Kai lost his apartment to buy this tripod which is why he now lives in a garage.
Kai, "the human tripod" reviewing a tripod..how ironic
Now he can sell his Gitzo and save money ;)
@kevin Wooosh.
@kevinWe are all consumers who pay for marketing. You aren't immune to that. Enjoy.
@kevin obviously it was a joke kevin..
I find that $600 folds up quite nicely and is very light and portable. I think I'll stick with that.
Best comment I've read over the many blogs I've seen on this PD tripod

VERY VERY ORIGINAL==GREAT
What's Up Lee... Funny to see you here. Very amusing comment btw :)
@@jaymeez You never know where I might pop up 😉
My favorite tripod is the one that I remember to bring on an adventure.
Meaning?
@@BigBoss-gb4cx He forgot his tripod on multiple occasions.
Ha. Ha. Ha.
I always hate bringing one but when I have it it’s 👌
Most of my favorite landscape images I’ve ever took were on a tripod.
I was looking for a tripod. I found this man's smooth ass voice
Peak Design gone aggressive with this advertising campaign goddamn this tripod is everywhere
Stuart Murray
Makes sense. 💩 is everywhere too. This blends right in.
@@RobertLeBlancPhoto Yeah, you are everywhere. Makes sense.
If you think you're seeing it too frequently, perhaps you should be spending less time watching every photography UA-camr and get out and shoot more.
@@jaypob this is the second video I've watched on it, its hard to not notice it everywhere when your work is photography, all I stated was a simple observation having witnessed Peak Design come from nothing, to now this. Since you're forcing your unsolicited advice on people, here's mine: Perhaps you should spend less time being an assumptious moron and spend more time outside working on your social skills? if you keep at it then maybe your contributions to this world eventually mature so they become worth people's time.
@@RobertLeBlancPhoto Didn't know you'd spent enough time with it to develop an opinion, will you be releasing your own review?
Holy crap. A review that actually addressed questions about how the product would be used instead of just running down a list of features like a bad sales pitch. Well done.
You're the first reviewer I've seen that pointed out that the ball head portrait limitations are the same as other travel tripods. Well done with another review!
Kai’s reviews are just so brilliant and funny 😂
Kai is lowkey a hypebeast
High key, I used to watch the crap out of Digital Rev and always remember his Billingham camera bag. huge hype beast lol, have you seen them they’re like a $600 camera bag lol but hey it’s why we love him
Didn't watch any of your videos in a while... I start this one and I immediately get flashbacks of the old videos with Lok.
Been taking photos for a while now and I'm just waiting to get my "new" XT-2 home next week.
Thanks for showing me the joy of taking photos Kai! :)
I think this is the best Review of the Tripod yet. Way to go as usual Kai.
Have to agree. Kai always makes it sound like a friend is debating with you about the pros and cons of a product, which is why I like watching his reviews.
Thanks for addressing the panning question. I'd gotten conflicting answers from Tony Northrup and Manny Ortiz on it, and you've definitely settled the question!
One other question that I have is whether the tripod can be carried on the back of a camera backpack. With the Gitzo and others, you can stick the tripod legs into a pocket, and secure the tripod to the backpack with straps. Of course, this one seems much better suited to carrying *in* your luggage instead of attached to it.
Kai once again informative and a delight to watch
Fantastic that you did the side-by-side comparison with the Gitzo. Hope to see a follow-up video after you’ve had a chance to put the PD through its paces.
Thank you for making a vid about this tripod that's straight forward and skipping all the whining other people are doing for views. Appreciate the honest info.
I use the Gitzo traveler - love it
The fact that this thing can fit in a camera bag has me super excited for it
Yes! Wish I could attach a photo but it fits inside my Tenba DNA 11 bag along the top. Any longer and it wouldn't. Nice and compact width-wise as well which means it will work when I have my bag stuffed with a larger lens.
Sirui T25x Carbon is all I would ever need, but this ballhead style sure got me interested enough to take a second look...but nevertheless Sirui is hard to beat.
Did I have never watched your videos and blown away. Shame on YT for now featuring you in my feed everyday. You make me laugh, the content you cover is what I want. I’m a super fan. If you need me I’ll be binge watching your videos. 👊🏻❤️
I picked up the Series 2 Gitzo Traveler earlier in the spring and it is the best tripod I've ever used. This offering from Peak is innovative and interesting but I don't think I'm going to need to switch.
