Man pete.. I cant even tell you... I look so forward to every single video from you. Very rare to find a fabricator in the U.S who pays attention to the smallest details... i just finished .30 cubed kicks using the same method i learned from you. I love watching and learning! Keep up the great work you are much appreciated!
There are actually quite a lot of REALLY GREAT fabricators in the U.S., and I could probably list 30 off the top of my head from all over the country.
And all of them do very fine, detailed work. I don't know why you think they are rare?
Maybe because they are not "popular" UA-camrs and don't advertise or produce videos like Peter's because they are just too busy actually doing the work. But there are plenty of amazing fabricators out there.
But, just like with Pete's builds, you are going to pay a premium for that level of skill and knowledge.

A lot of installers I know are afraid to reveal their 'techniques' in fear of losing a potential customer. I love car audio as a hobby because I like listening to great sounding quality music in my car but I know my limits when it comes to fabrication. This video is very helpful in making that next leap into this craft to understanding the method to the madness. Am I going to do it anytime soon? I don't know. Likely not. I'd rather pay someone to do it. But we always have a fall back video thanks to Pete.
I also believe that's what many installers think. The issue is... A person who is determined to do something themselves, they will learn to do it because it's fun. Because they feel good doing their system by their own. This gives them satisfaction, even though it is difficult for the average joe. These types of people will not be potential customers anyways. So there's no harm in showing it.
The people that look at this video and say "that's way too complicated for me" will always resort to pro installers. So nothing to lose.

When you stir filler when mixing you add air bubbles into it. If you feel you have to do it that way, spread the filler out in a straight line pressing down with your putty spreader to push them out before you start applying. Using a 2 part glazing putty for your final spread will will level out really nice and will require less sanding too. You can even add fiberglass resin (mixed properly) to your regular filler for more flow as well.

Peter, once gain your skills that you share are top notch! I have followed you since the beginning, and over the past 3 years have built 3-4 different a-pillars for my own Jeep. Each one, became better and better, I think I have finally nailed it!!! I figured out my own "milkshake" made a hell of a mess several times trying, lol. I completely understand the time frame to make YT videos, I have been showing my off road camper build on my channel....lots of work for 10 minutes!! I might have to to some YT of them, I have so much footage of my a-pillars, sub boxes, etc.....including screwing shit up!! I will be looking into your Patreon in the new year, hopefully this Covid passes soon and finances are once again better. Thank you for all you have shared. @@pssound9749 youtube-connecting people;-) To be honest SQ life is very poor, most young guys tend to build SPL project's, maybe early deafness)), maybe the absence of music taste. Anyway, SQ is not so cheap hobby, and many people do not understand how you can spend so much $ and effort, just to feel your self as you on your sofa listening to music, but you are in a traffic jam when other's around you listening to terrible noises.

I spent about 25 hours total on my pillars that are only for some Utopia M 3.5wm mids. After you get the aiming right, building the structure isn't that bad. It's reinforcing everything and then applying the filler and sanding that takes most of the time. I use a pistol grip air DA with 3", 2" and 1" attachments and that speeds up the process. If you had to sand by hand it would take 3 times as long. You end up doing multiple applications as you fine tune the shape and make them symmetrical in appearance as much as you can depending on the angles. I chose equal off axis so that the drivers side measures 30 degrees off axis and the passenger is about 7 degrees off axis. The Utopia M's will measure about the same in my desired frequency range. My tweeters are both exactly 15 degrees off axis to the driver and right over 20 degrees to the passenger. Both tweeter and mid are oriented to maximize single seat tune with 2 seat tunability in mind for future competition. The drivers aren't just randomly placed, there is thought and planning involved.

Hey Peter, I was literally just signing up to your Patreon and seen that you actually planned to come here. Unfortunately I don’t have anything decent as yet. At the moment I just have some Alpine-R components installed in factory locations (doors/A-pillar’s) running off an Alline PDX-V9 Tbh it sounds sound great at all but your videos have inspired me to start a new setup from scratch. I doubt I’d even have everything before May/June. Can I ask do you plan on coming here in the future? If not it’d be great ti at least meet you this time round at least.
@@Jeenzy79 well, even the current plan for this year is a proposal, it’s not guaranteed if i don’t have min 3 people signed up for the training. It’s a pretty crazy expense to travel down there and to leave my daily life and business behind too, so we’ll see what happens.
Personally me & wife would love to visit Australia again as we had an amazing experience last year, but it’s all about interest and budget management.

