Your review perfectly describes a demo of the Mach 4 i had recently. I used words like skitish, and your note about downhill stability matches my experience. I went away wondering if adding additional sag to the suspensions and taking a few psi out of tires would have made this bike perfect. Love your reviews.
I bought a frame only 105-115mm rear & it came with shock inverted & a twist lock. Paired it a Fox 34 Factory 2 position & used the fork lever for both lock outs ditching the twist lock. Love the bike but the shock seems to become plusher mid ride, like the oil in the damping circuit has got warm & thinner.
I'm still happy with my 2021 Trance Advanced Pro 1 trail bike with 115 mm rear travel and fox 34 130mm forks. 66.5 Ht angle, it's basically an XC bike nowadays. It's basically the same GEO as there Ripley and Pivot 429
Hey Mo, Thanks for the content!. Are you and Hannah timing the descents out of interest? Would be good to know what the actual difference in time is between the bikes.
Loved the review and am looking forward to hearing about all the bikes on test. Quick tip: maybe hold off on the espresso before the review and bite your tongue right before you say "actually" and "definitely." Great bike though!🤟
Did you test the bike at 106 or 115 rear travel? I’ve owned the mach 4 sl for a couple months now and I definitely 😂, prefer the bike at the shorter rear travel setting. It some how feels even more efficient then my hardtail while not being harsh. It’s very firm but not harsh I would say. My local trail is not very technical though. It’s fast flowing single track.
Interesting on your thoughts on the new Fox 34 SC fork. I just got the new GripX 130 factory fork and was hoping to get a Grip2 on sale, so now I hope I didnt go backwards getting a more racey fork when I wanted more plushness or damp feeling.
If you check there site the chainstays are longer than most. And the BB drop is alot. I bought this frame with geometry number on Pivot site. But 6 months later they changed all the numbers. I ride eastcoast. Mont Saint Anne. And I find that due to the longer rear end this bike does not turn in the woods as quickly as I would like. Also the BB is very low so always hitting roots and rocks. Slack seat tube and Shorter reach and 120mm head tube really can’t get enough weight on the front end for turning in the woods. Climbing roots rocks is good. But really trials like stuff the bike/suspension just moves around too much Got mine down to under 24 lbs. This is compaired to my Norco Revolver 120/120.
Thank you!! I would say the Mach 4SL is much more race friendly! The trail 429 looks awesome but might not have the acceleration you wanted for a race. But I’ll try one out!!
@@moandhannahtravelI wound up buying the trail 429. Loved the Mach 4 SL on up hills but downhill it was too fast for my skill set. The 429 still climbs well but the trail tires made for better stability downhill for me.The 429 is a fabulous trail bike for the average rider. Both are great bikes!!
Love this review! I believe this checks all the boxes with slack ST(steeper ST is overhyped) higher Stack, bonus! Short ST, punchy, playful! DW-Link, proven! I’m not an XC racer but this is almost a short travel trail bike. Do you think the SB 157 combined with the DW Link adds more stability than most XC frames?
Mo, casually dropping seat tube angle discussions, while climbing a 20% grade. Also, 74° is an unacceptable seat tube angle to me. 2010 called and once they reach numbers back. 😂
During my xc racing time, these are called long travel bikes. Funny how times change. Anyway, should have been better if this comparo includes the Scott Spark RC and Trek Supercaliber. 😊
We need a DW link bike without the silly short chainstays. I've owned both long (445mm) and short (332mm) cs xc bikes and I'll take the longer any day of the week.
Great job with these videos! I’m in the market right now for a short travel trail bike (Downcountry more so than full XC) and wasn’t considering the Pivot Mach 4SL much until I saw this. Currently trying to decide between the new Epic 8 Evo or SB120. But to then there is now the new stumpy that dropped today and coming from a motocross background , I’m wondering if I should play it safe with that. Really curious to hear how much better these XC bikes pedal when compared to the short travel trail bikes. For what it’s worth I’m coming from a Santa Cruz megatower and like to set my best times on the downhill but I’m done pedaling those bikes around and really just want a poppy playful down country / trail bike now. Thanks !
Loved the review as I tested this bike and loved it!! I am 5 feet 2 and the Pivot is the only MTB bike that I could fit into. Kudos to Pivot for keeping petite women on the trail! This x-c shootout is great!!!! Thanks

I like the intros, no music, so you can hear how the bikes are connecting with the trail.
Thanks!!
The best sound 🤩
Drinking game... take a shot every time Mo says actually.... ;)
Great review.
Thank you!! 😂
I can’t believe all those parts are ‘actually’ on that bike.
great review!! I have a Pivot LES one of the most pure MTN bikes out there. Rage Cycles in Phoenix is going to build me a Mach 4 ! Can't Wait!!
I have this bike and can confirm it is so damn good.
So much fun!!!

Thank you!! And yeah rewatching and maybe I did say it a bunch but also I’m suprised I said anything coherently this deep into the project 😂
Really enjoyed that review! Been on the Mach4 SL 2019.
Still love it but wondering how it compares to the latest version...
Pivot really did amazing with this bike!

Great review. Go easy on the word 'actually'. 😂
and definitely
Actually okay 😂😂😂
Like I said definitely!
@@moandhannahtravelI’m glad you can laugh at the criticism. It can be hard to hear even if it’s warranted.

The fox is great!!! They both have such interesting feelings on the trail!

I think it’s more of a combo of amazing carbon construction and dw-link! Such a good bike!!!
@@moandhannahtravel true
DW link has been around forever. My 2005 Iron Horse had it. Proven design.
So true!
How would you compare the Ari Signal peak to the Pivot Mach 4 SL?
Did Hannah ride the Mach 4 SL? If so, how tall is she and what size did she ride? Pivot's size chart seems way off!
Yes and 5’8 and tested a medium!

Did not know Rekon was available 2.4 3C EXO in "120 TPI", thought only 60 TPI, even Maxis website does not list -- where can you get one of these?
Maybe it’s OEM only? Well try and ask pivot!
@@moandhannahtravel cool appreciate it
Mo what is your inseam, I am also a taller guy and have seat tube angle concerns.
It looks like there are bolts on the bottom of the top tube for another bottle cage.... Y/N?
I think that’s for a tool!!
Yes, I fit two 750ml on a Medium

How could you leave the Sniper T out of this test? Intense invented the downcountry category with the sniper T 💯
You can put 3 water bottles on this bike. I have that setup on a large frame
Great bike, shame about the press fit bb