Honestly there is nothing innovative about this tripod. The non-sperical tubes that help them make it compact are uncredited borrowing from Satchler Flowtech Series. The ball head is completely useless hence the need to attach third party ball head via universal adapter to get any sort of use.
Always the most honest and practical reviews. Thanks!
And always the most fun to watch. Thanks, Kai. After Digital Rev, you have come along very nicely. I guess UK had no choice but to let you in, right?
Cool, but Im waiting for a travel tripod with the Flowtech design :D
What quick release plate do you recommend to use with the Peak Tripod?
I rate my tripods based on damage points on my opponents; this tripod ranked well
SnakeTail haha😂
Can you do a video about L-brackets please? I can’t seem to figure out which tripod works with which L-bracket. Does it need to have a special head compared to usual fluid heads? Thanks man!
any update/ post usage review on the peak design tripod? Held off from buying from Kickstarter due to the price and concerns...
Will it only work with Peak-Design quick release plates or can you use any brand quick release plate?
I normally leave the spike feet all the time on my existing tripods, are the spike feet going to destroy the padded bag?
Fisting the bag is always a necessary point to cover for any proper product review.
Thank you for addressing the “concerns” claimed by other reviewers with facts. Putting bro science to rest!
I guess it's easier to just turn the camera 180 degrees on a regular ball head and then flip portrait mode. I prefer to have the flipout screen on top when I film portrait shots.
Nice balanced review. There are some trade-offs on the head design but you can work around them by re-attaching the camera 180 degrees, if you know what I mean. Not ideal but the head is so compact I'll live with it. Wow, just noticed you have 770K subs. Congrats, Kai! Way to rebound from the old camera store channel (which we won't mention).
looks crazy good - but also crazy expensive lol
what would you recommend for mobile tripod
Ur tripod videos are the best on UA-cam let’s be real.
I picked this up last week and went to Romania for a photo shoot, one potential issue is security at Manchester airport - often over zealous compared to other airports - picked up on the hex key and said i counts fly with it! After a little persuasion and checking g with a supervisor who could see the rest of my camera kit - he let it go through. I may swap the quick release just in case! Other than that awesome kit!
Can't you rotate the ball in the ballhead to go in portrait mode in the other orientation on the Gizo?
Really good honest review!
Clamping a Nikon Zed in armpit while fiddling is Kai level balls.
This man is a genius... He should be the biggest star on youtube. He took a disadvantage that he has of getting the product late and turned it into a he showed you how he solved all the problems of other reviewers. Or that's his plan to make us believe he got it late. So he could us others reviews as part of his research. either way UA-cam is about getting the info you need. I watched every other youtuber video on this tripod i havent even finished this video and already started this review. He did more research then they did because he answered all the questions they left me with. WOW the point is UA-camrs be to quick to post because they want to show they got it first.... sometimes last is best... good job sir, you turned a weakness into a strength. Valuable lesson learned here and I thank you for it.
glad I stopped to write the review cause all I missed was the nordvpn at the end. Good video sir
dude, you are far better than all other photo channels.
your commentary is tops. Thank you!
Hey mate. What did you use to shoot this video?
I wonder if the magnet inside your new tripod distorbs the detectors inside my camera (Pentax K1II). I mean the detectors which detect in which direction the camera is pointing (which is essential for the astrotracing inside my K1II).
You literally left me at the station with all that height/weight/price comparison! Any case, these t-pods are way too pricey.
Nice explanation of this Peak design tripod Kai. I myself have owned several brands and types of tripods over the years, and this design for my work (architectural, portraiture and landscape) just does not appeal to me at all. I have Gitzo, Manfrotto, Feizol, Zomei and an Ifootage Gazelle Fastbowl (recently picked up)... and all of them are well made, and most are practical for my work (except for Manfrotto). And even the compact Zomei though slightly shaky when full extended is super compact and lightweight. The problem I have with this Peak design is in fact that very ball head that folks rave about. I much prefer my Acratech heads to any others to be honest for they are tough, lightweight, and simple easy to use designs. And as for revolutionary, I would say the Gazelle Fastbowl made by Ifootage has the most innovation design I have seen with its leveling head built in, though I wish it had shorter legs with another extension to be more compact to be honest. So though no tripod is perfect for every situation, one needs to find what fits your needs as a photographer.
I have been using my Gitzo G220 as my travel tripod for several decades. Not light weight, but super srurdy and it travels well.
How can I do top down shots with the Peak Design Tripod?
