100% agree and loved Dan Fogelberg who moved me to tears many times . My college roommate introduced me to his music when he was completely unknown . I became a lifelong fan. Great review, great comment , and thank you Dan rip ❤
the man was a poet an incredible musician, could rip an electric guitar, played great acoustic guitar with the best of them an expert piano player, songwriter, great vocalist whether folk, bluegrass, or blues probably one of our best most versatile performers we have ever had.
NetherLands is Dan Fogelberg's music at it's peak. The full orchestration in this song puts it on a different level. In fact, the entire NetherLands album is superb. Great reaction Harri!
This song has been my life song for the past 40+ years since I first heard it. No matter how many times I hear it, it touches my soul like no other piece of music ever has.
Always loved Dan's first six albums the best. They went platinum and 2x platinum for a reason. Wife and I have been listening to his music for 46 years. Attended at least 20 concerts, and began dating listening to Dan. Still listening just about every day. Dan was and still is an important part of our lives....and we told him so.
Dan was a poet. The words in all of his songs are wonderful. I saw him in concert 3 times ... one with the band and 2 acoustic. He is one of my favorite artists.
Mr. Fogelberg was one of the nicest people one could hope to ever meet. Brilliant musician, brilliant voice. I sent his table a bottle of champagne once. I've seen him live several times. Huge fan!~
Dan Folgelberg is my favorite artist. Going down the rabbit hole is deep with him. I suffered from depression a lot in my earlier years and he helped a lot. I would listen to his song, "to the morning", as often as I could when I would wake up. Gorgeous song, he said after he wrote it that for the first time he thought he could make a living with his music. Give it a go, you will thank me afterwards. I am that certain.
I thought I loved his greatest hits until I heard In The Morning! I'll be honest. I cried miserably. Bring me a single song in 2023 that is nearly as melodious. Not to talk about the phenomenal lyrics. Home free is probably my favourite album by Dan. I'm yet to listen to some more albums of his I've collected on vinyl. Gone too soon though.
A masterpiece that makes my spirit soar every time I listen to it, which is about 3,000 times now as I bought the album back in 1976 when it was released. This was the first Dan Fogelberg album I had purchased . The album is incredible as is most of Dan’s music. Another one to react to that you will love Hari is The Reach.
Hi harri… glad you enjoy Fogelberg - one of my all-time fave artists! I have all Dan’s albums from the start… and while I love the Netherlands album… there are actually several songs on it that I feel surpass the title track! Once Upon a Time is one of his best songs… Promises Made is great… Love Gone By … Dancing Shoes… Scarecrow’s Dream… all are less bombastic… more to the heart, but with just as wonderful lyrics! Keep going! Fogelberg is a giver! I only saw him live once, and he and band were absolutely brilliant!
To me, it's a coin flip between Netherlands and Innocent Age for his greatest albums, with Souvenirs not far behind. There will never be another Dan Fogelberg.
Dan wrote this song as if you are deep in the Rocky mountains. You can hear the wind, the tall peaks and valleys. So gorgeous if you close your eyes and imagine those things. My favorite musical artist … ever. I was lucky enough to see him in concert 5 times. He wrote all types of music. Try some of his great rock songs such as Missing You and the Power of Gold. Just greatness.
I don't know why UA-cam found this for me I appreciate you for playing it. Here's the story behind that song we lived up in Nederland Colorado. Dan had bought a house from Chris Hillman who at the time I believe was with the flying burrito Brothers. Another one of Chris's great ventures was jamming with Stephen stills at his house down the street and at pioneer inn and they formed Manassas. Pioneer inn in Nederland where we all used to hang. Anyway Dan came down to get some guys to move a grand piano up into that house below rollinsville and above Nederland. He sat down and wrote Netherlands composed the entire album over the winter. Man we had some great times back then. I can attribute my piano playing partially from DF. I was just a roadie back then but occasionally when cabins were empty at Caribou we would jam on the grand piano that Elton John used as he composed in several albums up there over the years. Great times. I can tell you the winners were pretty miserable sometimes up there was so much snow those brilliant musicians and composers who lived up there really had nothing to do over the winter because everyone was snowed in much of the time. Stills helped out a lot of peoples cars back then he had a tow truck the only one in town and he would even help the forest service out with it. Steven actually lived in Gold Hill down the road.
