A320 Engine Failure in the Cruise

  • In our A320 simulator we demonstrate the initial actions following an engine failure at flight level 340 (34,000') and the information that the aircraft presents us with.
    Interesting Stuff / Further Reading:
    During this demonstration we left the aircraft in 'NAV', rather than selecting heading as suggested. Depending on the airspace/geographical requirements, after selecting heading it may be appropriate to hold that heading, turn 5 degrees or make a larger turn (over the ocean or perhaps a turn to clear other traffic).
    This video demonstrates the obstacle strategy. The alternative to this is the standard strategy whereby the aircraft is descended at 0.78M / 300kts to keep within the stabilised windmill engine relight envelope. You can always switch between the two strategies!
