Mine is still feeling fast except the battery is fully shot
until apple decides it to be obsolete and released an ios update to lock out your iphone model or slow down your iphone if apple feels merciful.
Dude! Why is this so damn good? It's hard to explain, but this is the most balanced and enjoyable review of any phone I have ever seen. Doesn't feel long, doesn't feel rushed, and you made your points extremely clear in a weirdly pleasant video.
Even though reviews are supposed to be about the author's personal impressions, this unbiased, "I like this but you might like something else", "This is objectively better/worse" and "This is subjective so you do you" seems like the most perfect format for a UA-cam product review.
That's because he understands the core concept. Not many people know how LCD and Amoled work .

The Verge makes it sound like its ok for a display to be 828p for $250 less from an already absurdly expensive phone. The LG G6 is $200 new. 4x res, 70% more PPI and LG makes better LCDs than Samsung on mobile. Yet in this review, he says, "Its an Apple display...with Apple engineering" This is horrible blind reception that only die hard apple fans would accept.
I think its awesome that there is 10s hardware in it. But then we have One Plus with a similar design direction except for Android yet its $529. Even cheaper on ebay new condition.
The verges argument as a whole is stupid. He thinks its ok to not have features other phones have. NO NO, that is NOT how innovation and competition should be like.

Don’t buy it if you don’t like it, you get an iPhone X with a lcd display and updates for 5 generations like all other iPhones. I had about 6 devices with android and the only os update I ever received was from Motorola from kit-kat to lollipop.i liked how cheap androids were but many of the phones felt like a mess. Switching from android to iPhone felt great.

I loved my XR. It's probably my favorite iPhone ever. The performance and battery life was exceptional. The camera took amazing photos. I had it in white and it was gorgeous. Such a great phone.

I’m binge watching videos about this phone until mine arrives to cure my excitement
when i got my XR, i got so used to it that i didn't realize about how thick the bezels were so i don't mind. Plus 750 dollars is a great deal remembering that apple could've removed a lot of things but NO they decided to be nice and added a few more features. I don't think anyone should be complaining to much bcz they removed more then 200 dollars for the XR.
I think we should appreciate the fact apple did that.

I think a lot of people are missing the point of the Xr and got hung up on the screen. Yes, it is an inferior screen when directly compared to the Xs's OLED, but it is by no means a bad screen. It's still one of the best the LCD technology has to offer. It's missing a telephoto lens, but the one that is there is the same as the one in the Xs. For all those compromise, in the Xr you still get the latest A12 chip (which, performance wise, is a still at least a generation ahead even when compared to the fastest of the newest Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 series), Face ID, and a longer battery life even compared to the Xs Max.
Is the OLED worth 250$ more? For some, like Nilay said in his review, yes it is worth it. If you care that much about the screen, by all means get the Xs. But I suspect for most users, it doesn't. I don't. I'm on iPhone 7 right now and have been waiting to upgrade. Last year the iPhone 8 doesn't bring enough change for me, and for me personally, $999 for a phone (the iPhone X) is too expensive. The Xs starting $999 is still too much for a phone, and at $1149 for the 256gb version, it's way too much (my personal experience, those storage fills up fast with apps, music, high-res photos and 4k vids) At $749 though (or $799, the Xr 128gb that I plan on getting) it represents good value.
You'd argue that for the same amount or cheaper, many other phone manufacturer offers OLED, at least 1080p screen, and bigger RAM/Storage. You're right. But how long will those manufacturer support/update their phone? Take Samsung. Does it still offer updates for the Samsung Galaxy S5, which came out in 2014 after the iPhone 5s? Nope. The S5 is long forgotten. The best you can expect from non google Android manufacturers is 2 years of updates. With Apple I can be confident that Apple will still support the phone for at least 4-5 years ahead if for whatever reason I choose to stick with the phone or hand it over to another family member. Longevity matters.

I'm loving my XR! I upgraded from my 6S and am amazed by the battery life! I've had iPhones since the first and no other iPhone has come close to the XR in battery life. Truly amazing!
The LCD vs OLED doesn't bother me. The lower resolution is still a retina resolution, and with fewer pixels to push, it gets more processing power and better battery life.
I miss 3D Touch but not as badly as I expected, I used it mainly for turning the keyboard into a trackpad but a long press on the space bar performs the same function, and does that more accurately.
The camera is a downgrade from the XS/XS Max but an upgrade from the 6S so I'm happy with it.
It's audio output is in stereo and is quite a bit louder, but the amazing battery life is my favorite feature.
It may cost less than the XS/XS Max, but for me it's a serious upgrade. And it's in (PRODUCT)RED which is a beautiful rich shade of red and a nice break from the black, white and silver I’ve had in the past.

