      @@vizar1337 I’ve actually seen a few analyses that describe Jinx as BPD-coded, and while I think that it can be dangerous to conflate real disorders that affect real people (such as BPD) with characters who are violent and unhinged, it is very likely that the writers of the show had some knowledge of mental illness, and particularly personality disorders while writing Jinx.
      She’s an INCREDIBLE character study for the way that trauma affects childhood psychological development (so long as people don’t stigmatize Borderline Personality Disorder by association, obviously.)

    • @vizar1337
      @vizar1337 Рік тому +2

      @@stellaa_rrose I agree, the vast majority of people who suffer from mental illnesses are not inherently violent. Every mental illness lies on a spectrum from mild to severe. That said, those people who are violent in real life and make the news tend to have more severe disorders, or a multitude of disorders, but they still only represent a fraction of those with severe illness.
      When talking about mental illness in film, movies and TV scripts are never about ordinary events, but rather extraordinary events. Similarly, scripts are written to have maximum conflict, because more conflict is more interesting to watch, and for that reason characters are often written to have extreme traumas or personality traits as it makes for more conflict. Unfortunately, when you bring all of these things together, most characters that are written to have mental illness will have the most extreme cases of illness because it means more conflict within the character and, consequently, more conflict for the story. Having a very mild case of mental illness in a character, in a writers mind, is not worth writing, because you'd be using a lot of a lot of screentime to show something commonplace that doesnt drive the plot forward. Doesn't necessarily make it better or OK to represent mental illness this way in media, but it does give some insight into why mental illness is often portrayed this way.
      Also full disclosure, i'm speaking as someone who works in the film industry, and as someone whose brother has a more extreme form of Bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and psychosis. He is very sweet, funny and kind hearted most of the time. In his worst states of mania, he has also been violent before. Unfortunately most people only remember the bad in people with mental health.

There’s nothing wrong with upping the intensity of a character for film or television, that comes with the territory. "Can they not hear her?" Of course they can hear her. But Vander is giving himself up, not her. Grayson is smart enough to realise that the Vander's peaceful cooperation and avoiding a war in the streets and horrendous bloodshed, not to mention Vander possibly resisting and fighting them from his very close proximity to both of them, is contingent upon them taking him and ignoring Vi. SHE understands the message Vander is sending: "It's either this, or we have a problem".

    Let me preface this by saying I hate Marcus with every fiber of my being and i think he is a moronic asshole.
    But I fear, in this very moment, he safed both Powder _and_ Vi.
    Silco was all ready to kill Powder instantly if she had posed a threat to him. The reason he didn't was becaus he could relate to being "betrayed" by someone very close. That is what safed her.
    Now imagine Vi had come back. She would have put herself between Powder and Silco. Powder, seing that her Sister hadn't actually left her, would have sought shelter with her. She would have _listened_ to her. And Vi would never have given into Silco. Even if he had tried to recruit her, she would have resisted. She would have rather died then work with him. And so Silco would have probably killed her. Vi is a formidable fighter, but she is on her last leg here and some of Silcos guys have barely fought yet. She may have held out, but in the end she would have lost.
    _Now_ we have a Powder who just saw this man kill her beloved Sister who was trying to protect her. Do you think she would go with him? Or would she rather emulate Vi, as she always did and go with the same line as Vi, _never_ to work with Silco? I think that she would do exactly that. and at that point, I think Silco would kill her too. She is no use to him now and the relatablility has gone.
    So in essence, if Marcus hadn't been a prick, both Vi and Powder would be dead. Go figure. This is, of course, speculation, maybe something or someone would have come along and saved them, but as the situation is now, I believe that would have been the outcome

      Silcos goons have just seen Vi demolish about ten of them in thirty seconds. Some of her victims are among them. They were also blown up and nursing injuries. Their morale is likely somewhat shaken at the moment. If Vi picks up a pipe or plank, she'd be dangerous, and her motivation to protect Powder is off the scale. Silco himself is no fighter - his weapons are words. In the face of an unhinged Vi they may just back off.

Would it have changed anything if she told people _point blank_ that Silco killed Vander instead of it just being a rumor?

I've seen so many people being unfair to Vi in this show that is also so sad. Vi is also a kid, she's just seen her whole family being killed by an accident caused by her own sister and lets anger take over.. She then step away to calm herself and is abducted by Marcus letting Powder believe she was abandoned. It's so sad that the only time Vi messes up Silco is there to pick up the pieces and transform Pow in his fav toy.

