What a master piece story. I was somewhere in rural Kenya as a class 7 pupil. All I can remember seeing were low flying jets emerging from the hills of Tinderet and cruising towards Kisumu. Long live Kenya

I was also a pupil (can't remember what age although probably also class/form 7) in Nairobi. I remember the sound of 'fireworks' in the morning, an F5 over Nairobi descending with a bomb and then ascending and then listening to the BBC to discover we were in a coup. My father was silly enough to drive out and see what was going on ... lots of bodies riddled with machine gun bullets around the University area. My mother lost a cousin because her boyfriend drove through a roadblock in a panic and the police shot them (her fatally).

I was a young boy and staying at Lanet Barracks, Nakuru. My father was a non commissioned army officer, but stationed at DOD, Hurlingham. We woke up in the morning and all of a sudden there were sirens calling soldiers to assemble. We always used to see these preparations but this was different. Within a short time the soldiers went to the armory and trucks came to take soldiers to Nairobi for the counter attack. I was then 11 years old and I told my mum war had broken out. Guys, when war breaks out, the psychology and emotions of soldiers changes. Many of the soldiers were our friends who died and others got maimed. What's unfortunate is that I met some of them after they had retired and they were so disheartened for not being taken care of adequately of their injuries . I was at Moi Forces Academy , Eastleigh and all these stories were narrated by age mates we went to school with because the majority of the students' parents were soldiers. After that the army and airforce was to be filled with Kalenjins. They'd rise so phenomenally to protect Moi. May God help this country to have fairness to all. I'm 55 years old and wish the best for future generations of Kenya. One last note, Kenyans of non Somali origin should know that Somalis of Kenya are a very, very patriotic people and are different from Somalis from Mogadishu area. They're not deeply clannish like Somalis from Mogadishu. They want a fair Kenya. If you meet a Somali of Kenya anywhere in the world he feels very Kenyan. Even when a Kenyan Somali goes to Somalia he is still attached to Kenya. I've experienced it. Somalis from Somaliland, the Ishaq too are very good people and know how to live with other people.

Sad they were neglected by self centered nyayo, and my advice to the current security forces that are killing and maiming innocent young stars just exercising their democratic rights, be warned that after all that foolishness and blindly following illegal orders by Ruto eventually you'll be left alone to rot alone, secondly I hate using tribal notes , but here it seems that kalenjins are a self centered and greedy people with no memories that what goes up always comes down with a thud

Good to hear that, though I can say I was born brought up and went to school in eldoret , one thing I learned about them is they say one thing but completely do the opposite of what they say , so if they've changed good for them maybe somewhere in the future when I visit Kenya again I'll be able to see the new difference . Firstly, it's incredible how all the fighting units of the Kenya armed forces could go into war games in the far N.W of the country preparing for war with Uganda! Idi Amin who was probably the main concern was already 3 years out of power. So what was the level of threat Kenya faced from Uganda at the time of the coup attempt?
Secondly, if mere war games could deny Nairobi the capacity to defend itself from within, as nearly all forces were concentrated in part of the country, what would have happened if Kenya actually faced a full blown external attack from militarist Uganda and/or Somalia as tensions were rife mid-late 70's?