I love the entire Captured Angel (1975) album. My heart! This title song from the album Nether Lands was 1977. I was so sad-he died way too young. Prostate cancer, which he got and successfully fought when he was 52-3; but it returned and he died age 56.😔😢 I don’t know what you have heard already, Harri, but give a listen to the whole album, Captured Angel, one evening when you have time.
It was so wonderful to see your reactions to Dan Fogelberg music. He is my favorite performer. I saw him in concert 8 times. Once I had the privilege to be front row center at an acoustic concert at the Universal Amipitheater in Los Angeles. It was only Dan and his 12 string guitar and piano. He was having so much fun and the audience was so positive, he played for over three hours. What a show! His music is so important and poignant and should never be forgotten. Love your channel you are doing a great job!
I happened across this song sometime in the late 1970s. Had never heard of it. As I listened the words and the music together formed a musical masterpiece. Acceptance of life over death is the main message as Fogleberg wrote this after contemplating suicide.
This album needs to be played through from start to finish - same with The Innocent Age. I don't think that was his intention but there is a real flow and it is an experience
Great review as always Harri. I had many of Dan s albums. Loved his talent and creativity. I loved the sensitivity in this song and the words and music are theatrical - true. I also loved The Reach - another great song of Dan s. Was happy to have grown up with his music. He left us all a wonderful legacy.
I loved your reaction Harri. Your thoughts are always right. I am 67 years old and have listened to DF since a freshman at college. He was a very unique voice and songs that touched my souol.
Dan is one artist who never really got his due. His best songs were not hits and some of his hits were not his best. I first heard him in 1975 and have been a lifelong fan/lover of his music.
The first DF show i saw was in Knoxville tn. with 13000 plus it was snowing and about 15 degrees. His band could not get there, he had 6 or 7 guitars in a half moon shape and a grand piano in the middle of it. No one opened for him, I was 7th row dead center stage he played for almost 5 hours drank a liter of Jack straight and about a gallon and a half of water. He talked about every song he played told us what he was thinking when he wrote them and recorded them at his studio in his house. You never once missed all of the orchestra music that is in so many of his songs it was totally amazing. His songs always had meaning to me, some have changed with my over 40 years as a fan but meaning they always have. they touch your heart and your soul.
This song to me is the magnum opus of Dan Fogelberg. He was the greatest singer/songwriter of my time among many giants. I used to go to Big Bend National Park every year, and each year I'd play this song as I went up and into the Chisos Mountains... This song and Rocky Mountain High by John Denver capture what it is to be in the mountain wilds for me.
The older I get, the more this song makes me weep. And much like Bohemian Rhapsody, the sheer talent, creative genius, and bombastic confidence (in a good way) required to put such a thing on tape is beyond imagination. Long live 1970s music.
A singer / songwriter / musician of the highest caliber imaginable ! Why is this ridiculously gifted man so underrated as is humanly possible as far as talent and artistry is concerned ? It's unforgivable ....
amen! talent coming out of every pore... musically, lyrically, poetically, emotionally, spiritually... and this piece from this master is just soaring! Underrated? As 'nether' as it gets.
There's a tribute album for Dan with performances by many famous artists. Donna Summer did a version of Netherlands just before she died, and it is absolutely brilliant.
I have seen Dan 10 times in concert and got his autograph twice - Oh, one road was simple acceptance of life The other road offered sweet peace When I made my decision My vision became my release Dan has said that a person has 2 choices in life, either to end it or to continue on and live
I echo the sentiments my fellow Dan Fans. He was a poet musician… beautiful music that speaks to the soul. Thank you for the great react… Keep’em coming!
Remember...the road less travelled...we are all creatures of comfort...there would be no appreciation for the light if not for the dark!Balance is key...always follow your heart...don't follow the mind!
