I grew up listening to the soft rock music of Bread in the 70's & had their albums. Love David Gates voice. He has one of the most soothing & mellow voices. They had so many hits such as "If", "Everything I Own", "Baby I'm-a Want You", "Diary", "Lost Without Your Love", "It Don't Matter To Me", "The Guitar Man", "Sweet Surrender" & "Aubrey". In 1978, Gates enjoyed success as a solo artist with the hit singles "Goodbye Girl" (from the movie The Goodbye Girl) & "Took The Last Train".
It wld seem that we are in the same 60 - 70s generation bro (or sis). It was a great period for this kind of soft (& sweet) rock with great bands like Bread, Hollies, Dave Clark Five, and of course there was the Beatles👍🤩
I love the wonder in this beautiful woman's face. She is putting words to the tears I get since hearing this when I was a kis. RESPECT and LOVE to all here.
Oh PLEASE do the song "If" by Bread!! It's the most beautiful love song ever done, bar none. Every time I hear it, it literally puts me into a dream state, it reaches into your soul! If you liked this, you'll absolutely love it!!

“His voice is like butter.” Perfect description. I remember listening to my older sister’s album “Bread Anthology.” I played both sides repeatedly and loved it.
Glad you like them too.... David Gates & Bread is one of my super favorite bands. They are one that I would from time to time dig out and listen to. Soft rock, smooth, easy to listen to! They have a bunch of other good songs as well, "if", "Aubrey", "Baby, I'm-a Want You”, "It don't Matter to Me", "Sweet Surrender", "Diary" and many more. You should really check out more of their songs. Oh rats! Now I feel like listening to them again!
One of my favorite bands from the 70’s… I could listen to them all day long❤️ Saw them in Las Vegas many years ago, David Gates has one of the purest voices! Just love this band! One of a kind for sure❤

Thank you for another analysis of the great artists that are from my childhood. "Aubrey" from this group will definitely demonstrate David Gates and Bread's ability to reach all audience members from this era. David Gates had a brilliant solo career too.
Welcome to the ear-worm hole that is Bread... yer gonna LOVE IT. Once discovered most listen to Bread for life. Great music for rainy days... long drives... Must listens: Everything I Own, Diary, Baby I'm-a Want You, If, The Guitar Man, Aubrey
It's so great you discovered Bread! The guy can sing but they're also killer songwriters, so many good ones to suggest. If you ever get back around to them check out If, Aubrey, Everything I Own, Guitar Man... good stuff thanks for the reaction. 😁
This is my favourite Bread song. David Gates also had a wonderful song called The Goodbye Girl, which was the title/theme song for the movie of the same name.
A perfect review of the amazing David Gates’s vocal style. We need more Bread examinations to show how incredible this band and leader was in the 70’s.
Member for member, musical capabilities as a gauge, Bread were one of the most talented bands ever. Very underappreciated. David Gates is quite a legend. Thanks for this. Back then the time spent developing your artistry was a serious task.
My favorite song by them is 'Aubrey'...It seems like they were never given the credit they deserved. It's good that you did this 'reaction' video. Thanks
Beloved of the eternal, I don't understand your language, but nothing is needed to understand you, except through your eyes...that enjoy the blessed song that reaches our heart and conscience...we feel it through the song and its gestures and feelings that together we touch the supreme divinity... the eternal absolute that dwells in us...
We were so blessed back in the 60s & 70s when I was growing up. We had so many artists like Bread, The Carpenters, Linda Ronstadt, Jim Croce, etc. that were just right for the time. I was more the rocker back in the day, and didn't fully appreciate these artists at the time. That has clearly changed over the years, and I so appreciate them all now. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Bread and David Gates were a great band. David Gates had a gorgeous voice. You need to listen to him sing their song "If". He goes into his falsetto seamlessly and it is wonderful.
Thank you, Bethany. It's always fresh how you react, and never tiresome. That makes me smile as much as I smiled during this song. Such a velvety lightness, I can imagine how girls swoon in the audience, and a reception of a cheering stampede. At times, David Gates' voice reminds me of John Denver's voice, also smooth with great strength of expression.
1970's music was the best, I am thankful to be in my late teens and 20's that decade. David Gates who is from Tulsa Oklahoma and Bread were ultra great!
Oh my gosh. I grew up loving Bread (early 70s). How did you find your way here? I loved your reactions. Thank you so much. The style of harmonies that many bands in that era seemed to go for were wonderful.