for years I thought it really didn't matter and I prefer the sound hitting the windshield with the highs from the tweeters and so forth. I was so wrong. There are really some absolute great advantages for having the tweeters in the driver's name that you on access and I have to admit if you could do that with midbass drivers even better.
for years I thought a three-way system would probably be best it still has its merits put in a vehicle I have to admit having a very good two-way system well there is this wonderful thing about Imaging and Driver placement then happens when you're able to go and do that with a wide range driver up at the top where your ears are and have it cover as much frequency as possible and have the door speaker do its job of lower mid Bass.

Think of how the fibre glass will handle ☀️ summer heat too. I used cut pvc pipe which was good as fibre glass sections slightly caved in summer time but the trimmed and stitched black leather can stretch and warp the whole A pillar too.

Was going to ask you which size threaded insert you are using but then 3rd watch I caught it ;-) May I ask what size to use for tweeter and the bigger stuff like SBP15 / IB15AU? This is the path I’m going with my build. Also I think a dedicated video on fixings, ferrules and things like that would be well received. Thanks again Peter!
Subs usually need M5-M6, depends on the basket and mounting hole size.

I am just about to do this 2-way on a Jeep Wrangler JKU Hard Rock.
Plus a 6" in the front bottom of the front door, and an 8" in the back of the door. (fab lower half of the door, then leather covered.).. not sure on the back 2 doors if it will just be a set of 6x9 for space from the wheel well cut-out.

Those pillars are beautiful I love the plywood strips method. Btw Is taking like a 4" coaxial driver separating the tweeter at the terminals bypassing the factory bass blocker/cap on the tweeter and bi amping them or hooking them to an actual 3 way crossover for the midrange and tweeter (with a midbass driver in the door) in a 3 way system? is that a thing does anyone ever do that? Seems like with a decent quality coaxial it would work fine, maby not as good as seperates but pretty good... Any input would be appreciated, thanks.

Well I wasn't really focused on the crossovet setup it's going active when I can swing the extra components, it was mainly asking even tho it's not the standard practice and not the optimal setup but the opinion on the viability splitting up the connections and bi amping 4" coaxials drivers for mids and highs on a 3 way. But whatever no biggie thanks for even taking the time to read and reply at all. Love seeing your craftsman you do it's always beautiful.✌️
Waltzs budgetBumpin oh you definitely have the best chance to try that first with a coax as you don’t need time-alignment between mid + tweeter. Even if you just bi-amp them, you can still set levels independently, but once you can select X-over and independent EQ for each in fully active configuration, things can go to another level! 👌🔊🔊 However, tuning becomes more complex too. 😖

I'm just curious as to why you are not yet using plastics such as HDPE, Sintra/PVC, Perspex, Marine/King Starboard, or ABS, etc for your door mounted speaker baffles/rings?
Is it too expensive in the U.K.? I like HDPE for thicker baffles such as the ones you made here for the midbass drivers because it is much more dense (heavier, more concentrated mass) compared to any wood and it's obviously 100% waterproof.
It's still extremely easy to cut and shape like wood, and it's also easy to create threaded mounting holes directly into the material using thread taps, which reduces the extra time and expense of using threaded inserts. And there are threaded inserts made for plastics as well.
bb foto it’s mainly supply and cost related. When i can i use perspex for smaller speakers or steel rings. I’ll definitely make a move on HDPE next year even if clients can not afford it! We can’t charge $100-200/h here like shows over there.

First of all I must thank you for all those great videos that you are making. I have one question about what "tools" you use when aming your speakers? Some people use their eyes. Some use laser pointers and other people just place them where they fit best. I am about to start my A-pillar project and dont know any easy way to get them installed at the right angle.

Pete, do you ever have any issues with heavy drivers in pillar builds, do they ever pull the panel from it's clip mounts?
Hi, if there is no stretch on the pillars and they kept their original form, then the clips hold very tight, never had issue with them.
Ive been thinkin that bamboo mite be the perfect wood for shaping enclosures and stiffeners. Ever work with it? The japanese do amazing stuff with it. Check out the basket weaving- could make awsome enclosures. Just a thought
Ha! Well, bamboo is used extensively in Asia for similar types of work.
One important distinction: Bamboo is not a wood. It is a form of grass, and that gives it unique properties, one of them being that it does not expand or contract nearly as much as most typical woods do in extreme temperatures.
I use bamboo flooring in my house for that reason because I have radiant heating in the floors via water/glycol tubing encapsulated throughout the insulated concrete slab foundation.