Gosh, back in the 70s-80s every young woman lucky enough to know that lovely man’s music was likely in love with Dan Fogelberg. Thanks, Harri. You made me smile, remembering. P.S. the first time I visited a recreational dispensary was in Nederland, Colorado, where, as it happens, Dan F lived and that name was the source of Netherlands.
FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!! I knew he would love it. Now we need for you, Harry to listen to the whole album. You do not even have to review it, JUST LISTEN to it. You will be better for it. Also, most of the Eagles played and sang on the album.
Oh wow, I can't believe you were covering Netherlands by Dan fogelberg! I love this album and this song so much and it never gets its due. Thank you so much! This album and captured angel are two of my favorites.
First time I heard Dan, I was hooked. I’d gone to a concert back when there were two bands playing-one a warm-up, and then the featured band. 1973 I’d gone to see The Eagles, back before Joe Walsh had joined the group. He, Dan F., opened and if I can recall...he was a singular act, just he and his guitar. He had no band that I remember. But he was beyond good, I could have gone home immediately after he’d played and sang, that’s how fulfilling listening to him was. The Eagles were great, Fogelberg was a surprise hit. The Nederlands was the album he’d just released, and I was so blown away. RIP Dan Fogelberg, you’re a genius!😢. Just because I don’t remember his band doesn’t mean they didn’t play, he was just so singularly incredible.
I recall an interview with Dan Fogelberg and he stated that his line, "the other road offered sweet peace," was actually a reference to suicide. Clearly he did not choose that path.
Back in the 80s, I took an intensive 2-week college class called "Developing a Professionally Effective Presence." Throughout the class, we were pushed to break through barriers and move outside our comfort zones further than most of us ever had. On the last day, we invited our family and friends for a "graduation" of sorts. A requirement for the graduation program was for each student to do something that really scared them. I chose to sing (a cappella) this beautiful song. I was the last student to perform. Several other students also chose to sing songs that were meaningful for them. I was incredibly nervous as my turn approached, but I managed to muster the courage. There was a lot of noise among the guests: babies fussing, young children talking, people squirming in their squeaky chairs, coughing, sniffing, etc. But by the time I began the second verse, I became aware that all noise had ceased (something which hadn't happened with the other singers). The audience became still and focused, even the little ones. After I finished, I received a standing ovation. I was stunned beyond description! The college videotaped the entire program, so I was able to verify later, by watching the video, that I hadn't imagined it -- it really happened. This gorgeous song has always meant a lot to me since I discovered it on Fogelberg's album in 1977. My opportunity to perform it, and the way it was received, makes it all the more meaningful for me. What a thrill to see you reacting to it!!
Wow! You were brave indeed. If it isn’t on UA-cam would you be brave a second time and post it so the rest of us can enjoy what the lucky folks in that audience enjoyed?
I love your reaction to his brilliance. This song is a masterpiece and the whole album is amazing. Your take on the last part is interesting. I always thought he was talking about life and death. “One road was simple acceptance of life; the other road offered sweet peace…” like somebody at a serious crossroads in their life and didn’t know whether to choose life and accept it as it is or choose death and gain peace. That’s just how I interpreted those words. Whatever he meant it is just beautiful, the music and the lyrics…he was such an extraordinarily talented man.
This song takes you on a full emotional journey. It reminds me of a Shakespearean play, with several acts, a tension-filled climax, and a denouement with resolution in the ending. A classic in every sense.
Dan is my favorite artist of all time. I believe I read somewhere in an interview that he said the road that offered sweet peace was death. The other road is life.
Thank you for shining a light on the brilliance of Dan's storytelling. I first bought his album in 1972 and then over the years went to two of his concerts. Love him and miss him!
After my 1st husband died, I listened to the Nether Lands album over and over. The song itself is one of my favorites. Glad you liked it. The whole album is fantastic. I especially love Loose Ends.
