The best part of this game is by far the developers. They made this AFTER Dark Moon, a game that was widely disliked. They took notes from what worked in the original, and what worked in dark moon, and they put together the best aspects of both games. I’m so excited for the future because I believe that they will think of what worked for this game and what didn’t and apply it to make an even better future title. I really hope they keep being the developers for this series because they’re doing an amazing job.
Oh how I yearn for paper Mario to get the luigis mansion treatment. Its was honestly really great LM could add on new ideas while still keeping the base formula, and appease both size of the fandom without causing much discord

Imagine, you get Mario out of the portrait and you two run up the mansion, getting to the roof as you begin to dark light the Princess out of her Painting King Boo smashes Mario in a painting and fills is with the purple spirit orbs and, after some stirring, Mario comes out of the painting, his features twisted to look more ghostly and begins attacking Luigi. That would have been a much better boss fight concept with Mario and King Boo fighting Luigi IMO
In retrospect it feels weird that there was so much love and effort put into Luigi's acting and personality animation but not quite as much effort put in to everyone else? He doesn't get a solid chance to bounce off anyone else after the intro sequence, and it leaves everyone elses presence and motivation feeling like a bit of an afterthought in comparison. Not that the ghosts don't have personality, but they don't really feel like they exist outside of being foil to Luigi, which is something the first game did beautifully. You really felt like you were interrupting their afterlives in the first game, but this one had me feeling like they existed purely for Luigi's sake more than anything. I really liked the idea of other ghosts being there as guests with zero idea who he was or that there was a revenge plot against him, that might have given a few of them an indifferent or even charitable distance from Luigi as the main character that would have exaggerated boss encounters and made them feel even more theatric.
According to the devs, Gooigi probably tastes like coffee (because his origin was explained as, "E. Gadd was experimenting with ghost ectoplasm and some other shit, but then spilled coffee on it and it became a sentient blob. He then showed it footage of Luigi to condition it into looking and acting like Luigi, because that's not creepy.")
l absolutely adore this game, it's one the few games l can replay over and over without getting bored. Having said that it has flaws, the game clearly had some cut content, l don't think it's a coincidence that the polter kitty shows up when the floor you just completed was short. lt feels like it's trying to compensate for something, it would be nice if the chases slightly more interesting like the toad mission in basement 2(not that involved but you get my point) but they're literally just about chasing a cat through areas you've already seen. Also l wish the collectibles had some kind of reward attached to them beyond the satisfaction of getting them all, perhaps a costume or something. Great game overall, l hope they continue with the series.
You actually do get something for catching all the Boo's and obtaining all the gems, which is a picture on your flashlight and a diamond plunger respectively that you can use in multiplayer.

Okay, crazy epiphany, but while playing the game I kind of wished that capturing all of the Boos or Gems would get a different ending or affect the King Boo boss fight somewhat. Like, say prevent him from getting bigger and skipping a couple phases to his final phase. Then I had an epiphany. Of Gooigi using the power of the gems to power up his ectoplasmc body into a giant that Luigi can control within, perhaps a second Gooigi of a second color can be split from Gooigi for this Giant Gooigi and King Boomongus boss fight.
Gotta say, I feel like Luigi's Mansion has always been linear. The Original Mansion had you exploring rooms in a set order, getting pulled out after each area, of which there were five. Five mansions in Luigi's Mansion 2 for 5 areas and the 5 fights that are for portrait ghosts. The first and third game also both have some small areas where you choose what to do first. Like how you can choose whether to fight Sue Pea or Vincent van Gore first can be compared to the order that you complete rooms in F15
Ginourmus King Boo vs Giga Goo-igi using the hotel itself as a poltergust backpack. With Hellen and Luigi either standing on top of them or piloting them from the inside like mechs. Now that would have been an ending
Luigi's mansion is like a really good restaurant, with a desert menu that could be good for new customers or boring for customers that have had the same desert before and want something new. Appetizer and main meal is still fantastic.
I feel like the only reason why they keep reusing king boo is because they can't think of anything else that makes sense but then again, that just makes me wonder why they don't just give luigi a new villain to end the journey off with. Maybe a ghost that in life was similar to luigi that kidnaps the gang because he wants the friends that he was never able to make and only fights luigi because he's jealous of how courageous luigi is (this part would be purposefully ironic by the way), i've never liked king boo all that much so I do wish they could do something else with the final boss but atleast the fights themselves are mechanically different.
I think they mostly stick to King Boo because, in essense, he's Luigi's Bowser. And a lot of Luigi fans/apologists seem to relish in the idea of Luigi finally having a rival to call his own