I learn a lot here. Not only is Beth is a pro she's also very genuine and likeable. Her personality and enthusiasm help me learn more than some other "reactionists". In my pre-pubescent life (and even later) hearing David Gates always soothed me. He was at the forefront of "soft rock." Somewhat like Glen Campbell but with less recognition, and sadly so. A great musician. And he's still with us!
Bread is famous for their ballads but they can rock out too. Try Mother Freedom and Let Your a Love Go. Bread had some notable musicians. Larry Knechtel was an amazing multi instrumentalist who arranged and played the piano on Bridge Over Trouble Waters. Bread also had James Griffin as the other guitarist/vocalist/songwriter. Have a listen to one pf his contributions Look What You Done. BTW he co wrote the Academy winning song For All We Know in 1971.
Bethany, I don't always understand your explanation of what you hear, but am amazed at your knowledge and discerning ear. Your expressions as you listen to the song is charming. That song took me back to my high school years. David Gates had my favorite line in a song ever - "...if a man could be in two places at one time, I'd be with you." You are amazing.
Goodness! I've never heard anything but the studio version of this song when played occasionally on the radio. The live version is incredible. Gorgeous tone and exceptional enunciation! Thank you so much for bringing this back to me--I'll be humming/singing it all day long! So beautiful a message, too! Great song!
If this is your first time listening to Bread, you have a huge rabbit hole to go down. Nothing embodies the laidback soft side of the 70’s better then they do. Love your reaction ❤
When this was published in 1965, David Gates had been married (at 19) for 6 years. Today, at 84, he’s STILL married to the one he wanted to make it with! Other great Bread songs include If, Everything I Own, Diary, and Ima Want You.
Your reactions are delightful. I started watching reaction videos for the enjoyment of watching people discover the music that I grew up listening to through the last sixty-six years and you are one of my favorites. This is a never ending journey. Enjoy it. I am.
I've always liked "Make it with You". I remember hearing it for the first time when I was just seven years old - it is such a peaceful, soothing piece of music, the kind that leaves you feeling that all is well with the world. 'Ethereal' as a descriptor for the song absolutely nails it. And the lyrics, "Dreams are for those who sleep, life is for us to keep" had a profound impact on me.
I've seen you analyze Eddie Vedder, Chris Cornell, and now David Gates, some of my faves! Having no musical training background, I'm thoroughly enjoying the nuts-and-bolts dissection of the mechanics of these voices that move so many of us. We didn't know why they were set apart from others technically-- we just FELT IT! Awesome job, and fascinating! Thank you❤
It’s hard to believe you haven’t heard Bread before. There’s many iconic songs and if you look sometimes you will find a different version which is equally as good as the original. I know the words to all their hits and more.
David Gates has a very beautiful voice and the song they did that really encapsulates not only that sweet voice but his haunting voice is the song Aubrey. One of the most beautiful and heart breaking songs ever.
I saw Bread in concert in August 1977. They played at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, NC. I'm so glad I got to see them before they disbanded. Their songs will never go out of style. James Griffin was a great singer/songwriter, too.
I recently lost my Dad , and he always had there songs playing in the car when i was a child. I Instantly felt happy hearing the opening line if this song just there. They have such a unique sound . Great vid and analysis 👏🏻👏🏻
His voice SHIMMERS at just the right moments, and he can hold and let go-control and release-to create the maximum meaning. There’s almost no separation between the words and the music-perhaps the very definition of a great song sung beautifully.
I used to play "Make It With You" when I was a street musician back in Dallas years ago. I've had 2 married couples come up to me, request this song, then tell me that I had played it for them way back on thier very first date.
For most of my life, I've been attracted to music just off the beaten path...I prefer Waits to Dylan, The Misfits to The Clash, Bauhaus to The Smiths, and Tool to just about everything else. But Bread is an exception. The songwriting is so spot-on, the message so clear in a genre like easy listening, where so much is lost in the muck. Imagine in your mind an eighteen year old kid sharing a trailer off campus his freshman year of college (1989), and imagine music blaring out of that trailer, songs by Danzig, Slayer, The Cure, Depeche Mode, The Violent Femmes,...and Bread. Love these songs...
Thanks for doing one from Bread. David Gates is from right here in Tulsa. That's why I love their music so much-- they played so much of it on the radio here back in the day. You're right, his voice is very intact and smooth, I always thought like silk. You should also try 'If' and 'Diary', and you MUST listen to 'Aubrey'!! Oh-- and 'Guitar Man' too.