The 3. verse struck me like a lightning the first time I sat in the music store listening to Netherlands. "Like the songs that the darkness composes to worship the light". As a Dane, I'd never experienced spiritual poetry like that. It was an awakening and Dan's music has stayed with me ever since, almost 70 now.. Thank you for this reaction video.
A point that many people forget, is that this album was produced by Joe Walsh (James Gang, Eagles), when they were both living in Nederland, Colorado, and recording at Caribou Ranch Studios. When Dan Fogelberg was inducted into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame, Joe Walsh performed, and was also inducted at the same time.
I’m my opinion one of the best song writers to have ever lived. I’ve listened for all of these years! The songs are as new and fresh today as the first day that I heard them. I cherish all of his work!! A master musician and songwriter gone too early!
This is my favorite song of all time. A lot of forks in the road. I used to play it for my 5th grade students. The video is also exceptional. The album a classic. Thanks for the story.
This is not just my favorite fan together song. It is in the top two of my all time favorite songs. And it has been my favorite album of all time. As you say, it is a masterpiece. It would be breathing would react to the album in its entirety.
After Dan passed away there was a tribute album with many really good artists on it performing his songs. Donna Summer did this song and did it beautifully
Amazing song along with a fantastic album... This is the album where Dan was living in Nederland, Colorado and was suffering a "writer's block"... OMG! This is the outcome of writer's block? Netherlands (title track) is often misinterpreted, according to Dan himself. The phases "acceptance of life" or "sweet peace" is the duality of life vs suicide. Do you take whatever life throws at you or do you cash in your chips and call it good. Dan believed life was so sweet and precious one should complete the journey. He is greatly missed. Thanks for such a great video!!
I'm a huge Fogelberg fan, but this song is next level. The orchestral section still moves me to tears and the lyrics are soul inspiring. When I first heard this my first thought was that it could be in a musical too! (I work in musical theater)
I'd heard this song first in 1980 in my 20's. Astounded at the masterpiece it soon became what I thought the most beautifully inspired song ever. Recently I lost my wise, sweet, stunningly gorgeous elderly Mom. I thought of this song instantly to honor her at her memorial. In my 60's now I relistened. Quickly I could hear her sharing her experiences of life in the lyrics and music.. The stages of life whether hard struggles or good times, the choices ,struggles, indecisions, decisions and challenges and blessings in all of life we face along with the things we long for, hope for, want, love and desire, the things we see the miraculous in, see darkness and light in, inspiration and faith, and nature and beauty all in the course of life. Listening I imagined my Mom free strong and alive learning to fly and not knowing which way to go bc in a new place and life sharing the lessons, experiences on our beautiful earth. The blessings and trials and philosophical insight that led to choices that led to a well lived life. Also, describing the heavenly glory in and on the earth and in eternity that she now is a part of. My point is when describing the song to siblings to approve the song for the funeral I was deeply shocked that the words you chose to describe this song were identical to my own. We had The Netherlands song in her funeral and it was as if my beautiful mother was speaking her truths even the road less traveled that she chose that led to a life of peace and happiness.
All Dan's music creates a story through life. You should try other songs by him. Try stars, along the road and souvenirs I appreciate your reaction. You get it!
You answered a question I have always had about this song: Which road did he take. Now I understand it's not the road you take so much as that you make a decision and get on with it.
It's a perfect album. The songs, arrangement, performances. Utterly brilliant. He was a singer-songwriter who enhanced his songs with a near-classical approach.
The whole Netherlands album is phenomenal. Scarecrow’s Dream, Dancing Shoes, False Faces, Loose Ends…..magnificent pieces of music.
I have promises made and give me some time on my play list.
Give Me Some Time , Lessons Learned , Once Upon A Time , ... The Last To Know ... oh wait different album!😄👍🏽
Don't forget "Sketches."
@@lensnart1303 yes!
Yes. This album set the standard.
Dude, litterally with Dan since 1973. Im 67 now. He IS my soul mate
65 and still my all time favorite ❤
His music has been a part of my life since the 70s.absolute musical genius and so under-rated.