This would be better with a fluid head for video. I recently bought a Manfrotto BeFree Live tripod, and it's a truly ingenious product.
You could buy a fluid head and and use their universal head adapter. Yes, let's make it even more expensive 😔 lol
So are we all just going to ignore Kai’s dashing shoe wear choice? 😸 Thanks for the clear overview as always!
Does it have a level meter? I’m just wondering
You were actually panning on Gitzo!!! @6:31
I have ordered 2 on kickstarter. Just in case one breaks.
This video is an interesting take on the way we perceive/determine what 'good value' is over gear prices. Many of the other early reviewers of the PD Travel Tripod (like Tony Northrup) have pointed out how expensive this new PD tripod is... and yet Kai is effectively pointing out that it's really cheap when compared to the some of the truly amazingly expensive (but also high quality) Gitzo options. So I suppose it's horses for courses really. In this particular case, the big question over this tripod has to surely be: by buying this, are you prepared to sacrifice some usability issues for the fact you save a lot of space in both your suitcase and/or backpack? If the answer is 'yes', and you have the £450, then it sounds like a good deal. And I guess only time will tell whether these tripods start to fall apart too quickly after heavy use compared to its rivals. ...In my opinion, 'long term use product reviews' are an undervalued UA-cam genre!
The first good review of this tripod I see, and I have seen several...
Tony Northrup has a good one as well. The rest are cheerleading trash.
im gonna chase those crazy ball head out of town...
Finally an honest review. Not just an endorsement from a youtuber that was paid, or giving the item for a "fair" review. Over time the legs are going to get grit and dirt in them like with any tripod. Making it not as "quick" to set up. My biggest worry with this is the ball head. The way the locking ring for the ball head and the quick release plate are so close to each other. It's not going to be hard to accidentally loosen the quick release plate when you are loosening the ball head. I know you still have to flip the little lock to release the plate. Its a nice new fresh design on the tripod. But for the price, I'll be sticking with my current tripods.
I actually use a SIRUI Monopod and Stand, the 5 section P-326S. If i attach the ball head to the stand, and put the pole on the other side of my backpack its tiny compared to any tripod and it properly stands up on its own, even with a full frame camera. Thanks for sharing the tripod.
I've never been a fan of 5 section tripods because of that last section is oftentimes pretty flimsy, do you think this tripod would be able to do super long exposures? The setup would be a Sony a7RIII with G-Master 16-35mm F2.8 or something adapted Canon 17mm F4 L TS-E (tilt/shift)
Anyone knows a good tripod head to buy and set up to peakdesign's tripod with one of their adapters? As it is, it lacks the ability to properly tilt and pan
Is there a video version?
Me: sees news about the new Panasonic S1H, goes on UA-cam
UA-cam: Kai uploaded a new video about a tripod
Same here hahahah
They are released this tripod and it's ready for preorder... probably they'll find some spot in the market.
That’s some serious ball action
Other ballheads will do the the sidewards stuff you just need to turn the "bottom" part.
It's possibly a good tripod for tiny people, try being 6'3", then you'll probably change your opinion.
Can you make a video on the platypod “tri”pod as I think it has no uses but the ads say they are very versatile!
It would be great
I absolutely love my platypod. Now as a tripod it is very limited, but I travel a lot for business and often only have my RX-100 with me and that is the problem, the RX-100 is a good enough camera that you can do some really nice night shots or long exposures... So what I typically did was balance it precariously on hotel window sills, building pyramids of whatever I could find in my room to elevate the camera to see what I wanted... The Platypod fixes that, it adds just that little more stability when I perch it on a ledge that I get the shot I am looking for and don't throw the camera away. It is the only "tripod" I know that fits in a pocket of my briefcase which is typically the only luggage I carry with me. And if the best camera is the one you have with you - that is also true fro tripods.
I agree that a simple mini tripod with a half decent ball head will do more - but I usually don't have the room for it. So for my very niche application it is absolutely brilliant.
Since Kai got a baby, he don’t shoot videos indoor anymore , garage instead, to avoid bothering his baby .lol lovely
收納袋裡面還有個袋子裡面的配件不知道是什麼功能
請問你知道嗎?
It is unfortunately way too expensive. I was considering it but I'll wait until it's in stores to test it out!