    'Arcane' is a genre word, not a word specifically tied to this show. In general fantasy, magic has 2 'flavors' or categories. There's arcane magic and divine magic. Divine magic is bestowed from the God or Gods generally (although druid types take it from 'mother earth'), it's powers granted to those entrusted by (the) God(s) to do their work in the world (clerics, priests, druids, etc.). I don't even know if LoL has this type. Arcane magic comes simply from the essence of the world, it's out there able to be harnessed and focused by those that know how (wizards, mages, sorcerers, etc.). Those stones contain arcane magic energy, and Jayce is trying to figure out a way for technology to do that which would ordinarily require a mage.

    • @th3voice
      @th3voice Рік тому +1

      Actually, not exactly. "Arcane" is an english word with a... I think latin root? Possibly greek. It means "hidden, secret, concealed, protected, mysterious", or more specifically, known only by an initiated few, only found when actively sought out. The root word means "chest", and the "arcane" is thus that which is hidden within the chest. It just so happens to accurately DESCRIBE "wizard magic" in D&D and similar settings - using and understanding it requires study, dedication and persistence; it is merely an aptly applied adverb. In our less magically inclined reality, "arcane" is an apt descriptor of such fields as quantum mechanics, jurisprudence, tax codes, astrophysics, programming in COBOL or Fortran or similar languages (or possibly just programming in general).

    • @demise0
      @demise0 Рік тому +2

      @@th3voice While factually true, that's rather pedantic. The use of word in this show isn't from "hey here's a good latin word for secret/hidden stuff". It comes from the familiar term ascribed to a type of magic commonly found in fantasy settings/genre. It's then the use in the fantasy genre that has roots in what you describe.

    I hope to see your future reactions and I'm just saying that you will continue to cry in some particular episode. the series tells us that this isn't Disney and does so using parallels since everything seems to rhyme. 2 cities that will now use magic, one embraces the light and the other the darkness, two young people come together in a dream with a light for all and two sisters separate in the dark, a daring plan that goes well and another that goes wrong , the Hextec well used to change the future and the misuse that condemns it. I hope you recover because some people who watched the series did not return to the fourth episode until days later, others who watch series in a row paused in the third, I don't blame them I watched this episode 3 or 4 times to notice details, like Silco choking was like Powder falling after the explosion, Vander grabbing Silco by the neck was like Vi grabbing Powder's face.

    I don't think that your "magic exposure/contamination" theory is bad. I had similar thoughts, for sure, coming from a place of knowing nothing about the show or League. The question, roughly, is whether the magic is considered equivalent to electricity or nuclear radiation, the two most common... metaphors for how magic works. IE, is it a clean but dangerously powerful source of power, or is it subversive and dangerous in ways we can't fully see or predict? Does it produce lightning bolts and fireballs, or does it cause stuff to spawn extra eyes and tentacles? So far it looks mostly like "electricity" (complete with random and very weird electric arcing) but it's not entirely clear; Heimerdinger certainly seems to see it as a "corrupting" force. Given that I didn't/don't know if League works on H.P.Lovecraft/Mythos rules or a more conventional elemental wizardry type deal, it's difficult to say.
    Deckard is super dead. Mutant Vander broke either his skull or his neck or both, then tossed him aside like a rag doll.
    About Silco's "villainy", I don't really agree, at least not fully, based on what we've seen so far. As regards Vander, he had a very legitimate grievance - I can't really construct a scenario where Vander ends up with Silco, waist deep in the river, attempting to drown him, armed with a knife while Silco is unarmed - AND Vander "has never forgiven himself" for the event - that doesn't make Vander the heavy of that piece. I don't think wanting to settle that score is unreasonable. His motivations are also quite reasonable - after having seen how Piltover TREATS Zaun/the underground, I can't imagine anything more reasonable than wanting to fight for independence from that kind of rule. He is clearly willing to go quite far to achieve that goal, but he does not seem to be doing "evil" for its own sake. He is supremely ruthless, but there is little that he says or does that speaks of outright malice to those that have not clearly arrayed themselves as his enemies. He'd be a terrible person to have around in a peaceful, stable society, at least as he is now, but in an oppressed colony or vassal state undergoing a genocide by toxic environment under negligent, complacent rule, Silco makes sense and is inevitable - until the situation changes drastically, you will have an endless stream of people LIKE Silco emerge from the crucible of Piltover's brutal rule.