As much as I was a hard rock/metal band lover, and still am.. I’m 68, Bread was a band that I always liked a lot. If you were in love back then David Gates and Bread made you feel even more in love. Great choice for an analysis.. 👍
This song always brings me back to waiting for a flight at Honolulu International Airport back in the 70s. It was one of my earliest memories of seeing my parents in bellbottom jeans, lol.
This song brings back so many memories. And just hearing the first verse and first few notes you know you're in for something special. Another great song and vocalist/group from the 70's. And Bethany, you described his voice perfectly - like butter. Guess you could say Bread with Butter! (pun intended) Thank you for bringing us another great one!
I loved Bread growing up, and have a few of their lp's. As said, If is one of the most beautiful songs written. And 11:30 David sings it so beautifully. "If" is also a short song. Dairy is a heartache sog, with a twist. Nice reaction
This is such a wonderful tune, and David's voice is always so smooth. I remember hearing songs from Bread all throughout the 1970s on the radio. Thanks for bringing back some great memories!
David Gates mom is from Lyman, Wyoming. After his mom and dad married, Clarence Gates, moved his family back east so David's dad could teach music at the college level. They eventually settled in Oklahoma. David's maternal Rollins family come from Western cattle ranching and farming scratching out a living in the Bridger range of Wyoming... David's uncles and aunts were wonderful singers many moved into the professional college and sciences. I recall attending Rollins family reunions where they would gather around the piano and was so impressed and can still hear the rich tenors, baritones and sopranos and full voices of my great aunts and uncles singing together. It was a blast to attend Bread concerts in the 1970's. David's generation is fast slipping to the other side of life. David is the youngest of that generation. David and Jo Rita's children are very well grounded despite their Dad's hard fought eventual success in music. His children reside in the greater California area working in law, medicine and business. David and Jo Rita, now retired reside in the Pacific North West. I'm blessed to be an extended cousin and family member..
A fantastic group, fantastic album that my husband of 45 years and I listened to over and over together when we first started going together back in 1975. Every time I hear these songs I go back in time. ❤️
I remember being at the dentist in 1977 and listening to this song while I was getting a root canal. It was soothing and calming. I’ve always remembered that moment. Such a great song!!
Vocalist, you fell in love with David in the first 30 seconds of this song.!
David Gates is now 83 years old, born Tulsa, Oklahoma. He and Bread were a fantastic band. Thank you Bethany.
Wow!, It's hard to think of him as 82. Or that I am almost there too. Great music many have missed.
Yes, and to think, he's one of the few performers still around who is older than me, but not by much! I can relate...@@magpie471

I like the way you express your feeling on your face. It's so lovely. I subscribe your lovely channel from today.
I recently lost my Dad , and he always had there songs playing in the car when i was a child. I Instantly felt happy hearing the opening line if this song just there. They have such a unique sound . Great vid and analysis 👏🏻👏🏻
I’m 74 and still perform his songs… One of the greatest voices of all time! 🎤❤️
His voice SHIMMERS at just the right moments, and he can hold and let go-control and release-to create the maximum meaning. There’s almost no separation between the words and the music-perhaps the very definition of a great song sung beautifully.
Lovely. Definitely do more Bread if you can. Not even the extent of his range on display here, and a truly incredible songwriter too
I used to play "Make It With You" when I was a street musician back in Dallas years ago.
Those were the days. Oh my....
Takes me back to warm summer days as a kid swimming with friends and not a care in the world!
Some of us were fortunate to grow up listening to Bread, & I still enjoy listening, Great Song & Band
Thank you. I’ve always been a big fan of the band Bread.
Listen to more David Gates and Bread. So rewarding and melancholy journey thru the 70s soft rock. One of my face artist/songwriters of that decade!!
One of my favorite bands.
I believe David had a cattle ranch in Oklahoma after Bread
A fantastic group, fantastic album that my husband of 45 years and I listened to over and over together when we first started going together back in 1975. Every time I hear these songs I go back in time. ❤️
I remember being at the dentist in 1977 and listening to this song while I was getting a root canal. It was soothing and calming. I’ve always remembered that moment. Such a great song!!
This song has been on my anti stress playlist since when I was making mix tapes on cassettes.
"Guitar Man" is my favorite Bread song.