Rock and roll hall of fame 🙏🏻‼️
To know and love Dan's music and liquid lyrics is to know yourself...cuz he sang our souls to us.
The entire album is a masterpiece. It needs to be listened to from start to finish. Dan is in a league of his own…a musical genius. Oh how we miss him
A poet 🙌🏻🫶🏻
@@TheTMazso nice and hearing this again

One of my favorite songs by one of my favorite singers ❤ RIP Dan
He never got to the end of his dream.
Evidently God thought so. We are grateful to Him for loaning Dan to us, for lifting our souls.
This particular song is among my Top 50 songs by any artist. The lyrics, the music and the orchestral arrangement are absolutely stunning!

Beautiful reflections on this lovely song!
I recall an interview with Dan Fogelberg and he stated that his line, "the other road offered sweet peace," was actually a reference to suicide. Clearly he did not choose that path.
Yes...this is what I have heard as well. He decided to accept the other path.
It’s one of his most brilliant works. Thank you❤❤
What a story - thanks!
Bravo, BRAVISSIMO
Wow! You were brave indeed. If it isn’t on UA-cam would you be brave a second time and post it so the rest of us can enjoy what the lucky folks in that audience enjoyed?
The first DF concert I went to was an acoustical tour. Beautiful!
One of the most beautiful and poignant songs ever written. Thanks for your review.
Dan had a lot of talented friends. Reading the liner note on his albums is alway impressive, but he also plays a lot of the instruments himself!
He WAS in a different place spiritually and physically. He moved to the mountains of Colorado.
That’s the grand sound of tremendous inspiration:)
You were so clairvoyant! They did make a musical out of the works of Dan Fogelberg, after he passed!
Wow! please share info on the musical
I love your reaction videos.
Dan is my favorite artist of all time. I believe I read somewhere in an interview that he said the road that offered sweet peace was death. The other road is life.
Maybe the best musical talent and artist of all time. Been a huge fan since 1977.
I think it was Souvenirs album produced by Joe Walsh. Another great Fogelberg album. My favorite is Netherlands.
It was Norb Putnam that produced this album, but Joe Walsh does play guitar on the song Loose Ends from it😊
I’m my opinion one of the best song writers to have ever lived.
I do love Dan Fogelberg thanks for playing this Harri and suggesting it Ginny.
Young Dan was a visionary soul. All his music was so very powerful
I’ve never heard this song before and it’s beautiful and inspiring! Thank you Dan Fogelberg! What an artist. ❤
This is not just my favorite fan together song. It is in the top two of my all time favorite songs. And it has been my favorite album of all time. As you say, it is a masterpiece. It would be breathing would react to the album in its entirety.
Great reaction. In terms of a masterful piece of music, it's up there with Knights in White Satin by the Moody Blues. Dan's best work.
Another great and deep song by Dan is Nexus - from The Innocent Age album. Beautiful.
After Dan passed away there was a tribute album with many really good artists on it performing his songs. Donna Summer did this song and did it beautifully
The Tribute album had a great version of this song!
She really did Dan proud!!
This song literally brought tears to my eyes. Thanks for this reaction.
Thank you for this. I believe Dan was so great at mixing classical music, folk-rock and rock.
The particular song gives me an Alan Parsons feel with orchestration and production...it is really beautiful
I absolutely love this song!
The Innocent Age is a double album that Dan did that was the height of his fame. Please react to the title track. It's Dan Fogelberg at his very best!
This song always instantly restores my soul every time I listen to it.
I'm a huge Fogelberg fan, but this song is next level. The orchestral section still moves me to tears and the lyrics are soul inspiring. When I first heard this my first thought was that it could be in a musical too! (I work in musical theater)
My favorite dan fogelberg music. Best album
Dan's Masterpiece. Sat right in front of him 1st row on this Netherlands tour 77❤
“No Resemblance Whatsoever “ is an album he did with Tim Wiesberg the flutist. Sooo great!
His first album with Weisberg was Twin Sons of Different Mothers. FYI
