For myself, I start with the speakers on the same plane as the windshield, then aim to the dome light and adjust from that point. so far has been a good start point.
justkiddin1980 couldn’t agree more.....my dad would listen to this when I was a kid on his mark levinson based system and I remember being in awe of that sound. I have been attempting to achieve that sound ever since
i am so happy and feel so satisfied that you chose a coaxial style speaker with it's own built in crossover. People doesn't know the role of a crossover (tuning, phase alignment, bad acoustics) and they put speakers and tweeters all over the place with a single capacitor on the tweeter, thinking that they listen to music out of that. I think you should mention that in one of your videos so car audio can be a good quality thing one day..
Nailed it as always. Good suggestions on live music, I like to listen to songs on my Cans and Headphone amp, then compare them to the car. Still loving the choice on the Illusion Audio!
Can these a-pillar mounted tweeters actually sound good without a lot of tuning and dsp work? I tried some JL Audio components and the tweeter was just so in my face it sounded terrible. I switched to coaxials and it sounds so much better. I had the same problem in my old Ford piece of crap F-150 with Focal components and ended up with Pioneer D series coaxials that sounded a lot smoother and not so harsh.
One of the best tracks I've found to listen for positioning (imaging), is Phantom of the Opera (Canadian cast), track 8, Notes - Prima Donna. It has several performers that are at different points across the stag, and different depths. It starts with two performers at extreme ends of the stage, who do eventually move to different points on the stage. Other performers are just off center, or mid way between center and extreme left or right, along with testing the dynamic range of a system. There's also a point where the Phantom comes into the track, and he SHOULDN'T sound like he comes from any single point. There are many other good tracks on that soundtrack, but that one stands out as one that is great for testing imaging.
It's very well produced, and sounds great, all through the performances. I was able to see it live twice, sadly not with the cast that is on the recorded version. If you like the music, I know not everyone likes musical theater, it will become one of your go to recordings when testing any system. :)
Does Doug aka Soundman know you're copying off his wall of names?? LOL, be seriously..... I picked up a pair of components and it's for a truck that doesn't have stock tweeter locations, the pillars have flat surface that aim towards the windshield so if I use that spot as off axis will it reflect back towards the front seats ok? Will it create an unwanted noise reflection?? Thanks
I want to do this with my ford flex and my JL Audio C5-653s but flushed. Just ordered some extra a pillars to start working on them. I wanted to go the C7 route but no signature shop near me actually has them in stock or a demo station of the 3 way C7s. 🤦♂️ i cant just buy something for $2,400 dollars for a front stage with out hearing thwm first and see if its worth it. Ive heard and own the C5s and really like those.
Hey Mark love your videos I have a question for you though have you built a sub enclosure for a 2013 or newer Dodge ram 1500 crew cab I have a 12 inch pioneer champion series sub with double stacked magnets it's massive and I really wanted to fit in my truck but most places I go to say that that's too big I love to see a video or just your input On want you think .....I need about 7 1/2 inch mounting depth thanks
I love these videos, but when I think of the required effort, I wonder if a shop within 100 miles of my house would do this. Why buy high end speakers when the end result will be impacted by a half-a$$ install.
Low frequency wavelengths are longer, so you want the to be as much room as possible between the front of the sub and the next surface so the wavelength can form before being absorbed, diffused, or reflected.
Hey mark first off keep up the good work..I know you do a lot of vehicles but there is a big craze down in Cali a lot of people are putting systems on there watercraft like Waverunners, sea doo etc..The question is I just purchased 2 Waverunners xl1200 i want too put a system on them can you recommend a waterproof system and would I need too upgrade my battery. don’t really know if you are familiar with the charging, waterproof equipment that is on the market. Your knowledge would be greatly appreciated thanks..
+Aspen Ramirez link in the description to a test. I don't play music because anything good is going to have copyright and most people watch UA-cam on their phones and I don't want the endless comments of how it doesn't sound good when people can't grasp that what their phone is playing isn't the same thing you hear in person. Even if you have a good system UA-cam compresses the audio like crazy
Need some help for tweeter location. Want to flush mount here ibb.co/wW8mCzW (don't have the means to customize a pillar) but the tweeters would be pointing at the dash. Should I choose a different location or would tweeters that swivel be okay here?
U can use 2 amps together hes wrong if ur using a dual voice coil sub just have 1 amp on one coil n one on the other use a multimeter to make sure ur amps are putting out same power .. have be same amp they dont have to be strapable tho
Joe Rico well first u said u cannot do it unless there strappable.. i run 2 kicker kx 1200.1 on 2 l7 12 inch subs . One amp on one coil of each sub n the other on the other coil. Thats why i said to use a multimeter to measure the output from each amp to have them push the exact same power.. even if they are off by .2 volt or what ever it is definetly not going to ruin the sub unless the voltage is off by alot just need to make sure its close as possible
For myself, I start with the speakers on the same plane as the windshield, then aim to the dome light and adjust from that point. so far has been a good start point.
why not show your final aiming point? I know it's car and speaker specific, but would still like to see where you ended up optimizing those coaxes.
My vote goes to The Eagles Hotel California live...great recording