It's missing a bell here and a whistle there and it IS significantly less expensive, but being colorful I think it can't get out from under the cloud of the 5C. Not a bad phone but it was stuck with the previous year's tech, was the last 32 bit phone and is stuck on iOS 10 while the 5S is still chugging along.
It's >almost< as good as the XS/XS Max, but not quite. It gives the folks who paid a kilobuck for a phone something to sneer at so they don't feel so bad. :)

Nice but XR does the job and by far blows all the iPhones away when it comes to battery life. I get a full day usage with medium to heavy usage.

I’ve had the XR for a little while and my life has never been better. This is the phone to end all phones. I’ll never get another one. I haven’t slept a wink in two months because I stay awake all night just looking at my phone. I’m seriously considering quitting my job so I can stay home all day and gaze at this engineering wonder even more. Words just cannot describe how GREAT GREAT GREAT this phone is.
I’m definitely gonna get a XR because it will age better then OLED screens I plan holding on to my phone for at least 4+ years plus I get a bigger battery I’m sold

@@jasondelaca5318 Well, for consumers like me who don't really care about the resolution, that's a bargain for me. The PPI is identical to older iPhones (iPhone 6 which I am coming from). I care about the screen on my iPad, which I'll spend the extra cash to get a pro. My MacBook Air is 11 inches and has 720p resolution, but I'm fine with it. I don't usually notice the pixels on my Mac.

If you've used a new iPhone, you will know that the haptic feedback on the iPhone feels so much more premium than any Samsung or Pixel phone. I switched over from Android last year.

Yeah I never had an iPhone before in my life! I've been with Android and I'm thinking about getting this phone, but the price on this phone is throwing me off... It's on sale right now for $400 and I never spent that much on a phone.
I was originally much more interested in the XS, although now that I’ve used both I can honestly say that next year it is extremely likely I’ll purchase a variation of the R model. The display is honestly quite good, very impressed! Makes it even more tempting to switch from Android!

This was the most blatant apple prop piece. Literally the opposite of balanced
The only thing he said was camera was subjectively better but passed over the blatant issues not only with the phone but apples choices to either remove features or never give them to people in saying they don't need them when these are things that people do care about
After coming back to this video four and a half months later, I can say my iPhone XR stands up to the test of daily living and it's an awesome phone! Thank you, Nilay and the Verge, for this video!

• Gigabit LTE
• 3D Touch
• Fast wireless charging
• IP68 water and dust resistance
• 512GB option
• 4GB RAM
• Thinner bezels
So are all of the thirteen features above worth it to jump to the XR? Not really.
Features that the iPhone XR has that the XS models don’t have:
• Many, many colors (including Red!)
• That lower price
• A 128GB option
• Longer battery life
• Wider and brighter portrait shots
So are all of the five features that the XR has that the XS doesn’t worth the jump from the S to the R? Oh yes baby!

Longer battery life is debatable.
Reaper of Pandas Apple said it has the longest battery life of any iPhone. 1.5 hours longer than the 8+ (Which was the previous longest). The XS is rated at 20 hours of talk time and up to 12 hours of internet use, while the Xr is rate at 25 hours of talk time and up to 15 hours of internet use.

It's a good phone compared with my 6s. But I'll wait until next year, when it will get cheaper once the new iphones come in. At this price it's not worth it.
MrFwlger I’m using the 6S too and I’m considerate to upgrade my phone. My 6S comes with a plan so I have to pay 56CAD every month with 1GB data, but if I upgrade to iPhone XR, pay 90$ monthly for 2 years with 2.5 GB data (0$ phone). Plus I get 200$ credit bill if I trade the iPhone 6S in. I think it’s a great deal.
Or you can just buy an android phone if the price is too much for you. There are many other great phones for that price.
If you sell your 6s on somewhere like ebay you can still get a fair amount... There's a lot of people who would take one for like $200-300 if it's in good condition, and that's the iPhone XR - which is like in the top five fastest phones on the market - down to around $500 (before tax).
Just traded my 6s for a $200 credit towards the XS. No regrets.

I think this video brings up some extremely valid points about the XR. The one thing I wonder is this: iPhone XR's portrait mode with the single, wide-angle lens is software based, right? And the iPhone XS has the same wide-angle lens, right? So theoretically couldn't Apple bring the wide-angle portrait mode to iPhone XS users as well? 🤔This is something I would love to see. I definitely enjoyed the wide-angle portrait mode shots that were shown in the review.
On the review wasn't mentioned (weird) that the portrait mode works only on humans

I would think it’s another way for Apple to save some key features for it’s more expensive flagship phone. What I don’t get is why they couldn’t make the LCD at least 1080p. Anything less than that in 2018 is ludacris!