    • @sparemobius7430
      @sparemobius7430 Рік тому +5

      for the magic being a corrupting force or more conventional in league... short answer is, yes. They have both, the stones in this episode are crystals that can store magic, without going too in deep on league lore and or spoilers.
      In League though, the magic power can then be used for a number of things, there are other types of magic stones that can be used mind you as seen in Jace's book, including one called petricite for instance that actually absorbs magic, known to be mostly if not only used by the city of Demacia as they hate mages and use its properties to make antimagic weapons and hunt mages. This technology they use here is the hextech a blend of science and magic, it is mostly more the power behind what they use it for, as Jace wanted a magic for everyone pretty much regardless if you were born with the gift, generally pretty safe once it is perfected. It is used to power the runes for a magic spell that a non natural mage could not use basically, so technically could be used for good or bad though. The counterbalance to it is chemtech, which is the dirty often double edged, but cheaper tech made from using often volatile chemicals to get the desired effects, it too is more alchemy than anything really, not too corrupting outside of shimmer for instance which is technically its own thing more like an addictive drug when consumed, this may eventually get retconned but shimmer is not technically mentioned in game prior to a recent champions who may have connections to it, any others are pure speculation (Mundo is very likely) still, but most chemtech in game is green so can be assumed a different chemical.
      Then you have void magic, blood magic, and just plain deals with/magic of demons in league, those are usually very much taboo and tend to corrupt the user or are used by the ones who have already fallen down that path due to "necessity," greed, or what have you and are desperate enough to do it despite the potential consequences. AKA mostly who you could consider villain champions, though there are of course the exceptions.
      So to put it simply, yes what is in arcane is mostly just the traditional type of magic, but league does have the darker kind as well.
      I do like your take on Silco though. Very much agree the way things are, people like Silco are inevitable. Vander was very much like him as we saw in episode 1, ready to fight no matter the cost for their independence, then he saw the abandoned sisters and realized how much pain this was causing and choose to put down his weapons there and work for peace instead. I imagine that would have led to a disagreement with Silco as well, but I guess his temper got the better of him to have him end up in that situation. I imagine Silco didn't want to stop so Vander did anything it would take to stop the violence, including kill his friend, or leave him for dead as the case may be. I don't really see a scenario that leads them to that exact place and situation but eh maybe Silco just liked the view, and they were having a chat by the riverside which got heated, I dunno. From his point of view though he was betrayed and he is not in the wrong, so yea perfectly reasonable motivations behind his character, great antagonist.

    • @th3voice

      @@sparemobius7430 I don't really see Silco in terms of "antagonist". I see him as a... Hmm. SPOILERS AHEAD, SPOILERS AHEAD, DON'T READ ON IF YOU DON'T WANT SPOILERS, MASSIVE BIG SPOILERS COMING RIGHT UP! ... triumph of tragedy writing. He is a razor sharp entity, and the very core of his self image and his conflict with Vander is his stop-at-nothing ruthlessness, and his disdain for Vander's giving up the cause to be a father to random orphans - not an inaccurate assessment, by the way - and in the end, the hardened, honed razor of a revolutionary is undone by the very same weakness. He even realises it himself, is shaken by it, but never truly has time to come to terms with it. It is a triumph of humanity that the cold, merciless revolutionary dies to birth the man and father, who in turn perishes without regrets in service to the one he cares for. It is not irony, as such, because the outcome is never truly cross-purpose, but it is wonderful and mournful how he changes... yet at the same time it is a disaster for Zaun that he dies at the time he does, because it will cause chaos and instability. Silco is the soul of season one, where Jinx is its heart and frayed nerves. If anything, Vi is the antagonist of the piece... though moreso Heimerdinger.

    The only point I'd be tempted to make is that this is a very information-dense series, and generally works in an extremely strong "show, don't tell" manner. As such, it's very easy to miss vital bits of a scene if you're not watching closely. If it feels comfortable, you might want to consider pausing the video when making asides to the camera. Everyone here wants to hear what you have to say, and we also want to you get everything you can out of this terrific show. So don't shortchange yourself - give yourself enough time to expand on your in-the-moment thought, but don't miss any content doing so.

    I don't think you can consider anyone as "the villain". Sure, some are more morally questionable and are willing to do more drastic things to achieve their goals, but to me nobody is all bad or a real villain.
    Basically Vander and Silco fought together against the enforcers, Vander saw what the war costed and decided to step down, which probably lead to a disagreement between him and Silco, which lead to the drowning situation.
    This trauma caused Silco to become ruthless (become what they fear), but he always kept fighting for a fair and independant undercity, he just became a "by every means necessarily" kind of guy.
    Vander then started working with enforcers to keep the peace. Ironically, would you replace the enforcers with for instance Nazi's, we would have been rooting for Silco...
    On a side note, in my opinion Marcus isn't dumb, he is weak, insecure and craves respect/status, but he isn't capable enough to earn it, so he missuses his position to try to get it.