Is that what is called "POP" music? when the speaker comes flying at you with the airbag.
OMG!!!!! I was watching this older video to refresh my memory and you mentioned Alice In Chains!!! Yep I knew you were cool!!
You must like mad season as well being it’s layne as well
UA-cam should have a two thumbs up button. Great work Mark.
How did you maintain the speaker positioning once you removed everything again?
Nailed it as always. Good suggestions on live music, I like to listen to songs on my Cans and Headphone amp, then compare them to the car. Still loving the choice on the Illusion Audio!
What kind of speakers did you use in the video
I love the Laser pointer idea. Fantastic!
My jaw dropped when you said Alice in Chains. One of the best live recordings in my opinion. The MTV Unplugged audio crew was on the ball that night.
It sounds so good, the drum recording and the midbass on the kick... Ahhh sounds so good.
That and the dual vocals on the No Excuses track.
No excuses from that album is my reference track! Well, one of them anyway
what about rear passenger positioning?
We’re is the best spot for a tweeter

+TurboHawkV6 nice, I'll have to check that out

Alice in chains unplugged, Eric Clapton unplugged, Pink Floyd the wall, Tool, all A+ discography imo.
So where do I get my laser holding adaptive aiming tool?
Just order your aiming tool!!! Can't wait to try it out!
Ah! The wonderful illusions, been wanting to get a set myself!
Also, is that other video you teased about (the sound demo) a patreon exclusive?
Mark and his CAF vids are the Khan Academy of Car Audio!
I used a expandable cellphone holder for my 4X6 component plates was going to get a tablet one for larger ones
Ditto on Alice In Chains Unplugged. Rooster has been my go-to track for tweaking my sound system since that album first came out.

Protip: change pitch and or slow the song down to avoid copyright

9:18 ...i can never find the link for the 'separate video' of the *AUDIO TEST* am i missing it?
Great videos... i am a shop owner my self its nice learning new tips and tricks ........
I want to buy it but its out of stock, can you help me?
Will this apply to an open cab like in side x side offroad vehicle? Any tips for an offroad vehicle with no windows? Thx for sharing your expertise!!
That's a pretty nice looking speaker how come it doesn't have a built-in crossover why would you need an extra crossover
If I aim the tweeters right up at the headliner like you said to, is that considered on axis or off axis?
Alice In Chains - Unplugged sounds great.
I test using The Cinematic Orchestra.
about where on the ceiling did you end up aiming the drivers for your application?
It doesn't matter, every application is different. You shouldn't copy my application.
Fantastic! Finally understood how to make positioning.
Mark where's your audison system setup at like Doug has 😁
Any idea where to mount a crossover on a 2004 GMC Sierra? Can I go in the door?
I love these videos, but when I think of the required effort, I wonder if a shop within 100 miles of my house would do this. Why buy high end speakers when the end result will be impacted by a half-a$$ install.
Definitely just ordered that laser pointer.
Where do I order some of them speaker aiming towels? 🤔
🤣🤣🤣
What's the reason for facing your subwoofer backward in your truck
rawbasic rawbasic for optimal bass performance. Depending on sub/box/vehicle.
In his jeep it's facing sideways. Anyway he made a whole video about this.. ua-cam.com/video/tPIu-OTMwRk/v-deo.html
rawbasic rawbasic more spl

Still can't find anything like this
ur the man mark!
Do u sell that laser holder thing? Is it on thingverse or anything??
Ha wasn't expecting you to drop on AIC mtv for fine tuning! A great choice though :) Cheers
What speakers are those? They look nice. I can't find a link regarding the make/model of speakers. Thanks
awesome speakers short list for sure
Great laser tool!
Love the detail but hate that h dont play any music from the systems for a simple demo of example

$75 shipping for that speaker aiming tool to Canada! Come on man!
Get a piece of ply-board cut to approximate size of speaker... drill hole in center... place your laser in center hole... DUH!!!
Right on fella 🤙I wouldn't have figured he could dig some Alice in Chains, the more you know I suppose!

Hey man watsup? Am new in the sound world....wat i wud like to kno if i can connect to amps together to boost my bass speaker? Its a mini amp btw.
Ok thanks alot man....well appreciated....

Heh. Replacing Focal speakers to improve audio. Sometimes these channels really do feel like first world problems. Still great content, though.
it's science. :D