Every the 3D touch does can be done with longer pressing. That's the route Android took. And Apple is doing the same with the XR.
João Victor Schiavo to some extent, yes, but it's not as fast not slick - furthermore the ability to see a preview of a mail, image, url, etc. And then access actions cannot be done as smoothly with a long press. Also the ability to scroll through your written text by 3D pressing in the keyboard is something you cannot go back from once you've gotten used to it
iphone XR has the ability to scroll through your written text exactly the same as XS, but instead of 3D touch u should long press on space button

Small and Large model of both sized would've created an iPhone 6 like super cycle for Apple! Really a missed opportunity for Apple not introducing a small LCD model!
A 5.5'' or 5.8'' LCD at $650 would've been a monster seller for them and one I would definitely have purchased!

I actually think if someone considers buying an iPhone it should be the XR over the XS. We all know apple still earns a huge chunk on the XR but if everyone buys the cheaper one it's a signal to the manufacturer.

Funny how you start by saying the only difference between the XS and XR is the screen and continue to name back glass, water resistance, camera, RAM and LTE speed...
That was odd. There are 4-5 small differences that "most" people don't care about. The ones watching there videos are the few that care about specs. For the non-losers, that a phone doesn't determine their happiness, this XR is perfect.
Good passive aggressive reply! But it's not really about the phone, but the sheer amount of emphasis he puts on the screen being the only determining factor in choosing between the XS and the XR. The whole question he asks his audience is "is an oled screen worth 250 dollar extra", but it's not just the screen, all the other stuff matters too in determining the price. It has nothing to do with how much your happiness depends on your phone.

The screen IS the only determining factor between the two, because non of the other differences are even close to significant enough for the average user to even be considered. If my parents want new iPhones, I will absolutely recommend the XR because to them even the screen doesn't matter that much. Apple is brilliant at selling products to different markets and the 2 factors that make the XR BETTER than even the XS Max (bigger battery life and dem gorgeous colors) are the perfect selling point that will make the iPhone XR definitely in the top 3 most important iPhones ever.
Regardless of screen, at least the XR isn’t going the route of the iPhone 5C and using the same internal specs from the iPhone X. That’s what did the 5C in, after all. Why release what is essentially a colorful version of the iPhone 5 when the iPhone 5S was going to be around the corner? At least the XR is a watered down XS with the key differences being a single back camera and an LCD panel over an OLED.
I have the iPhone Xr and I absolutely love it ! I went straight from the iPhone 6 Plus to this one so of course it is absolutely amazing to me... And the camera is amazing the portrait mode is absolutely incredible the pictures come out beautiful...
Went from a 7 plus to a space grey 256gb iPhone X and it’s still amazing I love it and plan to keep it for at least 3 more years
just got my iphone xr. it’s fantastic for gaming, perfect screen size, and even though it doesn’t look as good as oled it doesn’t burn in! outstanding battery life as well
Is it me or anyone else, But i don’t really care about the screen resolution? I currently have a iPhone 7 and really thinking about upgrading to this. I been doing a lot of research and a lot of different opinions I have see. To get to the bottom point why is everyone picky?

Elchapa130 no haven’t gotten the phone yet, it’s coming in today. I will let you know how it goes when I set it up and all that. I already got a screen protector and a case. I got it at Walmart for a total of $15 bucks.

The XR is the cheap option out of the 2019 collection of phones, but a real budget phone to update to is the 8 or 8 plus. It has great battery life, a beautiful display and has everything you need for less.

However, I need to say 2 things:
1) Nilay, for 3D touch, did you know you can hard-press on the Google Maps app and immediately get directions to your house/work? Also, the Phone app can be hard-pressed and you will be able to speed-dial your favorite contacts! Do you not use these or not know about these?
2) Since using my XS Max, I've noticed that when I take pics with live-photo on, the result is much worse compared to when i turn it off. Especially in low light. Do you think this will have an impact on your current and future reviews?
Excellent review. I’ll only be able to compare the screens in person to see the difference between the XS and the XR with my own two eyes. Can’t wait for Friday to get here so we can all compare and contrast.

Upgraded from 6s to xr and so far I’m in love with had no problem with the display it is still very good and the other features are almost of xs and xs max

@@joshuachamp the note 9 doesn't need benchmarks it just performs. With a qhd+ AMOLED screen, 32bit headphone jack, fast wireless charging, true Gigabit LTE, 512Gb internal storage and it's Terabyte ready. Oh and since I pre-ordered I got it all for $240 less than the 256Gb Xr over 24 months