    Excellent finish to this act. Superb storytelling. No worries about not knowing SIlco's name. His name wasn't revealed until this episode, but we knew he had some sort of knowledge or relationship with Vander from the first episode. Vander in Benzo's place when he said there are worse things than Enforcers out there as he rubbed the arm brace where there was a wound and the mystery man at the time intrigued by the dilemma that Vander's kids found themselves in, which spared Malphoy,errrr... Deckard. The title and line of this episode sets the new status quo going forward.
    I think something you realized about Powder is that Vi is the most important person in her life, even at the opening of the series. Powders reaction to the dead parents wasn't to cry for them like Vi did. She actually wanted to comfort Vi in that instance. In Episode 2 she's heartbroken that Vi was going to turn herself in and then she went to Vander, but she didn't tell him what Vi did and Vander's gesture of making her a soda didn't cheer her up as it would a parent. So well done without actually telling us.
    Kevin Alejandro who plays Jayce I recognized from the TV show Lucifer, where he played Dan. Shoreh Agadashloo is an incredible actress who's silky pipes portrayed Grayson is from another incredible show called The Expanse, which is also very good for reactions. It's 6 seasons and about 50 some episodes, so worth considering. I actually saw some similarities between the Expanse and Arcane. It's about a battle between the haves and have nots, has an incredible story and characters, and some glowie blue stuff.
    Great reaction! Happy to see the tears flowing free in this episode.

The team are very dedicated to making this the best quality they can, and they don't seem to have anyone breathing down their necks making the toxic demands that ruin many other productions.
      I am, of course, worried that they may have exhausted their capacity for creativity, or that Riot might decide that there wasn't enough game related inducement, or Netflix might apply pressure for the show to be more (insert terrible idea here) - but I still choose to trust them for now.

    I think Vi needed space so she would stop lashing out at Powder. Vi seems to have 1 way to deal with conflict, punching it. She was injured (her arm), exhausted (3 minutes of fighting 20 guys), and emotionally destroyed (the death of her family). She needed to get some distance between herself and Powder or else she would have likely hurt her for real.

It is truly amazing how they take a knock off Harley Quinn and give her a far better backstory, origin arc and emotional depth than any writer of the actual Harley Quinn has ever gotten close to.
    This episode is one of the truly great episodes of television of all time. And while it remains my favourite from the show, there are good arguments people make for at least four of the remaining episodes being even better.

    It seems common for people to think that Silco is going to force Vander to take shimmer. I think I probably did the first time I watched this. But giving shimmer to someone who has a reason to hurt you seems like a good way to get torn apart. Deckhard has a weak personality (flashback to him running from Vi when he was the one with a knife) , and wants shimmer to feel strong. He's already under the sway of Silco's manipulations, and now Silco controls the supply of shimmer - so he does Silco's bidding.
    If Silco gave Vander shimmer, even if Vander was locked in that chair, I think the room would be decorated in Silcos innards in fairly short order.

    Milo and Clagger were their family. They were the other adopted children of Vander, so trust me Vi and Powder certainly care about them. Vi watched her brothers and Vander die because Powder didn't do the one thing she asked her to do. Her anger is justified, and she wasn't trying to hurt Powder. She was telling the truth. I'll never get folks who don't get why she had walk off her anger. And Marcus absolutely saved Vi's life, and Powder has no right to anger. None. She killed her entire family, accident or not.

    • @kiwio3o387

      Her anger is justified, her actions are not. Teaching a child that they're a "jinx" in the context here isn't healthy for anybody, and it's not telling the truth. All that does it set up the child for failure. Powder was angry at Vi for leaving her back at the place, but it was more upset and abandonment issues over simply anger. Vi is abusive towards Powder in some instances - it can be seen in the Enemy music video as well. Child abuse has terrible affects on people growing up, whether it's bullying from siblings or friends or people at school or by parents and adults. It wasn't right at all for Vi to hit her over something like that, but Vi deals with problems with her hands, and that's what she was doing here. She walks off to get the space she needs to calm down after seeing blood from Powder's nose fall onto her hand. She knows what she said and did weren't right, especially after Vander's last words to her were to take care of Powder, but she's of course still incredibly upset at what happened and just needed a second. People understand why she walked off and why she did all of those things, but that doesn't make every action there justified.