@5:27 Correct me if I'm wrong, but when looking at some of those little promo article on the nintendo switch's "news" section (yeah that red speech bubble thing that I'm pretty sure very few people use although I could be mistaken on that too) there was this "lore" of sorts about the creation of Gooigi and I think it mentioned that he either had a taste or scent of coffee, not sure if its canon or not but I'd like to think so. Hopefully someone knows what I'm talking about lmao
I fully understand any criticism towards the co-op mode but that’s how I experienced it with my husband. I was a mean green sucking machine right at the start but it was awesome seeing him grow and catch on to finding secrets and having my back in the bigger bashes. All of it came to a fantastic climax having my husband square up to the final boss and do better than I was. I will always hold LM3 not as a spooky house I had joy exploring, but as a great bonding experience with someone I love.
I did like what they did with king boos personality in this game, it was a great way of setting him up as luigis rival ala bowser to mario, but all the while keeping it different enough to be unique. King Boo is genuinely hateful towards luigi for the previous games and the anger shows well in his boss fight. But I do feel like some things were missed or down played in this. I felt genuinely disappointed to see they kept the ghost pup from LM2 but opted NOT to use him in game play, kinda felt like he could have replaced gooigi and been more interesting, and while the floors were unique like LM1's rooms the floors start to feel like they drag on too long and over stay their welcome, especially the basement and top most floors. And finally Im still sad the money you pick up is all but useless, yeah it changes the ending but only so slightly and that feels more like a jab at luigi than it actually contributing to game play, all that time and effort grabbing millions of dollars just to give it away to the ghosts at the end rather than have it be useful in any meaningful sense.
I haven't played this game , but do the bosses really not have any background on them? The boss ghost view screen seems to just be, look at their model and see their name? no age, years, bio??

LM3's setting stopped feeling like a hotel after a certain point, and really fell apart. It stopped feeling like one coherent area at all. Even moreso since the floors don't really connect - switching between them with an elevator isn't a whole lot different from switching between them with a teleporter. Further, all the special ghosts having no purpose or goals beyond attacking Luigi really damages the game world feeling like a lived-in (ha) space. LM1 did it better. You were intruding into their space and into their lives - they weren't just out to _get_ you because the area needs a boss.
I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought that the film maker ghost looked like Mike Actually, what if it was intentional? Mike DOES believe in ghosts, and IS a film maker
For me, I feel like the game took too much of a cartoony style, it felt more like Fortnite cartoony at times and not Mario cartoony. And the ghosts became too human looking and actually eerie. I felt like the charm of the first game is the bosses looked like a cartoony humans and the normal ghosts looked like Ghouls and Monsters.
The button-stealing cat levels were the absolute worst in my opinion. The last of those encounters actually made me take a break from the game for a few days. Overall 2/3 of this game was amazing but that 1/3 was more than just bad for me -- it was awful and almost ruined the game. Quality video review/retrospective though. I just recently came across your channel while looking up Sly Cooper content and was impressed by the quality/polish of your videos. Keep up the good work.
Maybe it's just me but one thing that bugged me about LM3 was that Luigi won this trip to the hotel, but he invites his brother and his brother's girlfriend along with her servants as his additional guests Why didn't they use Daisy? I know Nintendo kinda tries to say she's not Luigi's girlfriend but still I find it weird her and Luigi are so closely linked but she's not in any of the Mansion games.

Yup, it's sadly just that. They get a lot of time in other ways but they've kept all background details out on this one.
