Most lovely singing from both. Sutherland rhapsodized about Aragall, citing his voice as being 'pure silver'. She recorded both LUCREZIA BORGIA and ESCLARMONDE with him. He had a tendency to flat slightly on top and was deviled by crippling stage fright throughout his career, but the voice was solid technically and he looked well onstage. I heard him as both Alfredo in TRAVIATA and the title role of DON CARLO. His voice shot straight up to high C, with a brilliant 'ping' in the resonance. Pavarotti cited him as 'perhaps the best of us all' - which was most generous, and presumably included Domingo and Carreras in that equation. However, than can never be a 'best'. It all depends on the listeners taste and opinion, and also whether you hear the artist in his prime. Caballe, needless to say, is splendid here.
