  • Hi Guys,
    Just a quick walk around of my rig - it incorporates some interesting and experimental concepts which I'm still feeling out. Having all the space in the studio definitely makes it easy to experiment.

    Wow! I am amazed by your abilities to diy and find innovative solutions to your problems with the rig. This rig is awesome, every little piece resembles a challenge that you went through to get it just right for you.

      Wow that's very kind of you to share, thank you.
      Yes the build has been a journey, and the rig actually looks quite different now. Thankfully it's quite stable now and I am spending less energy configuring the cockpit

    Amazing setup, Dr. Quan. The personalized accents are fantastic. Love the customization

      Thanks Darren, it's been really fun to have the space available to pull the rig apart and reassemble as I please. Some ideas work awesomely, others not (who thought making the monitor stand 30kg heavier was a good idea? Hahaha)
      Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Your rig is so janky but I love it. I can't find a rig in the market that I like and truly fit my needs, so I built my rig from dimensional lumber.

    • @DrAlanQuan
      @DrAlanQuan  3 місяці тому +1

      I love seeing diy lumber rigs! I'm a big fan of figuring out what you need and getting the job done - cheaply.
      Spending big is always an option but good value matters to me!

    This is really amazing. I have a asetek invicta, that i don't use any more like my fanatec v3 , but this crazy angle, just lying on the floor could be uncomfortable. Do not get me wrong, everybody should do as he can oder even wish, but it is not really nice for your need of mounting. i tried a lot of possibilities in comparison to the real live, but at the end of the day, it is just a game, may be a simulation. so i ended up doing it exactly how i feel comfortable and not how it is in real live. i always say, to make it real immersive, please pay 100$ after 5 laps for gasoline and 1000 for tires, to simulate a real world, and if you crash the car, go to your room-mate and ask for a fight. haha, you see, it is just a simulation. but your videos are very nice and informative. keep going on
    😊

      Hi Phil, I feel the same way a lot of the time! I have no regrets, it's been a fun journey, but I have a few extra rigs in the studio at the moment and the ease of use and comfort of the more conventional configurations is very, very nice.
      I have to say, the driving position I've dialled in is actually quite comfortable. It's not too bad to sit in and edit video for hours either. Just getting in and out is a nuisance

    Great video, @2:35 time spot. Get the keyboard from logitec with the built in mouse pad on the right (it replaces the number pad). They make a few different models. Small enough to place right in your lap. And when you are racing you can place it right on the tray to your right. I have been using this setup for years in my motion sim builds.

    • @DrAlanQuan
      @DrAlanQuan  8 місяців тому

      Hi David thanks for watching! I thought about getting one of those touchpad keyboards but I decided for a conventional mouse because I use this rig for video editing and the mouse is way more ergonomic than a touchpad - so I learned to make do with the compromises of that decision.
      With the review rigs I have in the studio I'm definitely wishing I had a touchpad keyboard available though!

    Really like the clutch flair, that's a great idea. A nice little turbocharger on the other side might also work :)

    • @DrAlanQuan
      @DrAlanQuan  9 місяців тому +1

      Haha the clutch took a lot of cleaning, all that clutch disc powder is pretty toxic. A turbo with all that exhaust soot? Yeah you're right it'd be pretty cool hahaha.
      I'm actually going to reconfigure the stand and take the weights off - I move the rig and monitors at least once a week and the extra weight makes it really difficult

    I really thought I had seen it all, this is amazing! What will you do with all that space?

    • @DrAlanQuan
      @DrAlanQuan  Місяць тому

      I've actually moved out of that space, there were air conditioning issues and the Australian summer is unforgiving!
      But it was a big space which gave me lots of room to move equipment about freely and do some creative photography.
      My current studio space is much tighter which poses logistical challenges but the air conditioning is great hahaha

    What wheel deck side mount is that?

    • @DrAlanQuan
      @DrAlanQuan  9 місяців тому +1

      Hi Malcolm. It's a Trak Racer TR-ONE podium mount - I just got a rattle can and spray painted it gold (hence the less than durable finish - you can see the original red colour in some areas where the gold has rubbed off).
      I talk about it a bit in my video here ua-cam.com/video/zYm4D55UZF0/v-deo.html
      I might do a piece about it in the future, but overall I'm very happy with it, especially at its price (although I got mine when it first released, when it cost about 10% less than now)

    Hey Doc, I'm a bit worried that your tabletop is bowing from your rig's weight. Am I right or is this an optical effect from the lenses you're using? Great setup anyway, wish I had the space for something similar. Also, have you ever looked at trackballs? Great for tight keyboard trays

    • @DrAlanQuan
      @DrAlanQuan  7 місяців тому +1

      Good eye! The way I had configured the power board on my rig, there was not much length of the mains power cable - this meant that I needed to move my UPS away from the well supported part of the shelf and closer to the edge. The UPS is quite heavy, and when placed over an unsupported part of the MDF shelf caused some bowing. Knowing the properties of MDF I'm sure there would be warning signs of failure, but you'll be glad to know I've completely reconfigured everything now that there are multiple cockpits in the studio, and now the UPS is on a very well supported part of the shelf!
      The MDF shelf still bows a bit (it's not infinitely rigid) but there are zero structural concerns now.
      As for trackballs, absolutely never considered it. I use a trackball with one of my dental computers and am not a fan. Give me a mouse any day!
      Thanks for commenting! This was a unique piece of feedback which was really refreshing to read ❤️

    why not a touch pad for mouse? could stick it to side of seat

    • @DrAlanQuan
      @DrAlanQuan  10 місяців тому

      A few reasons, mainly that I'm familiar with a mouse and also for editing photos and videos I think a mouse is superior to a trackpad

      @@DrAlanQuan a graphic tablet with a pen holder should give best of both worlds. Usually they also have a touch mode.

      I've never used a graphic tablet before, but very interesting idea. For video editing a mouse seems so essential in my mind - I guess I'm just used to it after editing video using a mouse for 20 years