Nice looking pillers. What kind of fiberglass filler did you use? In America we usually use dynatron ultra glass or dyna glass maby evercoat everglass sometimes.
Stormy Young there are all sorts of types. I like ones where the fibreglass strands are small.

It’s actually better to bond to trimmed surface, but may need resin layer at the end and sanded back.

John doe CD is just a transport method, still digital, 44.1kHz 16bit, so if you have the same file quality on a stick, then it should be just as good.

John doe that’s not an issue, pillars don’t fly out when airbag deploys. Check out the Mercedes E63AMG strip out video i shared a week ago, where i explain it too.

Hey Peter, question about these and your other more recent build, How did these ever get trimmed in the end? did you trim them yourself or was it something else like flocking material or just sprayed? I finally got some time to tackle my own mid builds for the audible physics drivers I got and they're now ready for trimming/painting etc but they are very awkward just like these builds in your video (just without the tweeter). I've got some cheap OEM style stretchy fabric on the way for them but I know alcantara would be a no go unless it was stitched panels, so I was considering flocking them like a rally dash or maybe just try stretchy vinyl.... how have you tackled these difficult builds? I'd like your feedback/comments on the build if I could send a picture or two on the FB page or public group.

Hi! I've fabricated many kick panels in my time and I'm getting ready to do some 3" a pillars for the first time. I know the best angle for kick panels after a few tries. Can you tell me the best angle for the a pillars? They're wideband 3" drivers. It looks like you aim them straight at the headrests of each seat on the side of that a pillar which to me would seam like you'd only hear the speaker right in front of you. Do you use time alignment to get a better stereo input to your ears? If you don't want to share your secret, no worries. I'm sure there are variables like what speaker being used, the interior of the car, etc. Just wondering? Thanks, love your videos!

"Finish it in a day", lmao. It took me a day just to find the optimal driver response with in available positions. Another day cutting rings and preping and chopping pilars. 3rd day shaping and filling or fiber glass. 4th day final sand and paint. Took me 5 long days on my 1st build.
If your not going to do it right and try to get the best sound possible, why even do it in the first place?
There is a ton of work that goes into making pilar pods. Its not easily and if your not a skilled craftsman, I can see this taking 2 weeks after you fix all your mistakes.

It is more difficult and a lot of weight there are simpler and lighter weight options. This is not for the woofer, but only for the tweeter and midrange. Why not tighten everything with plastic. Probably 500 grams of putty went. For work 5+ and for idea 5+ but price quality 2-

What's the purpose of the drilled holes?
To help the fibre filler to grab onto the structure and bond sufficiently and foes not come apart at a later stage. If you listen carefully he actually explained that bit very well

It's generally very difficult for most adhesives and resins or glues to adhere to most types of plastics due to their molecular properties.
There are specific "plastic surface prep" liquids or plastic "bonding agents" that you can apply to "etch" the surface before you try to bond anything to the plastic surface.
Without the holes to help give it some extra "grip", or at least "roughing up" the plastic surface with a coarse sandpaper, file, or rasp, the newly bonded pod can easily "pop off" if the original plastic part is twisted or bent, just as if you were removing a part from a mold.
And you usually need to flex or bend the A-pillar trim pieces a fair bit to get them reinstalled or when removing them. It's always a delicate process where you just hope that they don't crack or separate.

It’s birch ply, just cut in thin slices on a table saw. You can also use lolly sticks.
Will we see them once installed in the car ?
I hope so. They are already trimmed and fitted. Now it’s the case of when the client has any time to take some footage.

Gabriel R i would rather advise just a single tweeter per side if quality matters for you. If output is important, then get something sensitive and aim it within 20degree of head position of listener.

Are there any specific measurements for pods..? We are following woofer specific measurements while we make woofer enclosures..do we need to consider any such criteria for making pod playing midbass ?
Pods for mids like these play no bass. The more airspace the better for a midrange. 👍🔊🔊