Exactly. Peak Design is geared to the semi-pro or pro. I already have 5 tripods. Carbons, aluminium, travel, travel video. For it to be great it ought to be something like the flowtech by sachtler. Something 'super' (relatively) innovative.
best review.before you read who thinks kai should kick ball at it.fans will know what i mean.
ive been waiting for this review.excellent video.your the first one ive seen that mentioned adapter for using different ball head.omg the play when you pressed down on head.i know its pre production but if people are shelling out money then they need to see it.
also the model that they send out to customers could be totally different then if this is pre production.alot of money for item that no one has tested cos all reviews are pre production.
I like the FLM CP26 with a small FLM head. Slightly cheaper with all tripod/head functions.
I like how Kai already scratched the shit out of it.
I do wish reviews of tripods actually mock a true set up, with legs at different lengths.
What’s wrong with the $20 amazon basics tripod? It’s got all kinds of adjustments and it’s pretty light too
Is the leg releases are plastic or metal?
Peak Design’s over the top influencer campaign with this tripod has permanently turned me off of their products. And even though there are solutions to some issues, for a tripod in this price range, you shouldn’t need to spend more money to make it usable.
I’m glad you took a more objective look at it! 👍
Interestingly Kai's more objective look at it is significantly more forgiving than a lot of those "influencer" first takes.
Can you recommend a low tripod for taking wide angle landscapes?
Michael Large: This is what I use....its cheap(ish) and great value for the money.

I have a MeFOTO travel tripod. It works. It costs less than the PD. I do really like the PD straps though.
I love my MeFOTO travel tripod.
Good for use
He just unbox it and in a few minutes he managed to get it scratched every where, is it that bad?
It was hard to follow the numbers and know what meant what gram tripod price loan length girth ball head inclusivity. 5 and 1000 so 135 and its better with 60.
Thanks and I think it shows good design and innovation isn't a universal power... have Peak Design reached tripod zenith, or their own?
yo is ur new studio a Storage Garage?
Thanks for the review. Too pricey for me. I use Manfrotto sticks and an Oben BE-117 Ball head.

Kai, I use to think you were annoying. But now, I find you to be mildly entertaining. Keep up the good work! :)
Loved Peak Design...this will be my 6th campaign that I have backed. But NOT sponsored...but how come you got it and I don't?
First time landing on this fellows channel. Who else besides me had their mind blown the moment he starts talking?
Kai is the GOAT.
While leaving the center column all of the way down does restrict movement of the ballhead, but wouldn't it also solve the panning problem, as the head can only move horizontally ?
You are on to something but you missed a important fact. When the head is at its lowest position. It is lock/ cant move horizontally. But your idea made me think of an accessory that would sit on the PD head plate but the top part would revolve. Like a plate on ball bearings type of thing maybe ?
@@swansong007 Oh. I didn't know that the head locked-up when it was all the way down! So maybe instead of ball bearings, you could use something like a simple Teflon or Nylon disk for it to glide on and to keep it from locking-up?
Interesting review
Where are you at? Some garages?
Having to raise the center column just to get the ballhead functional is a non-starter. Add in 5-section legs, having to cantilever the camera to shoot in portrait mode with the standard head, lack of panning are also no-gos for me. Despite the claims, its not fully compatible with Arca-Swiss plates (such as the vast majority of L-brackets) unless you purchase an A-S adapter. What good is 'compact' if its not very functional? I've been looking for a travel tripod (been using my old Gitzo GT-2540 with Markins Q-ball head and RRS lever clamp)...not the smallest, but its fairly light and extremely stable. Unless something better comes along, I'll stick with what I have and take a pass on the PD.
Like having a coin laying around in your pockets is more plausible or better?
Ordered it but I would be lying if I said I'm not on the fence about it. The selling point for me was the size and built in head. The tripod head is usually the part I have issues with fitting in my carry on luggage so I have to remove it and wrap it in something soft so it doesn't fly around destroying everything in my carry on luggage. Is that enough to call this tripod worth it? Not sure, I prefer the twisty things on manfrotto legs than snaps. I'll wait for Kai's follow up review and decide whether or not I should cancel my pledge. Worst case, I know I can get most of my money back because I've experienced high resale rates when getting rid of all of my other PD gear.
Kai must be returning the tripod, that's the only possible explanation for keeping the tag dangling. Or maybe it's the new style 🤔
Oh boy cant wait to get this tripod!!! Along with my 300meg full frame camera and 18mm-300mm zoom f1.2 lens and carry 10tera of memory and 50 batteries so i can shoot in RAW and come back and edited 98% of the picture I took with my $25k camera with a $99 dollar editing program. so i can post it online.
You’re the best! 🎉
