t suit Peters needs ( his cameras are so much bigger/heavier than mine) I’m still happy with it. However if I was in peter’s league I could see the need for giving serious thought to the tripod featured in this video.

    Great overview. I'd love to get my hands on one of these. I have a handful of other Peak Design products and they're all well designed and look good. But... Peak Design is so thoughtful in their design, every Peak product I have I love. I saw another YTer talking this product up and was impressed. You solidified my thoughts and really like when you point out what you like and don't like and compare. The ball head is miles ahead of anyone, not just the competition. Tripod design reminds me of the Sachtler Flowtech 75 MS Carbon Fiber Tripod. Both designs are groundbreaking.

    Gitzo’s rotary lock mechanism is why I use Manfrotto. Plus I’d like to see this loaded with a heavy Nikon D810, 24-70 f 2.8 plus Nodal Ninja pano head or pan/tilt motors. All in all 5 kg of gear and then hang the bag on the hook. Sure the wind won’t take it, but probably because the legs retracted due to all the load. I am open to be convinced that this more than a super expensive mobile phone tripod.

    The head on this tripod reminds me of the Gitzo GH531SQD head. It also sits down into the tripod apex and has a single rotating ring for lock/unlock. In addition, it also has a friction adjustment so that the full "unlocked" position of the ring still has your desired amount of friction. Nice, but expensive.

    The reason why I switched back from ANY Travel Tripod is the fact that they aren't sturdy enough at all.
    What benefit does it have if you have a light and small tripod that can't stand some wind because it is so light and because it should be small when packed it has 5 leg sections that make this thing wobbely. Don't argue with this, EVERY Tripod with 5 sections will be wobbely fully extended, this one also will be, it's physics.
    For me I travel around with a real tripod, Benro TMA38CL, 3 sections, sturdy as hell, really fast to setup because again it just has 3 leg sections to extend, and with a really good head on top weights less then 2 Kilos. Yes it is big, but when you try to shoot long exposures in high wind you will see what your feeled need for a small and super light "travel tripod" will bring you.
    Also, without some tools I can simply change out the center column to get very low, in fact I just leave the long center at home because the tripod itself is long enough.

    Just got to the point where you take a long time to setup the Gitzo tripod and already seeing a flaw in your workflow. Unless I’m missing something. I’ve got a Sirui tripod that’s pretty similar. Need to twist to unlock the legs but I can actually unlock all the sections of 1 leg in 1 go instead of going to each individual twist lock. Securing them tight again is the only bit that needs to be done per section. Same with the PD one it seems, only it’s clamps instead of twist locks.
